      @@WIZA327 Hollywood says sweat pants + hoodie = drug dealer, so you must've had some money and/or drugs on you. Not really, but you know how dumb criminals can be sometimes? The mugger might've settled for the phone. 1, you can't get blood out of a turnip and 2, leaving a man naked could attract too much attention. More risk, like $100+ in fines and other legal costs, and for what, $20 reward if the local consignment shop is generous?? The cheap/worn jeans and T-shirt concept is tried and true, though. I can vouch for that.

      Absolutely wrong. A lot of “poor clothes” is cotton/ polyester based, which is ok. Truly comfortable clothing is ELS cotton, merino wool, cashmere, silk, etc. Theres a noticeable differs you’ll enjoy when wearing these. You spend most of your life wearing clothes.

    I've noticed that people treat you different depending on the clothes you wear (cheap vs expensive). I like to wear or look poor because I can see clearly who are the genuine people versus the plastic people.
    I walked in my real estate agent office looking poor and asked to see the manager. The person asked me if I had an appointment. I replied "no". She said to come back and make an appointment. I said it will only be for a brief moment. She said "the manager is in a meeting." I said "I'll wait." She said "The manager is very busy and not sure when the meeting will finish. You can check our website online, book appointments, fill in forms for rent, auctions, etc..." So I stood there thinking for a moment in silence... She said "are you looking to rent, all the details online are very easy to follow." I replied... "No... I'm the landlord."... I counted, 3mins the manager came to see me.

      Imagine if you were the manager or boss and met with every single small fish coming in the door and answered every phone call. You’d never get stuff done. That’s her job - to screen calls and visitors. If you aren’t forthcoming about who you are, why should you expect him to make time to see you? You make time for family, not every person in the world. That doesn’t mean you’re a bad person for favoring your family. In business, clients are your family.

    • @yookyungchang1518
      @yookyungchang1518 6 років тому +51

      @@zarnoffa That is true but in this case, Jane Smith is referring to how the receptionist assumed who she was based on her look. This mistake could be easily avoided if the receptionist just asked who she was before judging what she was there for based on her look. Of course the manager can't see everyone, but asking doesn't seem too hard or too time consuming.

    This reminds me of a fun story my great uncle told me. He was a very decorated combat flyer in WW2 but never wanted to talk about the war and was very humble in
    general.
    Right after the war he went to college.
    He said although by then he was sick of the military that he went ahead anyway and signed up for ROTC.
    Apparently it offered some sort of additional credit.
    First day of training he showed up in a sweat suit instead of whatever he was supposed to be wearing.
    The person in charge, himself only a student thoroughly chewed out my uncle for 5 minutes as to what a disgrace he was and from now on he had better show up in proper uniform.
    My uncle didn’t say a word.
    Next day may uncle showed up in his real full USAAF uniform complete with Captains bars, medals, combat ribbons, everything.
    Upon seeing my uncle in full uniform, the hot shot in charge there turned pale and went silent.
    After that I think everyone left my uncle pretty much alone.

      one thing I learned from being fairly poor is that new clothes are so so much better, especially throwaway items such as white t's, underwear, shirts, pants, shoes. These things are considered consumebales as they lose good smell, looks rugged. That's one of the main thing I would splurge on if I made good money. But when it comes to things such as cars, I'd go with something like a Camry.

    My mom, who grew up in a blew collar family in post WWII France, always said "Neatness and cleanliness are the only luxury the poor have". She could take simple furniture and cheap yards of fabric and make a home out of that. Or look put together with a few simple items of supermarket clothing. She never allowed any member of the family to go out with holes in their clothes. We would sit down on week-ends and she would teach me how to mend clothes. Today, our family is more affluent, but I always kept that philosophy. I find it offensive to suggest that poor people are automatically dirty and sloppy. Wearing jeans with holes in them is something the rich do (and they will pay a ridiculous amount of money to buy jeans that have been distressed for them). If I see someone wearing a worn shirt from a technology trade show and torn jeans, I will assume that it is some rich guy on his way to Lowe's to buy supplies for a week-end project on his half a million dollar home.

