In this video we look at many different backseat bed setups. There's many different options when it comes to different bed ideas for a backseat ranging from free to expensive, easy to difficult, and uncomfortable to extremely comfortable. I show you all the different ideas that I have either tried myself or heard of other people trying as an option.

That table idea is actually really good. I might use that
I drive a 2018 Ram 3500 and they have a platform from factory that folds out when you lift up the back seats. I throw a toddler bed mattress on top of that and a twin size mattress topper from Walmart on top of the mattress. The mattress is about 1 ft short, but I stuff a blanket or pillows there to fill that void. You can get those mattresses memory foam too!
I got a trifold mattress and you can like cut the foam down or I just let it fold at the end with the extra length.
Same, I slept on the platform for the first time last night and I really wish I had a mattress.
I did the baby mattress for a while too
I just got the same model truck, I was looking for the factory platform that you mentioned but not quite sure what I’m looking for. Do you have anymore details or a link for this product?
Some great ideas. I like using a camping air mattress which rolls up and inflates easily. I loved the two separate platform idea for space savings.
Huge Hamburger Helper....this is by far the most thorough explanation of different sleep options in a pickup cab....well done!
I go on weekend trips all the time on my own. My goal is just to do whatever it is that I’m visiting, such as the concert, museum, amusement park, etc. I don’t need luxury, just accessibility. Hotels get annoying and expensive. They’re ok on a special vacation, but not in the frequency I need them. This is something I’m gonna try.
Thanks Daniel. I like the table idea. Already have the table so I'll try that before I go all the way and take out the seat.
RC Ballard That’s great! Let us know how you end up liking it! I would put a 40 pack of water at the end where it doesn’t cover as much and that did the trick since it was the end at my feet and the door opening. It was super convenient!
Nice content. Love the ideas.
Great ideas! Thanks for all you do to help and encourage. Maybe you could split open an old garden hose and staple around the edge of your plywood. That should keep the plywood from puncturing/wearing through your mattress.
Hey Mark! That's a great idea to keep things protected! Thanks for sharing! Happy to help my friend! God bless!
thanks for this video! Thinking about going with the more permanent set up in my F-450....removal of the entire back seat looks to be the key for me!
I put a piece of plywood with front posts with a memory foam mattress
Quite handy yet economical.. Nice..
Thanks! God bless!
The different Bed setups look good
Ricky Blackshear I’ve been wanting to make this video for a long time! Hopefully it can spark some ideas. It took me almost 4 years to finally make the decision to go more permanent lol wish I had done that years ago no lol as always thank you for your support and hope you are doing well my friend!! 😎
Greata video, i'll have to see about my Ridgeline (albeit I'm 6'1") Thanks!!
In my Ram I can make the seats fold up and the floor can be flat and I use a trifold mattress. It is pretty comfy tbh.
Ryder is a stealth, teleportation master!
I’m sleeping in the back of my ram right now getting to work on a proper bed this weekend
Am having a foam mattress cut to size at a hometown mattress co. Also covered..should be comfy. When I dont use it it can also go in the box under the tonneau top..39.5 x60..be great for short camping/road trips..
“I’m a very large guy so it’s not a pretty taco.” 🤣 very informative video Daniel! Great job brother.
Haha thanks brother! Thanks for reaching out my friend!
Seen folks take out the passenger seat and the back seat, and build a bed on the right side so you can stretch out and have the area behind the driver seat for storage. Also raised the bed up for storage underneath the bed
I was just thinking about trying this exact setup!
