I knew a couple who looked house poor from the outside. The house looked like a run-down dump. Imagine my surprise when I walked inside and found a beautifully decorated home with expensive furniture. They did it on purpose to discourage burglars.
Its probably not even burglars; also has tax benefits in countries where your house tax is based on its worth; most of the time they tax it from the outside (even using google maps sometimes) ;)
I kind of do this. I live in a rougher neighborhood, so I intentionally keep my yard/exterior a little worse than my neighbors, to discourage standing out, and theft. I also dress way down 99% of the time. I'm higher net worth, with no debt and a long paid off mortgage, but none of my neighbors have a clue.

When I retired, I let myself go a bit. I was just so happy not having to dress up everyday. So one day I’m sitting at the bus stop and an obvious homeless person sits down next to me and, figuring I just hit town, let me know where I could score some food and where the Salvation Army was located.
I have traveled all over the world and I have always dressed down with no frills clothes and no watches or jewelry. The most expensive item I carry is my Samsung smartphone S22. Looking like a bum has always kept me safe and also being polite to people has actually saved my life.
I remember as a kid when i was on holiday to a camping and i saw this homeless looking man going through some garbage. I was telling my dad ''why is that guy going through the garbage'' and he said, that's the owner of the camping, he is looking for discarded bottles. And i was like, he is the owner? But he looks like a bum! And my dad said, rich people do not necessarily look like in the movies in expensive suits etc. He had an old ass bicycle too, probably found during trashday. And i was also like, why bottles? And again, my dad said, he just wanted to exchange them for money. It blew my mind, why a rich person, who owns a camping already worth a couple of million dollars, would do such a thing. But i know now, this is how they got rich, by getting money in everyway possible, not spending it on BS and appreciate every penny.

I stopped my truck, opened the door, looked down and saw a whole (fairly large) pile of penny's on the ground... Like somebody just emptied a container of penney's on the ground that they didn't want. There were a couple of hundred penney's there. I was happy to pick those up and put them in my penney container when I got home.
I had a nice young woman offer to pay for my groceries the other day. I was dressed in my worst clothes. Couldn't take her money, but I also didn't have the heart to tell her I had just come from mowing grass at one of my rental properties.

I did an experiment 40+ years ago on how I was dressed and whether I received attention. What you said is true. On a related note, I knew a family that (I knew) had become quite wealthy from a business that served average people. They continued to live in an average house, etc., so as to be relatable to their customers. Very smart.
When I was young I went to a Benz dealer and no one paid attention (sloppy clothing) until a well suited salesman started to talk to me. I liked him so much that for the next 30 years I would get say 14 new Benzs for me and my wife. A real gentleman and friend until his passing.
@@Calipicker I had a big mindset shit after a work injury and divorce at age 24, I decided I never want to be poor again and every paycheck I got from then I saved/budgeted/invested >50% when possible and lived way below my means (until now). Basically just as the video is teaching, ignoring the Jonses, increase income, decrease expenses, budget budget save save invest patience patience... From age 24 - 32 now (and ongoing). Obviously have fun too like restaurants and holidays but within a budget / allocate it / be intentional and also no debt whatsoever besides home.
I love going into places not looking like I do well. The salesperson that ends up helping makes some money and is usually the most genuine out of the bunch. Then they become my regular go-to.
Just yesterday I was in a bank to address some account matters with a banker. In the next cubicle (not much privacy) was a guy I had encountered earlier in the waiting area, dressed in tshirt, sweat pants and house slippers. He was discussing allocation of his million dollars.

Well done! I have been of the same mind set for most of my working life. Retired early, still dress poor, drive an old car (I always buy used) and am debt free. It takes time, patience and self discipline.
I have one life to live, and one time to make a first impression. Dressing well makes you feel better. You don’t have to spend money on name brand expensive items, but wearing great clothes that are tailored to your body is a nonnegotiable for me.
Agreed. In a former life I assisted a wardrobe stylist and learned how to spot and select quality garments, shop on a budget, and put together good looking outfits. I am in a different line of work now and typically prefer jeans and t shirts, but know how to clean up when needed. Recently attended a conference and committed to looking SHARP anytime I left my hotel. New suits, everything pressed all the time, shoes on point and fragrance game dialed in. Felt like a million bucks, made numerous contacts, got a new job offer. People were buying my drinks, treating me like royalty. I prefer to look nice, because it makes me FEEL nice and then people treat me nice.
As a sailor, I can say some of the wealthiest people at the yacht club wear ratty clothes covered in epoxy and varnish stains. The credit card millionaires are the dressed up ones. The less you have the more you care what others think.

I went to BMW dealership with my wife about 7 years ago. We were just looking around for new car. We dressed casual with t-shirts , jeans , sneakers , you know nothing fancy. Not a single sale person came out and greet us or ask us if we were interest in buying new car. Even though we could pay cash for the new car. We decided to spend our money some where else. Just last month my wife was looking for new luxury purse. The sale lady didn't even bother to acknowledge her present. I told her dont spend money where they don't want you.
People are not going to take you more seriously than you take yourself. Sales is really cut throat. I work in sales and have friends that have done luxury sales... they are trained to handle the most long-term highest paying potential clients first. It's not just about the money it's about who you're going to bring to the dealership and what asset your relationship is to the dealership.

