  • Being frugal allowed me to retire much quicker than normal but it's not about pinching every penny there is. One huge general idea that I naturally gravitated towards was not to buy into high-end luxury brands. While sometimes, they can appreciate in value, much of the products will not earn you money by owning them. Overall, the lower the desire for material things, the faster you can quit the rat race.

Owning more expensive items will lead you to worry about how to protect them from others who try to take them from you. More worries lead to more health problems. Live simply and sleep very well at night with no worries/stress.

I started out on my own at 15, living off $0.20 top ramen every day, freezing in the winter, no hot water. I worked hard, believing that money was the score by which the game is played and won. Now, I'm a multimillionaire (doesn't mean much anymore). What I found is having luxury clothes are an empty reward, watches, shoes... not of that really means anything. Now, I buy work shirts from walmart, basic jeans... decent boots. My cars are used, because in the end, it doesn't matter. BTB is on the path to self actualization. He figured it out before me (same age). Having a big house and the money... by all metrics of the system, I've won. But, I don't feel like it. Now, I just feel like cashing my chips, buying a house 1/10th the size, living simply, eating simply, that might be a more fulfilling life.

Whoa... on your own at 15? That's insane. There is a certain allure to tiny homes, less to clean. If I live to actually sefl-actualise, I think I might glow. Hope to get there.

@@BeatTheBush Not by choice, they just up and left the state. I knew getting sucked into the foster system would be its own kind of hell. So nothing to do but finish school and work at night at the grocery store until I could join the army. Typical American family.
I think a house in Cozumel sounds pretty nice. Skin diving for lunch ever morning. Small two bedroom house on the island does not cost much. Having loads of 'things' is not the answer. Its like winning the maze just find out the cheese is plastic.
It'll take time to find a good balance, if its even possible. Also, I don't think you should feel bad about what others consider as rules of how you should live. If you want a Kobe steak once in a while, there's no reason to feel guilty about that just because someone thinks you should live a specific way. These channels, how you live, I have a feeling its just your personal path to finding out what you really want.

Only times you should strive for more is in workout routine, weight lifting, self-improvement, books read, knowledge gained, skills attained. That's it. Material things are not hard to come by at all. I drive a $1,400 20 year old car. I used to drive a $36,000 Challenger. I sold it to help pay off all my debt. Housing is affordable. If you're willing to be satisfied with a small house or apartment. My expenses currently do not exceed $1,500 a month. You can get a job at Walmart for $16 an hour. No skills. People are just making excuses if they can't afford to cover their bills. Excellent points in this video! Highly needed in America today!

Second, if you never splurged on wonderful meals or a nice car, wouldn't that show a love of money over life experiences? Sharing an amazing expensive meal with someone close to you creats a beautiful life experience that has far more value than money! I always evaluate personal comfort, personal enjoyment, time savings, and savings in the long run when choosing more high quality items. For example, why buy a 6 year water heater vs a 12 year and almost certainly paying all the installation charges 2x vs 1 when the price difference is actually relatively small. Why replace a tv that goes out with a new 55” TV in a large room if an 86” TV only costs $500-800 more over 5-10 years and would bring much more enjoyment if you watch a lot of TV or movies for entertainment. A lot of people spend money on nice things because they enjoy the unique experiences, like to collect certain things, or have a generous personality - NOT because they're trying to keep up with the Joneses. It may appear to be the latter, but that's a generalization of people that have a wide range of human motivations.
