Chris Alo's choice of Michael Bolton was EPIC!
"In 1979, country went SATANIC" LOL, priceless.
Hey Pete. I thought of a great idea for a Hudson valley squares episode. Put the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc albums of a band against each other and pick your favorites. For example, on one episode put the 4th studio albums of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden against each other (Stained Class vs. Piece of Mind). On another episode put the 2nd studio albums of Judas Priest and Black Sabbath against each other (Sad wings of destiny vs. Paranoid). These albums are just examples and you can pick whatever ones you want. I thought this would be an interesting HVS series that would further “Spice up” this already awesome program. Thank you so much Pete for all you do, you are awesome!
Stained Class over Piece (no Quest for Fire).
@@andrewpeters8906I agree. Quest for fire is a weak Maiden song.
@@Hamballsthanks my friend
@@MichaelDriskellove your enthusiasm!
Basically an extension of the old 'album wars' episodes we did a while back. Cool.
Classic HSV episode with a full house and a fun topic. Highly entertaining and great participation by all the Squares. Thanks, everyone for another must-see episode.
thank you for watching!😉
Midnight Oil: Power and the Passion 👊🏼
I'm going to change my genre discography on ITUNES from Glam Metal to Hair Bullshit in honor of Count Ralfus
😂
Head like a hole- NIN
Too shy- Kajagoogoo
King of the underdogs- Newsted
Down and Out- Tantric
The Distance- Cake
🇮🇷- Flock of Seagulls
The Distance by Cake is indeed great. Do you know their version of I Will Survive? It’s one of my favorite covers that surpass the original.
@@beetlebum7760 I’ll definitely have to check that one out, never heard it!
Whitesnake throughout 1978-'84 rules, fantastic heavy Blues Rock, "Lovehunter" from '79 remains my favorite album of theirs.
I'm still a "Trouble" guy myself, but I totally agree. Early Whitesnake needs and deserves way more respect.
I love Saints & Sinners
Now I have to make a playlist of these songs. Great show.
Yeah, I get s#!*& all the time about my Slurpee cups hangin' out in a box in the attic. Glad I'm not the only one Steve!
The song “London Calling” has a gravitas and immediacy that most songs lack. I do love the Clash in general also.
Great, fun show!
My 3 are Under the Milky Way by The Church, Drivers Seat by Sniff n the Tears, and Into The Night by Benny Mardones
Nice !
The Church has a lot of good songs. Reptile for instance.
Brilliant show guys loved it ❤
Monster Mash.. came out on like a Katel compilation record. I had it!! 1974".. thank you all for a great show!!
What a fantastic show guys not laughed so much for ages 😂thank you
Midnight Oil have a lot of great songs and albums, also one of the best bands I’ve ever seen live, they’re full of energy and lead singer Peter Garrett was always on fire on stage.
Yes! I love their Earth, Sun and Moon album. Other albums are very good but that is the one I still play often. That is a band that not enough people seem to know about or only know the few hit songs.
MIDNIGHT OIL!!! 😂😂😂😂 PETER GARRET 😂😂😂😂 nice joke 👏
@@stixzadinia8584 what’s the joke exactly? They’re a great band.
@@carlpeterson8182 it’s odd too, for some reason people that don’t really know them much really like “Beds are Burning” which is a great song mind you, but they have so many good songs, their last two albums are really solid too.
Yes, this pick was more that I just don't know their stuff besides the one song I heard. Definitely don't hate them. I'll check out more!
Wake me up before you go go. For some dang reason, I love that song. When I'm usually listening to Thin Lizzy, Maiden, Priest, Sinner, Alice Cooper, and Sabbath to name a few.
I’d pick “I’m not an Effigy” by Ministry. I love that song and used it as an intro for a senior year talk/presentation I had to do in 1986.
Perfect example of this for me is kd lang with the song Constant Craving. Don't know anything else from her but love this song
I like that song too. One day I noticed it always gets a lot of play in grocery stores.
