    Excellent job!! I love the root pouch idea. The soil is a good addition for the "best of both worlds". It will be interesting to see how well they contain the roots of the plants that love to wander and clog things up.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      I don't think every plant will like the pouches.. I pulled a kang kong out today that wasn't doing the best & planted it directly into the new media bed.. So far all the other plants I have in them are going great guns though..
      Hope to have the pouches up & running in the new bed by the end of the week so I can take advantage of the last of the warm weather here.. Am thinking I might start off with some carrots..
      Cheers..

    Wotcha! All's looking good fella.
    A word to the wise. Some hot glue gun materials degrade when damp for an extended period so always read the label when you buy new glue sticks. I tried to make a flapper valve and it ran great for three days. As soon As I turned my back it failed and the test tank emptied In seconds, luckily no fish where involved.

      The only area that should get wet is the edge near the in flow normally (not counting the 250mm of rain we just had).. Shall keep an eye on it.. Have already put the feelers out looking for some pallet timber to cover them with ;-)

    Will you use a storyfoam frame with small net underneath to use the deep culture system to grow a bit of Duckweed/etcetra for the hens?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Have seen a few folks that have done that but don't really have the system set up to have a netted raft at the moment.. Eventually we want to have a raised pond (so the cane toads cant get into it) for frogs & other wild life & will grow the duck weed in there.. I was feeding them the azolla for a while but our small barrel of it is slowly dying for some reason..

    Nice build Rob. Got the Glass gem and Luffa yesterday. Many thanks. I've been wondering about something and have been trying to work up a list of questions for you. Thought it might be a good video for you to do if you were interested. Many questions I've come up with but just a few here. 1) Why did you choose to try aquaponics? 2) why do you choose to continue aquaponics? 3) what advantages/disadvantages dooes aquaponics have compared to traditional inground gardening and container gardening to include wicking beds? 4) Do you feel the cost and effort required for aquaponics are worth it in the long run and how long do you feel it would take to "break even" in cost if one uses it to it's full potential. 5) What circumstances do you feel others should consider in determining whether they should try aquaponics or not?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      They're a little too shallow for wicking beds Susan.. One will be used as a floating raft bed & the other is already the base of the Root Pouch bed at the back stairs..
      Not much goes to waste around here ;-)

    G'day Rob....been following all your builds for a while now and about to build a CHIFT PIST system with 1 x ibc fish tank and 2 x growbeds with 2 x sumps. Thanks for all your info...it is what has helped me to be confident enough to start a small system. One thing tho...for the LIFE of me, I cannot find the bulkheads you refer to for the stand pipes. Nothing at Bunnings ? Any help mate ? Thanks, Ray.

    I like the new setup Rob. Are using the CHOP method? What size water pump are you using? Have a great one!!!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Hey mate..
      Not using the CHOP method as I'm not a fan of it.. I like to have solids filtration so the fish don't swim in their own waste.. This is more based on the split flow methods that Paul Van & Dr Nate from Bright Agrotech have spoken about.. Is still a Constant Height In Fish Tank, Pump In Sump Tank (CHIFT PIST) but the flow from the sump is split under pressure to flow out to the beds & fish..
      This system is running on a 10,000lph/264gph pump.. The flow is great at the moment but could be a lot better if I was using PVC instead of hose..
      You getting the spring starts ready or is it still a bit to early ?
      Cheers & all the best mate..

      RobBobs Backyard Farming Thanks for the info. I am trying to get started old man winter doesn't seem to be finished with us yet. It was 70 plus degrees over the weekend. But today we are having freezing rain it supposed to be with us for the next few days. That's not normal for us in South Louisiana to have this cold weather. I am itching to get my hands dirty and get some seeds started. Oh btw I am in the process of buying some yacon rhizomes thanks to you I am learning of so many new plants that I want plant and try you have a gift to inspire people to try new things to plant and eat. When people come here and ask where I learned about everything I tell them Rob Bob.