      I respect your high standards. At the same rate, I think there's something to be said for appealing to stereotypes if you live in a rough area. I've personally experienced the difference between looking stereotypically well-off VS stereaotypically poor n a few areas I've lived in. Enough to know that I feel like looking my best, but it tends to attract gold diggers and/or criminals. Enough to know that when I dress down, I tend to attract more down to Earth, friendly and genuine types of people. Problem is, I've out grown my lust for gold-diggers, I prefer honest people, I don't want to be compelled to defend myself against criminals again, but I also prefer nicer clothes, and either type of outfit tends to cost about the same. It's a catch-22. Fortunately, I got used to dressing down to some extent when/where necessary, found a place to live that I like, and the most crime we get here tends to be bike thieves, shoplifters, pedophile creepers (still a significant issue, but likely not for long if a recently busted local pedo cop gets ousted), casual drug users who don't usually bother anybody but themselves and their buddies, and telephone tough guys who don't do much except spread rumors and make threats they never seem to follow through on. I'm guessing you live in an area you at least perceive to be safe?

You have to fake it, until you make it. Once you get rich, you can then kick back, and look as poor as you want, because by then, it won't matter.

I don’t think it’s okay for women, especially women of color, to dress down in some instances because people feel like they can mistreat, abuse, and verbally attack an unkempt woman. The only negative I see is individuals thinking that I am wealthy and stuck up ( I’m on my way to being wealthy through savings and investments though.)

Now that I have enough money, I don’t care what other people think, so I buy 7 pairs of the exact same sweat pants and T-shirts in bulk during black friday sales and wear them until they disintegrate.

If you want great treatment at luxury stores or restaurants dress the part. If you want to be left alone, dress that part too. But I think the best default is jeans and a shirt (plain solid colors). Although, when visiting some stores I've had security follow me around; if I'm in the mood and they're annoying me I'll walk fast, run, or sometimes even hide if the environment allows it - I'd never steal anything, just giving them what they want, which is to make their job a bit exciting.

    My boyfriend did this when we traveled to Italy in March. I dressed like I normally do (not super nice, but not ratty either). Beggars followed me around asking for money, but they took one look at my boyfriend and didn't pay any attention to him. I may need to try this if we travel outside the country again. Saying no to beggars in other countries always makes me feel bad, especially when I travel to Peru. :\ My parents grew up in poverty in Peru, so it hits a bit too close to home.
    By the way, my boyfriend and I also apply this strategy to choosing which car to drive to certain places. We both bought our cars cheap with cash, but his car definitely looks nicer than mine. He has a 2004 350z, and I have a 2003 Accord that looks rather plain (also has a few minor dents and scratches on the bumper from the previous owner). Whenever we drive downtown or to other sketchy areas, we take my car because there's much less of a chance that someone will break into my car.

    I also learned to LOOK at how others are dressed. Rich people often dress down (even sometimes on dates!), but if you look at them closely you can see they're rich. And, yes, you can also spot people like I used to be: those of good taste and seemingly fine clothes who are really dirt poor.

      Predators go after the prey. Simple as that... It works whether the predator is a hungry cat picking among the mice, the lion choosing among gazelle in a herd, or a mugger picking out the right target in a crowd on the street...
      The cat tries for the fatter slower moving mouse... He won't chase the dog for food, because that pit-bull will just hand him his ass.
      The lion will choose a slower, easier gazelle that still offers meat. They don't usually even go after hippos because they're so dangerous... Like the cat vs dog, the hippos have a far better chance of handing even a group of lions their collective ass.
      The mugger measures folks on the street, by their clothes, the things they carry, and by their posture, body language, stride... SO wearing shabby clothes, and behaving like a rich kid "slummin' " in the bad part of town is an easy way to get killed. Moping along like the rest of the "used up" masses while in decent, but not particularly good clothes tends to work better...
      In either direction (finance to motif) dress too pretentiously and you risk being caught at it. So the "dressing down" helps, but only so much. Sooner or later, you may have to return to your car, and the only high-dollar car in the city is definitely still going to bite you in the metaphoric ass. :o)

My whole life it was never a problem, until I moved to London, and some shop owners started acting like I might steal something. I was even asked to leave one shop one time because I took a few minutes to decide what I wanted to buy. Another shop owner said, "you know, you don't have to come here every day." I have a work uniform I got for free that I wear every day to work, and I don't even own a cell phone.

    Definitely works while car shopping. Never go shopping for a new car driving a really nice car. Drive a beater and dress shabby then they are more likely to take a lowball offer. If you have any kids dress them shabby, and get them dirty, don't feed them breakfast, and take with. Then they will start whining about being hungry during the deal.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому +22

      Huh... there are lots of way to annoy the sales person to hurry the deal up and give you a lower price. I just hope they do away with this and sell cars like they do with potato chips, fixed price like Tesla.

