- Shang Chi: a bunch of tired tropes, a serious identity crisis, and an all-too-powerful protagonist makes this movie fall flat in regards to the successful Marvel formula.
Take it from me. I'm no professional movie critic but I am a doctor and that obviously makes me qualified to tell you if a movie was bad or not, and let me tell you this one was unfortunately pretty bad! I love Marvel movies and there's basically only one that I didn't like before this (Captain Marvel). But this one is probably going to take the number two spot which is a huge disappointment for me.
Did you also come out of the movie disappointed in how it turned out? In this video I will share my thoughts about why the movie was bad, what they did wrong, and what I hope they will do better for the next time. To sum it up - they really tried to do way too much and ended up not doing great at any one thing in particular. That and a whole bunch of other weird little things that seemed not up to par with Marvel standards. Everyone else was praising the fight scenes. But I grew up watching Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies and honestly, while the bus fight was great the rest was just meh. Shang Chi as a protag was very weak too.

This is SO ACCURATE. As a marvel movie lover, this movie was SO BAD, and we give it the benefit of the doubt too often because “it’s Marvel”
Most of the MCU is dogshit to me. This was one of the few MCU films I truly enjoyed and considered good. far better than Iron Man 2,3, Age of Ultron, Endgame’s massive plotholes, The Thor trilogy, first Captain America, Black Widow, Eternals, etc.
Only Winter Soldier, Infinity War, iron Man 1, Ragnarok, and No Way From Home; were of interest to me.

I'm so glad someone said it. I thought I was the only one. Finally watched it because of the "amazing reviews" and after the movie ended, I started questioning if this is supposed to be a good movie, I wonder what bad movies must be like🤣. I remember my dad watching movies like 36th chamber of shaolin, enter the dragon and a lot of other Bruce lee movies. I wasn't as interested in them at the time, but they had iconic fight scenes. I didn't expect this film to match that but the fights weren't believable. I mean, for me to disregard the "marvel trope", atleast something in the movie should land. The movie's plot wasn't engaging, there was no character development and the fight scenes were below average at best. Didn't exactly see what the point of the movie. To be honest the character Katy didn’t sit well with me after the sister joined. I don’t know but her taking that important last shot at the monsters throat just felt sooooo off to me, I honestly felt like the sister should’ve been the one to make the important defining shot or action.

Hahaha totally spot on, dude ! And I'm an Asian, in Asia, and I thought the movie kinda sucked. It certainly wasnt a Donnie Yen action flick, which is my go to star for action flicks these days. The only thing that surprised me was some of the early on kungfu sequences were pretty decent. And tony leung is always good. The bits with ben Kingsley were funny too. But seriously, that's about it. Everything u said is spot on, it's like a 5 out of 10 for me. Btw, the romanian guy with the blade is actually a recurring baddie in the original shang chi MOKF comics, called razorfist. Hes actually cool , but his character again was just appropriated from the comics without the right backstory. The original MOKF comics were some of my favourites from my youth, they shoulda just stick to that. What happen to Clive Preston, black jack tarr, leiko who, and shang chi's awesome nemesis, shen Kuei ? All the good stuff was jettisoned in favour of this bland "I gotta find my own power" shit . Looking on the bright side, I expected the movie to suck, so wasnt pissed when I finally saw it.
Gah I had a feeling there was probably more substance to the razor fist character that just wasn’t explored in the movie. Also cool to hear how much more in depth they really could have gone, and I hope they might be able to redeem themselves at a later time with one of those storylines haha

Well so much of the movie came from Kung Fu Hustle. But Stephen did a much better job paying homage to the genre and being funny.

The moment the MCU started to cram all the exaggerated comedy crap in from 2016 and onwards I started to loose interest. Winter Soldier was great and carried a strong conviction, but allot the rescent MCU movies have been a headache, the tone is all over the place and the jokes are all telegraphed and are garbage.
Yeah I am definitely a little worried about this next phase of MCU…. But who knows maybe we will be pleasantly surprised
Winter soldier?? It basically only had a few comedic scenes in the whole first season it sucked to be honest.
Wanda and Vision was even worse and it took forever until they all of a sudden showed you real clues to what was happening.
Sure it was a guessing game but there was so much you could skip over and it wouldn't have made any difference.
So much useless stuff was put in it just to make it look like an old Dick Van dyke show except it was more cringey and weird to be honest.