      RobBobs Backyard Farming I sure did I got 6 rhizomes. I planted them and they are about 4 to 6 inches tall and seem to be doing well. I can't wait to give them a try. I live in Louisiana so the winters don't get too bad in our area. Now the summers are a different story we get hurricanes and temps in the high 90's and low 100's often.

      You will always get a small level of water remain in a bed with a bell siphon.
      I have a clip on the bell siphons if that helps, you would just need to scale down the components to ¾ or ½"
      ua-cam.com/video/Ia1BQFTaG7c/v-deo.html
      Most plumbing or rural supply stores should carry the ½ 7 ¾" pipe & fittings as well. 👍

    Thanks for your great videos for aquaponic builds. I have been watching your videos for quite a while and find some great info. I have decided and started a new build here in Las Vegas and ran across a couple questions. Here is a video I made of it in it's current stateua-cam.com/video/emgAWKTwHvI/v-deo.html. I need to add a filtration system to it, but wondering how I would make it work to get good filtering and ease of clean out. Does anyone have any suggestions? My original pond that I am working with is at a lower elevation than the new 55 gal barrel drum that I buried into the ground at the top of the grade. I have it running to gauge the water fill and drain process. As you see I am using an exterior auto drain siphon. This is so I can possibly get more grow space. So far, working pretty good. Any help would be great. Thanks again for your great videos.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      +Gary Helton
      HI Gary.
      One way to plumb it would be to run water from the pond into a radial flow or swirl filter at the end of the beds with the water exiting & running into the grow beds.
      Hows the build coming along now?
      Cheers,
      Rob.

    For your sludge in the bottom of grow beds have you tried worms?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Mike Man Hi Mike..
      I know a lot of folks say that worms will remove the solids/sludge but that just isn't the case unfortunately.. They produce solids waste as well & not all of that can be taken up by the plants leaving some behind.. They help but aren't the fix some claim they are..
      There are worms all through the beds here & I find them useful at breaking down old roots & other organic matter but would never recommend them as a solids removal tool..
      Here's a look at some we found less than 12 months after setting the system up, ua-cam.com/video/QeVrZwIRf6Q/v-deo.html
      Cheers mate & all the best..

    Just wanted to share an option I just used on a rainwater IBC to deter algae. I already have water in it so my options were limited. I took 48" weed cloth and double wrapped the outside of the cage. I attached the top edge with bailing wire and the bottom with drywall screws. Just wedged the top pieces between the cage and tank. Made a tight, nice looking job.

    Just re-watched this video again and paid closer attention to parts of it. Could you just fill the root bag bed the bags, lower the water level, and eliminate the amount of media needed and make it more like a wicking bed? You'd still be utilizing the aquaponics water and accomplish the same thing?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Jeff Sullivan Just saw this post too..
      That was one of the methods I'd like to try out Jeff.. Was planing to do that with the 4th grow bed I have ready to plumb up.. Planed to use the home made compost but it looks like I won't have enough this time round so will have to wait for future beds to give it a shot..
      Cheers mate..

      Hey Jason.. Haven't looked into it much.. I know folks add in muscles & worms to do the same thing..
      Are you adding them ?

    • @jasonrtz
      @jasonrtz 9 років тому +1

      Definitely worth a look Rob. Gammarus are just fresh water acclimated Rotifers. I used to keep the salt water version in the bio filters of my reef tank before I converted it to an indoor aquaponic system. Scuds or scud shrimp are other names for them. They, like red wiggler worms, will help break the solids down. I've been using worms for a while, but John Kohler did a resent video on an aquaponics walk through and that guy was using them, and like a brick to the head it hit me, "duh why didn't I think of that" :) So I just added them a few weeks ago. Both are a welcome addition in my opinion.