Same here, love that song and know nothing more.
I feel the exact same way as Rob when it comes to The Turtles "Happy Together" - it's the first song I remember as a kid.
It's the only song I know of them but I love it too.
Thanks lots of great memories growing up in the 60's!
7-Eleven with slurpy rock cups! I thought I had convinced myself those existed because no one I have mentioned that to has ever heard of them.
Surprised at how many of the Squares didn't like other songs on The Clash London Calling. So many other great tunes... Train In Vain, I'm Not Down, Death or Glory, Lost In the Supermarket, Spanish Bombs, Clampdown... it really is a classic album.
Good morning and thanks for the wake up laughs. Gotta go to work soon so I'll finish the show later.
Pop Song 89 was one of their hits. As you said, it even has a video and a physical single. Charted about the same as End Of The World As We Know It.
If you want to get into real Midnight oil you need the albums - Place without a postcard, 10 to 1, and Red sails in the sunset.
Great show and content
Totally with you on The Clash, Pete.
Great show folks!
I second that Ryan on Mike and the mechanics song Silent Running that is an unreal song. Also one of their newer songs from the album Let Me Fly called Don’t Know What Came Over Me, great song.
Omg REM are probably the greatest band of my generation, creative, musical, informative and just great musicians. The consistent level of great output makes them very special, saw them live twice in 1988 and 1993 wow.
The one song I really like is "Driver 8".
Totally agree. Their deeper album cuts are infinately superior to the singles. All their IRS albums are amazing.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Agree
Awesome episode, guys! I never thought I'd hear Nick admit that he likes "Fallen Angel" by Poison, but I'm here for it! Here are my picks:
1. "Heaven's On Fire" by Kiss - the chorus is insanely catchy
2. "Helter Skelter" by The Beatles - I can't believe these are same guys that wrote "Here Comes the Sun"
3. "Paradise City" by Guns N' Roses - It's got a great groove and it's a good driving song (or good song to play in the car, since I can't drive)
Great episode ! and i gotta say, i am a HUGE fan of the Foo Fighters! but i also love Darkthrone and Bathory. loved just about every song or band mentioned today to a certain degree! and nick still deserves his metal card! heck yeah, rock on !
Good evening guys and gals 🤘
Regarding REM, I'm a big metal fan that had no time for REM in the 90s. I still haven't fully warmed up to their biggest albums - they're just a little too syrupy sweet, or perhaps I've just heard the hits too many times. But from 'New Adventures in Hi-Fi' onward? Just a string of excellent albums. Highly recommended, especially New Adventures - it shows another side of the band that's not as immediately catchy and ultimately more rewarding.
Being a huge REM fan I actually find New Adventures pretty overrated although I do still like it. Personally, I prefer the early, jangle induced indie pop stuff, especially Murmur which is top 5 albums for me. Such a great band who changed their sound constantly with such a unique, eclectic catalogue. But I do agree, some of the hits I can easily do without.
@@JordanGill2002 Come see the REMakes in ATL if you love Murmur and the first 6 records. 90% of our songs are from that era and we play them very well. We only play few times/year now as we are too busy with life in our early 50's. It's lotta fun to rock out those old tunes.
@@michaelvandiver2475 sadly I live in Scotland so that would be some trip to see yous haha. I do agree though those early tunes are so fun to play. With playing guitar as a hobby I know all of Murmur back to front and I play along to it regularly. Laughing is a particular favourite of mine. Just such a beautiful, nostalgic, jangly song.
@@michaelvandiver2475 Cool, I'm in Britain as well but would love to see your band!
