Seeing that Kaoru scene really made me remember how Kiryu's romance with her was like 10 times better than with Yumi

It was simply more fleshed out, because he had time to actually bond with her for story reasons.
Yumi, on the other hand, happened mostly off-screen between Y0 and Y1, and was mostly meant to serve as a little story background for Kiryu. It also couldn't develop further, because of 10 years in the joint, and the things that have happened later on.
