My favorite musician by many miles. She's a genius, and when she decided to ask other musicians to collaborate with her, they too had to be gifted musicians tecnically and creatively.
@@danieljodrey I'm assuming others here have written about this, but Tori began playing piano at age 2.5 and at age five, she was the youngest person ever admitted to the Peabody Conservatory of Music with a full scholarship for being a piano prodigy. Her whole educational career involved full days of practice, and then at age 12 she began playing professionally in bars and hotels. She also has toured more than most musicians throughout most of her career. So 'hours of practice to get it right' is a little bit of an understatement! :) It has been most of the days of her whole life beginning before she could read or even speak full sentences.
@@DavidMichaelCommer I was referring to the musicians she had working with her but yeah. She is rather notorious for having no qualms at letting a new musician go if they come in late, hungover or not ready to get to work.
Tori is AMAZING. I love Regina Spektor so much, but Tori is on another plane of existence. This was her peak IMO. She still did great stuff, but this era was her best. The whole In Session performance is GOLD. Watch all of it. Also watch the VH1 Story Tellers. It’s about the same era. Again… love love LOVE Regina, but she ain’t got nothing on Tori’s emotional soundscapes. Cooling from this performance is a great song to watch. It’s a softer more beautiful side of her.
got to see her live in 96. it was fantastic. she came out, did one song, and asked for some aspirin because she partied too hard the night before lol. i believe it was in champaign urbana illinois.
When Tori was once asked in an interview about the changing tempos in her music, she said something to the effect of, "I wouldn't f@ck to a metronome, why would I play to one?"
The drummer is Matt Chamberlain an American session musician, drummer, producer and songwriter. He has played with various artists, including Pearl Jam, David Bowie, Tori Amos, The Wallflowers, Elton John, Lisa Marie Presley, Brandi Carlile, Garbage, and Macy Gray.
I'm sure Regina was inspired by Tori as many artists were. This version of Precious Things is more of a remix or alternate version. The original album version is a bit different.
The Waitress, in particular, if you want to see a song build up, duuuuude! From this same concert, you'll love it, if this made you an instant fan, you'll be properly worshipping her as the goddess she is after watching that one.
I was at this show. It was amazing. I was lucky enough that after waiting outside in line for hours and hours, some people got tired of waiting and left, and handed out their tickets. My friends who had seen Tori many other times and would have the opportunity to see her live in the future (I went to the USA just to see the shows) said I should take the remaining ticket to be on the floor, they were also allowed to go in but watched it from the recording area. I sat next to Woj on the last row of seats ... Linda and Richard thank you again!. Will never forget your kindness!
i got to meet Tori once, she was 6 feet away while she was looking right at me singing... like she was singing directly into my soul (I have an audio recording of it)
Oh, man, I love Tori Amos. I was an instant fan after I heard her song 'God' on the radio. Took me weeks to figure out who it sung it, thanks to it being 1994, and no internet to speak of. I manged to see her in concert twice. First time was 1996 in Los Angles, for the *Dew Drop Inn* tour, at the Greek Theater. It's an outdoor amphitheater in Griffith Park, nestled in a little canyon. Pretty Amazing show. Second time was in 2007 in Boston at the Orpheum Theater during a thunder storm. Also, an amazing show. What was really incredible was being able to download the whole concert a few hours after attending it. The tour was called *Legs And Boots* (bootleg, get it) and anyone could download any concert from the entire tour for ( i think) $12 each. Here's an interesting tidbit - Tori was the youngest person ever admitted to the prestigious Peabody Conservatory, at the age of 5. By age 11, her scholarship was cancelled, and was asked to leave because she wouldn't play the sheet music as written, and was too influenced by "rock and roll". She was very experimental and quite influential herself. I mean, who else but Tori Amos would use the harpsichord in modern music? She even inspired Neil Gaiman to create the character Delirium, for the Sandman comic book series. Please, check out some from music from her. 'Winter' is a simple, but beautiful song to start with. 'God' is the song that first caught my attention. Cheers
I’ve seen her live and we all ‘stormed’ towards the stage under her encouragement, it was an incredible experience to be that close to her performance.