Black shoes, black slacks, crisp collared shirt is a good route at minimum. Brand doesn't necessarily matter depending on your goals in the dealership. Just look clean. Luxury salespeople are paid well and taught their time is expensive because of that, don't waste it on people that don't take it seriously. Louis Vuitton and rolex are low tier in terms of luxury brands. And that guy that tipped you $60,000? That was probably the equivalent of him purchasing a $15 coffee from Starbucks for most middle-class people. He could do it, so he did it. I know someone who sold luxury cars and was literally gifted two cars valued at $500,000. It was nothing for his Boss to do that, literally a tax write off. His Boss wears probably 10 lbs of gold jewelry daily, simply because he feels like it. You think he wants to do business with idiots who treat him like crap because of his outfits? Nope. Not dressing appropriately at an event is not "people treating you badly." You are allowed to dress inappropriately and they are allowed to respond to it. They were right as you weren't serious buyers and we're literally just window-shopping anyways. It's not a public park, or a casual coffee shop, it's a luxury business.. one of a couple of places you should probably look well at when visiting. Also there's a sales practice in which luxury businesses purposely act like you don't deserve to shop there or have their products. Like Birkin Hermes. BMW doesn't even do that.

Unfortunately, dressing nicer always seem to get a nicer response from cashiers. But the trick is to dress "nicer" with cheap products. People who look poor become invisible, which may work if one is trying to avoid being robbed. I drive a 2000 Ford Taurus. The next door house used to have pricey cars in the driveway, and the cars have been broken into more than once. I leave my car doors unlocked, and it has never been bothered. Nothing in there to steal anyway. Thieves go where the money is as a rule. Homeless will go wherever there is spare change.
I think an older car can lower risk but doesn't eliminate it. I know of a dirty cheap car parked at a Bart station that had its window broken a dozen times. By the time it's done, no radio, no nothing inside.

My husband does this and he sometimes looks so bad, I refuse to walk with him until he changes to something a bit better. He is older. When you are older, it looks like No one is taking care of him. 🤣 I see elderly people looking so unkempt and smelly, all the time. 🤦🏻♀️

I was followed around in the men's department of the Nordstrom's store in Seattle because I was dressed poorly. The irony was, I was attempting to pick out a silk tie for an event I was attending the coming weekend - to wear with a $1000 suit. I should have reported the very snooty "sales lady" - who failed to make a sale in this case - to management for her prejudiced attitude and rude behavior. But weakly, I simply left the store, canceled my Nordstrom credit card, and have never gone back since.
Oh yeah, if you look poor, sales people will harass you, even in walmart - it doesn't really bother me. I do enjoy watching their mouths drop when I buy a bunch or something nice and expensive lol
It's true, sometimes people feel bad for you, other times people look down on you. It depends who you're dealing with. But people will treat you based on how they perceive you.
I have served several communities with 8 figure homes. It's amazing how many times I think I am delivering to the gardener or caretaker only to discover no, that's the owner! A lot of them dress poor, even at home.

I've been doing this for years I used to dress really fancy and how I feel all the latest Versace clothes that since the pandemic I've been literally wearing t-shirt and some loose-fitting pants and purposely try to look "normal" or "poor" and it's been a night and day difference in the way people treat you and the deals you get I prefer my new look now because things are cheaper and people financially under estimate you. I can't believe how much money I've saved, little do they know I'm a low-key millionaire.

In the prepper community it’s called Grey Man or dressing to blend in and not stand out. Yes, they are talking about this and also not shopping with a huge cart load of stuff. During the pandemic when everything was closed and people were not able to work, I saw a brand new "G Wagon" type of SUV thing at the gas station. It had dealer tags and was so conspicuous. My boyfriend is a car guy and said it was a special edition costing over 200K. I realized, there is no way I would drive a car like that at this point in time when everyone is out of work, it seemed so dangerous and just asking for a mugging or worse.
That's because few have concealed carry licenses in California. I live in a small town in Tennessee and while I was sitting down to my morning cortado at the coffee shop literally two people came in with open carry pistols on their hip. No robberies or muggings going on in that small town.
Good advice here! i grew up in a rough neighborhood and carried the same mindset most of my life. It can help you on your day to day but also if you ever go travelling you don't want to mark yourself as a potential victim in a foreign country where you don't have any rights and don't know the language or culture/corruption dynamic. Watches and jewelry are pretty vulgar anyway. Stealth wealth, my man :) And yes, if you ever get contractors involved in your business, make sure to garage your cars!
By doing things like that, you're nailing it right that way. After all, it's about how much we make and we keep rather than how much we are spending and absolutely about our capacity to spend. Living below our means is the best way to keep things simple.
In the South Bay, when I see someone dressed in a white T-shirt, jeans, and a fleece jacket, I honestly assume they probably have a 7-figure net worth, minimum. 😅 I think it’s less dressing rich vs. poor and more about dressing like you’re trying to project wealth or not, which is almost a whole meta-layer on top of this. Nothing makes a person look more financially successful than looking crisp and clean, but effortlessly relaxed.