The CGI was terrible for Shang Chi and Black Widow
Two thirds of the movie is narration, there's like 6 characters all competing for the comic relief, CG and visual effects are terrible and break immersion, they never explain the rings or what they can do, Shang-Chi had no depth and no character development, no one can decide what language they are supposed to be speaking and go back and forth from chinese to english on a whim.
And holy crap the sword-arm guy.... they really didn't plan that knife out. The knife is BIGGER than his arm! Where does the knife even sit in his arm? If it somehow DOES fit in there.... where do his muscles and bones fit!?! At least for Wolverine they planned like skeletal structure and whatever.
Can’t believe I wasted 2 hours of my life watching this movie. Felt so angry about the drama had to come rant lol Awkwafina was just playing her old characters and her self. Simu was stiff and had no charisma or character. Forgettable character. The mom, and the sister were probably the best part, along with seeing Tony and Michelle. I almost wished they casted some unknown actors to play Shang Chi and Katy. Maybe we could have gotten better chemistry and acting?
After weeks of hearing my fellow asian praise this movie. My thoughts of Shang Chi are exactly the same as yours. It was so much of too many things that it just felt like a mess of a movie. So many things made no sense, just happening for plot. But the random romanian guy, Shang Chi being captain marvel 2.0, the sister almost having zero role in the movie, and aquafina just being an awkward comedic relief.
The best thing you said was that even tho their trying to reach asians. It just felt like they were stereotyping asians just in our modern trends.

I just watched the movie and it got so annoying when it's damn serious,bad bad dark monster is about to eat everything but they just stand around staring at each other.they barely had a chance to get one car through the forest with shangchi but then his father comes in with a dozen cars.when the wife was killed and lying there I noticed,hair in place,no blood,nice and neat
It's a shame that they nerfed the rings because honestly it would have been too similiar to the Infinity Stones, but the original 10 rings were BADASS power wise. Instead they turn the rings into bangles that just...fly around? The original rings each had their own power like creating ice. If the bangles allowed the wearer to like turn chi energy into like straight Dragonball level energy they would have been awesome. Instead they just like fly around and hit people? And that's how the Mandarin conquered so much? What?!

But truthfully, just not enough Kung-fu scenes! For example, two missed opportunities: when Shang’s mom gets attacked - it should have been a huge cool brawl scene, reminiscent from sooo many other Kung-fu films. NOPE! Just cuts to Shang crying while his mom screams... dull... Then when Shang goes to assassinate the man who killed his mom - could have been so cool and ninja like. NOPE! Just cuts away to some dumb Aquafina exchange... lame!

finally watched it. bad villian, "my dad is bad, but he just wants to save my mom", so they threw in fake ghidorah vs dragon fight at the end cause they needed a villian. wtf. lets turn awkafina into hawkeye. felt like a kid's movie.

I don’t think it depends on the rating. But I’ll say this, if MCU films adapted storylines like ‘Demon in a Bottle’, ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’, etc. I think it would’ve add more depth to the franchise.

This is Marvel's take on a Chinese martial arts movie and I really didn't like how they approached this movie
the consistency of this movie is just bad, I watched in IMAX 2nd week of release. hoping that the hype away ,but I was like WTF ppl are praising this movie so much that I started to question about life lol. few months till today finally got to see folks talking, and gathering thoughts about the problems of it. So many out of MCU logic that can’t be change even with Thanos flick, Shang-chi was just a spoiled kid who at last claiming to kill his dad and happens to fail. He got into the lake and got to meet this dragon from no-where, know how to ride it, know how to kick his daddy’s ass while taking the rings cause mommy taught him some Tai-chi when he was 7. letting his dad die from the outta no-where Pacific Rim soul suckin monster, and the fact Katy train arrow for few days then able to F up this monster and let Shang to kill it. Oh my lord just so many stuff I wanna point for this movie, and the chemistry between Katy and Shaun I was like I really don’t wanna see Katy Shaun kissing(It just be really unacceptable). The movie is called: Legend of the 10 rings. I was like WTF I don’t know anything about these Fukin rings! is just another mommy daddy chinese story with Kungfu(which western audience love)+water dragon/pacific rim vibe+chinese folk lore story. I don’t give a damn about the protagonist, and any other characters except Wenwu, he got some good acting that is great and proper for the movie. If I see Shang-chi appearing in other MCU films(which he is going to) I be really hating it. I don’t care about the character and don’t feel bad for him losing mommy daddy and be here wielding the rings, and showing this or that Kungfu move.

