We had a similar issue at our business. Ice Cream stores, we were told that we could not play CD's in the store without artist permission. This turned out to be a service that wanted to have us pay them to play their music only, which was mind numbing. Corporate sorted it out for us.
That's ridiculous because there are people who have way more viewers than furious pete I think we should get him way more subscribers than he already has!!!
What's sad is that you can literally see how UA-cam killed this channel by themselves...

As it happen to be legal to murder a certain folkgroup in Iceland just a few years back but since the law changed everyone who has followed the law should be hit with jail or fines.
If you are allowed to have guns now, you might get charged with it in a few years if it gets prohibited just for having it in the past. That is basically what this law is.

What about the A statute of limitations on this? Surely the old vids are too old to be an issue now? I had a mobile network come after me because I abandoned a contract several years earlier due to bad signal, i'd just had enough of their excuses.. I thought I had to pay the coupe of thousand they were asking until I found out the SOL was 6 years so I got out of paying when they took it to court.

They probably waited till you had a significant amount of videos they could sue you on to notify you of the violations... which shows they’re only after quick&easy money... otherwise they would’ve put the claim in immediately after your first violation... that’s really messed. Fight it please

I'm sure you know this but do not pay one Canadian cent voluntarily. Nothing. Make sure they have access to nothing. If if comes to the point that there is a Court Judgement against you (you will be notified, if Canada is anything like ths USA), switch bank accounts. Every time they get a judgement and court order against you and one of your associated networks and banks, it is going to cost them. They will not go after you for anything once they realize they will not recoup their costs. Keep on publicizing against them like this if they make your life miserable -- and considered a counter suit for unnecessary pain and suffering on their part against you.

Feels to me like there should have been some kind of understanding that you can't control music played faintly in the background then add in a grandfather clause where as you said copyright holders take over monetization or 50/50 split, etc. Sounds like 100% lawyer BS and a record label that was hard up for cash. This doesnt make any sense. Are they going after every single youtuber that has these particular songs uploaded on UA-cam? How about youtubers that upload music videos? Are they getting charged 10 grand? This just seems like a witch hunt.
People that upload songs got approvals from everyone that has anything to do with the song, and has a full description of links that lead to the original creators...

Why did you get fined? When UA-cam AI detects some copyright music, they just give all your ads revenues to the owner, why for you it was different? Is it because you had a network?

Something tells me that the liability clause in your former networks contract may be unenforceable or disputable clause given the point of joining networks such as that was to enable monitisation of your videos as thus the associated risks and rewards of the network is transferred at least in some part towards the business entity. Even if the network no longer exists it may preset an opportunity to reduce or renegotiate the fine under other laws that may have taken effect between the time the videos were uploaded and you leaving the network.
Not a lawyer of any sort and also bet you have already had a lawyer specialising in contract laws look into it. Just know that there are interesting loopholes and exclusions for situations like yours, especially when it comes to the entertainment industry (as part of a televised show various industry rules come into effect as a performer etc.)