Yup. I worked in a hotel. You cannot assume someone's wealth by how they dress. Especially here in rural Minnesota. The richest guy in my county lives in a smallish house that sorely needs painting. I used to think he was nuts. Now I get it.
It depends on who you are and what the situation is. If you’re young and naturally attractive, you can get away with wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt anywhere. I once went to the bank like that with unkempt hair and I’m a small middle-aged woman on the plump side and they acted like I didn’t exist and treated me in a condescending manner. I get treated much better if I’m dressed well with well-groomed hair and makeup on, even at the grocery stores.
True, at the same time, it's more about grooming and hygiene. I wear walmart clothes, Time n True because they're good quality with good stitching - meaning slaves aren't making them. Look at how well-made the clothes are. It's thinner material some of it, but it wears well and is stylish. Nice hair, makeup and good shoes go a long way

I used to stay in homeless shelters in San Francisco. It got to be tough sometimes because I would go get free clothing once a month but if I got nice stuff I would get harrassed by other homeless folks. Its very hard to dress for a job interview when you are in that environment day after day.
Yeah. I'm not homeless, but I keep my interview clothes strictly for that purpose, or the occasional unfortunate court case. You know, if you don't have "court clothes," that's when someone will sue you.

One time I got off a sailboat at a small festival. I had no shoes or shirt on because I was in mariner mode. The festival was coming to a close, but I was hungry so I approached some food stands and asked if they had any food left. I got so much free food that night! Brisket sandwiches and shit! Had a long layover today at SFO and went into the city. Made the mistake of getting off at the civic center and wished I’d looked poor. I feel bad for them, but there’s so many people on the streets in SF that are just completely out of their mind.
One area where it often is advantageous to dress up is business networking meetings, especially if you are selling something. People notice what you are wearing, what car you are driving, how you carry yourself, etc. I guess they think if you look successful, you are successful? I am not sure. But people do appear to be more interested in talking to you if you look successful.
When i was working in a manufacturing company years back, i saw that one of the vendors had come in a big new costly car for the first time. Now the purchase department person who had very good personal relations with this vendor whispered to him about NOT to bring his new car next time at the company and suggested him to come in his old rotten car. Reason he gave was that when employees of billing department would see his new car during lunch break etc, than they would form an impression that this vendor is very rich and we can keep his bills pending. But if they see the rotten old car than chances of bill clearance early are high.
There is a kind of cliche about the well-dressed rich-looking folks who get this prompt service at whatever the higher-end department, car showroom or fancy restaurant. Having worked at a car dealership I can suggest it's not what people think it is. The salespeople aren't somehow all enamored and bestowing great respect 'because they look rich and high status'. No no. As one of the more successful salesmen told us (and showed us) what happens is that they recognize a man who wants to have a little 'wealth battle' and show off money and power. That is their SWEETEST MARK and our sales guy could win an academy aware because he'd instantly transform into a 'money showoff' and materialistic type to engage the potential Rolex-wearing buyer. 20 minutes later the Money-shower is gonna show him he could by the RX7 if he wanted, easy! 30 minutes later he's going to get all the upgrades AND a vanity plate. A designer handbag saleslady described the same phenom with rich showy women who came in to look at those 30K handbags. They recognize an easy 'Mark', a big upsale by playing on their need to show off wealth. This is why all the sales staff rushes to the prickish big business guru looking guy in the rolex and $1000 dollar dress shoes (or whatever the wealthy show) because that is their most promising sale and thus commission etc. It's not because they are plebs who see a money-man and get a 'fandom' and must believe that man or that designer dress wearing lady are soooo big and important. well, that's what I've gathered so far.
I once wore a Rolex watch and dressed nicely with jacket and my girl friend dressed nicely too and went to wrigley field chicago and I got some shady looks to the point I had to leave the place immediately.

Sacramento midtown has crime. My clean but older car kept getting broken into. So I let it get dirty and let the paper clutter and fast food containers fill up the inside of my car. No one ever broke into my car again! Also- when parked at Safeway, no one parks near my dirty car with trash all over…so I have plenty of room to get in and out! Unintended bonus! 😂
Biggest mistake anyone can make is "Try to" look rich. If you need to take out a loan to look rich, you're doing it wrong. It is sad that people feel the need to "Impress" other people. It is far more important to live a life that you can be proud of and feel financially comfortable. I've been investing for 6-7 years now and it feels nice knowing that I am one more step closer to financial freedom. and not needing to worry about what am I going to do for food next week.
That's nice! I guess, we can't do anything about it, but just let them live their lives. There really are people who don't care about what the future holds for them, just at least be thankful you're one of those who thinks ahead than anyone else. I don't understand this. Alot of people I know who are now rich had to dress better and look put-together in order to get the right job (or relationship ect) and be amongst actual rich people. They bought a couple designer pieces and took how they look seriously and it paid off very well for them. And no, they didn't go into debt to do this. Playing the part and marketing yourself to get to where you want to be is really important and alot of times necessary. Imagine walking into a store and not having to deal with someone following you because they think you're so poor you're going to steal something....You can literally walk into a store and people will assume you're important because of how you carry yourself and how you're dressed and you will be offered opportunities no one else has. Jobs/deals/ relationships ect. Rich people know that your time is more valuable than your money ...you're not going to look cheap valuing your money or time! I know from experience that if you have money and you live around other people that do, nobody asks you for anything. If you look put-together and you are in a poor area, people are way more likely to bother you. You don't even have to look rich you just have to look healthy/ put together. If your middle-class friends are angry that you're doing well, you need new friends. You don't need to appear poor. I don't know any actual wealthy people who are concerned about what poor people are going to try to take from them, they don't care how they look to you. What they actually care about is how they're perceived by other rich people ....people that aren't going to take form them and actually can ADD to their life in assets/ value/ opportunities/ connections/resources.
It doesn't have to be about impressing people. There exist individuals that appreciate good design, quality fabrics and the thought it takes to put a cohesive outfit together. Doesn't have to be emblazoned in brand names or particularly expensive but a person liking and valuing aesthetics shouldn't be demonized. In fact, iirc looking at things one finds pleasing to the eye - a painting, a shoe, an outfit, things you like to look at give one a serotonin boost - there's that.
I think pretty tactically like this when i go out as a petite woman. Im 5' 1", 120lbs soaking wet living in the greater new Orleans area. Women with long hair are much greater targets statically, so I keep my hair short. I wear plain, dark comfortable clothes, never flash too much skin, and i never wear shoes I can't run in. I also wear ball caps a lot when im running errands. And i always look men in the eye. I go to some effort to make sure i don't look like a victim, and try to stay as nondescript as possible. Better to be a little paranoid than dead or worse.
Wow I didn't know women with longer hair were targeted more. Subconsciously whenever I am in unsafe environments I do this kind of behavior though. Like if I'm walking on a trail alone I make sure to dress as ugly as possible and appear bigger than I am