Tori is a genius - and not afraid to take risks with melody, chords or arrangements. She’s also backed by phenomenal musicians both in the studio and live. She kills it pretty much every time. Great video sir!
Tori Amos is a virtuoso. She is amazing. Her album LITTLE EARTHQUAKES is absolutely exquisite. You have to listen to her live versions of “Me & a Gun” followed by “Winter” from her Llve Montreux show. It will change your brain pattern.
That's what I'm talking about, haha! I do my best not to bore you, Wave! ;) Real musicianship and creative originality always shows and stands up over time. No co-writers or trying to sound like someone else with creative genius and master technician Tori Amos, the Tony Iommi of piano. This was the great Matt Chamberlain on drums, one of the most sought after session drummers of this era. It's my understanding he is now drumming for Ghost.
That’s awesome that he’s been drumming for ghost! Such a cool guy. The drummer Tori has with her on tour right now is incredible as well. Similar techniques, amazing execution. Always blows me away when checking out new videos of live performances. Love that she still tours with that bassist. What he does with the verses on “Bliss” always impresses me. I call it the “Crying whale” sound. So much talent.
Tori Amos is next level. She started playing piano by ear at age 2. Still remains the youngest person to receive a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at age 5. Her father is a Methodist minister, and her mother's side follows the native American Cherokee way. People compare her to Kate Bush (I love her too), but Tori tours way more than her, and Tori's songs are a lot more intimate/personal than Kate's.
She was indeed sending hand signals. That last few minutes was all ad lib. That's what happens when you put a world class musician's together and let them all do their thing.
Yeah, they're hand signals! They're always an improv band when they're together so she signals when she's done tickling the ivories! Always one of my fave things to see, their own little language.
I don't know if it's mentioned elsewhere in the comments but yes, she is using hand signals. She doesn't play the songs strictly to the album. She likes to improvise so she'll use hand gestures to signal to Matt, Jon, etc. when to shift from one section to the next. Tori is freaking amazing.
I've been obsessed with Tori since 1994 when I was a freshman in high school. I was lucky enough to see her live near my small town in Maine a year later. She is amazing. An extremely talented pianist, vocalist, and poet. She sang her song "The Mission" with Trent Reznor and "Mamhammed" with Maynard from Tool. All of her albums are unique and amazing, but my favorite is her first album.
4:00 The first time I heard her I was 17 and she was playing this song at the Hard Rock in '99. It was so unlike any of the other music I listened to but it completely blew my mind and even though I never became a fan of her music this particular song - live - pulls at my soul whenever I hear/see it.
Wave, I started following you when you started reacting to BABYMETAL (MY FAVORITE BAND) but there was a time when Tori was my favorite musician. As a singer/ songwriter/ pianist, she is simply on another level. Tori was the youngest student ever admitted to Peabody institute at Johns Hopkins University on a full scholarship, she was 5 years old, she was kicked out at 11, evidently for "musical insubordination". Thank God. A deep dive into her work is certain to forge new musical neural pathways in your brain and soul. She is simply phenomenal. Father Lucifer, Hey Jupiter, Crucify, are a few suggestions from her, somewhere around, 16 studio albums...
“Father Lucifer” is one of my all time favourites. That opening and repeating piano hook is absolutely perfect and really tickles the brain. The bridge when she comes in with multiple vocals reminds me a bit of Kate Bush. I know she’s been compared to her quite often, but I really only hear it during that bridge. And maybe some bits and pieces here and there. But that falsetto vocal in that bridge is just so playful and really reminds me of Kate. “Hey Jupiter (Dakota Version)” is also on my top 10 list. And “Crucify” has one of the most BRILLIANT arrangements done in the last 50-60 years, no contest. The “Chains” (Post chorus?) where the guitar (Mandolin sounding almost) sort of answers her vocal, always gets me. LOVE a good “Question and answer” piece with a starting vocal, and then a responding instrument. You’ve got great taste! Take care 😄.
Saw her and the band play a couple day after they taped this show (Nov. 98). I was in the pit and it was by far the best thing I’ve ever seen or heard. Being a Tori fan for the past 30 years has been such a gift.