@@JordanGill2002 Massive R.E.M. fan too, yep love the early stuff as well, it's funny though I actually have New Adventures as my Contrarian pick for their best album!) But I get why others might not. Tbh I love all the albums, got to see the band 4 times and even met Michael Stipe at a book signing! Don't get me wrong I love SoT, really dig metal and rock, love all the SoT shows, but it's tough seeing R.E.M. slagged off, but I love it that Craig likes Pop Song 89, and I think if he gave Green a full listen he'd find more tunes he likes, because they all fit together so well e.g. Orange Crush, World Leader Pretend and the truly menacing and apocalyptic I Remember California. They were an album band and a live band, great performers and yes the same four hits over and over would get tiresome but there's an amazing catalogue to explore. And even the hits fit in well and have a role to play on the albums. Anyway I've gone on long enough but for me R.E.M. are a great American rock band, fine interpreters of the American songbook and bloody nice blokes to boot and if any of us here put together a compilation of our fave R.E.M. tunes I bet we could convert Pete and several other SoT folks into fans!!!
Feel it Again by Honeymoon Suite is a tremendous song!! 🤘
I crank that one up whenever it comes on! They had a few others as well, but their full albums are littered with forgettable fluff.
"New Girl Now" is a fantastic Honeymoon Suite song, as is "Bad Attitude".
Just went to see Honeymoon Suite last week and they were awesome...tight and sounded great!
Just listened to that Metallica Outlaw Torn, great choice, thanks turn up the radio was perfect for this
Love it! Its so funny watching other members squirm when one of them suggests a band they hate and the one song they really like! 🤣
Shows how subjective music can be.
Yes side 1 is stacked, but I love side 2! Fairies Wear Boots is lyrically goofy but musically amazing! The long intro is one of my favorite Sabbath moments
SImple Minds "Don't You Forget About Me"; Don Johnson "Heartbeat"; and of course Robert Tepper "No Easy Way Out", that's a classic! Man, just in the 80s movie soundtracks there are so many of these! Thanks 🍺🤘
absolutely spot on. And I love those too
Hello Pete ... Chris choice, the Frida's song ... well, Phil Collins played drums on it ... Daryl Stuermer is on guitar also ...
Really good topic, ladies and gentlemen! Entertaining :) Well, my picks are: 1 - Sancta Terra by Epica. Really like the song, but still don't get their other stuff, though trying from time to time. 2 - Theme One by Van Der Graaf Generator. I acknowledge and appreciate their place in prog, listened to most of their catalogue - it's just not my cup of tea. Theme One, though, is a tune that I really enjoy and get back to listening to it from time to time (and I know the reason why). 3 - Serpents in Camouflage by Citizen Cain. I've listened to the rest of their catalogue. Some of it I liked, but Serpents is the only piece that makes me get back to it over and over again. Honorable mentions: Little Girl by Sandra, Christmas Eve by Savatage, Here Comes the Flood by Peter Gabriel, Frankenstein by Edgar Winter Group, Take on Me by A-ha.
i was just tinkering around in my olive garden never ending pasta spaghetti plate and before you knew it i'd carved out a hole right in the center that would continously fill itself with warm marinara. my waitress walked by and teased me that i was playing in my food like a child and i said no acutally im thinking about david coverdale as a lady and said how the nest of noodles reminded me of a thick luxurious muff and how the hole in the center was not exactly but simular to what would be her void and then she my waitress her name was patricia took a breadstick and started poking around in it and said like this and i gave her a wink and said yeah just like that. then it turns out she had never heard of david coverdale or his band whitesnake but i wasnt really saddened by her ignorance.
This is one on the best HVS episodes ever!! Some great choices here but I was sorry that REM got dragged through the mud so bad lol. Thank you all and much love!
Agree, I actually had a few genuine belly-laughs.
Nick and Chris do a great job of setting up their picks.
Love Pete's comment on Les Claypool, "As soon as that guy opens his mouth, I check out.........."
LOL truer words were never spoken.
Ok ill say it, why even have anyone else on besides Karen. No one else can comment on anyone else's picks because she immediately starts commenting as soon as the next guest gives their pick
I suggest cloning Karen, so she can comment on herself and Pete P is never short of HVS panel members 🤣
Looking Glass became Starz - who never got enough recognition, but were heroes to every 80s hair band from the east coast playing the Strip in LA. "She's Just a Fallen Angel" is a classic.