I'm not rich by no means. Just a 75 year old average Joe who goes anywhere at any time. Wear t-shirts and shorts all the time weather permitting. And I'm physically fit so people see me they don't bother to mess with me.
I live in a neighborhood where the wealth ranges from $5M-100Ms and the vast majority dress in old dirt stained jeans tshirt and old fleece jacket. Since we don't live in an area were getting robbed is highly unlikely, it's by choice, rather than necessity. The 6', a muscular 235lbs, and my life has given me a meaner look... so I'm not likely to get accusted no matter what I'm wearing.
I don't like people thinking I'll steal but I love getting discounts at the secondhand store, normal stores don't really give discounts. Getting a $5 top for $2, originally $40, bargain!

Yes I completely understand. I do not wear expensive jewelry to the gas station or certain places. I grew up in a place with a lot of crime so if you had nice sneakers or a nice phone they were gonna get snatched.
I recently lost my Benchmark white gold wedding band somewhere IN THE HOUSE (not in the garbage or sink) after eating a messy Chik-fil-A sandwich that my wife brought me home for dinner and removing it to wash my hands, for God's sake. It didn't magically re-appear to date in over 4 months. Cost me $1200 to replace it this week. That was one expensive chicken sandwich. F.

These kinds of topics are so nuanced and complex, my mother grew up poor but she was always elegant...a chanel suit looked cheap on HER...she commanded a room when she stepped into it...she was like grace kelly...class and beauty emanated from her. But she was poor (her kids became rich so we gave her all the houses and expensive things she wants now), and had to save for a bottle of chanel 19...you would never know it though. Then there are people like bill gates, who are rich but are such trash human being he might as well be a poor brained person.
Bonus is my 20 year old truck has never been broken into. BTW, I bought it with the down payment in credit card points and 0% interest, and then made a living with it for 15 years, while writing off the cost as a business expense (landscaper). Now that I have made my money I have a part time 'fun' job and still drive my truck which has been well maintained. Those who condemn me for having an 'old' vehicle are typically ones who get a new car every 5 years as "the payments are the same"...they also live in rentals or over-mortgaged shacks while I have paid for acreage :)

i would add to stick a BlueTooth tracker into your decoy wallet.. so that way once the robber throws it away .. probably a block or two away.. you can go fetch and re-use it? I read a book called "Urban Cyclist Handbook". And one of the most valuable tips I found in it is how to apply urban camouflage to the bicycle.. something that would make it look not very expensive and even look run down without actually being that way.. to keep potential bicycle thieves from having an interest in this bicycle. They used duct tape and other things applied to it.. while it retains full factory functionality.. and the camouflage can be removed at later point without damage to the bicycle

We were fortunate enough to find houses we could afford in two farly affluent neighborhoods. In our first neighborhood I learned we paid what I called the "(neighborhood) tax" because anyone coming in to do any work there automatically added a minimum 15%. I told one guy I knew his kid was in college and while I didn't mind buying the books I wasn't about to pay for the entire 1st semester by myself, then told him he had to do better on the price. I never had anyone push back.
Many years ago when I first immigrated to the USA, I would get followed by people on the stores, that’s probably why I don’t like to go to stores. It doesn’t happen anymore, it must have been my white cotton shirt that I used to wear 😅. Now I Do what you do, basically dress according to what Im going to do. I was in a rough part of town once, and someone asked if I could give him some money. I happened to have a significant amount of cash on me at the time, but I was dressing poor. I just asked "Do I look like I have any money?" He looked me over and offered to buy me breakfast.
I just bought a smart watch. First luxury item. But I'm not using it as much as I thought I would. And I realize that wearing it at sketchy places is a terrible idea. So I may end up selling it.