I totally agree, As a Filipino, Asian representation in Hollywood movies is a bumpy or difficult to start, because audience in general aren't use to that because audience are still watching or still like White led Marvel movies

I was bullied, frowned upon and laughed at when I shared my negative feedback with this movie. Here's what I wrote then...
Set aside Shang Chi's fight sequences. Marvel fans have been waiting for a better Mandarin after Iroman 3 and Hail To The King short. Wenwu had the potential of being one of the biggest villain for earth level heroes. He's a 4,000 years old immortal warrior, king and conqueror. He should be like Earth's Kratos - God of War. And he should be rich, the master of all martial arts and warfare and with his age, he should have the wisdom to not fall for traps and most of all, he should be the master of the ten rings. Instead, the movie gave us a 4,000 year old emo-virgin. I guess it's been too long since Ironman 1, Ironman 3 and Hail To The King short that people forgot how big of a threat the Ten Rings Organization during those times.
It would have been better if the writers removed the stupid fantasy elements of the third act, did not kill Shang's mom and kept Ta Lo a mystery location. As the God of war himself, Wenwu should have been Shang's teacher and the goal is inheriting a few rings if and when Wenwu sees his son is fit to weild the power of the rings. Wenwu shouldn't have been killed off as he is actually the best part of the movie. It should have been Wenwu's story titled Legend of The Ten Rings. He could have been a force to reckon with the earth level heroes and even maybe partner up with future Dr. Doom. He could have just fought or even defeated Shang at the end, still love his wife and childen and ask his wife to further their children's training in Ta Lo and get mystical weapons or armor. Hell, it would've been better if we got a backstory how Wenwu got the ten rings from Starfox so the end credits scene from the Eternals made things more exciting.
That is also why Shang needs his mother without getting nerfed after leaving Ta Lo because Shang and Ling would inherit their mom's immortality and their mother's techniques to defeat someone who even weilds a powerful weapon such as the ten rings.
Katy should have been written as Shang's actual love interest, a capable fighter and if possible, a daughter of the leader of Ta Lo who shunned Wenwu and his wife away.
The fighters of Ta Lo should have been more powerful with their martial arts and their dragon weapons. Not some pathetic fodders that can be beaten by regular ten rings foot soldiers with stupid costumes. Add insult to injury, the Ta Lo fighters should be the guardian of Ta Lo and yet, they have no mystical powers like Wong and Dr. Strage. How TF could those people defend Ta Lo from Soul Sucking Demons and a Soul Sucking Kaiju when even the water dragon barely survived?

I’m happy to see another Asian-American looking at this movie objectively. I’m not one to over analyze movies while watching them but a lot of the points you made were glaringly apparent during my first time watching. I was excited for this movie and it was a pretty big let down.

Spot on. I’m not Asian but you don’t have to be to think “was this a failed attempt to pander... or a fail attempt to honor...? Because it should have accomplished neither...”
The fact is that they tried to pack too much into this one movie. It was an origin story -like you said - without real toil. The continuity convenience (that should have been the title of the movie...) is painful to watch in a Marvel flick and the skills and emotional depth of Shang could have been organically developed and attained (ie. swallowable) if they only expanded this into multiple movies. After all this is not JUST Shang’s origin, it’s the origin story of The Hand and lands on The Hand of the future.. SURELY that is worth and should have been expanded upon.
The “comedy” side was a train wreck not worth commentary. If you see rotten food you just know it’s bad...
Speaking of which Rotten Tomatoes..... Rotten Tomatoes is garbage and it’s accuracy is about as good as a dart throw. If you look for real quality in a movie RT generally gloss over it in lieu of general audience mouth breathing.

