  • Have set up the Dutch Bucket style barrel beds as a bit of an experiment in growing some ginger.. Was planning on using 15L / 5 gal buckets but think we will get more production out of the half barrels.. Have already added in a few other quick growing plants to get a speedy harvest from these guys..

    Nice looking set up Rob. Like your drain setup...I have Ducth Buckets too with 1/4 " hoses feeding them and they do tend to get clogged on occassion. So I am going to build a spinning seive with 120 micron SS screen into my RFF. That should keep the water solid free and I will then take that water directly into my DBs. At least that is the plan. :) I will let you know how it all turns out. Jim

      Hi Jim.. Will be great to see how the sieve works for you in the RFF.. Am using some aquarium filter matting to help keep the finer solids out of the bio filter in the fish farm.. Am thinking of doing the same in the aquaponics before the bio filter as well..
      All the best to you & yours..

    I think it looks good. I can't wait to see how the ginger does. My sis had planted an ornamental ginger that naturalized in a little area, but I have never been successful with edible ginger here in FL, even in containers. I would like having it established so I can just go out and break off a bit as needed.

      This is an older clip Ronnie & got an average harvest from it. I'd say this seasons aquaponic ginger harvest will be a bout the same size if not a bit smaller due to the mishaps I've had in the system.

    Nice build Rob. From my somewhat limited experience I found that holes that small feeding the barrels will plug up in an aquaponics system unless the water is thoroughly filtered. I've seen your aquaponics set up and you do have a good filter system but it's difficult to filter out all the solids.

    Great build and the ginger's looking fantastic! If you try the dwarf fig in there, I wonder if you cut some holes in the side around the top half of the barrel if you'd be able to get an air-pruning effect to thicken up the root growth (that's worked so well on that Papaya tree), but without losing too much water...what do you think?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Brian Barth Hi Brian. Am looking at trying a few different ways to grow dwarf trees in the system but haven't ventured as far as air pruning yet. Would be a matter of trying to keep all the water in the barrel or collecting it in a tray I think. Would like to know if you come up with any ideas Mate.

    hi, mate
    love your videos.
    I left Australia a few years back, and I am very surprised to see that you now use Yankee gallons instead of British.
    the British gallon is 4.54 litres while the yankee one is only 3.78 litres.
    so it's the old 44 gallons drum that's 200 litres.
    look's like the yankees are taking over the country, that's sad.
    anyway, keep the good work mate.

      I think it's slowly moving to be the other way around as I'm seeing metric used a lot more on clips coming from the USA..

      The other beds were set up as flood & drain units to start off with where these are more a constant flow where the water falls through the media & over the plants roots..
      With the flood & drain beds they are flooded to a certain level until the siphon starts then the water is drained away into the sump for the cycle to start again.. One of the remaining beds is still set up that way but the other is a constant flow..

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  4 роки тому

      @@ricardojuvanelli2172 It is best to work out planting guides to the feed going in & you will see a few different amounts being mentioned by various folks.
      I think a safe amount would be 30-60g/m² for leafy greens & 50-100g/m² for fruiting plants.
      I would still use the nitrate test & try to work out what level of feeds will give you what amount of excess nitrate depending on the amount & type of plants you're growing & take notes for future reference.

    How well does the water spread out across the clay media? I Imagine it would drain extremely well, with the water draining near vertically? Unless the roots go near to directly under the water outlet you'd think it would be pretty dry in the top segment.... or at least until the water has cascaded out a bit wider.... I'd imagine it would be difficult to germinate seeds, but seedlings would do fine? Ginger and other rhizomes would have enough stored energy to get the roots out? I'll be watching with anticipation Rob :-) Much cheaper option than building an IBC grow bed stand, and a narrower footprint as well.

    • @RobsAquaponics

      Hey Mr Justin.. At the moment the water is cascading over the clay under the surface of the bed & spreading out to 75-100mm/3-4".. In some spots it isn't spreading as far but I'm not worried about that as the ginger roots will search the water out & will also help spread the flow around the barrel once they multiply.. You can come around to have a look if you want.. I could do with a hand cleaning out a few beds worth of clay ;-)
      The other option would be to drill holes on an angle off the pipe to spray the water out further or like bo ter berg suggested create a hoop.. Could also add a 13mm/½" "X" or "T" in the centre to spread the wet zone out.. If I was to plant a few plants like lettuce might of set it up that way..
      Cheers..

      An "x" piece in the middle would do the job too I think bo ter berg..

