I have tried the Rift and Quest Touch controllers and the Index controllers. The Index controllers are really nice, but tbh, they are not much of an upgrade to the Touch controllers. You can even pretty easily add a simple strap so that you can "let go" of the controller the same way". Also I am actually missing the grib button on the Index controllers. Really helps making it clear when you are grabbing or releasing an object. Right now I have trouble knowing or even getting the game to release objects. Throwing often feels awkward. Do I have to release all my fingers? Did I release them enough? And I am really not a fan of the built in, non removable batteries either. Still though, they are the best controllers for VR right now, in my opinion. Finger tracking is really cool, and so is how it measures grib strength, not just whether you grib or not. But possibly what I like the most about the Index controllers, is that unlike the Touch controllers, you can actually connect them to the PC with a dongle, which means if you want to, you can use the Index controllers with any PC VR headset using some third party software that calibrates the two tracking systems. Like maybe WMR or Rift S tracking.

Yes but all the controllers have been shipped with a major design floor unfortunately. The joysticks don't click in all directions. Same bug on all controllers. Meaning you will struggle to click with joystick pointing forward which will inhibit running in some games
Vahki honestly I’m so happy that I got the knuckles by themselves, they are just such a good controller! Don’t expect too too much from finger tracking, that works but not as well as you think “finger tracking” would work. It works great ifyou hold up fingers like a number or the bird or a pinky or a thumbs up or counting but trying to do intricate movements like a shadow puppet or sign language it’s very difficult to make the sign you want them to. They are very comfortable and intuitive to use like holding a gun in h3 makes sense! I haven’t really used the buttons but the thumbstick feels great but click only works near the default position.

@Ben. I have the official Vive Wireless conversion for the original Vive. Can I use the the Vive wireless system (including battery) on the Index? Or do I need to wait for Valve to release their own wireless system? Thanks for the great video!
All I want from Valve Index is the controllers just because the controllers for Vive is annoying! You wouldn’t believe how many times I accidentally push the menu button in middle of the game by slightly squeezing my hand. Lucky for me it will work for Vive.
i am so jealous, i didnt get in on the first batch, it sold out so fast that i reserved mine 6 hours after orders opened up, after i got home from work, and by then it already said july 31 instead of june 28. hopefully thats just a safe date, and mine is only a couple weeks away. still no email to take payment though.
It will be worth the wait, i was a bit skeptical about all the praise before finally getting mine this afternoon, but ye, this is definitely a step towards or the start of next generation of VR, great visuals audio and comfort, all in all a 100% upgrade over a Vive.
There is one thing that i've dying to know, since the index comes with it's odd no touch earphones, is it still possible to connect your own headset, via cable?
I keep my knuckles EV3's in the box they came in, which is identical to the final Index controllers here. They have a weird enough shape that you can't really put them on a table in any good way
The controllers natively work alongside any headset that currently uses lighthouses, including the OG Vive. They also work with lighthouse 1.0 trackers (the ones that came with the OG Vive).
You dont need the headset but you DO need the sensor base station things. They support SteamVR 1.0 hardware though so if you currently have a Vive/Vive Pro/Pimax you should be good to go with just buying the controllers.
@@mr.shneeblie5330 As long as you have a lighthouses and are playing a game that's compatible with SteamVR, it will work. You need lighthouses though. WMR's tracking system won't work with them as the way they operate is fundamentally different.
@@mr.shneeblie5330 No, not unless you buy the lighthouses separately, and use a software kludge to align the WMR space with the SteamVR space. (Google "use vive controllers with WMR", and there will be tutorials and videos about it.) It's expensive and not fun. If you're going to get the lighthouses and controllers anyway, you might as well go the whole hog and get the headset (or a Vive).
Wait I'm confused (I think I must have missed some news at some point...) What is this? I thought Valve were working with the HTC? Does HTC make this? Edit: The gesture recognition is pretty impressive. Is that what this is? Valve wanted better resolution all around?
Wait for someone to review them, I have knuckles EV3 with Pimax 5K+ and they are basically unusable because they map wrong half the time or more when I try to use them. Like they reverse the direction of the controller and other such things.
