Pretty sure itch is not a separate feeling it is pain and the itch receptor is the same as the pain receptors nociceptors Ever notice when you have a small irritant on your skin you’ll be like “ahh” and slap or brush or scratch the area instinctively Also to hanks story I notice that if an area is numb and it gets cold it itches inside for some reason so perhaps the itch sensation is a negative response of sorts perhaps it’s generated by a lack of signal from the nociceptor at a time of it being checked for a baseline signal that should be there Perhaps when an irritant is on the skin but isn’t doing damage to activate the nociceptor the nociceptor will shut off a signal to notify the brain that something is abnormal but not damaging currently
Let's not forget the suture ant. They're so cool. They have actually been used to close wounds when sutures aren't available. When the ants bite they can't open their mandibles again. The are used to close wounds then their bodies are removed and their heads are left still holding the skin closed, like sutures. So cool!
Hasn't Coyote Peterson been bitten by a bunch of stuff on camera? idk if he's done every bug but he feels like the closest to someone who is capable of redoing this - like he's got such a head start
Yes, he did a series on his UA-cam where he progressed through the most painful bug bites/stings. All I really remember is some kinda small bug with a 360° rotating stinger. I think it was a velvet ant but don't really recall.
In the Netherlands there is an entire children's tv program dedicated to quite exactly your suggested format. Two people first do some quiz, the loser gets bitten or stung by an insect or plant. Lots of fun 😂
Hank, I am a tour guide in South America. In the Atlantic rainforest! I'm from the UK but I've been living here for the past 10 years and trained as a forest guide. I'm the only English speaking guide at my base so if you ever want an English guide around let me know! Hehe ;)
Hearing that bush pilot story I'm worried about the guy that goes to alaska and survives out in the freezing weather. A couple times I've heard him talk about the pilot being delayed.
@@cortos_9733 I assume all at once while the bee was hovering, since that gives them each a pair of limbs to fight. Side note, since the pitch of the hum of an insect's wings is directly relational to its size, a human-sized bee would sound like a particularly loud helicopter.
Something in the warehouse where I work has been biting me a lot lately, and when I scratch I get welts from scratching, too. This is not a good week for me to be watching this video!
Fun fact, histamine release in the skin is why opioids make people itchy. Many Mu opioid receptor agonists, like morphine, release histamine from mast cells, which are directly associated with the allergic response. Histamine plays many other roles, too. It causes stomach acid to secrete through the H2 receptor, and Zinc, which deactivates stomach acid secretion, causes more histamine to release as the body tries to reach homeostasis. Prescription anti-acids block the H2 receptor. Also, black pepper increases histamine by working as a reversible MAOI, which is one way black pepper helps to aid digestion. In the brain, histamine plays a totally different role. It releases in the morning as you wake up, along side noradrenaline, dopamine, and cortisol. In fact, H3 receptors butt up right next to dopamine 1 and 2 receptors, and histamine helps those dopamine receptors engage to take on dopamine better. Without it, those dopamine receptors can't deactivate the stress response caused by the cortisol release. If you ever felt groggy and a little panicked after waking up, you may have been experiencing low histamine levels in the brain. Even more, while the other transmitters decrease in level a few hours after waking, histamine levels continue to remain elevated until it is time to sleep. It is crucial for wakefulness and memory, and without it we get drowsy. This is why 2nd generation antihistamines like loratidine were designed to not cross the blood brain barrier. In contrast, Benedryl (diphenhydramine) can cross the BBB where it blocks H1 receptors and conks you out. The serotonin reuptake inhibition (among other mechanisms) also contributes to this sedative effect. Thanks for reading my info dump.
Wow. This really helped connect a couple separate packets of knowledge I already had regarding prescription antacids and antihistamines. I genuinely appreciate your infodump.
Holy Shnikeys!! I haven't actually WATCHED the tangents in a while. But I happened to watch this one and I'm like Why does Sam look old and Hank looks like a chitlin? Sam is going gray, Hank has fluffy curls... omfg wtf is going on!
Hank's alway's had a baby face honestly. He briefly looked his age when chemo was making him feel like $hit, and now he's bounced back with a cute new hairdo.
21:03 I actually think this can be answered by the colonial period when Spain owned both Mexico and the Philippines. Both countries were prominent trading ports used of cross-pacific trading.
when was the last time someone spent a hank buck , more like spent a penny for the tangest they run on next sci show I would like to see one on sayings , like hot under the collar , spent a penny , eufamisms a way of saying things without saying it
Got stung by a wasp the other day, swollen, red, itchy and awful. I finally scratched the scab off along with the stinger. Immediately it started to feel better, within hours less red l could tell the stinger was gone and healed by the next evening.
The Schmidt Insect Sting Pain Index is perhaps not necessarily a useful tool for predicting how painful a sting or bite is going to be, as much as it is an interesting look into how different people experience different 'painful things.' The velvet ant is one of the 4s on the list and Schmidt's description of it makes it sound like you'll be wishing for death for hours (he ranked it among the top 3 most painful stings), but I know Clint from Clint's Reptiles tried it together with someone else and they hardly reacted at all. For them, the burn was fairly mild and it went away after about an hour or so. Painful, for sure, but hardly the soul-crushing ordeal it had been to Schmidt. Why would this be the case? I don't know I'm neither medical doctor nor entomologist, but I think it's probably a combination of slight differences in chemoreceptors making it harder for the ouch compounds to tell them they should feel pain; maybe some immune system differences neutralising a lot of the venom more quickly; and maybe to a lesser degree differences in pain tolerance. Or who knows, maybe those particular velvet ants were just shy and couldn't perform as well in front of a camera due to stage fright. Like I said, neither a medical doctor nor an entomologist.
WTF man? Imagine being a 9yr old listening to this in the summer or fall, and this is how you find out Santa isn't real... some nerd on a bug talk show ruins your entire life and doesn't even care.
Separately I've been bitten by one fire ant as well as a whole swarm and I can say if it's just one fire ant for sure one. The swarm on the other hand definitely higher.
My worst insect bite is one I never felt & only found out about 3 months later when it turned out I had Lyme disease 🙃🙃🙃 So while the bite was happening there was no pain lol but months later there was much pain 😅😅😅 What score does that get on the Schmidt scale 😂😂
14:10 hey Hank, that's essentially Elf on the Shelf, Santa Claus, Coyote, the Christian concept of Satan, and any number of other boogeymen still used today to frighten children into good behaviour.
So, it's clear to me now. You do not have actual broadband. Welcome to the draft horse in Alabama life. You don't even need to go to LatAm for that. :D
Arnt fire ants dangerous not because a single bite hurts but because they tend to get all over the soon to be victim and then all begin biting at the same time?
100% disagree. Aquatic Macroinvertebrates are “bugs” and also can bite. Esp if flying “bugs” count, cuz many of them spend much of their lives as aquatic.