      I have no doubt it will work Rob. Just summing up in my mind the pro's and con's of flood and drain V the Dutch bucket. I'd be keen to come take a look, but will have baby in tow (as an excuse) si prob won't be able to work ... :-( ;-)

    Hello Rob, love your videos.
    Quick question: with the system would you get dry spots around the edges? I'd look to grow as many beets as possible for juicing. Trying to figure out the best way to grow them via hydro or Aquaponics?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Hi there..
      Sorry for the slow reply..
      I found that the beets didn't do as well in the barrels as they did in the flood & drain beds.. I think the barrels were just a bit to dry once the ginger roots took over..
      Have sprinkled a few beets through the flood & drain trays the other week.. Will be using them for juicing & salads.. Have a few that have already popped & are looking good..
      Cheers & have a great one..

    Interesting set up, Rob. Quick question. What are your temperatures for growing your ginger? All I have found so far is "warm and humid". Yeah, well, warm is subjective from one place to another. My summer was cool compared to previous years. My ginger didn't do any thing until I covered it. Thinking of going greenhouse with it next year but would like to find out about temp ranges for various plants.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Hi Jay..
      We have a summer average in the low 30's here & this spring wouldn't of been much cooler.. Might need to pop it in there green house for best results there..
      Ginger likes a soil temp between 20-30°C (68-86°F) if that helps you some..
      Cheers mate & hope all's well..

    • @10yearvet
      @10yearvet 9 років тому +1

      Helps greatly! thanks Rob. Thanks for popping in the soil temp as well. Yep. gotta go greenhouse. The last 2 years we didn't have more than 1 or 2 weeks over 30c and even that time wasn't each day in a row. Very cool and rainy.

    with one hose running across your barrel, how would you water the plants that would be growing on the outside of your watered area inside your bed? this is a larger tube than a 5 g bucket, any plants in the outer edge wouldn't get as much water, would they?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 років тому

      It would be fairly easy to set up a round feeder ring that ran around the outside of the barrel. Has I had all the plants towards the centre their roots grew into the wet zone.
      Cheers.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  3 роки тому

      I suppose it could be done. I'd suggest you grow a dwarf variety in there but would be concerned about the roots taking over after a few years.

      surenTokyo Hi There. Haven't seen anyone try to grow potatoes in rock or clay in trickle beds/barrels but am looking at trying some in coconut coir in Root Pouches at some point. Just need to get rid of the fish only system to make room for new grow beds ;) Would like to know how you go if you try it.
      Cheers & all the best.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  10 років тому

      Hey Martin.. No DWC as yet but may do soon.. One of the 2 grow beds off to the side will end up being DWC I think.. Just need to clean the clay out of the second grow bed & reposition the base.. Will have to source some foam or some other material for the raft as well but that's another issue..
      Cheers mate..

    • @Martyncuz
      @Martyncuz 10 років тому +1

      Rob Bob Great. I have just built a DWC system. I will make a video this week and post it hopefully. I made lots of rafts out of polystyrene. And after spending hours dilling all the basket holes and putting it together I found out the polystyrene I used may have been treated with a flame retardant chemical. So before connecting it to the fish tank I need to research a bit more. I've found it difficult to source a material in the UK that has absolutely no chemicals.

    Whats going on with the water in the barrels? I'm guessing it's basically just running through, while having a few inches of water in the bottom all the time?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  10 років тому +1

      That's fairly much it Uncle Bete.. Will be about 1¼-1½" in the base at all times.. Will be interesting to see what's accumulated in the base at the end of the season..

    what are the disadvantage of dutch bucket to a new to aquaponic gardener like me?..was wondering if I could make a wood frame and a pond liner 12 inches deep and 24 inches by 48 inches using this system for my 8 foot by 10 foot greenhouse. ever heard of anything like that? oh sorry off a 50 gallon barrel with goldfish in it.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Hey Zach.. Sorry for the slow reply mate..
      I think that any container over a bucket in size really isn't needed for a Dutch Bucket system.. The reason I went with the barrels for the ginger is that I wanted extra room for the roots to grow as they'd be a tad cramped in a normal bucket..
      For a bed the size you're planing & having a 50gal barrel as your tank I think a constant flow or flood & drain bed might work better for you.. The other option would be to set up a series of Dutch buckets on a bench where you're planing the grow bed..
      Hope that helps an bit & sorry again for the slow reply..
      Rob..

    Hi Rob i just started to go thru all your vlogs ... im very intressted in aquaponics and im just about to start setting one up my self.... i saw the dutch barrels and have a idea about the drip tube you have i would put it in a circle around the barrel like 10 cm from the outer edge instead of right thru it will get water more evenly distributed around the barrel... just a thought ;)

    When do you use flood and drain as opposed to when do you use the dutch bucket method?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 роки тому +1

      It all depends on your preferred method. I haven't tried the bucket grow method in any systems as of yet but would like to do so down the line for larger fruiting plants like tomatoes & cucumbers.