For me...
1. Coldplay - Shiver
2. Tori Amos - Bliss
3. Tom Petty - Breakdown
HM - Nazareth - Telegram
HM - Placebo - Loud Like Love
The Dickie Goodman reference made my day 👍 🦈
Really great episode disagree with some but everyone has pallets of taste and it's just great to hear peoples opinion without it leading into an argument awesome
Oh What A Night - Franki Valli and the Four Seasons
Dream Weaver - Gary Wright
Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper
Honorable mention:
One Thing Leads To Another - The Fixx
Something to Believe In - Poison
It’s A Beautiful World - Devo
Escape(The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes
Summer Breeze - Seals and Crofts
My Sharona - The Knack
Uncle John’s Band - The Grateful Dead
At This Moment - Billy Vera and the Beaters
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
UFO never been a fan but Couldn’t Get It Right is my go to track
Def Leppard Animal. Hair Metal sellout but love any version of this song
ELP could never get into their looooong drawn out songs but when I hear these words, “Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends”, I’m all ears
The Osmonds: crazy horses.
That live video of Baker Street where the band is beyond bored is not live. It´s playback on German television. Probably the reason why they´re so excited.
Never got into Ambrosia, but one song I kind of dig by them is How Much I Feel. And Hall and Oates was not ever on my playlist, but the song She's Gone is one I can go for. I will also add Dirty Lowdown by Boz Skaggs and Lido for that matter.
Shout out "She's Gone"!
GREAT song!
I was BORN in 1962!! Monster Marsh? AWESOME!!!!
I'm with Steves pick on Brandy by Looking Glass...my others would be: "Dancing In The Moonlight" - King Harvest
"Silvia's Mother" - Dr. Hook
"Time To Pretend" - MGMT
"Sweetness"- Jimmy Eat World
Great topic people.
Electric Avenue storyline just made my night so thanks 🙏🏻 so much for that on October 15th?Sincerely, Yours Truly guys lolol 😜
Great show, really looking forward to the Halloween special. Hope Ryan's suggestion of a 1988 show is done. So many great albums released in that year. Probably my favourite for metal albums.
This was hilarious.I loved it.
And I'm a big REM fan !
It was a hit just by chance again in ‘74 because some DJ in NYC played it and Bobby Borris Picket was driving a taxi at the time I heard him interviewrdy
Cool show y'all 😎
Radiohead - You
Muse - Stockholm Syndrome
Kilgore- Providence
That's my picks.
Cheers y'all ☕
Guys and Gal…… it seems it’s been years since I’ve watched and/or participated in a Hudson Valley Squares segment. Real life has been too damned busy!
However here are my three favorite songs from bands that I either didn’t care for or never got into the rest of their discography - no specific order:
1. 1983 - Men Without Hats - Safety Dance…. I’m a child of the 80’s and I was a little kid when I saw that video on MTV and was hooked ever since.
2. 1985 - Cindy Lauper - Good Enough from one of my all time favorite movies, the Goonies. Enough said there.
3. 1967 - Bee Gees - To Love Somebody. I saw it on VH1 when Peter Noone used to host My Generation. Song was catchy and I was about 9 when I saw it on the channel many years ago.
Cheers and enjoy music!
My top 3 albums to listen to during the Halloween season is Black Sabbath's self-titled debut, Misfits' Walk Among Us and Cannibal Corpse's Kill.
Misfits and Sabs are bound to get mentioned.
@@seekah1I agree! Both are staples for Halloween! They do awesome on that
Chris: "I don't even know if they play that song anymore"
Oh they definitely do. I worked the Motley Crue tour last year and Poison played Unskinny Bop.