Tori Amos is one of those artists who are IMO much better live than on their studio albums, most likely because of her exceptional improvisatory talent! She is also a master at mixing her own songs with excerpts of songs by other artists, e.g. when she incorporated excerpts of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" and Bronski Beat's "Smalltown Boy" in her own song "Father Lucifer" and made it sound like an original song. In another live performance titled "Tubular Bells / God / Running Up That Hill (Greek Theatre, Los Angeles CA 7/23/14)", she mixed excerpts of "Tubular Bells" and Kate Bush's "Running Up that Hill" with her own song "God". BTW, she did a cover of Jimi Hendrix' "If 6 Was 9" (which was only included in a special edition of a maxi-single) in which she played her piano via a Marshall-amp. Out of the clips you find on youtube, the one titled "6 tori 9" seems to be the only one featuring the original studio version.
One of the most amazing concerts I ever saw was Tori at our symphony hall in SLC. It was her with a piano on one side and a harpsichord on the other. 2 hours of her playing her heart out. Then she had Trent Resnor come out and play guitar for her on a couple of songs.
I feel lucky to have seen her perform most of this album without a band in 96 our so. She was so powerful on her own. I saw her about 7 times after that, but IMO the best parts of those shows were always those where for one or two songs she took the stage alone. I'm glad she is still finding new audiences.
tori is a masterclass in composing, singing, and playing piano. As such, she recruited masterful musicians to play with her, steve caton, and jon evans are great, and matt chamberlain is a legendary session drummer. love to see anyone discovring tori, do it, go down the rabbit hole.
Matt Chamberlain is a brilliant session drummer!! Tori knows how to pick a drummer. She currently has Ash Soan playing on tour with her. So much of her music is improv and she’s always cuing the band with hand movements, it’s incredible to watch the interaction between all the band members. Her live concerts sound just like the recordings and she has the voice of an Angel!!!
This was very cool to see - Tori was definitely my number 1 musical obsession in the 90s (you can see there's still a female voice and piano focus to everything I like now).
I discovered Tori’s music through a Rick Beato video a year ago and it literally changed my entire life as a musician and general..human being. I LOVE that THIS was your first introduction to her stuff. Like. Baptism by fire 🔥! Check out any live version of “The Waitress” from the 90’s too. She does this cool middle eight, and ends on a really interesting. Really strong..vocal technique? I’m truly not sure what I’d call it. Hopefully you check it out and find the right video where she does that ending. And definitely listen to her first record. Her second record. Third. And so on. Like. Start at the beginning. When you can. It’s worth it. Also, brilliant insight regarding Muse and the idea that M.B took a little inspiration from Tori Amos. I’ve been listening to Muse since they were still playing small venue’s (In Canada at least) and never heard anybody mention anything about them and Tori Amos. But you’re totally right! Lots of Radiohead. And maybe more than a sprinkle of Tori. Take care and thanks for the video! Really enjoyed your excitement re: the incredible musicianship of everyone in that lineup. I’m a huge soundscaping nerd (I’m a musician and studio owner/producer/engineer) and hearing what her first producer did with orchestral arrangements on her first record, moving through to her second producer on her (Third?) whom she ended up marrying, totally blew me away. When an artist has a good ear, they’ll do exactly what Tori and her guys have done in this example. Soundscaping and building tension is SO important. It gets lost at times. I think she was heavily involved in the production of her third record. It’s a masterpiece. Anyways, thanks again! She still tours with that bassist! Brilliant 👏 And a quick apology for the insanely long comment. Music is my whole world and sometimes I just can’t say what I’m trying to say and express in short form. It takes the sincerity out of it. Again, take care!
Don't forget John Evans on the Bass! He's brilliant! On the same performance, "The Waitress"check out the interplay between Matt and John, Amazing!! One of my favorite songs is "Liquid Diamonds" Live!!!❤
Thank you so much for this. I’m so happy to see younger people like yourself appreciate Tori. I have listened to her since I was a tween and have seen her live 10 times throughout my life. This particular tour I had to miss unfortunately so, (this is my favorite Tori era 😩) My intro to Tori was the Crucify music video. I was instantly obsessed. Absolutely love her and she’s def one of the biggest influences on my own music. Great video!