I also thought the movie was kind of bad. Plot wasn’t great and pacing sucked. So slow. The only really good part was the bus scene in the beginning. I actually liked Awkwafina’s character, but I wasn’t taking the movie very seriously and didn’t like it overall, so her character provided some relief from that for me. She also seemed to have the most unique/well fleshed out personality, but the bar was low. Tbh they probably could have cut out half of the movie by taking out useless and boring dialogue, shots of characters faces where we are just waiting for them to say something, and other random shit that didn’t need to be there. And they could’ve presented the information in much less convoluted ways, considering the fact that the story is pretty cliche and simple to begin with. They also had a lot of moments where they explained things through windy dialogue rather than just showing us. Overall, boring and underwhelming. 2 hour run time but felt like 4.
As an Asian, I’m so glad to hear other Asians criticizing it and not just being happy and uncritical because representation. Also with the cheesy platitudes about lineage and the blood debt and whatever, my mom said it felt like they were reading lines from fortune cookies, lol. It was so cheesy and out of place, but I guess asian elders have to sound wise and poetic?
Other marvel movies were better and it’s sad that THE Asian one is so bad. Hopefully there can be more in the future that don’t only represent Chinese people and can have asian characters who don’t have Kung fu as their power and who don’t adhere to a variety of other stereotypes. Having this representation is better than nothing, I GUESS, but it’s by no means the amazing movie that people are saying, and by no means is it a revolutionary takedown of Asian stereotypes.

Also, I’m definitely not nitpicking when I say the pacing was so slow and off that I was bored. Pacing can make or break a movie. And it wasn’t just a “few cheesy lines”. The lines of “wisdom” were presented as important for Shang chi to hear, but it kind of takes you out of it when they sound like stereotypical “wise Asian person” Mumbo jumbo.
There were other issues besides this, though. They often presented information in stupid ways, including crappy dialogue, repeating the same info over an over again, or only saying something once with absolutely no build up to the reveal. There were prolonged talking scenes, like with the father explaining stuff, where they could really have used the advice “show don’t tell”.
The characters were also not very compelling. The way they presented info about their backstories didn’t make me connect with them. I didn’t feel empathy for the characters because they didn’t feel like really people. The writing just wasn’t that good.
The visuals were okay, but sometimes a bit muddled and lacked cohesion. The movie was not nearly as nice looking as something like Black Panther.
Marvel has made some excellent movies before that I love. They’ve even made movies that are entertaining and good enough for me to enjoy them, even if they have typical superhero movie tropes. Black Panther is a great example of this. I felt like Shang Chi really missed the mark, and I’m not gonna lower my standards just because “it’s marvel”, especially when they’re making this seem like such an important movie for Asian Americans. So again, you’re right it could have been worse, but it was still bad in numerous ways, and it frustrates me that people seem to be uncritical of it.

@@Undeadsweater considering how most MCU films are far worse than this one, I perfectly understand how it got such a high rating. Most MCU films have far worse acting, dialogue, and plot lines. Captain America always says the most cheesy goddamn cliches about truth and justice. Tony Stark always keep making basic witty one liners 90% od the time. This film had far less of those issues and the fight scenes were far better than of the MCU where the actors rely on stunt doubles for everything

I deffo agree missed opportunities, but it deffo had potential.... my major anger with the movie is simu literally stood there when his mom died, and did the same with his dad just stood there watching the life get sucked out of him didn't even half ass try to save the dad who just saved him.... needed more emotion from simu when his dad died just saying

I just finished watching and it was so boring, it was just whatever, all the characters were boring and Katy was so, so, SOOOO FUCKING ANNOYING, and I’m sad that we’ll get more of her in the future, Wemwu was the best character for me, and I hate when people are like “oh it’s just a marvel movie” like no, it’s not a marvel movie, marvel movies are funny but they have compelling characters and a good story, most of the time they’re well written (or were), I really like Simu Liu and I hope his character gets better in the future
Tony Leung (great actor, I'm a huge fan of Wong Kar Wai) was a poor choice for the main villain! I can't help but think they made a huge mistake not having Jason Scott Lee portray Xu! They didn't even explain the creation of the 10 rings properly at all. It was like a broken Zang Yimou rip-off and extremely boring for the last 45 minutes.