    • @TheWyoCoyote
      @TheWyoCoyote 7 років тому +11

      I was kidding about the dirty kids, and more thinking about individual sellers. At a dealership once they run you credit application they know what you can afford. I just bought a brand new 2017 4Runner, and sold my wife's old Mini Van. It had 245K on it and needed some things to boot. I was asking $1000 for it. A woman answered the add and came out. She was a divorced single mom with three kids. Driving a beat up truck with worn out tires. She drove the van liked it and handed me $1000. I took it, but I would have given it to her for 500 if she had countered, or even free, because In my mind she is probably broke, but who knows she may be loaded. Dressing down and looking less well off can definitely play a part in deal making I think. It plays on human emotion. Not always but sometimes.

      So true, other thing is, complain about how bad you have it. Tell em your sick and you really don't want a car, but though you might look around. This will do a few things for you, one they will think you really are too poor to buy and leave you alone in the lot. 2 when you go to buy and negotiate they will give you a better deal cause they think your broke and sick and see your poor clothes and feel bad for you. I did this before for my car saved 4k from Toyota 3 year old car. Mind you already marked down 10k from original sticker price, with 27000 miles. I got a great deal because I did as I just told you, gotta make the feel bad for you. It works!

    So here's a story my dad told me once. He was working at a shipyard and in this case they were at an exhibition trying to sell a yacht.
    He saw some poorly dressed guy go up to the their competition and he was flat-out turned down. He wasn't even allowed on the boat.
    He than came to them and was shown the boat. He then left and when he came back a bit later, bought the thing in cash.
    That'll teach you to judge people by their looks :P

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому

      This happens a lot it seems. And what's surprising is that this is pretty typical. People judge others by how they look. As a sales, it's understandable because they are trying to optimize their time so that they get the most sales for their effort. Hence they try to not spend any that appears to not bring them sales. So they really need to figure out if some dude in rage really has money to spend or not.

Due to the downturn in the job market and the redundancies that are rife at the moment in the North East, many families have had to pull together at this time of financial uncertainty On that note, an easy solution for anyone with an expensive car to hide, is to sell the car and buy a bicycle. :)

    I can only agree with you to a certain degree. In the prepping field there is the Grey Man - where you want to completely blend in to your surroundings and not call any attention to yourself. As for mugging I think if you are aware of the situation and environment where you are in that will not happen, walking with confidence and a powerful body language helps. I have dressed in T shits and jeans for years but since I started upping my style with classic clothing I get more respect and get better treatment form everyone. If you are a minority like me it makes an even bigger difference. First impressions are make very quickly and can take a long time to change. If you are single it seems that the time when you just finished the oil change on your car and you just go out to the store for some bottled water or something you will run in to that old high school cheerleader and you will get asked how are you doing? With the "Are you living under a bridge" kind of look. I think dressing poor has only a very few times when you should do it, I think it has a downgrading effect on your self confidence. Just my thoughts. Keep the videos coming.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  7 років тому +2

      You see, dressing up is for one purpose, dressing down is for another. Sure you can use confidence and powerful body language to deter mugging but dressing down is also another way to do it.
      So when you dress down, don't expect to make new friends easily and you might just run into someone you know, lol. So it's not for doing all the time but for specific circumstances like shopping in peace or theft deterrent while vacationing. I think if you are financially independent, the confidence comes from that and easily overcomes looking raggedy.

      Back when I didn't have a Costco membership, when I had a craving for a Costco hotdog I'd piggyback off a customer as a guest. But not this one time. I approached a woman in the parking lot and she quickly, fearful kept walking without talking to me like I was trying to recruit her for my cult or I was begging for money. I forgot I had my oversized ragged hoodie on and hadn't shaved a few days. Mission failed.

    When I was young an old farmer from my church gave me a job working on his farm, shoveling horse poop, feeding the chickens and and weeding his huge garden. I liked him he let me drive his beat up old pickup on the farm doing chores. One day we were driving to the feed store and the old truck was overheating.
    we pulled into the local garage and the mechanic told him the bad news that the engine needed to be rebuilt.
    We walked down the street to a restaurant named the breakfast place and had the hotcake special. then we walked to an auto dealership showroom and was looking at the new trucks. A young man in a nice suit and tie came out and gave us the brush off cause he had on an old pair of farmer jeans a tee shirt and a straw hot. We walked back to the mechanics place and he told the mechanic to rebuild the engine. I told my daddy about what happened and he just started laughing. My dad told me that the old man owned a strip of land 660 yards deep the length of a road that was 7 miles between two junctions on a local highway. You would never have guessed that in a million years

