Thanks for the video. A few comments:
    1) My shoemaker dips the screws into resin before screwing them into. That way you don't have water going in, he says. Did your guys also do it or is that not a necessity?
    2) premature wear at the tip can also be fixed by a cobbler by only replacing the tip w/ a new leather part. You'd keep the bulk of your original sole (since it still has wear) and only add a small piece of new leather to the tip.
    3) sole protectors don't need to add to your sole. My shoemaker sanded down the original sole ever so slightly (w/o going into the stitching) and then glued the rubber on. It sits flush with the waist of the sole. This combined w/ a toeplate is the ultimate protection.

As always a very interesting video. Here in the UK I remember back in the 1950's/60's workmen often had metal plates on their boots. They were called SEGS and you could buy a selection of sizes and shapes on a card from Woolworths for very little money and hammer them on yourself, especially if you had an old Cobbler's Last. You could also buy HOB NAILS to hammer into the soles (Hob Nailed Boots) very popular with coal miners. Showing my age!

The first time I went to UK was in 1974, I was 17; at the time the most common shoes among boys were cowboy boots with tapered heels that wore too fast. So I did as many British guys did, and had a local cobbler add metal plates to my boots' heels. It was very common to hear the loud clicking when walking in the streets, and slipping was very common too.

Enjoyed your video! I have the “toe wear” problem on many of my shoes and talked with my local cobbler who installed very thin, but very durable sole savers on a new pair of Fifth Avenue AEs for me. I’m impressed with the shoe’s stability (especially on wet floors). More importantly, it’s now heaven driving my manual 6-speed transmission car in dress shoes-life is good!

I go for Sole Guards because they are the most practical for me. I live in a tropical country. Despite the dress shoes meant for office and events whereby I'm indoors most of the time, can't escape the wet pavements. I've started to favour dress shoes that come with Dainite soles too, for this reason of being more practical.

regarding the sole guards you showed, i have vibram sole guards on several pairs of shoes i own. they're different from the ones you showed because they're vibram soles, and barely add any height to the shoes. also, the cobbler did a good job of sanding down enough of the entire sole area where the sole guard fits into to just to ensure that there's no extra height formation

You introduced me to French tips as well as Allen Edmonds, I’ve worn Stacy Adams my whole life with a Kenneth Cole here and there but that’s about it. When I was a teen over forty years ago, I used to use metal taps on heel and toe but they where definitely slippery but we enjoyed the sound of them clacking and scraping when we walked. I have been for the last thirty years using sole savers but they are unattractive and I add the cheap nail on taps to the toe as well to help them last but they are ugly underneath. I do like the French tips and wonder if the brass nails in the heels are for looks or add a little life to the heels

As always Preston, superb video with informative explanation. I have the dalton cordovan boot from AE, from experience the heel is a bit slippery that I took a fall going down the stairs into my basement. Luckily I was able to break my fall by holding on to my railing, but landed a bit awkward. Right then and there I thought about what you stated in the past “suicide heel”. I have two pair of AEs with Dainite soles and they give a great grip in dry weather but if the pavement, cement or floor is the slightest bit wet they are as slick as mucosa on a doorknob. Thanks the video cleared up a lot of questions I had about the toe plates and it they can scratch floors and how much they effect walking. Do the leather bottoms not scratch as much with the toe plates or is just less wear on the tips of the sole? Also, is there something to put on the heals is it just a matter of keeping an eye on the rubber and have it replaced when needed?

I've read somewhere that the triumph shoe plates were made of brass back in the days while now they're just brass coated so after a few days the brass will just go away. Can you confirm? If so I'm going to have em made from a blacksmith. Thank you and keep up with the great videos!

Excellent excellent Preston👌🏼 I’ve got to to say I personally think the best option would be getting JR soles (Double) then put a nice Magna Sole Protector and heel guard or get the Dainite Soles and just add a heel guard too. Best way to preserve any shoe, I did this on my prior Ferragamos and made them last 16 years with me wearing them everyday. The click clack of a leather sole is nice, but a quality shoe is an investment. 🤝

  • @Timothy9x

I use sole guards to prevent resoling my shoes in the long run. I think it's cheaper to just replace the sole guards instead of resoling the shoe. However, my AE Cornwallis is experiencing premature wear on the toe even with the sole guards. I'm thinking of getting toe plates then cover them along with the rest of the soles with sole guards for my McAllisters. I don't know if it'll look good but I don't mind the extra lift from the sole guards.

Also, I have two pairs of boots with Dainite soles and Man they are super awesome and hard wearing. I think TOPYS are essential to any one who wishes to take care of their expensive shoes and wishes for them to last a long time

Do they make noise when you walk? Some high end dress shoes has a few nails at the front tip of the shoe. Is this for a similar purpose and what are those called?

Those are amazing, they look wonderful. I'm new to the channel, so glad I found it. Have you ever reviewed Beckett Simonon, I heard about their shoes, and were wondering if they were worth the money.

Just watching this video after three years you have posted it. What is the best shoe for daily longtime driving? Anything I can use to improve the wear and tear situation of my Dockers Oxford shoes? I know somebody who always uses thick soft microfiber mat/towels in the car floor to keep shoes from wearing out.

Preston, do you have any recommendations for cobblers in the northwest suburbs of Chicago?

How often do you apply Saphir Renovatuer? Every time you polish or once every few polishes?

I prefer how the Vibram toe guards look in comparison to the metal ones. Im guessing they wear much faster but atleast provide more grip and therefore more confidence with each step.

I'm going to be getting a pair of Woman's size 6 Cherry Oxford's, with a Louis XVI stacked leather heal from American Duchess soon. I plan do to have rubber half soles put on them (possibly (most likely) at a cobblers 40 minutes away). What do you think of heel taps? The closest I have come to having Oxford's is my Carolina logger boots, and my Dad's advise. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, please help. 🙏

Custom soles and especially toe plates really add some class to nice shoes.

Are J R Rendenbach soles the best replacement soles? Are there any competitors?