MRTV did a first impressions video and said that the God rays were, surprisingly, worse on the Valve than the Rift S. He said the Valve has better FOV and Audio, but it's definitely not worth twice the money. I think those new Valve controllers look to be pretty sweet though. Here's a link. ua-cam.com/video/Bu5NOB6qiCE/v-deo.html
I'm expecting considerably increased resolution, FOV and eye tracking. It's all just little increments that doesn't justify the price. In 10 years time, we will be laughing how primitive these headsets are. Looking forward to 8k resolution, 180d FOV in a standalone headset :)
While you make fair points, having received mine today and being skeptical about the praise before, it really is a big upgrade even tho it might not seem that way on paper, the jump in clarity is amazing, yea sure more pixels would've been nice, but now i dont need to go out and also buy a 2080, my existing 1080 will do fine. And sure i want a theoretically best headset today aswell, its just not really feasible, these steps are needed (and yea, the index is a bigger step then you might realize, and i expected) so that we _can_ laugh at this tech 10 years from now. Cant simply just jump 10 years ahead, tech limitations aside the VR supporting gaming pc you need for something like a Vive is already quite expensive to the average consumer, and needing multiple 2080 Ti's to properly run a PiMax should tell you something about where we currently are with tech limits :P
@@CONMAN-gx1qr At a severe pixel density cost :P The problem with his suggested headset that i didnt even bother mentioning is that we're gonna need much more then 8K resolution, and the PiMax shows that :P
im so in two minds, i had a terrible rift experience which resulted in a refund and walking away from VR, then i just watched a guy spend 3 hours trying to get his index up and running and seeing a guy in his chat say his index was DOA, to watching this video where its seems to be very straightforward and enjoyable, i really dont want to spend this money on a product where i spend literally days troubleshooting like i did with the rift.
It's clearer than the UA-cam video. You really have to be looking to find the SDE on the headset. The pixel detail is just short of being able to comfortably function as a virtual computer monitor
Its a 720p video, from a preview window on his desktop monitor (we dont know the pixel dimensions of the actual window/view) while the headset has 2 1440x1600 panels. Its gonna be a mediocre representation of quality at best. Having one myself i can confirm its clearer/much less pixelated then this video & SDE is for all intends and purposes gone.
Im noticing no mayor performance differences on a 1080 (the non-Ti one) compared to my Vive, while also running the headset at 120hz, the only game i've found so far that really shows struggles (and even then mostly just in the loading screens cuz its a less-then-optimal unity game that doesnt do multi-threading) is Onward.
The tracking systems are completely different to the point where they're totally incompatible. You could, but only if you also buy lighthouses and it will only work on games purchased outside of the oculus store.
@@kioniii_a8252 With all due respect its a bit silly to combine them. Oculus already has finger tracking, and there's accessoires for the controllers so they have a similar strap as the Index Controllers & while the latter might be 'better' in essence its the same experience on both. Besides in the end you'd still be paying a premium price, but now its held back by the Rift / Rift S (as somebody who got their Index headset the 28th, i can confirm the claims that the visual audio and comfort quality is much better are true) And then there's the software hassle 'John Smith' pointed out, but you also need more usb ports, need to calibrate more stuff, need to turn on more stuff when u wanna play, and then there's the scare that Oculus might go after ReVive meaning that you could lose access to any Oculus store content because you run SteamVR hardware along side it, and so on. You're just making things hard on yourself combining the systems, if you want to be on the SteamVR side, then it makes sense to just go all the way, and that doesn't have to be this specific headset, there are more SteamVR headsets out there and coming, and those (will) support the Index controllers aswell. Besides its already 'leaked' that Valve just shared the final Index controller design with partners, Pimax are bscly 'making' the same controllers atm, and more companies might follow. If the Index is to expensive, then just accept that, wait for cheaper alternatives, this headset & the controllers are very much intended as an example to the industry, and similar hardware will become available at more affordable prices. Long story short, i personally would strongly advice against going the route of pairing the Index controllers with any Oculus headset. How many games actually benefit from finger tracking? its mostly just going to be for gestures, and you can already do that with the Oculus controllers? dont waste your time and more importantly money on this, save up for a index or whatever next headset, you'll thank me later ;)
I think 74 might be too much. I'm 71 and if I move it even a few degrees down below 70 it gets real bad real quick. The IPD is super important on this headset because of the dual lenses with canted screens. It's not like the Vive where you could get away with it and walk away with a bit of eye strain. I'd definitely try before you buy at that IPD.