I think the moment when Shang-Chi and Katy decided to go to China, the plot just kinda collapsed: why would Wenwu send Shang-Chi that postcard if he already knew where the second pendant is? Why not separate the two children, and just take it? Also when Wenwu showed up with his gang at the village, why did he not bring guns?

I heard somewhere that wenwu sent it as shangchi s sister so he can go to china look for her and that he can just go grab the 2 at the same time but shangchi never made the move.. remember when wenwu grabbed them he said the way would open in 3 days.. and shangchi told katy that his sister sent the card 2 weeks prior the bus fight. So i think Wenwu was running out of time so he sent the his man to get the neckless from him and that pushed him to go to china to tell his sister.. at the end wenwu got what he wanted. Both kids at the same place. Althou his ways was 🧐 but his plan worked.

This movie was terrible. Captain America earned his stripes, even though he wasn't worthy of them, Shang Chi gets everything from a millennia before him passed to him. He didn't feel at all like a hero. Emotions were stail. 3 bad movies in a row. Captain Marvel, Blake Widow and Shang Chi. Hopefully the Eternals are better.
With a little tweaking this wpuldve been a better DBZ movie than it was a comic book movie. I agree with your pov man. Suspending disbelief for me was too much when the guy on the bus stayed in his seat recording while they almost died.

It wasnt really good honestly. Plot holes, some cool action scenes, then not so great, not much plot twist, villain was meh as most marvel movies. So tired of this formula. SPOILERS And i hated the dragons. WHAT A bad idea and misused. I prefered the eternal even if the acting was sometimes bad and the vfx also bad sometimes, at least it broke that mold and had plot twists and stakes.

This movie has a decent story but Marvel butchered it with bad writing, messing around with the time line with flashbacks, wasting time injecting comedy into movie instead of taking few minutes to explain the main plot.
It seems to me the producer was trying so hard to make this movie unboring that they turned into a confusing mess.
I would dare say Marvel already peaked at Infinity End Game.
We will see a gradual downhill in movie quality since End Game.

Personally I liked the movie, but there were a couple things that I wished were in the movie. I also agree your points on how Mandarin's death was wasted.
• Have Mandarin in a scene by himself where he just CRIES thinking about his family.
• Mandarin and the aunt shouldve had a deep interaction scene(s).
• I wanted to see Shang Chi have a struggle moment. Where he has to rise up - like Tony Stark in Iron Man 1.
• Shouldve showed the mother fight the henchmen, and her getting beat up. It wouldve made a bigger impact and develop more sympathy for Shang Chi and the Mandarin. Wouldve made the scene where the Mandarin beat ups everyone at the gang's place more satisfying. Like you feel for him.
• Shouldve showed Shang Chi kill the gang leader that was responsible for his mother's death. It would show and remind us that heroes do have a dark self.
• Razor Fist was boring. Shouldve gave him a background.
Shang chi was a very good movie

Most of the MCU was dogshit anyway. All the Thor films besides Ragnarok, Iron Man 2 and 3, Captain America’s first film, Age of Ultron was a mess, etc. it’s been one hit wonders for every 5 crappy films

Another gripe i had, was the fact that Shang Chi depicted no beliefs at all. He just went along with everything that they threw at him. He didnt say NO to anything. He didn't say "theres ANOTHER WAY to do this." He just does WHATEVER the writers have him do.

To be fair, Shang Chi’s background is interesting, it just doesn’t seem like it had all that big of an impact on him as a grown up. The guy was raised as a child soldier and he doesn’t seem like it took all that big a toll on him later in life. And then you had the sister go “I wasn’t allowed to be brutally trained, my dad was so sexist for not putting me under torture for years on end and send me to execute people”, like gurl what? Stuff like that minimized what he went through, since it’s seen as more of a positive than anything, and therefore, why should we feel much of anything about it?