I'm not a millionaire but I could buy pretty much whatever car I want short of maybe an exotic sports car. I've got a few, but my favorite - is my early 90's Chevy single cab pickup with paint faded to rust and primer. Unless I have a client meeting I'm driving that. If I do have to meet a client I have a modest 20 year old SUV that's pretty clean.
When I wear fancy clothes I carry and conceal aka (I have a gun on me). But when I dress casual I'm usually in a hurry, running errands and etc! But it depends on the situation. Also just using common sense and being aware of your surroundings and you will be fine!
I just dress poor all the time. I grew up poor, and I'm not materialistic at all. I did however work at Tesla, and naturally was a huge fan of the company and wanted to partake in their products. My "uniform" is the same 10 tees, and shorts for summer and pants for winter. One of the few things i stuck with from the book "goodbye things". That being said, it sucks you feel you gotta do this stuff. I go to "bad" neighborhoods ALL the time and never feel concerned for my safety. My coworkers go to the extremes of feeding their seatbelts through the door handles.
Just recently my house keys were stolen at Fountain Valley Hospital while I was having a port removed. Of all places a hospital when you're the most vulnerable.

I knew a couple who looked house poor from the outside. The house looked like a run-down dump. Imagine my surprise when I walked inside and found a beautifully decorated home with expensive furniture. They did it on purpose to discourage burglars.

I kind of do this. I live in a rougher neighborhood, so I intentionally keep my yard/exterior a little worse than my neighbors, to discourage standing out, and theft. I also dress way down 99% of the time. I'm higher net worth, with no debt and a long paid off mortgage, but none of my neighbors have a clue.

I have traveled all over the world and I have always dressed down with no frills clothes and no watches or jewelry. The most expensive item I carry is my Samsung smartphone S22. Looking like a bum has always kept me safe and also being polite to people has actually saved my life.

But he looks like a bum! And my dad said, rich people do not necessarily look like in the movies in expensive suits etc. He had an old ass bicycle too, probably found during trashday. And i was also like, why bottles? And again, my dad said, he just wanted to exchange them for money.
It blew my mind, why a rich person, who owns a camping already worth a couple of million dollars, would do such a thing. But i know now, this is how they got rich, by getting money in everyway possible, not spending it on BS and appreciate every penny.

I did an experiment 40+ years ago on how I was dressed and whether I received attention. What you said is true. On a related note, I knew a family that (I knew) had become quite wealthy from a business that served average people. They continued to live in an average house, etc., so as to be relatable to their customers. Very smart.
When I was young I went to a Benz dealer and no one paid attention (sloppy clothing) until a well suited salesman started to talk to me. I liked him so much that for the next 30 years I would get say 14 new Benzs for me and my wife. A real gentleman and friend until his passing.

@@Calipicker I had a big mindset shit after a work injury and divorce at age 24, I decided I never want to be poor again and every paycheck I got from then I saved/budgeted/invested >50% when possible and lived way below my means (until now). Basically just as the video is teaching, ignoring the Jonses, increase income, decrease expenses, budget budget save save invest patience patience... From age 24 - 32 now (and ongoing). Obviously have fun too like restaurants and holidays but within a budget / allocate it / be intentional and also no debt whatsoever besides home.

I love going into places not looking like I do well. The salesperson that ends up helping makes some money and is usually the most genuine out of the bunch. Then they become my regular go-to.
Just yesterday I was in a bank to address some account matters with a banker. In the next cubicle (not much privacy) was a guy I had encountered earlier in the waiting area, dressed in tshirt, sweat pants and house slippers. He was discussing allocation of his million dollars.

Agreed. In a former life I assisted a wardrobe stylist and learned how to spot and select quality garments, shop on a budget, and put together good looking outfits. I am in a different line of work now and typically prefer jeans and t shirts, but know how to clean up when needed. Recently attended a conference and committed to looking SHARP anytime I left my hotel. New suits, everything pressed all the time, shoes on point and fragrance game dialed in. Felt like a million bucks, made numerous contacts, got a new job offer. People were buying my drinks, treating me like royalty. I prefer to look nice, because it makes me FEEL nice and then people treat me nice.

I went to BMW dealership with my wife about 7 years ago. We were just looking around for new car. We dressed casual with t-shirts , jeans , sneakers , you know nothing fancy. Not a single sale person came out and greet us or ask us if we were interest in buying new car. Even though we could pay cash for the new car. We decided to spend our money some where else. Just last month my wife was looking for new luxury purse. The sale lady didn't even bother to acknowledge her present. I told her dont spend money where they don't want you.
People are not going to take you more seriously than you take yourself. Sales is really cut throat.
I work in sales and have friends that have done luxury sales... they are trained to handle the most long-term highest paying potential clients first. It's not just about the money it's about who you're going to bring to the dealership and what asset your relationship is to the dealership.