My full review for the Index is now here! → ua-cam.com/video/2nOLIXa4dBA/v-deo.html

All I want from Valve Index is the controllers just because the controllers for Vive is annoying! You wouldn’t believe how many times I accidentally push the menu button in middle of the game by slightly squeezing my hand. Lucky for me it will work for Vive.
Find these videos kind of satisfying to watch
What Graphics Card do you use?
PC specs are on the channel About page: bitly.com/2RZpf8C
Im looking so much forward to reciving the index. My primary usage is ww2 flightsim, so i hope this is much better than the vive at that.
hope you get the best experience homie :)
i am so jealous, i didnt get in on the first batch, it sold out so fast that i reserved mine 6 hours after orders opened up, after i got home from work, and by then it already said july 31 instead of june 28. hopefully thats just a safe date, and mine is only a couple weeks away. still no email to take payment though.
It will be worth the wait, i was a bit skeptical about all the praise before finally getting mine this afternoon, but ye, this is definitely a step towards or the start of next generation of VR, great visuals audio and comfort, all in all a 100% upgrade over a Vive.
Did you wear glasses while playing?
rate htc lives and this new valve index, 1 to 100
What will be their scores?
so the two camera looking things on the front, do those track the controllers, or you need to buy the hanging trackers?
You need the hanging trackers 😀
Ben Plays VR unfortunate. I’m used to that windows mixed reality life lol. I need an upgrade though. I was thinking the oculus s but this looks dope
How much bigger does the FOV feel? I still don't know if I'd prefer this or a Pimax 5k due to the small FOV here.
The "Valve" outsourced handshake demo.
Stuck watching unboxing videos since the local post office decided not to stick to their estimates.
That really sucks ☹️
'I found something even better then your friendship this gun'
do you know when the valve index or the controllers will be out for the public?
Nope, I don’t know. The sooner they have a regular store page the better!!
How noticable is the extra FOV/less screen door effect in compared to the orginal vive ?
How heavy is the index headset compared to the Vive
There is one thing that i've dying to know, since the index comes with it's odd no touch earphones, is it still possible to connect your own headset, via cable?
would be nice if those boxes became as a useable stand for the equipment
I keep my knuckles EV3's in the box they came in, which is identical to the final Index controllers here. They have a weird enough shape that you can't really put them on a table in any good way
we get more and more cool vr hardware but what we desperately need is games to play
Do you need the headset to use the controllers? From what I understood the hand tracking ones could be purchased alone.
The controllers natively work alongside any headset that currently uses lighthouses, including the OG Vive. They also work with lighthouse 1.0 trackers (the ones that came with the OG Vive).
John Smith thank you! I’m not much of a tech guy but do the list of useable headsets include the original windows mixed reality?
What happens when you choose destroy core!? Nobody has done it!
Wait I'm confused (I think I must have missed some news at some point...) What is this? I thought Valve were working with the HTC? Does HTC make this?
Edit: The gesture recognition is pretty impressive. Is that what this is? Valve wanted better resolution all around?
Did your box come with Lighthouse 2.0?
Ben, im planning on getting the knuckles controllers with the vive. Is this a smart idea?
Wait for someone to review them, I have knuckles EV3 with Pimax 5K+ and they are basically unusable because they map wrong half the time or more when I try to use them. Like they reverse the direction of the controller and other such things.
@@noth606 thanks!
Is the Valve Index glasses-friendly, or do i need to get contacts?
Yes.
I'll be sure to cover that in my upcoming review! 😇
I am curious on God Ray's and sweet spot compared to Rift S please
MRTV did a first impressions video and said that the God rays were, surprisingly, worse on the Valve than the Rift S. He said the Valve has better FOV and Audio, but it's definitely not worth twice the money. I think those new Valve controllers look to be pretty sweet though. Here's a link.

I soooo want this ... wonder how much I can sell my og vive for ...
the index is easily the best unit out for vr
That’s dope. Seems like a pretty quality product.
The purple one sounds EXACTLY like the ego core from meet the cores
does the index play the games that the htc vive can? Really confused about the whole game thing.
Yup. It can play every Vive game 😁
@@BenPlaysVR cheers
WHERE DO I BUY THOSE CONTROLLERS?! I already have a HTC vive but I heard they were compatible?
