The guy will do anything to be relevant and popular. He did a country album for God's sake! Plus he was a fixture in the band Scandal before his own band broke out. He's a total tool.
Agreed, Bon Jovi is terrible. I saw them open for Ratt back in the day and they were awful, still to this day the worst live band I have ever seen.
I see what you're saying. He headlined at Castle Donington 1987. Whenever the MC mentioned his name, the crowd booed. I left after Dio's set to get the shuttlebus back to Derby. There were loads of headbangers doing the same.

I was with you every step of the way, but then you hit REM. You gotta understand that their hits (which often were indeed sappy) all came after they moved to Warner Brothers for one of the biggest advances ever at that time. Their indie stuff on IRS remains some of the most gorgeous and unique music of the 1980's; enigmatic, elegiac, energetic, well-played and arranged, and unlike anyone active at the time (and the Byrds/Velvets comparisons were very overcooked). Any of their first four albums could make my top-10 lifetime favorites. Not for everyone, I suppose. Oh, and that Dylan guy sure is good (except for a few disasters). But the rest of your list could have easily been my own.

Dylan between 62 and 1978 was astounding . After that , embarrassing at best . I also used to hate the voice . I changed my mind . I now LOVE his singing on most of those albums . Give the King another chance !

Sometimes voices just grate on people and I get that. I really hate Elvis Costello's voice and actually Mick Jagger has never done it for me either but that's just our personal ear and I don't fault anyone who can stand them. I personally love a lot of Dylan's singing through the years and he seems to have rubbed off on Tom Petty significantly. cheers

My intro to Dylan was the covers are great, Dylan's version - not as much. I changed my mind.
I even prefer All Along the Watchtower by Dylan over Hendrix now. And when you put into context 1965 what Dylan had going on with Mike Bloomfield on lead guitar, he was pretty hard rocking by the standard of the time.
His teaming up with Lanois was some of the best music he's ever made, a fucking brilliant producer.
May I add “Dave Matthews Band”? 😋

I saw Nickelback at a festival years ago and the show was in a parking lot and 20 minutes into their set several people had to be transported to the hospital for splitting their heads on the pavement and the lead singer told us we were all idiots - like 4 or 5 people represented the intelligence of the entire crowd...I was blown away by the music (they were new then, not tired and old) but I never liked them after he insulted us.
For a positive guy it didn't take much to take him over the edge to hate bands

We all feel so much of a range of emotions. Like and dislikes. The bands are in fact as he says. He still is a positive man . He used this video as an outlet to relate with his fans . I for one totally agree with him and also think being positive is a healthy choice. He clearly said he doesn’t talk about this on his channel much and per multiple requests made this.
I'd rather have my eyes poked out with burning sticks than listen to Bon Jovi.
I’m not sure I’d even recognize more than a coupla of their songs, but She’s a Little Runaway was kinda fun.
Their are other bands in that genre that are way worse then them

As a person who actually does like quite a lot of the artists here, this was honestly kind of a nice change of pace. It's nice to hear differing opinions y'know?
I agree with each and every one of these. I would add to that list Hootie and the Blowfish, the Indigo Girls, and Coldplay. The 90s, in general, had very little that I enjoyed as well, punk is musical anathema to me and pop punk is hell on earth. That was the first decade where I completely tuned out the contemporary and the mainstream and listened solely to prog, fusion, and older music.
I have always respected punk for its cultural impact and historical legacy. Musically, however, no other genre has tried so hard to convince everyone that you don't need to know how to play instruments to start a musical revolution.

Same here, I don't like a single artist mentioned by Pete. Motley Crue at #1 have a few cool songs but at least someone like Blackie Lawless could be called a real musician which is why he's in W.A.S.P. and not Motley Crue, I guess. Alice Cooper once said there's a danger to Crue that he liked, he was probably speaking about their early days and bad boy image. Another band I don't get, is Radiohead and U2 lost me decades ago, haven't listened to them since 1985.

Their first 2 albums were really good, but, they lost me when 'War' came out and every song was killed for me because of radio-overplay. I never was interested in anything else they released after that due to their poppier sound.

Oh yes ... Oasis ... they literally went into studios and captured boredom!
Their first 2 albums were great. They captured what it was like to be young in the mid-90s. And for 2,3 years Noel had an incredible run as a songwriter writing sing along anthems, that connected with their audience in a special way. After that they lost their magic unfortunately and never really developed musically.
They only reason they played so loud in concert is to keep people from falling asleep
I don't know? I still like their live at Wembley DVD. Great concert. It's not a metal/hard rock band.