Um. You should dress for what you want, if you're in a BMW dealership..It's traditional to wear a relaxed but, well tailored garments. Black shoes, black slacks, crisp collared shirt is a good route at minimum. Brand doesn't necessarily matter depending on your goals in the dealership. Just look clean. Luxury salespeople are paid well and taught their time is expensive because of that, don't waste it on people that don't take it seriously. Louis Vuitton and rolex are low tier in terms of luxury brands. And that guy that tipped you $60,000? That was probably the equivalent of him purchasing a $15 coffee from Starbucks for most middle-class people. He could do it, so he did it. I know someone who sold luxury cars and was literally gifted two cars valued at $500,000. It was nothing for his Boss to do that, literally a tax write off. His Boss wears probably 10 lbs of gold jewelry daily, simply because he feels like it. You think he wants to do business with idiots who treat him like crap because of his outfits? Nope. Not dressing appropriately at an event is not "people treating you badly." You are allowed to dress inappropriately and they are allowed to respond to it. They were right as you weren't serious buyers and we're literally just window-shopping anyways. It's not a public park, or a casual coffee shop, it's a luxury business.. one of a couple of places you should probably look well at when visiting. Also there's a sales practice in which luxury businesses purposely act like you don't deserve to shop there or have their products. Like Birkin Hermes. BMW doesn't even do that.

Unfortunately, dressing nicer always seem to get a nicer response from cashiers. But the trick is to dress "nicer" with cheap products. People who look poor become invisible, which may work if one is trying to avoid being robbed. I drive a 2000 Ford Taurus. The next door house used to have pricey cars in the driveway, and the cars have been broken into more than once. I leave my car doors unlocked, and it has never been bothered. Nothing in there to steal anyway. Thieves go where the money is as a rule. Homeless will go wherever there is spare change.
I think an older car can lower risk but doesn't eliminate it. I know of a dirty cheap car parked at a Bart station that had its window broken a dozen times. By the time it's done, no radio, no nothing inside.

I was followed around in the men's department of the Nordstrom's store in Seattle because I was dressed poorly. The irony was, I was attempting to pick out a silk tie for an event I was attending the coming weekend - to wear with a $1000 suit. I should have reported the very snooty "sales lady" - who failed to make a sale in this case - to management for her prejudiced attitude and rude behavior. But weakly, I simply left the store, canceled my Nordstrom credit card, and have never gone back since.

I've been doing this for years I used to dress really fancy and how I feel all the latest Versace clothes that since the pandemic I've been literally wearing t-shirt and some loose-fitting pants and purposely try to look "normal" or "poor" and it's been a night and day difference in the way people treat you and the deals you get I prefer my new look now because things are cheaper and people financially under estimate you. I can't believe how much money I've saved, little do they know I'm a low-key millionaire.

During the pandemic when everything was closed and people were not able to work, I saw a brand new "G Wagon" type of SUV thing at the gas station. It had dealer tags and was so conspicuous. My boyfriend is a car guy and said it was a special edition costing over 200K. I realized, there is no way I would drive a car like that at this point in time when everyone is out of work, it seemed so dangerous and just asking for a mugging or worse.
If you have expensive things, you also need to hire a bodyguard.
That's because few have concealed carry licenses in California. I live in a small town in Tennessee and while I was sitting down to my morning cortado at the coffee shop literally two people came in with open carry pistols on their hip. No robberies or muggings going on in that small town.

It can help you on your day to day but also if you ever go travelling you don't want to mark yourself as a potential victim in a foreign country where you don't have any rights and don't know the language or culture/corruption dynamic. Watches and jewelry are pretty vulgar anyway. Stealth wealth, my man :) And yes, if you ever get contractors involved in your business, make sure to garage your cars!

Yup. I worked in a hotel. You cannot assume someone's wealth by how they dress. Especially here in rural Minnesota. The richest guy in my county lives in a smallish house that sorely needs painting. I used to think he was nuts. Now I get it.
It depends on who you are and what the situation is. If you’re young and naturally attractive, you can get away with wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt anywhere. I once went to the bank like that with unkempt hair and I’m a small middle-aged woman on the plump side and they acted like I didn’t exist and treated me in a condescending manner. I get treated much better if I’m dressed well with well-groomed hair and makeup on, even at the grocery stores.

I used to stay in homeless shelters in San Francisco. It got to be tough sometimes because I would go get free clothing once a month but if I got nice stuff I would get harrassed by other homeless folks. Its very hard to dress for a job interview when you are in that environment day after day.

Oh, I won't wear anything stained because I think people think I can't eat lunch without spilling stuff on myself. It's tough to keep stuff unstained until it's worn out. That's my preferred poor look.
One time I got off a sailboat at a small festival. I had no shoes or shirt on because I was in mariner mode. The festival was coming to a close, but I was hungry so I approached some food stands and asked if they had any food left. I got so much free food that night! Brisket sandwiches and shit! I’m sure they thought I was homeless, 🤣
Had a long layover today at SFO and went into the city. Made the mistake of getting off at the civic center and wished I’d looked poor. I feel bad for them, but there’s so many people on the streets in SF that are just completely out of their mind.
One area where it often is advantageous to dress up is business networking meetings, especially if you are selling something. People notice what you are wearing, what car you are driving, how you carry yourself, etc. I guess they think if you look successful, you are successful? I am not sure. But people do appear to be more interested in talking to you if you look successful.