Something else that works in short bed camper set ups and would work here as well is filling up the gaps and then using crib mattresses (super cheap to find used). They will be closer to the width of the truck. It won’t be as wide but you may be able to use two side by side
I bought 2 toddler mattresses that fit pretty well but it was the absolute worst night of sleep I have ever had, period. I wish it would have been a real option for me, but it was a nightmare that I immediately returned
I have a gmc Sierra extended cab and am looking to see how I can use the space for over night/weekend camping and fishing trips with my son. I might need to measure and look into what it takes to remove the back bench based on this. Thanks for the idea! I’m also looking at taking the passenger seat out and folding the rear bench up. Lots to go over
please make a video showing us the final result
I built a 3/4 inch platform (carpeted) with 2x6 mounts underneath with a long pullout drawer for storage (cloths mostly ). I bought a 7 inch thick matress 28x79 x7. it is so compfy. I could not afford to buy a trailer and tow it with the price of fuel on my 9000 mile northern western Canada roadtrip in July , August and September of 2022. I left from Thunder Bay Ontario. I got a total of 8 hotel nights on my 3 month trip. Total cost of my back seat bed project was around 800 dollars as I did all the work myself.(took the back seat completely out). The matress was the most expensive $340.00 dollars, then the cover comforter and downe sleeping bag and two pillows. The truck backseat conversion was on my 2016 ford f150 3.5 ecoboost 4x4. 😊Saved over 4k in fuel (not pulling a trailer) and prolly another 1000 dollars not having to get campsites which I did use proly about only 20 times. I had my 14 foot boat attached on top of the truckcap. I panned for gold for 3 days on the Indian river in the Yukon, Near dawson city where the gold rush started back in the 1890s and I got about 1/2/ ounce of gold..😊 Edited for spelling mistakes...lol
The best way to take the back seat completely out and build your bed you put a good mattress
For a better weight option, you might look into an aluminum frame properly welded , strength could be satisfactory. As always Daniel i really appreciate your videos!
I like the table bed that’s a good idea never seen that before great video Brother Daniel pray that all is well with you sorry to keep it short but I am on the road thank you for the video God bless you and be safe
Hey man! Hope these ideas can help! Have a good one sir! Be safe out there!
Just get the air mattress on Amazon that comes with inserts yo put on floor between seats that way it stays leveled, then go to Walmart and buy one of the twin xl mattress that's in the box. Unravel on the backseat and the inserts (already inflated) and your set. Inserts last a long time. Works for me and I hotshot across the lower 48
Do you find the mattress deflates overnight? I read reviews that say they do deflate.
Yea 100% true but not the inserts that come with that go between the seats. I've had mine almost a year amd they have not had any puncture or tears
Cool video!
Joel Ripke Thanks man! 😎
My dodge ram came stock with a bord with rug on it to lay flat after the seat is up.
Thank u
Im wanting to try to find a back seat out of one of the old full size conversin vans that fold out.
Brad Taulbee ahhh very cool! That’ll be neat! If it ends up working out for you, let us know!
I added a pee hose for on the go. Open your compartment on either side. Drill a 1/2 hole and put a few feet of heater hose attached to a funnel. Eliminate the piss bottle and long fast walks in the weather first thing in the morning.
As to the gap between the air mattress and the back of the seat... It's a GREAT place to store your shotgun 🤔 while you sleep.😉
Senile Travel You’re not wrong!! 😎😉
Handling a rifle or shotgun inside a vehicle is far from ideal. Handgun is easier to conceal and maneuver.
@@drdrew3 who said it was a full length shotgun 😉
Been trying to make something work for a while now. Got a pitman for the backseat, but I'm too darn tall. Just can seem to get it right. Like taking out the back seat option, but with a Lil guy I wouldn't habe the time to constantly reinstall. Shucks
Get a cheap memory foam mattress and cut it to size with a razor knife- much more comfortable than air mattress
I have been trying to find a bed cap for my Dakota Quad Cab, I have found nothing. This gives me the idea to remove my rear seat and "remodel" that area into a permanent tiny camper.
Removing the rear seat would give me about an extra 3.5 sq ft of space, and I can move the front passenger seat forward about 6 inches and tilt it forward for even more room. That would make it better than one of those "coffin campers" that they are charging $8,000 for.
Has anyone ever thought about using one of those Purple mattress?
Hey, great video. I know in one of your last videos before the truck problems you mentioned some new tires that you were trying out. How are they holding up for you?
Rick Smith Well, since I haven’t been on the road much with the virus stuff the last few months I think I only have 15-20k miles on them. So far they still look brand new to me but I haven’t measured them yet. I will definitely be giving an update on that. Thank you! I just don’t want to give a review prematurely and people end up hurt because they took my recommendation. 😎
@@HighMileageHelper Understood. Thank you!