Axl( Asshole ) Rose was rude to the crowd and just like the SEPULTURA - Morbid Visions album the guitar players never bothered to tune their instruments together . People paid a lot of money to get treated like shit by a band that was too fucked up to play in tune or even in time . The best Guns n Roses shows were the cancelled ones

Hi Pete been missing for quite a while and our tastes are pretty similar… I have to say that this is the funniest episode and I laughed out loud some of the descriptions about what you don’t like about these bands just knocked me off my chair LOL I have to say this is probably the one video where our taste lined up 100% every man you named it for all the reasons you name them was so spot on… Keep on doing what you’re doing thanks!

I never liked them. Over here in the UK they were huge a few years back. Everybody talking about how brilliant they were constantly. I was just thinking they suck so bad and the guy can’t sing. Not good live either from what I’ve heard.

Damn bro....You nailed this. I agree 100% with you here. I would add that many of those shit buttrock bands are the reason why the 90's went to hell for metal. The fact that bands like poisen, winger, warrant, bullet boys, motley crew.......on and on, were classified as metal, soiled the genre.
Also, I am so sick of bands like Pearl jam, GnR and Nirvana that literally have so little material, and then they are considered gods etc. Compared to so many of the bands that you speak of that have profound legacy, and extremely deep discogrophies
to get no respect to these one hit wonders is a crime. I think of Opeth for example. The amount of great/complex music they have produced is amazing, and those other bands could not even attempt to achieve anything like that.

The reason a lot of bands in the 90s irritate people like you and me is because they were "products." Their image, their music, was all designed by formulae that record companies felt was attractive to young people based on a whole host of things that had been tried before. The antihero front man, a tragic figure struggling to keep his bangs out of his face as well as addiction. That sort of thing. When Generation Y rediscovered the Beatles, then every British pop group had to have a vocalist that whined like Lennon. I was dragged around to so many of these concerts in the 90s and early 2000s, and wanted to puke everytime I would see the whole audience jump up and down like my 8-year-old when I would tell him we're going to an amusement park. That jumping thing was a specific kind of behavior for fans of skater rock and pop punk of the era, like headbanging and "devil horns" were for metal, I guess. But anyway, you named all the bands and kind of music that drives me nuts. I also agree about Bob Dylan, but I must confess that his later albums, when he started growling more like Dr. John, really have started to grow on me. Thanks for the fun show and the memories!

I love watching this rant. I'm with Pete on all these ....it's like my voice of discontent with these bands. Only Motley got any $ from me for their first vinyl. Pearl Jam I got their first cd (record club), but the rest, just loved to hate. I love the feeling Pete puts into this, he really turns on the contempt in a funny way.

I agree! Twisted Sister and Dokken are the only 2 hair metal bands that I can stand. I don't understand how people worship Crue. They're sloppy, disgusting, drugged up, sexed-up, and misogynistic. What confuses me about bands like Motley, Poison, and other hair bands is that they had this stylistic idea that was like... "We're so masculine that we don't even need to look like men." Ughh!!! The REAL metal bands of the 80s were Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Metallica, Megadeth, Mercyful Fate, etc. Iron Maiden is AWESOME! 🤘, Motley Crue is TRASH! 👎

I know they're just as ridiculous, but I do respect Dee Snider after what he, Frank Zappa, and John Denver did in 1985. It takes guts to stand up for your music and your art to a bunch of white politician's wives.
I had a friend in the 80’s that mocked me because I liked new wave and punk and didn’t like bands like Motley Crue and all those nasty hair bands. I kept trying to tell him I wasn’t against metal and that what I considered metal was Iron Maiden,AC/DC , Metallica ,Anthrax,Black Sabbath ( Ozzy years) etc.etc. I was actually into harder stuff then he was.
I don't understand either. I don't see anything special or significant about them. They're just like any other hair metal band. Also can't stand anyone in that band except Mick Mars. They all just come off as whiney, colossal douchebags stuck in puberty

There was a period when they were the best band on the planet. I saw them in 1991 in Cleveland. They could have ducks the night before and the night after but on that night they were the best.

I couldn't agree more with your entire list and for all the reasons you cited. You literally listed a who's who of popular bands that us younger X geners, now in our early to mid 40s, were inundated with on MTV from the time we were in the 6th grade up through college. I got into most of the bands you listed for like a minute when I was younger, when adolescent group conformity, peer pressure, and a recording industry hell-bent on marketing this stuff to our generation specifically, sort of brainwashed me into acting like I liked music I really didn't that much at all, but then eventually I went, "okay where did I place my Rush and Zeppelin albums?" And then I was reformed.

