I absolutely loved this video. The tones were powerful, but more importantly, you seemed to be happy just to play instead of having to dial in an amp for a demo. I'm glad you had that experience.
The ToneBlock and Overdrive units seem to be secret weapons for modelers and light travelers. Kurt Ballou, Zuma of Kruelty, and some others seems to stand by them.
Love my Quilter 202. I put a Parametric EQ and compressor in the FX Loop (can dial in and get rid of those "cold mids" you were talking about). It then gives me far more EQ control and I also set the LIMITER (instead of using the compressor) on around 3 (smooths things out). The para made a big difference in getting the exact sound I wanted. I run a CCK Honey Scream (boost and light gain) into a Marshall Jackhammer and Sinvertek N5 3D and it for sure does everything I want it too (cleans, mild, heavy). You should try running a basic compressor ( I use a modded Dyna Comp M102) in the loop and you can achieve a SAG like effect if you don't go overboard which might be something desired to give you more of a "tube amp" feel. Can't tell you enough how much I enjoy the Quilter as well. The cleans are fantastic and it's an awesome pedal platform. Enjoyed this!
@@belligerentamateurthat would mean you use the fx return input. This way is more like a dirt pedal into a normal amp. But no matter what I think, it is a grwat video, great playing and sounds!
Earth Crisis and Snapcase will always hold a special place in My heart! Remember the crate power blocks, AMT tube cakes, VHT Micro power, Carvin Mach 100, Tech 21 engines, 5mm and other EHX stuff like howitzer, and of course BabyBomb. Well a lot of it is getting rebranded. Love You Brother! Thanks!
Yeah Kyle I got the Quilter Mach 3 Pro 200 amp that I use in the Plexi setting and use the Walrus Audio Eraser for gain and an overdrive to tighten it up and it delivers. Doesn’t hurt to then use the Gup Tech Ped Eq pedal in the FX return for more open and deep sounds.
I just got a mach 3 because I wanted to rack it with a power conditioner/regulator. I am hoping this sounds great, pick up my 4x12 tomorrow. Have a bunch of pedals to go with it.
It's so funny you made a video on this! I recently went to a show and was blown away by this bands live tone. I started to look at their gear and noticed the guitar players both had this unit! Sounds great!
I have a Toneblock 200 which came before the 202. It only has a Gain, Tone & Wattage controls and no FX Loop or character switches. It’s louder than all get out. Plenty of headroom. I used it for a long time to power my Axe FX II instead of using the power section of my ‘94 5150. My biggest complaint is that I feel there is some bass roll off in the preamp.
I think you’ll like the Quilter Overdrive 200 or 202 since it is emulating the tones of a Mark IIC+ and a Dumble Overdrive that the Quilter crew got their hands on. It’s their high gain amps.
I've had 2 Tone Block 200's for years. Got them rack mounted with the Quilter bracket. I use them for a stereo rig setup. Mine are the discontinued model. I will never sell these. They are really amazing. I am going to get another Block for a grab and go small pedal board.
I got to gig with Earth Crisis at Sea Seas in Moosic/Wilkes Barre in the 90s. We borrowed some gear from CHamber. CHAMBER was a very underrated band from PA that was kinda like heavy proto ScreamoCore. I have been thinking of going the small SS power amp route with my REVV preamp pedals and drives.. Just stick one of my tube mic preamps in there to warm it up after the preamps but before the 10 band Caline EQ
Would love to see a comparison between the 202 and the Seymour Duncan PS 200. I’ve been super happy with the PS 200 but also curious about Quilter gear. It’d be awesome to see how they stack up against each other as they seem to be the most popular/best talked about from what I’ve seen 🤘
I'd love to see you demo the tonex with your 6505-1992 edition profile, using the quilter as the power amp straight into that 212. Or a 412. To me that's what I'm looking for and hoping that it's going to be exactly as I am imagining based on what this Poweramp test proved to me. That quilter is absolutely badass
7:23 sold me on it lmao. I always thought the 5150 power section one was of the beefiest power sections you can run a preamp or modeler into, and honestly that sounded just as beefy and gnarly but in it's own way. EDIT: dude that sound at 14:50 was fucking eeeeeevil
Quilter ToneBlock 202 is fantastic! It's my main gigging amp these days as it's incredibly lightweight and is more than loud enough for most gigging situations. I've only had two real issues with it and other gear. 1- The EVH 5150 pedal from MXR Sounds really bad through this amp (think late 2000's Line6 insane channel). 2- For single coil guitars it has WAY too much bass and can really muddy up your live sound without some kind of low cut/eq in the signal chain.
