Various comments have already mentioned that the instrument she's playing is a harpsichord. I thought I'd just add a comment explaining the main difference between a harpsichord and a piano They're both keyboard instruments but when you press a key on a piano, it causes a hammer to hit the string, whereas on a harpsichord, pressing a key causes a plectrum to pluck a string. So they're very similar instruments but there's a very striking difference in the sound created.
One of my faves. The song is about the themes in the book, “Possessing The Secret of Joy,” by Alice Walker. Once you realize what the line, “when chickens get a taste of your meat” is about, it will chill you to the bone. Total Handmaids Tail type subject matter. A very important song about a very important piece of literature. Once you’ve read the book, you will not hear this song the same way ever again. 💔
1999 tour (5 1/2 weeks co-billed with Alanis) was my first live Tori show. Her live performance of The Waitress turned me into a mega fan and rewired my brain.
@@SaeedReacts. It sure has been a super fun ride watching you react to hearing these for the first time. These songs give me chills every single time, for over 2 decades of my life she can still bring me to tears. Thanks for finally discovering her!
I'm so impressed with how you courageously and sensitively related the subject matter. As a woman afflicted by some of 'her' torment, I appreciate your analysis and comments. Thank you. You're amazing with this! ❤
Thanks so much. I am really in awe of how she is able to express these things in her music in a real, raw and authentic way. And so poetic at the same time.
during the 1996 tour for "Boys For Pele," Tori had on stage her signature 9' Bosendorfer Imperial grand piano and also a harpsichord. on that tour and on the album she performs "Blood Roses" on the harpsichord. that 1999 live version is my absolute favorite next, I suggest "Waitress" from the Sessions @ West 54th performance.
if you're into her reimagining/reinventing her songs you need to hear her live version of Me & A Gun from Chicago in 2007 compared to the acapella version. I was at that Chicago show. she pulls out a butcher knife in the second verse, then pulls out a gun at the end. it was undeniably intense. it still stands as one of the best live shows I've ever been to.
Thanks for getting to this so quickly! I picked this particular pair not only due to the content of the song itself, but also just to show 1 song in 2 vastly different versions, which shows how her songs can and do change and grow over time. The plugged 98/Venus era in particular found a lot of older songs (which had only been played basically solo) found new life with the band and grew from something incredible and intimate to powerful and and passionate. Having seen Tori through almost every Era (my first show was during the Pele tour in 96, so I missed the first 2 tours), this era of Tori is my absolute favorite.. the pure awe of watching her go from theaters to arenas was just a magical experience. I'll probably have a few more comparisons coming up in the future. I very much enjoy your thoughtfulness while listing to these songs that can be heavy, but are also just pure magic.
Great song. It is incredible to see and hear the difference in these versions. Very powerful. Thanks again for this one! I also recorded a reaction to Northern Lad, hope to get that video uploaded sometime this week.
@@SaeedReacts.Yep. It was the prominent instrument that many Baroque period composers wrote their music on (Bach also wrote on the clavichord). The fortepiano would begin to replace it during the Classic period and later the modern piano during the Romantic period.
You’re right that the line “You hurt yourself today” comes from Nine Inch Nails. Tori was friends (some think it was a romantic relationship) with Trent Reznor in the mid-‘90s. They had a bad falling out, apparently caused by Courtney Love, who was friends with Trent and didn’t like Tori. Tori started using lines from “Hurt” when playing live in 1996, usually as an a cappella intro to Caught a Lite Sneeze (which already references the NIN album “Pretty Hate Machine” in the lyrics). By 1998, the addition of the lyrics from Hurt became more pointed. The zenith of this was the version of Caught a Lite Sneeze that she did at Sessions at West 54th. That’s actually pretty good pairing of two live performances you could do. Caught a Lite Sneeze on the harpsichord from the Benefit for RAINN concert ( ua-cam.com/video/l8Dcd4HlzMQ/v-deo.htmlsi=DE0N8aE9KnjwSO8l ) versus the Sessions at West 54th show ( ua-cam.com/video/oZfel7j_Cjs/v-deo.htmlsi=lZfxDkbAXGmEz8BU ) with the band. They were filmed only about 22 months apart (January 1997 and November 1998 respectively) but they are really different performances.