    I have a plastic 50 gallon, and a 320 gph pump have been told to get a sump bed and maybe a swirl tank as well. I am looking for advice on a small scale as this is going into me 8 by 10 greenhouse and space in tight- and advice will help.

    Nice work Rob.
    My concern with your idea of putting in wicking bags in the bed is that when it rains.
    You'll have the chemicals/minerals from the potting mix coming back into the AP system.
    For the most part it 'should' be ok if you only use 100% organic soil/compost.
    Just watch your pH levels as it could spike quite hard and frequently.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Sovaka Kindred Was planing to use our compost mixed with some coir so should be free of any bad chem's.. Ended up shelving the idea for now but might look at it again going into spring later in the year..

    I would have thought soil/compost in root pouches would cause problems with nutrients leaching out of the bags and into the water. Very interested to hear the outcome of your experiments though.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      David Clark Hi David.. I don't think it would be too much of an issue with home made compost but commercial mixes could pose some problems.. Most of the sediment would get filtered by the clay I think.. Didn't end up using any in the beds yet but will be come next spring hopefully..

    Hey Rob, nice looking layout! Forgive me if this has been covered in another episode and might have been changed when you put the new tanks in, but what was the reasoning for feeding the beds off the pump rather than the overflow of the fish tank? Please just point me back at a clip if it's covered elsewhere. Great looking setup!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Chris Shea Hi Chris.. Haven't covered that in other clips so you haven't missed anything ;)
      If I was relying on gravity to service the grow beds the pipe would need to be larger in size to be able to take the flow so that the tank it's feeding from didn't back up.. The pipe would also need a fairly straight run to the beds which would get in the way of some other plans I have for the system.. Having it come straight from the pump also means I have better control over the flow rates into the beds.. Hope that helps some mate & let me know if you want more info..
      I missed a load of comments on this clip so sorry for taking a while to get back to you..

    Juist wondering why your getting rid of the fish farm Rob?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Buffalo_Chips Hi there...
      I made up the fish farm after I had folks ask me if it could be done as they had room for a fish tank in basements or garages but no room for grow beds.. It also helped that a local Aquaculture professional (Paul Van from www.earthanedge.com/ ) put on a demo showing how to knock a small one up so I based 95% of this system on his.. I think I've shown that it can be done but it does need a bit of tweaking.. Posted a clip on it the other week that you might of seen by now that mentioned a few changes I'd make.. ua-cam.com/video/OfOpdxpRRaw/v-deo.html
      As I see it I'm better off using the space to grow veggies as the other 2 tanks will grow out more than enough fish for us to eat...
      Hope that helps mate..

    • @buffalo_chips9538
      @buffalo_chips9538 9 років тому +1

      I don't trust rock. I have 2 separate systems going in the basement. One with a gravel based media and one with clay only, and it seems like I can't get the PH down to a decent level on the gravel based one no matter what I do. And it's not like river gravel, where there would be different sorts mixed in. It's all one kind of gravel. I don't know. I just find it hard to source a PH neutral gravel locally, I guess. If I had the coin, I would go 100% clay. Thanks, Rob! Have a great one!

    Nice setup, although the work required to set up and maintain everything never seems to slacken!
    At about 10:40 in the clip, I notice you have a chicken, apparently free-ranging under the yellow buckets. How do you keep your chickens from tearing up the rest of your garden plantings? Have you trained your chickens to differentiate between what is intended to be your food and what you are OK with them eating? If so, how about a chicken training video in the future? ;-)

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 років тому

      Peter K. Hi Peter.. Is very easy to maintain once the beds & plumbing are all sorted.. At the moment I spend about 5 min a day out there to feed the fish, test the pH, pick the greens & that's about it..
      The main veggie beds are fenced off so the girls can free range a bit around the patch.. Only do it when we're out there though as they always find a way to break into the main patch if we don't keep an eye on them ;-) Would be great if we could train them to leave the veg alone..
      Cheers & all the best,
      Rob..