Motley Crue's appeal was about being young and wild and sex crazed. For guys in their 50's and 60's trying to pull that off is beyond pathetic.
Shout At The Devil was such a great album, but it just turned to shit after that.
The first two albums are great and I’ve noticed a lot of hard core heavy metal fans like those two. After those two is when people’s opinions start to change

True Story: Bob Dylan asked Slash to play guitar on one of his tracks in the mid-90s. The released version of the song had the Slash solo cut out .. according to Dylan: 'it sounded too much like GnR' .. lol :)

The rant on more modern music is more of an indictment as to the state of the industry itself. They aren't willing to take chances on new bands like they would in the 70's. Who needs artistry, soul or talent? We need $$ never mind a diversity of sound. Makes one wonder if we'll ever hear the thunder of a Moon, the lyrics of Fagen and Becker, the screams of a Gillan or the re-defining sounds of Jimi. The 70's were a time of experimentation and the diversification of sound was instantly recognizable and mainly unique. Take prog for an example, no one would ever confuse the sounds of Yes, King Crimson, ELP or Tull.
When I think of the Seattle sound-Alice in Chains, Soundgarden! Pete is right on-all of the bands he mentioned really suck. R.E.M. was decent.

Felt strange to hear Pete bashing some of the music that I really love like Nirvana, Oasis and Bob Dylan. No one gets it all and that's really all so interesting. Music is all so important and it's great to hear it being discussed in the way that it's done on this channel. Music's the best and it's the best when it's shared.
I can't stand Nirvana or Oasis wither and agree with Pete's reasons. Oasis were generic dullards, stealing from their (supposed) influences, the 'rugby team' band of choice at pubs in the UK for years and THE most singularly un poetic, un original and boring band in existence. The McDonalds of music.
Oasis might be kinda the Whitesnake of the rock-pop genre of the 90's, to me at least it was and still is 'cause it meant so much to me in my teenage years, the first band that did it to me. First two albums + the b-sides and the last two, the 6th and the 7th, were good ones according to my taste, albums in the middle were unfortunately mediocre as a whole.
Nirvana had a really short run but those three albums and the b-sides and live takes were great in my mind, excellent melodies, brilliant singer and just really excellect in their own genre of 80-90's edition of punk-rock music in my mind.
Pitbull's songs are catchy? So is influenza.

RIGHT ON ! The first one time I heard the single 'Sweet Child O'mine' It was clear this band had the goods to deliver. But ! I saw Axle live at Vegas Hard Rock Hotel 2014. My date and I walked through the metal detectors to set off the alarms , gold chains big buckle, watch , handcuffs , ladies earings... the usher rushed over to say you went in through the out door , go back . I replied 'you want me to ring the bells again so your boss hears? ...No have a seat , when we open the back doors get in with the crowd. So we got in to the floors front stage . Sweaty Axle was close enough to piss on us. Hey , from Canada. First thing his security came over and said remove your black Western hat , It reminds Axle of Slash. SLASH. Post breakup. Brian Blaze I agree wholeheartedly, but there are some BIG Kiss fans here and Pete likes them. I just don’t get them and never did, even when they were relatively fresh. Maybe it’s just me. I don’t like comic books either.
I mean I like stuff like Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost and Mercyful Fate alot. But KISS's music never resonated with me personally. I'm sure many disagree with me and that's fine. Everyone likes the music they like for certain reasons.
@@ObsidianBlaze9 I understand you. From modern perspective you would expect from their image that Kiss are into black metal. But the fact is when they appeared in 74' they called them American Black Sabbath - loud, hard music, shocking image, candles and fire...many religious groups protested against them, they had to cancel some tours in South America...they have their part in rock evolution, it took some time for some genres to be born. For example, i really like Bathory, but I dont care much for Venom and Mercyful Fate, although I know they had influence on many great bands.
The thing with KISS is: listen to Paul Stanley's songs and skip most of the Gene Simmons tunes. Paul was an excellent glam rock singer and songwriter up until around 2000. Gene was always an average singer with a croaky voice and his songwriting extremely generic (with a few exceptions of course like Unholy and his songs on Lick It Up).
John "Cougar" Mellencamp. He opened for Kiss in '79, & he was rude to his roadies & band mates. His music didn't move me, either. He's come thru with some good stuff, but I've never warmed up to him. I can't get passed my first impression.
I like his hits, but I cannot stand him. His arrogance is off the charts.
You never mention U2 very much or haven't done an album rank about. I knew they were always good, but for some reason I stuck them in mish mash of commercial bands. You know, like the some of the ones you mention. However, when "Achtung Baby" came out, there was no way I could ever say a bad word about them. Yes, still commercial and all that, but that very interesting album hit a creative peak I certainly didn't expect. That said, I'm still not a big fan of U2, but I certainly could not deny their importance from that point on.