When i was working in a manufacturing company years back, i saw that one of the vendors had come in a big new costly car for the first time. Now the purchase department person who had very good personal relations with this vendor whispered to him about NOT to bring his new car next time at the company and suggested him to come in his old rotten car.
Reason he gave was that when employees of billing department would see his new car during lunch break etc, than they would form an impression that this vendor is very rich and we can keep his bills pending. But if they see the rotten old car than chances of bill clearance early are high.
There is a kind of cliche about the well-dressed rich-looking folks who get this prompt service at whatever the higher-end department, car showroom or fancy restaurant. Having worked at a car dealership I can suggest it's not what people think it is. The salespeople aren't somehow all enamored and bestowing great respect 'because they look rich and high status'. No no. As one of the more successful salesmen told us (and showed us) what happens is that they recognize a man who wants to have a little 'wealth battle' and show off money and power. That is their SWEETEST MARK and our sales guy could win an academy aware because he'd instantly transform into a 'money showoff' and materialistic type to engage the potential Rolex-wearing buyer. 20 minutes later the Money-shower is gonna show him he could by the RX7 if he wanted, easy! 30 minutes later he's going to get all the upgrades AND a vanity plate.
A designer handbag saleslady described the same phenom with rich showy women who came in to look at those 30K handbags. They recognize an easy 'Mark', a big upsale by playing on their need to show off wealth. This is why all the sales staff rushes to the prickish big business guru looking guy in the rolex and $1000 dollar dress shoes (or whatever the wealthy show) because that is their most promising sale and thus commission etc. It's not because they are plebs who see a money-man and get a 'fandom' and must believe that man or that designer dress wearing lady are soooo big and important. well, that's what I've gathered so far.
That makes a lot of sense to me. Underestimating people's intelligence is a common mistake.
I once wore a Rolex watch and dressed nicely with jacket and my girl friend dressed nicely too and went to wrigley field chicago and I got some shady looks to the point I had to leave the place immediately.

Sacramento midtown has crime. My clean but older car kept getting broken into. So I let it get dirty and let the paper clutter and fast food containers fill up the inside of my car. No one ever broke into my car again! Also- when parked at Safeway, no one parks near my dirty car with trash all over…so I have plenty of room to get in and out! Unintended bonus! 😂

Biggest mistake anyone can make is "Try to" look rich. If you need to take out a loan to look rich, you're doing it wrong. It is sad that people feel the need to "Impress" other people.
It is far more important to live a life that you can be proud of and feel financially comfortable. I've been investing for 6-7 years now and it feels nice knowing that I am one more step closer to financial freedom. and not needing to worry about what am I going to do for food next week.

That's nice! I guess, we can't do anything about it, but just let them live their lives. There really are people who don't care about what the future holds for them, just at least be thankful you're one of those who thinks ahead than anyone else. I can really tell you're gonna have a brighter years ahead of you for consistently investing 😊
I don't understand this. Alot of people I know who are now rich had to dress better and look put-together in order to get the right job (or relationship ect) and be amongst actual rich people. They bought a couple designer pieces and took how they look seriously and it paid off very well for them. And no, they didn't go into debt to do this. Playing the part and marketing yourself to get to where you want to be is really important and alot of times necessary.
Imagine walking into a store and not having to deal with someone following you because they think you're so poor you're going to steal something....You can literally walk into a store and people will assume you're important because of how you carry yourself and how you're dressed and you will be offered opportunities no one else has. Jobs/deals/ relationships ect. Rich people know that your time is more valuable than your money ...you're not going to look cheap valuing your money or time!
I know from experience that if you have money and you live around other people that do, nobody asks you for anything. If you look put-together and you are in a poor area, people are way more likely to bother you. You don't even have to look rich you just have to look healthy/ put together.
If your middle-class friends are angry that you're doing well, you need new friends. You don't need to appear poor.
I don't know any actual wealthy people who are concerned about what poor people are going to try to take from them, they don't care how they look to you. What they actually care about is how they're perceived by other rich people ....people that aren't going to take form them and actually can ADD to their life in assets/ value/ opportunities/ connections/resources.
@@BeatTheBush I think it is human nature, the urge to compete is in most people. And it is good in some ways, but bad in others.
It doesn't have to be about impressing people. There exist individuals that appreciate good design, quality fabrics and the thought it takes to put a cohesive outfit together. Doesn't have to be emblazoned in brand names or particularly expensive but a person liking and valuing aesthetics shouldn't be demonized. In fact, iirc looking at things one finds pleasing to the eye - a painting, a shoe, an outfit, things you like to look at give one a serotonin boost - there's that.
I think pretty tactically like this when i go out as a petite woman. Im 5' 1", 120lbs soaking wet living in the greater new Orleans area. Women with long hair are much greater targets statically, so I keep my hair short. I wear plain, dark comfortable clothes, never flash too much skin, and i never wear shoes I can't run in. I also wear ball caps a lot when im running errands. And i always look men in the eye. I go to some effort to make sure i don't look like a victim, and try to stay as nondescript as possible. Better to be a little paranoid than dead or worse.
The shoes I can run in applies to no matter how I dress. I'm a tallish woman so no one thinks anything of it.
Gotta keep your femininity low if you're by yourself around sketch places.

Wow I didn't know women with longer hair were targeted more. Subconsciously whenever I am in unsafe environments I do this kind of behavior though. Like if I'm walking on a trail alone I make sure to dress as ugly as possible and appear bigger than I am

I'm not rich by no means. Just a 75 year old average Joe who goes anywhere at any time. Wear t-shirts and shorts all the time weather permitting. And I'm physically fit so people see me they don't bother to mess with me.