I felt the same thing about the movie.It was basically a plotless movie even though its a fiction it is really bland with no interconnections in the movie. Dont know even what the use of 10 rings ,where they came from or wtf.I am from india even the decade same old plot bollywood movie never made feel like leaving the theatre midway through the movie .I feel marvel has a tradition of making movies like this like antman and the wasp, captain marvel.Sometimes marvel make amazing movies like far from home,doctor strange which had me awestruck for days ,im like what amazing plot it was and then for first time i was so hugely disappointed.I am ranting cause every comment i see they are praising it as if it is in the likes of civil war or doctor strange .i was beating my head midway and was embarassed cause i dragged my brother to see it along with me by saying the critics are praising it its goimg to be amazing and then midway through movie i am like wtf .bro it was really a torture to see it in theatre.
Yeah some of their movies really are so good! Even for “just a marvel movie” they are actually better than lots of other movies out there. Seems like unfortunately not all of them can be that great however :(

I enjoyed it. Far better than most MCU films considering it’s Kung Fu action and simply yet entertaining story. I was tired of characters babbling about “what it means to be a superhero!” In all the other MCU films.

This video is EVERYTHING. Like I watched the movie back last year and I was SO disappointed. I hated every second of it. And don’t get me started on how easily Shang-Chi got the rings. And what is the story behind them? This is basically a story about the dad. I don’t know why Shang-Chi is on the cover when he didn’t do anything to deserve the rings. This is the worse Marvel movie I’ve ever watched. I still don’t understand the hype.
The story and concept is pretty cool. They use chinese mythology animals
with magic and kung fu and created an universe of it which is pretty
coool but the narrative and execution is horrible. U kept on jumping
between present and past, its pretty distracting. Not saying its a bad
thing its just not done well. Also the part where shang chi had to
refind himself only took like mayb 10mins of the film. Unlike black
widow the whole film is about finding herself and rediscovering herself
bits by bits. It is poorly built up and felt rushed. Like the movie is
really badly done and does not live up to Marvel standards. If they
rearrange the narrative and maybe build up more on shangchis epiphany
then it will be a great movie.

I can agree on everything you said. I was pretty disappointed that I spent two and a half hours of my spare time watching a movie that left me confused. The whole time I was watching, I was wondering what the goal was and where the movie was going. The movies attempts at comedy were nothing short of pitiful, and I found them very irritating when they randomly came out of nowhere.
I like movies that have a character who suddenly gets powers, and has to learn how to use them, and slowly becomes a hero. A good example of this is the shadow and bone trilogy, which I’ve been reading for a while now. The main character in that series had a power that was hidden inside her that was awaken by a very intense situation, but she didn’t know how to use the powers right out the get go. I highly recommend that book series by the way.
The movie had a lot of good ideas, but the writing, like most movies now a days, was lazy and seemed very rushed at some points. There were too many cliches that I’m seriously tired of seeing. The tropes, like you said, were overused when the movie wanted to use them.
Overall I give this movie a 6 out of 10.

I only liked 3 things in Shang Chi... The bus fight, the music, and Tony Leung. I'm so glad I'm not the only person who thought the movie was bad and full of ass pulls. I'm an ABC and I'm like man... This just makes it look like we can't make good movies. They should have just made WenWu the only villain instead of the cgi soul thingy and dragon. It was also a shame they didn't give Yuen Wah a bigger role.. just made him a grumpy old man who dies before any real character development...
Yes me too,, i have high hopes and expectations about the movie but when it came out it is really disappointing. I like the battle scenes you can just cut it out and make a compilation, its pretty damn good. Problem is the flow of the movie, and I felt there's no character development of the protagonist. I'm expecting that SHang CHi is a kind of spoiled son that run away after his mission given by his father. He is too kind for such have an evil father, the protagonist should have at least a bit of bad values or attitude. The actor of shang chi is great, ofcourse he is just following script but I believe he is capable of what I'm trying to say.
How about the vfx and martial arts sucked and they did not hold true to the character at all from the comics who was a lot more tactical and thought provoking in a philosophical type of way.... now he’s just some random spoiled asian kid who does kung fu... they ruined my favorite super hero 😓