for jam sessions away from home Iam really a fan of solid state poweramps and preamps. Last session I combined the Orange terrorstamp with the dirty tree and put that hrough the SD Powerstage. Used a 2x12 with a V30 and a greenback. Killer metalsetup for c# tuning
Dude....that thing sounds KILLER!! I’ll need to check out some examples in the clean, mid gain, and lead w/effects.....but I’m confident it will work in those application. Great demo!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Great video, Kyle! I'm seriously impressed with the Quilter. I play classic rock and I tried another guitarists rig at a gig recently and he had a Quilter And WOW, it was great. I'm getting too old to be hauling around a heavy tube amp. So I'm gonna get one of these and with my HB 2-12 celestion speaker 🔊 cab I should be good to go. Thanks again for a terrific video!😀
I bought a UK Cub, for gigging, since we no longer have a crew and it's much easier to haul than my Marshalls. We A/Bd it against my main head, and while it of course doesn't have quite the grunt of a 4x12, it's shockingly close. And it's louder than Hell- I barely have the volume up, and it more than keeps up with my VERY loud drummer.
I love my quilter hx stomp setup and they both fit on my pedal board i lugged around 4-12 cabs and tube amps for years and now it’s just my board and a orange 2-12 open back.
"And I'm not complaining!" Hahaha good times Kyle. Wouldn't mind a demo of the KSR PA50 or 25 tube power amp. Also, love Earth Crisis, saw the Firestorm anniversary show in CA back in November.
I own the Tone Block 202 and the Overdrive 202. Both are simply amazing amps. I use mine mostly as a pedal platform. They take pedals better than I've seen any amp take. The Tone on these amps are incredible in my opinion. I'm looking to get the Quilter Aviator Mk3. It sounds like another incredible amp from Quilter. I really like the demo you did using it with the 6505. Very very cool!
Interesting that you ran the preamp into the front of the Quilter, because you can also just run it through the FX return, so you can bypass the preamp on the Quilter and just use it as a power amp. That way you're not running a preamp into another preamp. You do get an extra set of EQ controls if you run it through the front, so that's cool, but it's hard to avoid coloring from the second preamp. Is there a reason why you went into the front instead of the loop? I'm asking because I always run my preamps through my Quilter Overdrive 202 into the FX return...
@@djabthrash Yes. That would have been nice. That's one of the reasons why I use a separate preamp through the return instead of the preamp itself. On its own, it sounds really good, but it doesn't have enough control if you're planning on using different bottoms/speakers. As a gigging musician, you don't always know what bottom you're getting on backline especially when on tour. So presence and depth are particularly useful in those circumstances. I think they decided to leave those controls off to save more space and make it super small and light (which it is). However, it is definitely a compromise.
Great video, as always 🤘 I have been using Quilters for years. They are definitely a secret weapon. They do everything from the cleanest Jazz tones to the thickest chugs. My main set up with a Quilter is an SNK pedals VHD into a Quilter Overdrive. Cheaper and lighter solution to an actual Ampeg VH and it sounds amazing.