I certainly appreciate Nirvana and Pearl Jam for their influence, but in the grunge world, in my opinion, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and of course Soundgarden all put out more substanstive and musically interesting albums.
Yeah, I was really hoping that he would mention his opinion on STP and Alice in chains, and Soundgarden. Those bands are really the only 90s bands that have stuck with me past my 90s phase in high school. Also strangely my guilty pleasure band is the gin blossoms.

Agree. At the end of the day AIC, Soundgarden and STP beat PJ and Nirvana IMO too.
Ten is an all time classic, but they gradually grew less interesting after that, although they continued to be a great live band. I never really got into Nirvana at all, and don't understand their godlike status. Smashing Pumpkins was one of the better bands of that era too, again, for a short time. And jane's Addiction..those first two albums, amazing.
Steven Homan Yeah the Gins get some surprising attention from metal heads. The Black Moods are from Scottsdale as well. Not metal but very bluesy and like able. Talent. That helps.
Pretty good list. The only entry I might take issue with is R.E.M....yeah, "Everybody Hurts" is a pretty whiny song, but most of their stuff is pretty decent.

Your list is pretty spot on. My only pause is Bob Dylan. He's more a folk singer/songwriter. This genre doesn't really require the vocalist to be that skillful or even interesting. It's all about the lyrics propelled by the instrumentation. In fact, it's kinda a thing for the singer to sound bad to add to the authenticity. It wouldn't really work with a classically trained singer. Eg Woody Guthrie, Towns Van Zant etc. Dylan's album "Free Wheelin' " was written and recorded when he was 21. This album may change your opinion, slightly. His voice isn't too whinny on it and it is hard to imagine that a 21 year old kid could write like that! It's a stone cold masterpiece. Just a thought but I agree with the rest.
Dylan is also a terrific melodist under its whinny voice that i love too,it's why there are so many covers of robert zimmerman songs althrough ages
1st three bands you mentioned - I totally agree! I hate Poison, I don't like Motley Crue, and what can you say about GnR...When the debut came out, I was 15 and I loved it, I brought me to Rock and Metal...but I left GnR behind me quite quickly...

So interesting to me that my musical interests line up with a bunch of the bands you love (Dream Theater, Rush, etc.) but also with so many that you don’t (Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Dylan). I like some of their songs, mostly the ones that made it to promo videos. Most came from one of their early 2000's albums. "Before I forget," Sulfur, and Duality. Those songs seemed to be songs, propelled by their style. Their other tunes seem to be more about style.
I think you should also have mentioned "anything by Queensryche after Empire" too. I saw that band with five friends on the "Empire" tour and it was the first time they did all of "Operation Mindcrime" live - it was just out of this world, absolutely stunning, we came out of that theatre totally buzzing, definitely one of the top five live gigs I have ever been to.
Cut to 2003-ish, virtually the same group of us went to see them on "Operation Mindcrime II" when they did both albums live and we were treated to Geoff Tate running around on stage with a giant rubber syringe. We left about the third song into "Mindcrime II", utter rubbish and having witnessed a "Mindcrime I" that was just awful. We were actually laughing and shaking our heads as we left.
I had all of the albums up to Mindcrime II, after that concert I sold everything that was "Promised Land" and beyond. I've ignored anything by Geoff Tate since because he's a complete twat, the few tracks I've heard of Queensryche with the ex-Crimson Glory singer (whatever his name is) seem nothing special to me.
What a really sad parody of themselves that band became!
@Russ Ingram The problem is that when you are a band that opens their career with really strong material that reaches the absolute pinnacle with Operation Mindcrime, and then Empire as an excellent follow up and "antidote", the only way is down from there.
Chris de Garmo was a huge loss - I remember him saying in an interview that his dad passed away during the making of Promised Land, and his heart was no longer in Queensryche. That was always a huge turning point for the band, they were never the same without him.

I also saw QR on Empire Tour(Germany Fall 1990.)but for me is huge disappointed because the Geoff don't sing in high registers,guitars is detuned,not sharp like on the O:M,concert start and finish with anticlimax(Resistance/Silent Lucidity)....Trandy outfit with fancy shirts and fuckin' headscarfs.....btw,first 3 albums+EP is 24 carat gold....Beginning Of The End.......
While Poison is not one of my top favorite metal bands, I think their music is okay. While Bob Dylan definitely did not have a decent voice, his songwriting was so brilliant that he is one of the rare artists that you can look past his singing voice. Everyone else on Pete's list I completely agree with. I hate Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and all things Grunge. I hate all things Rap/Hip Hop, too. I don't like Alternative, either. My most hated decade of music is the 1990s. It was the most destructive decade for music.That's the decade where the quality of music went downhill, deteriorated and never recovered. The 2000s and onward are the continuation of the downward spiral in music which started in the 90s.