    Let me tell you my story going along with this topic.
    I have been looking to get roofing estimates on my properties (I own 2 houses, 1 of them is an investment property by a ski resort). I would like to put on metal roofs because of icing here in Maine, had a lot of problems over the winter with ice damming.
    I have had several roofers come out and look at my primary residence roof to write up an estimate. I've noticed that if I dress poor looking and not let on that I have 2 beautiful houses that I am looking to have metal roofs put on. That they will offer me discounts and tell me about special promotions. For instance, I asked 1 guy if he also serviced the area where my other house is.. he unfortunately would not drive that far (over 2 hrs from here). He ended up not offering me any special deals or any good pricing.. he was over $5,000 more than any of the other 6 estimates I got!!
    Since I am only 22 this helps me as well, people assume a 22 yr old would not have money.. so I get offered deals a lot more often if I just let them assume.

    • @BeatTheBush

      It's a sad reality and I see you understand why this is important. But then again... 6 samples isn't enough to justify the effects. The pricing people give on home repair estimates vary so wildly, it's crazy.

    You can extend this further to change the appearance of your nationality. I read an account of a Polish woman in Nazi-occupied Poland who had no ID papers. She traveled by changing her nationality. Going through a Polish checkpoint, she was openly Polish. But when she came to a German checkpoint, she switched to her fluent German and became German. Doing that, she was able to do without papers. Of course it also helped that she was young and pretty.
    Traveling, it often helps to look local to blend in and not be hassled as a tourist. Dress like they dress. Act like they act. I don't do what tourists do, i.e. stare at things and look lost.

    I dress down as a woman to deter attention from men. I wear baggy clothes, and look a bit sloppy on purpose. That way I have less chance of being picked up for sex trafficking, walk confidently etc. And of course, yes there are certain occasions for dressing up, or down. Love the camera in a beat up bag idea!

      From my own experiences, it’s the opposite. When I dressed sloppy, I tended to attract low-quality men because people do judge others. It’s like, they already judge you that you have very low-self esteem, and so on. That’s why dressing down may not help. In my case, those guys thought I was an easy target and I was so desperate. Dressing up always safe us from those creepy guys. Always dress your best, ladies!

    I wonder about your thoughts on this: I am from UK but I went to San Fran, near to the airport suburbs and as I was walking past a gas station, a car I presumed was letting me cross, so I waved to say thank you. He just got annoyed and did the shoo wave to get me to go as if I was asking for money or something. I thought it was pretty rude.

      Many Californians are rude, especially when driving. There is a heavy narcissistic spirit in California. Next time, go to Texas... much friendlier people!

    I own a small business and some times will act like an employee and get tips... it’s a little game for me to break up the monotony

      Lol... not a problem to be a waiter I assume? But then I guess you could just let it run and do something else?

      BeatTheBush nah, I own a carpet cleaning business. Some people just assume every business is big and think everyone who works in their home is an employee... when they come across that way I just roll with it and take the tips I get

      Yeah... I guess I would assume so as well. Since you are doing the manual labor part of it. But if it's a one man band then you would still do your own cleaning.

    I totally agree. If youre successful dress super humble and if your family or friends ask you hows life...always say its going terrible and that you have all of these bills and that youre in massive debt (this way they dont ask you for money). And if they ask you, well how did you buy that suit...say Goodwill. and if they say "Yeah right" you say Im for real...not goodwill from the Hood...Goodwill from the rich neighborhoods.

      Hummmm I guess this depends if you really want to hide your money from friends or family. If they know you well enough it's sort of hard to hide.

      Sure if you have wads of cash just laying around in your house of course. My family wont know whats in my wallet nor bank account unless I tell them which I wont. If you have assets you can easily fabricate a story saying you got it off Ebay for dirt cheap or auction. Why would you want to splurg money to your friends unless you have self security issues. I always say those that show off are the ones who have the least.

    My dad was offered clothing from a Chinese man when he went to buy tiles from a tile store because he had a torn shirt on and wore torn pants. The Chinese man thought my dad was a homeless dude haha

    Great way of thinking about how to dress! My husband and I run a mobile clothes bank where we give clothes away for free to low income areas, and homeless shelters in the winter. We are lower income ourselves, both being on disability, but have nice clothes because of the clothes bank. We have found that in certain areas we go into, we dress down quite a bit, so that the people we serve will feel more comfortable to come talk to us, and know they can relate to us, and us to them….and we can. We definitely know what it’s like to be in lack, but thankfully, now we have plenty, and a way to share it!