Yes hand signals, similar to jazz musicians when there's a lot of improv, which is what she was doing (many of her live performances are nothing like the studio recording, which is amazing)
Tori is a magnificent musician and vocalist. There's so much to explore in each and every performance. Thanks for showing that she does stand the test of time!
Was lucky enough to see Tori live when she toured Australia back in 2007, in support of the American Doll Posse album. Can't remember whether she played Precious Things during her performance but this certainly ranks among my favourites from Tori's back catalogue. You just mentioning that you were 7 years of age in 1998 Wave just makes me feel old lol. I was 19.✌❤🤘
Man, you really nailed it. Especially your appreciation of the drummer. I'm going to see her in 3 weeks at RedRocks and I'm almost looking forward as much to see her drummer as her.
next to the late, great John Bonham, Matt Chamberlain is my favorite drummer. he's played with many other well known artists and bands like Fiona Apple, Pearl Jam, David Bowie, and Elton John. I love Tori. she was on fire during those 98 and 99 tours. you should definitely check out iieee and Waitress from the same set.
9:07 Yeah… hand signals. They improved a TON live and would go on loops of chorus or verses until Tori felt it was right to move on. Then she’d signal to go on or end the song so they could all follow along.
I saw Tori 4 times. Going from the Little Earthquakes tour at the Riverside (Grotty but cool venue in Newcastle, UK) to the Choirgirl Hotel in the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall. Somewhere between Boys for Pele and Choirgirl Hotel, she lost her love for what she was doing. Up until then, she'd been communicative, flirty and cheeky with the audience, but that last gig, no interaction, a face like thunder and a very clear vibe she didn't want to be there. It was heartbreaking for me but, it turns out, she was touring with a broken heart. I would've gone to see her subsequently but no album after Pele felt... real.
You should hear God and The Waitress (check the lyrics 😃). And if you like this dark side of Amos, check the album From The Choirgirl Hotel. Such a gem. And how I love how she plays all her songs on a Bösendorfer piano. That sound ...... damn.
Tori live can be iffy to a new listener. Sometimes she goes off on 20 minute side trip while singing, and if you don't know and love the original, you might not get the "extended" version. But seriously, do yourself a favor, and listen to as much Tori as you can.
I made my (ex) husband go with me to see her in 1995 or 1996, I was so obsessed with her. We walked out of the venue, and he said to me, "If she lived 300 years ago, they would've burned her at the stake." I think he felt a little threatened by her aggressive honesty, but not in a hateful way. He just didn't know what to do with it. I think he also felt a little threatened by how deeply I related to her. I don't know what it's like to be a guy catching a glimpse of roiling anger that simmers inside a woman, but it seemed to unnerve him. That's okay, though. It gave him something to think about.
Unfortunately Tori lost the 'spark' after To Venus and Back. Scarlets Walk was good, yeah.. but lacking. I've been a mega fan since the 80s (Y Kant Tori Read). Nothing over the last decade or more has been great... the past, though, is classic.
Mr. Wave Potter im not sure if I want to kill you (figuratively) or hug you. As pointed out by other commenters, Ms. Amos is a super genius. It is very concerning that you are just now discovering her. It is concerning that you cut away to comment on drums or guitar. Dude, I’m a drummer. I agree with you 100%. But you miss the point completely and it’s sacrilege. Please continue to introduce Tori to your audience. Forgive yourself do penance. Commune maybe with Joni and Nina. But for goodness sake please. Just please get a clue. And okay-hug.
I have never seen anyone NOT get Tori as much as you just did. You talked over her singing so many times. I think you completely missed the lyrics and therefore the meaning of the song
No. Let's not gatekeep. Considering Tori's unique relationship with English vowels and her cryptic lyrics, wouldn't it make more sense to let someone fall in love with her gorgeous sonic landscapes--which she's equally proud of--and discover her lyrics in their own time?

Brilliant 👏
And a quick apology for the insanely long comment. Music is my whole world and sometimes I just can’t say what I’m trying to say and express in short form. It takes the sincerity out of it.
Again, take care!
Fan for life here. Tori is just amazing. You can’t deny it.
Ive been a tori fan since 93! Seen her live. Am now 41! Shes absolutely amazing!
Absolutely adore Tori!!! ❤❤ The best
3:58 Song is from ´92.
Yeah, but the performance was from '98.