Poison- Talk Dirty To Me
America- Sister Golden Hair
Phil Collins- In The Air Tonight
Honorable mention:
Lou Gramm- Midnight Blue
Marshall Tucker Band -Heard it in a Love song
yeah - midnight blue
As usual, a stellar episode. Here are 3 of my picks.
Peter Cetera - Living on the Limelight
Cliff Richard - Devil Woman
INXS - Suicide Blonde
As a major INXS fan, I'd normally pitch a complete fit. However, Suicide Blonde is one of my favorite INXS songs. It's in my top five in fact. What I can't believe is that you don't like What You Need (which is an awesome song and it made me a fan of theirs for life), New Sensation, Devil Inside, Never Tear Us Apart, Need You Tonight (everyone who like INXS likes that song) or Disappear? All of these songs were major hits when I was growing-up. I don't know if you're a Gen-Xer like me, but these guys were the bomb in the 80s. But different strokes for different folks.
I dont particulalrly hate this band and actually liked more of the music after watching the RockStar INXS. Have a greater appreciation for their music but of course all done with the original band. @@kimberlywalker3970
Old time rock n roll - Bob Seger
Round and Round - Ratt
Turn up the Radio - Autograph
Nothin But a Good Time - poison
High Enough- Damn Yankees
Everything except for Ratt cuz they’re smart enough to get Milton Berle in their video and in drag no less! Sincerely, DJP And cunt; Postmortem and Kilslug Sony; Earache 🇬🇧 Columbia and TAANG!! Records @ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Boston Massachusetts Amerikkka naturally. Cheers 🥂
I think Ryan should have worn a polo shirt with a sweater tied around the shoulders. That would be some real preppy yacht rock.
That combination did occur to me but i was putting the outfit together as cheaply as possible off the Walmart clearance racks. It would’ve been VERY yacht rock though! 😅
Danger Zone - Kenny Loggins……Live to Tell - Madonna……Here Comes the Rain Again - Eurythmics. All took on another dimension with mind altering substances consumed in the 80s!
My number 1 pick for this topic is Surrender by Cheap Trick. I've heard a couple other Cheap Trick tracks and enjoy them but haven't had a desire to check out and of their other music. Surrender, on the other hand, might be my all time favorite song.
If you like Surrender you'll probably like 100 other songs from them
Phil Collins heavy gated drums on Frida's album and he produced it I think.
Great show, folks! My picks: Piano man-Billy Joel. Come on Eileen-Dexys midnight runners. 99 Luft ballons Nena.
Somewhere I've got Slurpee cups with baseball players on it from 1972.
Totally agree with Pete...can NOT whatsoever get into the Clash beyond 2-3 songs and all my good friends don't understand my thinking!
Nice topic and interesting responses.
Here goes:
Led Zep - Kashmir (just not that into this classic band - but adore this song)
Lou Gramm - Midnight Blue (care nothing about his music or Foreigner for that matter - i can listen to it over and over - video has huge nostalgia value for me)
Fatboy Slim - The Rockerfeller Shank - He has other songs? I wouldn't know.
The Decembrists - Sixteen Military Wives - Not a bad band, just never hit the sweet spot for me like this song.
TV on the Radio - Lazerray - A well-regarded band that I really don't care about except for this one.
Add:
Viena by Ultravox
"I Can Dream About You" by Dan Hartman - can't explain why I like it, ...
but I do. 🤷♂
He also sings Free Ride from Edgar Winter
1. Queen of Hearts (Juice Newton)
2. Homesick (ARS)
3. Possum Kingdom (The Toadies)
Monster Mash waa reissued as a 45 here in Australia in 1973. At the time I was in my early/mid teens when it came out and was unaware that it was an old song reissued. There was an album reissued with it too.
Yacht Rock costumes - boy, now that's a party. Talking of which Mike and the Mechanics 'live in Baden' on UA-cam is pretty good for that kind of light rock.
I like a lot of Grateful Dead music and I'm one of the few Dead Heads that like the Built to Last album, and the song A Touch of Grey.
