Dylan Marron is so perfect, with his perfect hair and his perfect smile and his perfect eyes. And of course, he is a scientist too! Sorry, I had to nerd out for a moment because I first heard of Dylan Marron from Welcome to Night Vale. So it's amazing to see him on Scishow Tangents!

I've loved Dylan since his WTNV days - actually thrilled to hear he was a writer on Ted Lasso too, because I loved that show. Always iconic! This was such a fun episode!

The “memory misassignment” theory of Deja Vu makes sense to me personally cuz there was one time early morning i was not fully awake when I actually experienced it happen, in kind of a realtime way, where one moment the thought was clearly fresh and next moment it was catalogued as an old memory all while I watched it happen.

I played a Life is Strange game where your paranormal ability was empathy. I thought it was lame at first, but by the end of it, I'm convinced that is a very powerful and potentially evil ability.

Noooooo! My question got picked for the bonus, but I can't afford another Patreon subscription to hear the answer! 😢 Oh, well; I hope whatever the answer is, it was interesting to the richer people who patronize Tangents 💗
...if I were to cancel my SciShow patreon subscription and transfer that money to Tangents, that.... wouldn't really help the SciShow crew, would it? 😅
In other news, since Houdini was mentioned a few times, I'd like to share one of my favorite (relevant!) historical facts. Maybe a lot of people know this already, but Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle (the author of Sherlock Holmes) were close friends in real life. Thing is, Houdini spent a lot of time debunking mysticism, while Doyle was very much into the occult. They constantly butted heads about this, and it eventually led to the end of their friendship. Doyle insisted that Houdini must have some actual mystical powers, and Houdini kept trying to tell him, "No, it's an act, I can even tell you how I do it!" But Doyle was convinced Houdini was lying to him, and Houdini was frustrated at Doyle's occult insistence, and eventually that drove a wedge between them. They became public frenemies, with Doyle trying to publicly claim that Houdini was actually magic, and Houdini publicly trying to debunk Doyle himself.

I thought Deja Vu was dream stuff too! It must be some past explanation or urban myth that deja vu are dreams. I've been very convinced of that for as long as I can remember!

  • @GuanoLad
    @GuanoLad 2 місяці тому

An aspect of deja vu is that you think you know what's about to happen, but can't quite articulate it and then it happens and it feels confirmed in your perception, and that goes ongoing for about 30 seconds or so. I think I read somewhere that the electrical signals in your brain sort of bridge across to your memory area simultaneously while you are perceiving an event, and that's why your 'memory' tingles that way. That may be a debunked theory, but it makes sense to me.

42:34 Clearly the answer is by properly keeping your municipally approved dream journal. 😉

  • @bandana_girl6507

On the deja vu topic, what Dylan had described happening is actually closer to the related topic of deja reve, where there's the feeling that something is happening that has happened in a dream. However, his thoughts as to the mechanism of deja vu has been studied and is at least somewhat supported. I haven't looked into the methodology of those studies, but I would guess that some of it does also rely on the vagueness of remembered dreams.
As for what Sam had been describing having happened to him, that's also not actually deja vu but rather jamais vu, which is the feeling that a familiar experience is new. Interestingly, both of these happen with seizure aura, especially related to temporal lobe seizures

Dejavu that I've encountered strongest was from dreams. I dreamt of doing something rather common or mundane, so it was very likely to happen.

I have to chime in that you all seem to have missed the point of that scene in GHOSTBUSTERS: Bill Murray's character was TELLING the Hot Girl she was getting every card right, even though she wasn't, and shocking the dude every time, even the one time he miraculously got one right. It sets up that he's a sleazebag: he's essentially claiming to do psychic research as a way to hit on undergraduates.

So I have a question that I'm going to put out into the ether, since Hank mentioned Dr Brad Stanfield. There are so many health-related youtubers and my dad loves watching them. I think it's easy for him to get sucked in on the "supplements" that are going to change his life (and often there is financial incentive to the youtuber to push one particular brand of products). And of course it's easy to only talk about studies that support your messaging and not those that may refute it. I'd like to direct him towards better resources. How does one determine who to trust when your personal health and nutrition? It is something that feels incredible subjective and easy to spread misinformation and I don't know where to start.

The aesthetic of saying its a trick that takes lots of practice, etc. only became popular after Penn & Teller who was also an honest trickster (and sadly in the closet for almost 70 years, but had an amazing partner...)
Carl Sagan did the personality test thing In COS MOS 1980 on a High School classroom with simple horoscopes from the newspaper and handed them all the same results, same thing.
Most of the bad kindsa Schizophrenia has its onset before 25 as well.
