- This Music video from Video Mods features game assets from Sponge Bob Square Pants: Lights, Camera, Pants! by THQ and the song "All the Small Things" from Blink182. Software used was Maya, Fusion, Lightwave, and Final Cut Pro. This Mod is considered a part of Lost media, and has a lot of folks who seen it wondering What? How? Why? and WTF?
Well, that's quite a story. The video you have seen in terrible lo-Rez and of hazy fever dreams was created in les than 48 hours by a very small team. Video mods was a crazy schedule, we had about one month of total production time per episode and a small team. Most mods had about 2 weeks of time allotted to its production cycle and we had 4 mods per episode to generate. Some were made like a live action video ala "band live performance" and those were designed to take less time so more time could be spent on ones that had more cinematic flair.
Sponge Bob was one of them we spent more time on. The crew was excited to do this but then the issues popped up. The THQ game had a very unusual game engine. Most of the environments and characters were not whole meshes. The data dump we got from THQ was messy and cryptic. Nothing was named by logical names but had an internal code that their game engine would know and assembly the characters with. Facial animation wasn't blend shape based but some sort of object replacement vertex system. So just getting the assets out of the game into something animatable in Maya took more time than usual.
Mocap didn't work for these characters and it was decided early on it was going to be all Keyframe based. So time was spent keyframing lip-sync and Patrick and Sponge Bob playing Bikini Bottom style guitars and starfish shaped drums.
MTV's was contractually required to get approval from Stephen Hillenberg (Sponge Bobs creator) That did not go well. Our almost 90% finished video was not approved. We were told that Stephen said "Sponge Bob does not Sing" and "Sponge Bob does not play guitar" Dumb founded we all were, as the show and movies clearly were not the case. "Goofy Goober" anyone? No time to fight or argue, MTV (our Client) instructions were abundantly clear. No singing, no instruments.
In the space of less than 48 hours, we redid the video recycling as much as we could from the first video. Removed the lip-sync and instruments and made it into a dance contest. Animators constructed a bunch of looping animations to cycle and fill out a crowd and made some dance cycles for the hero characters. We got the show delivered on time.
This video was not as many comments keep saying Battle for Bikini Bottom. All one has to do is look. Here is a screen shot of BFBB, the VideoMod, and Lights Camera Pants. Both Sponge Bobs eye color and texture match Lights Camera Pants, as does his yellow skin under the lighting. In BFBB he looks greener and the textures are lower rez. His blue eye color is not a match.

Stop saying its not what I am saying. I was there. I helped to create this. I think I would know. We had to rebuild the models and update textures that were broken. The model wasn't prepped for IK based animation in MAYA. Some of the models had to be completely rebuilt from scratch using the originals as templates so they would feel the same. - Фільми й анімація

If Stephen Hillenberg himself rejected the original version on account of inaccurate character portrayals, does that mean this music video is actually authentic and certified SpongeBob canon?
I would have to say, this was approved by him. Ergo, it is canon.

@@VideoModsHD I will say, this is an awesome piece of art. This whole thing kinda reminded me of when Nintendo animated a Luigi’s Mansion trailer using only GameCube hardware back in August 2000. That footage was lost too, I knew someone who had the footage and was a British game journalist. It was later uploaded on November 2021.
which means that blink 182 is canon, which means that the parodys of it are too. WHICH MEANS THAT spongebob, patrick, squidward, sandy parody is CANON IN THE SPONGEBOB UNIVERSE, there's more. That means youtube is canon also, WHICH MEANS THAT GRILLED CHEESE OBAMA SANDWICH IS CANON IN THE SPONGEBOB UNVERSE

Unironically, I can’t remember a single movie with a dance party ending. I do remember that The Emoji Movie had one, but no one wants to remember that.
Hearing Hillenburg say “SpongeBob doesn’t sing” seems really bizarre considering one of if not the most popular episode of the show is one that ends with the sponge singing. Regardless seeing this thing in a higher quality is simply spectacular and the story behind it is simply fascinating.
I think it was more meant as a "SpongeBob doesnt lip sync to anothers voice" kind of thing. I think he took issue with blink182s sound coming from him and that diluting the character brand.

That’s because if you make a 3D model it’s face doesn’t move until you make the face move so when they animated this they didn’t make the other characters have face movements as they did with SpongeBob so all the other characters can’t move their eyes hence the fact that the are starring into space
Despite the lack of face rigging making them look robotic, there's some genuinely good animation here (my personal favorite is Patrick's moves at 1:17)

really interesting story, though I can't imagine hillenburg would be against spongebob singing and playing the guitar. I mean as you pointed out, he does it in the show. Maybe stuff just got mixed up with some higher-up. Anyways the final product is still amusing and really charming, glad to see in HD.
My thoughts were that as a video mod, Sponge Bob was effectively performing lip-sync karaoke. Since the same year the first movie came out and he sang "Goofy Goober" I think he was being protective of his creation. Like Sponge Bob wouldn't do it that way....
Maybe he just wasn’t comfortable with him singing this specific song?