Hanks quite "who do you think i am?" Sent me into orbit. I was laughing right along side Ceri
That ad read for Shopify sneaking in ads for all of Hanks companies was a work of art

He worked his way all the way through the Schmit scale and then went and got stung by several bugs not in the list in order to expand the list
Yes. But not all coyotes agree.
Yes but he really sucks and a huge component of the entomology outreach community hates him.
Been a big fan of this show since the beginning. I love seeing it on UA-cam so I can appreciate your faces!
"developed shingles a number of times," christ dude that is some bad luck
well shingles can often become chronic (usually are iirc) and have flare ups

Shut up, Sam! Santa is REAL. 🎄
He came down to visit when I was in Alert and said hi!
Defining a bug bite was briefly Dr. Seuss.
There's already a show "Kings of Pain" and they get bit to make a better pain index
This is a great channel
You're pronouncing prurito perfectly my friends

cancer treatment gave Hank a hard reboot once he recovered, it's like the portrait of Dorian Grey where Sam shows Hank's true age.
As poetic as it is hilarious
Hank's alway's had a baby face honestly. He briefly looked his age when chemo was making him feel like $hit, and now he's bounced back with a cute new hairdo.
VESPA MEANS WASP. Literally!
Thank you!
I'm almost 100% sure I learned the "Butt one more thing" fact already... from Hank Green. 😂 It sounds EXTREMELY familiar.
Have you guys never heard of/seen Kings of Pain? They do different bug bites and stings and things like that
When a scishow tangent is uploaded yk it's gonna be a great day!
24:45 Hank Green fanfiction? 😂

Okay but for the record I’d pay good money for a book of Tangents poetry.

fire ants bite and sting tho

Coyote Peterson has been bit/stung by enough to assist in the re-organizing of the pain index.
Scorpions are not bugs, those are death machines in a compact-er form.

I can't remember the name of the show but there is a show where a guy let's dozens of different kinds of insects bite and sting him
Coyote Peterson has done the sting pain scale.
I would assume they puke up the beetle larvae because the larvae start eating them from the inside out so they try to get rid of them
ow i have a land dwelling arthorpod bite
Coyote perterson did the smit pain index and posted it on UA-cam
What's the difference between bed bug and anything else? DF6BA!
They did a show a few years ago with a guy who gets bit by everything. Was that whole spiel sarcasm?
Ahoy! 🖤

cool

Uhhh, Coyote Peterson?
Sorry to be the pedant of tangents, but bees don't want or need pollen. They're collecting honey not pollen.
You're trolling
@ I am not. They're after nectar. The pollen and function of pollination is a byproduct of their cravings for sugar