I’m 6’6 will it work with me
I have a 1992 f350
Hiking sleeping pads are narrower and shorter which may fit better without having to crumple.
Hey that's a great idea! Thanks for sharing that! Sorry it took so long to get back to you!
air pads last longer if they are deflated when not in use.
Can a person with 187cm sleep in the back?
Do you put anything on top of the mattress that prevents the dog from puncturing it, or is the mattress just that resilient?
GONAVYDAS05 I just have a few layers of blankets on top. It has worked out well!
Do you think this board/twin mattress setup would fit in an F-150 supercrew?
I would think so. I use to fold the edge of the air mattress in between a sheet of wood and the folding seat before airing it up. So as long as you set it all up in place before inflating it, I think it would work out. God bless my friend!
Do you idle all night when it’s really hot out? If so, have you had any problems with fumes in the cab?
I do and I'll be making a video on that at some point! and no I haven't had any issues with fumes in cab yet, thankfully!! God bless my friend!
Origami mattress company in Saint Paul Minnesota will build a mattress to the size you want so it will fit the way you want it to fit and get rid of the airmattress
They have twin size tempur-pedic and you won't ever have to pop another air mattress, yeah you pay more but over time it's cheaper.
My buddy has been trying to talk me into that but I take forever to make a decision haha I will have to look more into it! Thank you reaching out!
Great if you are under 5'7". What if you are taller than that???
Carpenter? No. Wood Butcher? Yes.
Hi
Plywood with 2x4 legs would have been easier.
A foam mattress bought just once, would be long term less hassle.
A quick tip: Buy 2 air mattresses so you always have a spare.
I thought that DOT prevented setups like this? How do these setups get passed them?
They aren’t considered sleeper births, just taking the seat out. Evidently there are companies that can take off door paneling and get it to be the right dimensions to be a sleeper birth. You can’t run team but you can still do your 10 hours alone in a truck. There’s companies in Elkhart/Goshen IN that do it all the time to be DOT approved
@@HighMileageHelper infor on this please am from elkhart/goshen
They make an air mattress that has blowup sections for the foot area that levels the mattress out you don’t need to add all of the tables and boards.
Watch the whole video lol
Have you ever had anything said to you about sleeping in your backseat seeing how it isn't up to dot specs?
I’ve never had anything said to me about it for how I run. I’ve had a few officers who stressed out; thinking I was taking my 34’s in it. Except I ONLY take my 34’s at home during the weekends so they quickly backpedaled their response and said no problem which was fairly funny to watch because they thought they had caught me or something? Haha
@@HighMileageHelper
Ahhh ok very good info to know im currently in the application process and that was one of the only things I was concerned with. Thank you for all the informative information safe travels and hope to see you out on the road one day
😎
What's with the DOT Inspection for non CDL vehicles? Is that just your annual state based inspection?
Running commercial you have to have an annual inspection even on a 3500
I personally built a platform and then I put a 10 inch memory foam mattress on top of it and trimmed it to fit in between the doors
JM Parker Hey! That’s awesome! What did you use to trim the bed with?
@@HighMileageHelper believe it or not just a sharp knife
Any pics you can send to an email? Of the platform..
Dark tinted windows eliminate the need for a lot of that
What are your thoughts on running your diesl truck overnight when its too cold or too hot? I think some use a quite generator outside to run a heater or AC unit. And technology is helping with some battery generators like the Titan that can run small heaters or the AC Zero Breeze Mark II. Any thoughts?
For now, I run my truck every night. I haven't dove into the world of generators and other options, but that may be my future. We'll see! lol Those sound like great ideas though!!
Two words, memory foam
This video is great, but if we didn’t have greedy brokers we could sleep in hotels every night. How does Abf, ups, fedex afford it for their drivers ?
lol
I was thinking of maybe removing passenger seat and rear seat bench and making a bed on passenger side. Feet would be below glove box head below rear window. Basically would only have driver seat in truck. I never have passengers in my truck so why not haha
You should go to matress shop take measurements amd get a nice foam matress made shouldntt be more the few hundred bucks