I have a Quilter OD 202 and I'm selling it. The overdrive channel channel with the limiter can do some interesting things, but not for me. I just prefer tube distortion. Old school I guess. These things win all the battles when it comes to size and weight and volume, it's insanely loud for being so small and light! If I ever need a fly rig I'd definitely consider picking up one of these though, just gotta find the right preamp! Thanks for vid Kyle!
I use a Superblock UK's power section when I'm playing at bedroom levels. It sounds better than my boutique amp's tube power amp at 80 db ish or less. I also use two of them with my Landry LS30 for a w/d/w rig. Kyle, you really need to look into doing a demo of the Landry Lexi or 100M
The Orange Pedal Baby 100 is another similarly suited item, though it doesn't have an effects loop, and it's just a clean preamp and class A/B power amp. TBH I recently bought an Orange Super Crush 100 and it sounds a lot better to put preamp pedals in the FX loop on the clean channel, with your overdrive going into the front input of the amp. I have a Joyo Oxford Sound, and it surprised me, how similar the preamp pedal and the amp's actual high gain preamp sound.
Love my Quilter 101mh, don't think I've ever had the volume above 1/2 and still been told it's too loud. even scaled down to a Blockdock 12 and just grab and go with my little combo.
@BorisBidjanSaberi11 Right now it's definitely the Superblock UK. I can really get a lot of amazing tones out of it! I'm using a Friedman BE OD Deluxe in front end and a Gup Tech Que Bec pedal in the fx loop.
I was using a Quilter Pro Block 200 for awhile until I came across a Seymour Duncan Powerstage 200 and ended up going with the Seymour Duncan one and sold the Quilter one.
I thought it sounded really, really really good.!! Especially paired with the synergy preamps. Thinking this thing would pair very well with my Axe FX III

quilter makes soe serous stuff. however also my trusty valvestate 8004 power amp is not that bad. frfr quilter system sounds almost identical to my linear mode on the valvestate, hi-fi if you can pass my assertion. good for modelers and preamps however not at all a valve power amp sound for sure. good but different
I subscribed! Yeah! 😃 Our Band Lead Gitarre Player send me the Link with your channel on UA-cam here. Specially cause the Quilter 202 … he got it 😃 since round one week ago. And it is a exactly all about you entertain and telling us about THE POWER AMP here. Me as the Bass Man I am absolutely YEAH! with all the whole technical and Sound AND ! Alright!! Your Channel is Awsome YEAH! Thanks a lot
Some Quilter products are great such as the Interblock 45 (discontinued). Used it recently when my tube amp died on a live show. Also had a MicroPro Mach II, great sounding portable amp, wish I kept it. But their Avaitor Cubs are dogs. Had both the Fender version and the Marshall/Vox version. Those are not worth it. Toneblocks all the way either primary or backup amps.
Would love a power amp shootout, like this vs. the Blackstar Amped1, Powerstage, etc.

quilter makes soe serous stuff. however also my trusty valvestate 8004 power amp is not that bad. frfr quilter system sounds almost identical to my linear mode on the valvestate, hi-fi if you can pass my assertion. good for modelers and preamps however not at all a valve power amp sound for sure. good but different
Didn’t know you could get such a full tone from just a preamp pedal and power amp
It’s the same as any other amp lol
Feel so good knowing, Earth Crisis uses the same rig as me 😂

Alright!! Your Channel is Awsome YEAH! Thanks a lot
Sounds pretty big 🤘
Some Quilter products are great such as the Interblock 45 (discontinued). Used it recently when my tube amp died on a live show. Also had a MicroPro Mach II, great sounding portable amp, wish I kept it. But their Avaitor Cubs are dogs. Had both the Fender version and the Marshall/Vox version. Those are not worth it. Toneblocks all the way either primary or backup amps.
That shirt is hilarious Kyle!
Much better than amp1 from bluguitar? I have to try one!
2 very different machines
Riff at 7:09 that's LeeWay right?

I feel like this is an updated version of the Crate Power Block.
