    How does pH and Magnesium get affected in this process? Does this not result in significant swings in pH?

    At what point in the 4 month cycle should I start testing & adjusting the Calcium & Alkalinity? Is it best to start immediate when you initially set up the tank? Or a few months down the road when a few fish are already living in the tank & I want to introduce coral?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 роки тому +1

      Really either way works. If it were up to us, we would start early on. Not only will this help you learn the ropes about testing and adjusting for these parameters with no livestock at risk, it'll also help coralline algae grow faster with stable alkalinity. There is a high likelihood that any adjustment you need to make will be minimal. Maybe even non-existent in the early going if you're doing water changes.

    Im a new reefer and getting the point that Alk Is dropping but calcium and mag does not. Is it ok to only dose the alk or do both asl and Cal need to be dosed ? I believe this is because my water changes are keeping the supply of Cal and Mag.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 роки тому +3

      It's fine to dose alkalinity alone if that's what your tank needs. It's always best to dose based on consumption, so it sounds like you're on the right track.

      @@BRStv thanks for the reply! Alk seems to be the only thing dropping thus far. I change 10% water every week with Marin pro reef salt so it must be replenishing enough of everything else. Thanks again.

    Do you need to do this for anemone

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 роки тому +3

      Anemones are not affected as much by calcium and alkalinity levels as they don't have a hard skeleton. In fact, they're actually invertebrates, not corals :)

    So if I have a tank that is consuming a lot of alkalinity but not much calcium and dosing 20 ml a day of both calcium and alkalinity I should up the dose to let’s say 40 ml a day to both the alkalinity and calcium rather than keeping the calcium at 20ml and raising the alkalinity dosage to 40 ml?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 роки тому

      The 1:1 recommendation is a great starting point. That said, not every tank will use a perfect 1:1 ratio of the BRS two part. If you need to dose 40 ml of alkalinity and 20 ml of calcium each day to keep your parameters stable, there is nothing wrong with that. Just be sure to look for any evidence of precipitation around your pumps and/or heaters if you can't seem to keep alkalinity up.

      @@BRStv So how d o you know when to add magnesium then? If adding different amounts than you will finish the gallons at different times and I keep hearing you say dose equal amounts of calcium and alk and after finishing both than dose mag! I am so confused. Please clarify this. I have asked several time and hate to keep bugging you guys.

    If i were to do a soft coral only tank with a couple sps or lps corals would i still need to dose?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 роки тому

      It will ultimately depend on your water change schedule/volume as well as how many corals you have in the tank. Your best bet is going to be to test for calcium and alkalinity as that will tell you when you need to start dosing for sure.

    • @lucasteeny8714
      @lucasteeny8714 3 роки тому

      @@BRStv i heard for a soft coral only tank, because i have a 15 gallon waterbox, and if you choose a good salt mix that you would not need to dose and that water changes would be good for it?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 роки тому

      @@lucasteeny8714 Potentially. You'll still want to test occasionally to make sure that your major elements like calcium and alkalinity are staying within check. Even though softies don't have a skeletal structure, there is still calcium and alkalinity consumption in softie tanks.

    Ok, but what about lowering alkalinty? how do you do that?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 роки тому +1

      You have two options. Option 1 is to stop dosing and let it fall naturally over time with the corals consuming it. Option 2 is to do water changes with a salt mix that has lower alkalinity than your tank's water .

    So confused! I thought you are suppose to add calcium and alk in equal portions and when you finish both gallons then add magnesium. You just said "when calcium drops add some and when alk drops add some" I am never going to get this right! These videos are very conflicting! When do I add the magnesium? You also say as your tank grows you will find yourself dosing more frequently. I thought 2 part was to be done daily. Okay, so you go on to talk about daily but what confuses me is If I add more of one and not the other than I wont finsh the bottles at the same time to add the magnesium and the the doses wont be even. It seems crazy to me that you add the same amount of both. My tank has never worked that way, like I have had high nitrates with low phospates before so how do these two balance out to be exactly the same dose, espially when each tank is different. I keep putting this off and today I am at 6.4 alk so have to dose! Sure hope I get it right espially confusing because my alk consumption has been crazy random and drops different amounts on different days. Some day not at all and other days as much as 0.5!

    Gotta disagree with the Hanna checker, alkalinity checking is so darn easy with just about every test kit that it really isn't that much of a time/effort savings over a test kit. Red Sea for instance, fill the vial to 10mL, drop in reagent until it changes color, then read the value on the card, which pretty much is every alkalinity test I've ever done. Now tests like the Calcium where you'd first put in reagents, then a powder and finally some drops, yeah those would be ones I'd want a little digital help, but from what I gather then Hanna Ca checker isn't quite so good.
    That said, still using kalkwasser, but man probably go through 3+ gallons a week.

    Except the hanna will give you different numbers when you test back to back.