The fact that you guys got this done in 48 hours is impressive as hell! You guys better have gotten a big raise for this, cause considering you almost had the first version of the product basically done and you threw it out cause Stephen didn't like it and then made this in so little time, I'm super impressed!
I am fucking THRILLED to have the full version and in higher quality. I just know that if I had seen this as a kid, I would've watched it over and over again as I am now as an adult. God bless you for gracing humanity with this.

To be fair on the BFBB comparison, the models do looks similar between games here. Especially when looking at the low-rez VHS upload a while ago that makes it look really indistinguishable, even when looking closely. Plus all of the dancing background NPCs in the video also having a notable presence in BFBB. Or at least were often seen in that game. I guess when making Lights, Camera, Pants, some models where given tweaks here and there from the BFBB designs, which would make sense for a different game. That's just a theory. Still fun music video. :)
1:42 Just noticed the tiny hands on Plankton there. That definitely wasn't in BFBB, which were just stubbles... There you go, even more definitive proof for your case! :)

It is nice and wonderful that the full music video mod is uploaded in its glory. But, am I the only one who thinks that SpongeBob is the only character that is showing more facial expressions while the other characters are not? As in just dancing while not blinking or making any movement with their mouths.

It's funny that this video said the assets used in this music video is from "Lights, camera, pants." But all the models are from heavy Iorn's SpongeBob games.
The description says otherwise, it's from Lights, Camera, Pants. Look at Plankton's hands. It's closer to the LCP model.

...I'm not complaining though, this video perfectly encapsulates the joy and excitement of SpongeBob's world.

I think there is either some misrembering or miscommunication there(because this was literally the year after Spongebob did Goofy Goober Rock in the movie). My guess was miscommunication with some MTV rep. Likely Hillenburg probably said something like "Spongebob shouldn't sing to THIS song".

I'm someone nearing the end of their undergrad in 3D Animation, and the actual, professional existence of these videos has fascinated me just due to how loose and wild this series gets sometimes. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask a few questions I've been itching to know ever since I learned about these Video Mods (and if you do mind, please just ignore me):
1. How much creative control did you have in regards to which IP went with which song?
Was it "Here's 10 songs, figure it out" or was it more "Star Wars is only allowed to go with Frans Ferdinand"?
2. How, or perhaps maybe how "didn't" you guys got away with using some of the models you did, specifically for "Stand and Choose"? There's a point where Sonic and Scorpion seem to be playing chess, and the only thing going through my mind is what the hell the law department at MTV was looking like the next few days after. Did you have the rights, or was this "I know this model can go into this engine, grab the FBX an we can ask for forgiveness later?"
3. It sounds like working on Video Mods was kind of a hell job, but I'm sure you probably had some fun on it. What's the best thing you feel you got away with during the time you worked on the series, and what's something that you were all really hoping you'd be allowed to do/ get past the censors that just didn't pan out?

******** Not very much. The bands and the companies that were available we pretty much authorized by MTV. Their lawyers went out and got the contracts and we got a list. I think if there was a better pairing than the one on the list They would had listened, but 99% of that was done outside of when we got it.

******** Nope, that one was first season. We did season 2. I cant say what that one was or why.
3. It sounds like working on Video Mods was kind of a hell job, but I'm sure you probably had some fun on it.
******** It wasn't really hell. It was a lot of fun. Every 4 weeks we were doing another episode and it was challenging. It was a very small crew of about 8 artists and 4 producers/supervisors total. It was a huge task for Our little company and the biggest challenge was rendering all of that CG. Each video generated about 80,000 frames. That's 3.5 minutes at 30FPS for 8 different full camera passes. My favorite moment /thing was that we fixed SpongeBob in 48 hours and re did the whole video. My favorite video is coming which was the Silent Hill one. I snuck in a whole bunch of references into that one.
Someone needs to remake this with the rehydrated assets 😂 sandy thrusting 😂 patrick goin beast mode 😂 patrick should have won 😂 where’s squidward 😂 spongebob spongebob 😂 it’s just a bunch of cheap walk cycles 😂 and so forth
That would take about a year to remake because of the fish's cheering in the background

As strange as the video is, I think I prefer it to a generic "spongebob lip syncs to a blink-182 song" video. The low poly models that clip into each other, the flat textures that clash. It feels like these characters are supposed to be doing simple dances while staring out into space. It reminds me of costumed actors at a theme park.

However I have found the original version which was shot down by Stephen Helgenberger as "Spongebob don't sing or play guitar" Original rough cut..... It is on its way!!!!