Have a look at the steam store and look for "Valve Index Controllers
"
The controllers are compatible with lighthouse 1.0 and the Vive.
Get in line.
@@laartwork ...
200° FOV is already a thing with the pimax
@@CONMAN-gx1qr At a severe pixel density cost :P
The problem with his suggested headset that i didnt even bother mentioning is that we're gonna need much more then 8K resolution, and the PiMax shows that :P
@@suicidalbanananana the Pimax 8kX is 4k Per eye not 8k.
"Just when you think you know the answers I change the questions."
Classic quote from the great Roddy Piper.
im so in two minds, i had a terrible rift experience which resulted in a refund and walking away from VR, then i just watched a guy spend 3 hours trying to get his index up and running and seeing a guy in his chat say his index was DOA, to watching this video where its seems to be very straightforward and enjoyable, i really dont want to spend this money on a product where i spend literally days troubleshooting like i did with the rift.
Do you edit (ffw) through the loading screens or is your computer just that beastly?
I do cut out some downtime in the game footage 😁
@@BenPlaysVR the scenes in Superhot have maybe half a second of load time. Is that edited down?
Anyone know what the lens diameter is? Gonna be getting an index if i ever get of the waiting list, but i wanna get screen protectors for the lenses.
Just gotta ask. Do you see as clear as we do in the video or are there some pixel problem?
It's clearer than the UA-cam video. You really have to be looking to find the SDE on the headset. The pixel detail is just short of being able to comfortably function as a virtual computer monitor
Its a 720p video, from a preview window on his desktop monitor (we dont know the pixel dimensions of the actual window/view) while the headset has 2 1440x1600 panels. Its gonna be a mediocre representation of quality at best. Having one myself i can confirm its clearer/much less pixelated then this video & SDE is for all intends and purposes gone.
@@suicidalbanananana How's the vision on Pavlov? Is it much clearer?
It's the same improvement in everything.
why did they come in seperate boxes
What GPU do you use? does the higher pixel count of the index screens require more GPU juice that the vive?
I'm using a GTX 1080TI, and I'll try to include that in my upcoming review 😀
Im noticing no mayor performance differences on a 1080 (the non-Ti one) compared to my Vive, while also running the headset at 120hz, the only game i've found so far that really shows struggles (and even then mostly just in the loading screens cuz its a less-then-optimal unity game that doesnt do multi-threading) is Onward.
I really hope you can use the Index Knuckles on a rift, I would buy them if you could.
The tracking systems are completely different to the point where they're totally incompatible. You could, but only if you also buy lighthouses and it will only work on games purchased outside of the oculus store.
@@JohnSmith-sk7cg Yeah. it would be expensive but I think it would be worth it.
@@kioniii_a8252 With all due respect its a bit silly to combine them. Oculus already has finger tracking, and there's accessoires for the controllers so they have a similar strap as the Index Controllers & while the latter might be 'better' in essence its the same experience on both. Besides in the end you'd still be paying a premium price, but now its held back by the Rift / Rift S (as somebody who got their Index headset the 28th, i can confirm the claims that the visual audio and comfort quality is much better are true)
And then there's the software hassle 'John Smith' pointed out, but you also need more usb ports, need to calibrate more stuff, need to turn on more stuff when u wanna play, and then there's the scare that Oculus might go after ReVive meaning that you could lose access to any Oculus store content because you run SteamVR hardware along side it, and so on.
I'm so jealous ;'( I love my WMR setup but I would absolutely love to be able to upgrade. Alas, it is not in the cards.
oh...the foam thingy is for use with kids, who have smaller heads.
Aha! That makes sense 😀
Hows the ipd? Im at 74 think it would be comfortable?
I think 74 might be too much. I'm 71 and if I move it even a few degrees down below 70 it gets real bad real quick. The IPD is super important on this headset because of the dual lenses with canted screens. It's not like the Vive where you could get away with it and walk away with a bit of eye strain. I'd definitely try before you buy at that IPD.
Did you record on the Index microphone?
Yes!
i dig the robots Humor level, i would laugh an end up talking to it Knowing me
720p? is this 2009?
Oh wait it says I can order mine now but it ships by September 30
I just got my email today too. You should probably still get it. It will be a while before you have the option to purchase again later on.