@@Wungolioth correct, but listen to him talk and it seems he's assuming it's from 98.
I never thought about Muse being inspired by Tori, but yeah, I can hear it!
This is my favourite version of Precious Things ever!
I was 19.✌❤🤘
Glad you enjoyed it! I was 38, haha!
Man, you really nailed it. Especially your appreciation of the drummer. I'm going to see her in 3 weeks at RedRocks and I'm almost looking forward as much to see her drummer as her.
Totally in a class of her own. 💛
next to the late, great John Bonham, Matt Chamberlain is my favorite drummer. he's played with many other well known artists and bands like Fiona Apple, Pearl Jam, David Bowie, and Elton John. I love Tori. she was on fire during those 98 and 99 tours. you should definitely check out iieee and Waitress from the same set.
She’s brilliant. I was 7 when it came out and I can confirm it was mesmerizing then, and it still is now.
She’s a force of nature live. You must see her in the next tour.
"Winter" Live at Montreaux is an unbelievable performance! Arguably her best.
9:07 Yeah… hand signals. They improved a TON live and would go on loops of chorus or verses until Tori felt it was right to move on. Then she’d signal to go on or end the song so they could all follow along.
Brilliant artist, great performance ❤
Please watch her tour with Alanis Morissette called, “5 1/2 Weeks”
It’s genuinely life-changing
I would've gone to see her subsequently but no album after Pele felt... real.
Love your react!! Tori is. well.. she´s unique! Saludos desde Buenos Aires
MATT CHAMBERLAIN is a monster session/live drummer
One hell of an introduction to Tori Amos! iieee please from the this same concert.
!
welcome to the Tori Amos universe
100% hand signals. Seen her so many times. She plays every song live by feel in the moment and signals her band where to go.
Matt Chamberlain on drums
You should hear God and The Waitress (check the lyrics 😃). And if you like this dark side of Amos, check the album From The Choirgirl Hotel. Such a gem. And how I love how she plays all her songs on a Bösendorfer piano. That sound ...... damn.
Regina picked up where pre-2002 Tori left off.
Matt Chamberland on drums
Please I beg of you to react to The Waitress from this show. It’s incredible and such a jam session. I’ve seen Tori live over 50 times
Blood Roses from Tori (live) is a must 😎😎
I saw her last night here in St. Louis. She did Blood Roses. Someone uploaded a video if you're interested. Amazing show
Tori live can be iffy to a new listener. Sometimes she goes off on 20 minute side trip while singing, and if you don't know and love the original, you might not get the "extended" version. But seriously, do yourself a favor, and listen to as much Tori as you can.
My adolescence soundtrack ✌️
Drummer is Jimmy Chamberlain. Pumpkins drummer. Probably the greatest.
Matt Chamberlain, not Jimmy.
React to bouncing off clouds by Tori Amos if u enjoy drums! Lol
Watch The Waitress from this same session
Using an ebow on the guitar 👍🏻😎
The nine inch nail was for a reason
Predates Regina by 2 decades
Unfortunately Tori lost the 'spark' after To Venus and Back. Scarlets Walk was good, yeah.. but lacking. I've been a mega fan since the 80s (Y Kant Tori Read). Nothing over the last decade or more has been great... the past, though, is classic.
I agree 😢
@eleanor4759 yup... and I don't know why Toriphiles deny it. So lackluster.
It's not just her sound - her lyrics are brutal.
Ha! Now tell us peeps of tori's about swift...
Yeah, she’s a badass. Also, I read somewhere that Trent Reznor wrote “Piggy” about her
🏳🌈
I have never seen anyone NOT get Tori as much as you just did. You talked over her singing so many times. I think you completely missed the lyrics and therefore the meaning of the song
No. Let's not gatekeep. Considering Tori's unique relationship with English vowels and her cryptic lyrics, wouldn't it make more sense to let someone fall in love with her gorgeous sonic landscapes--which she's equally proud of--and discover her lyrics in their own time?
Please do some research
You step all over the meaning and magic of the song with your breaks and commentary. Okay. It's about the production to you. You missed the rest.
Something very terrible has happened to the character of this story. A more referent tone is required, Wave Potter.
Good to know. I should give it another listen!