Great picks by Steve to start. The B'sides of Spirit in the Sky - Canned Ham and Milk Cow were pretty good
Changes- Yes
My Michelle- Guns N Roses
Games Without Frontiers- Peter Gabriel
Cover Me- Bruce Springsteen
Kryptonite- 3 Doors Down
Misunderstanding- Genesis
1)Styx, the grand illusion.
2)Grand Funk, we're an american band
3)Boston, peace of mind
Not a fan of any of these bands but their hits are pretty good.
You like Peace of Mind but not Foreplay / Longtime?
Show ideas: best 2nd albums, bands you used to hate/now love & vice versa.
Poison was one of my choices too, but I would have chosen the song something to believe in. Nick give this song a shot, if you haven't heard it yet. I think you'll dig it and dig the lyrics too. Very unpoisony
Love Chris Alo
I agree with Count Ralfus' choices, although I do plan to try some more Ram Jam as I'm sure there must be other stuff similar to Black Betty, so ought to be good listening. A while back, I would have also said BOC "Don't Fear The Reaper" - because it was all I knew, but have bought a couple of albums so finding more I like by them now.
Off the top of my head, my picks:
(1) Living Colour - "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" - I bought the album "Time's Up" but can't say I love anything else on it.
(2) Faith No More - "We Care A Lot" - I bought the album "Introduce Yourself" but.... ditto
(3) The Knack - "My Sharona" - one of my favourite power-pop tracks, but I never delved any deeper...
HM: Crash Test Dummies "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" - liked the track, but not sure I could listen to a whole album?
Addicted To Love - Robert Palmer
All Out of Love - Air Supply
Baby blue - Badfinger
Lwet your love flow - The Bellamy brothers
We're gonna rock around the clock - Bill Haley
All right - Christopher cross
Killer Klowns - The Dickies (sound track)
Hocus Pocus - Focus
Radar Love - GOlden Earring
My Sharona - The Knack
Easy Lover - Philip Bailey + Collins
Bird of Paradise - Snowy White (probably my all time fav song).
Also I think Autograph gets not enough love here here! Sign in Please has some great songs and that's the stuff is a great album too. Songs like ''Built for Speed, hammerhead, send her to me. If you are into glam/hair there is some enjoyment to be found imo.
Nice video 😄👍
Wow, I'm so jealous man. One hell of a collection 😊 lucky guy😅
For me ....Dreadlock Holiday 😁🎸😁
Art for Art's Sake and I'm Not in Love are classic 10cc though
Turn Up The Radio- Autograph
My Heart Will Go On- Celine Dion
Margaritaville- Jimmy Buffett (R.I.P.)
The other song from that Michael Bolton album was 'She Did The Same Thing.
Charlie Daniels band, “Devil Went down to Georgia” is a great pick!
I like A Winters tale by David Essex :-).
So GREAT to be back with my "Friends" with HVS!!!!! But, Pete "London Calling" is one of the BEST albums of alltime!!!!
My pick is a song from Device. Not a fan of them or David Draiman’s main band Disturbed but “You Think You Know” has a really catchy chorus.
Eddie grant! I don’t wanna dance is another great Eddie song.
Great topic! I'd go: Come Undone by Duran Duran (hated all those early MTV videos), One by U2 (everything else is just "limp", Frankenstein by Edgar Winter (because he doesn't sing!). Cheers!
Not a fan of the Load/Reload era, but my pick is Hero Of The Day. They put work into that one.
I agree Outlaw Torn is the best Load and Reload song. I didnt even know until many years later that the song got cut down by a minute and there's a even longer studio version thats on The Memory Remains single.
Hero of the Day, The Outlaw Torn, The Memory Remains all great songs for me. And I'll throw in King Nothing - that is a beast of a song!
Until it sleeps is a great song from that era
Early Whitesnake is criminally underrated. Nighthawk (Vampire Blues) might be one of my all time favorite songs. That entire "Trouble" album fucking rips!