The version of Caught a Lite Sneeze from Sessions at West 54th has one of the hottest burns EVER. There's no question who she's referring to. I would give anything to be a fly on the wall when Trent saw that. Ouch.
I really enjoy artists who aren't afraid to reimagine their work. Kimbra does this a lot. In fact, only about 4 months after releasing her album, "Primal Heart," she released an EP called "Songs from Primal Heart: Reimagined" that completely reworked 4 of the songs from the album.
Me too! Must check out Kimbra at some point. I know her from Somebody i Used to know, but not familiar with her other music. Thanks for the recommendations
@@SaeedReacts. For OMV options, check "Top of the World", "Like They Do On the TV", "Replay", "Save Me", or "Come Into My Head" are good places to jump in. Live, the sessions from Sing Sing Studio, Glasshaus Presents, Rolling Stone's Take One, or the version of "Come As You Are" she did for Artist's Journal will give an idea of how she's a bit of a sonic chameleon.
I recommended the Blood Roses 1999 version which is just the best - thank you so much for your reaction to this gorgeous song. I love your insight into her work and you are in for a treat with her discography
i would like to mention that tori has talked about female genital mutilation in certain belief systems and they fed the parts to chickens in the specific reference she is making here, which is a very biting part of that line
Can you do Cooling by Tori next? The version from Welcome To Sunny Florida is my personal favorite. Honestly, any song from that dvd is amazing. They’re all on UA-cam please🙏 and thanks ☺️
Cooling is so gorgeous! One of her most beautiful songs, and definitely in my top 10! One kind reactor I also subscribe to watched it by my request and I was so shocked and excited! It's a sad, slow one, so be prepared if you listen to it. 😊
Check out her song "Crucify", it's amazing. She is a master of piano and storytelling. The meaning behind her songs is so often worth looking up. I only today discovered you've been reacting to her music! Dunno what's up with UA-cam, I've got the bell notifications turned on for you and yet non a peep via notifications or home feed until today's video.
That gesture you saw, your interpretation is sound, but you may notice her throwing those around with the band, it's also a signal to them for a transition.
She is using harpsicord for this song. She did a tour with it after that album's release but harpsichord go out of tune so easily, she had to abandon it and almost never brings up an actual harpsicord anymore - using keyboard setting instead.
Man, your Tori reactions are great. Keep up the good work. Since you're going down the Tori rabbit hole, you might as well listen to her sonic novels aka albums in order. You'll really see her artistey and growth. Y KANT TORi READ would be a great start from the mid 80s. Her first unofficial release before she found her sound.
Yikes. I find this song disturbing. The violence and dehumanization it depicts. Feels a bit too real with what's going on in the world. But as usual, Tori holds no punches with her subject matter. I don't see it so much as men preying on women, but also humans preying on humans. At least the demons that walk in human clothing.
She definitely holds no punches. I have noticed this in her songs. Its a mirror she is holding up. Definitely agree with your point about humans preying on humans.
Harpischord Punk Tori is my favorite
Same❤
THIS is how you react to Tori! You're doing it right! The Jimi Hendrix of the piano in my opinion!
Incredible artist! Thanks so much for watching.

Ooh! That is so interesting! And very helpful to get a better understanding of the difference. Thanks for sharing that.
I always loved the sound of the harpsichord. It is very unique to me compared to other keyboard instruments.

Precious Things references 9 inch nails, but imo it is a reference to the nails used to crucify Jesus - not the band NIN or Trent Reznor.

Love both of these versions but that last one with the band though…. Just another level❤