I live in a neighborhood where the wealth ranges from $5M-100Ms and the vast majority dress in old dirt stained jeans tshirt and old fleece jacket. Since we don't live in an area were getting robbed is highly unlikely, it's by choice, rather than necessity. The 6', a muscular 235lbs, and my life has given me a meaner look... so I'm not likely to get accusted no matter what I'm wearing.

Yes I completely understand. I do not wear expensive jewelry to the gas station or certain places. I grew up in a place with a lot of crime so if you had nice sneakers or a nice phone they were gonna get snatched.

I recently lost my Benchmark white gold wedding band somewhere IN THE HOUSE (not in the garbage or sink) after eating a messy Chik-fil-A sandwich that my wife brought me home for dinner and removing it to wash my hands, for God's sake. It didn't magically re-appear to date in over 4 months. Cost me $1200 to replace it this week. That was one expensive chicken sandwich. F.

These kinds of topics are so nuanced and complex, my mother grew up poor but she was always elegant...a chanel suit looked cheap on HER...she commanded a room when she stepped into it...she was like grace kelly...class and beauty emanated from her. But she was poor (her kids became rich so we gave her all the houses and expensive things she wants now), and had to save for a bottle of chanel 19...you would never know it though. Then there are people like bill gates, who are rich but are such trash human being he might as well be a poor brained person.
This is why I will hold onto my old car until the wheels fall off. Not trying to do anything to attract attention from the wrong folks.
Bonus is my 20 year old truck has never been broken into. BTW, I bought it with the down payment in credit card points and 0% interest, and then made a living with it for 15 years, while writing off the cost as a business expense (landscaper). Now that I have made my money I have a part time 'fun' job and still drive my truck which has been well maintained. Those who condemn me for having an 'old' vehicle are typically ones who get a new car every 5 years as "the payments are the same"...they also live in rentals or over-mortgaged shacks while I have paid for acreage :)

i would add to stick a BlueTooth tracker into your decoy wallet.. so that way once the robber throws it away .. probably a block or two away.. you can go fetch and re-use it?
I read a book called "Urban Cyclist Handbook". And one of the most valuable tips I found in it is how to apply urban camouflage to the bicycle.. something that would make it look not very expensive and even look run down without actually being that way.. to keep potential bicycle thieves from having an interest in this bicycle. They used duct tape and other things applied to it.. while it retains full factory functionality.. and the camouflage can be removed at later point without damage to the bicycle

Great video! Logos on shirts can be so tricky ... I buy all my clothes in thrift stores and I can't tell you how many times someone has come up to me and said ... "cool you went to XYZ (univeristy)" ... haha. Plain colors are good!
We were fortunate enough to find houses we could afford in two farly affluent neighborhoods. In our first neighborhood I learned we paid what I called the "(neighborhood) tax" because anyone coming in to do any work there automatically added a minimum 15%. I told one guy I knew his kid was in college and while I didn't mind buying the books I wasn't about to pay for the entire 1st semester by myself, then told him he had to do better on the price. I never had anyone push back.

Many years ago when I first immigrated to the USA, I would get followed by people on the stores, that’s probably why I don’t like to go to stores. It doesn’t happen anymore, it must have been my white cotton shirt that I used to wear 😅. Now I Do what you do, basically dress according to what Im going to do. Don’t forget to drink coffee if you need high energy before an important conversation!!!

I was in a rough part of town once, and someone asked if I could give him some money. I happened to have a significant amount of cash on me at the time, but I was dressing poor. I just asked "Do I look like I have any money?" He looked me over and offered to buy me breakfast.

I'm not a millionaire but I could buy pretty much whatever car I want short of maybe an exotic sports car. I've got a few, but my favorite - is my early 90's Chevy single cab pickup with paint faded to rust and primer. Unless I have a client meeting I'm driving that. If I do have to meet a client I have a modest 20 year old SUV that's pretty clean.
When I wear fancy clothes I carry and conceal aka (I have a gun on me). But when I dress casual I'm usually in a hurry, running errands and etc! But it depends on the situation. Also just using common sense and being aware of your surroundings and you will be fine!

I just dress poor all the time. I grew up poor, and I'm not materialistic at all. I did however work at Tesla, and naturally was a huge fan of the company and wanted to partake in their products. I get so many worried looks when I walk to my car looking like an unwashed hobo that then turn to confused looks when the door knob allows me into the car 😆

My "uniform" is the same 10 tees, and shorts for summer and pants for winter. One of the few things i stuck with from the book "goodbye things". That being said, it sucks you feel you gotta do this stuff. I go to "bad" neighborhoods ALL the time and never feel concerned for my safety. My coworkers go to the extremes of feeding their seatbelts through the door handles.

Just recently my house keys were stolen at Fountain Valley Hospital while I was having a port removed. Of all places a hospital when you're the most vulnerable.

Just carry (legally in your state) a Sig-Sauer P365 9mm in your waistband holster. Ten round capacity with another round in the pipe and standard night sites right out of the box. No big whoop.
I like the idea of the decoy wallet for public transit or going out on walks in sketchy areas. I think wearing Hi Vis vests also helps deter muggings.
