Best idea so far! These videos are a constant inspiration for lots of people. Here's a recommendation: include a rough price estimate for what these would cost to build. I know it's pretty difficult to determine, but maybe you could produce a simple chart including the materials for the project with estimated prices, and builders with several of those materials laying around could subtract that price. Just a thought. Great video as always.
The LCD driver board actually has a onboard 5V regulator. You can bypass it and feed 5V direcly from the powerbank to increase efficiancy. Lithium battery (4.2V)->Power bank step up (12V)->Driver board (5V) isnt very efficiant.
Do you mean taking 5v directly from the power bank? If so, I have that same power bank and you can't output 12v and 5v from it at the same time. I've tried.
@@Paul_WithaP I meant why bother to get 12V if the LCD driver can work with 5V with modification. You can ditch the USB-PD board entirely. And you can use cheaper powerbanks or existing ones which don't support the QC or USB-PD specifications.
@@abdulazeez.98 I tore down some LVDS panels and they have step up drivers on TCON board for the backlight LEDs. I think they can work off 5V. I remember seeing greatscott's video where he bypasses the buck regulator in his DIY monitor video. Many portable monitors for laptops run off of a single USB C port for power and DP signals.
This is one of the most simple smart mirrors I've seen .. I've done one with a Raspberry Pi, but I think a Chromecast would be even better because it is less fiddley .. Very good stuff ..
The tools you need will depend on what you wish to do. Lowes sales a basic home kit, pliers, hammer, tape, screwdrivers, and bit set. I bought both my kids one a few years ago and they love them. Or if you're going to do more work that involves moulding of wood like using a router I recommend a router on amazon called the Katsu palm router. It's literally a rebrand of the makita palm router, meaning all the internals of it and build quality is the exact same that you can expect from makita and it only costs £35.99
Yes, also superglue isn't waterproof (at least not ordinary superglue) and will deteriorate. Should really use specific glues and sealants for the materials being bonded.

This is stunning. I'd argue, even more so than some of the other awesome things you've built. Just a question though, is it okay to leave an exposed PCB and/or components like a chromecast in a room full of steam?
You could spray it with conformal coating. It's like $20 a can and people use it to waterproof drones all the time. I'm kinda surprised he didn't do that.
the fact that i always had 220v outlets plus electornica on while showering, lets me know its even completely safe to use resistors as a demister factor. before you say im ignorant and dangerous, no, condensation will never be enough to make droplets or puddles inside sockets or electronics
Love it.... at the Grand Floridian they have smart mirrors in the DVC rooms. Ever since then I have wanted to make one. I have been holding on to my original surface with the idea of using this or have another screen that is not touch screen that is much larger but extremely thin led. Was thinking tv/ framed mirror in the bedroom. Great inspiration
6:40 electricity in the bathroom? Meanwhile in america we like "yeah this is a plug so I can bring my TV in the shower with me. And this is my other plug so I can charge my phone and watch videos in the shower. And my shower head is also a speaker".
In all countries there are plugs in the bathrooms. After all, you have lights in there, people use them to power up fans, or shave or whatever. Not just the US. DIY perks is just implying that if you fk something up, given your diy skills, you wont be shocked with 110 or 220 volts and die on the spot. Worst that can happen is ull burn a board or two.
I mean, I've built a Smart Home of my own, on my own, & I'm always looking to add more stuff to it (like this one). But somehow watching videos while shaving doesn't seem like a good idea. 🪒🩸 Awesome project nevertheless, well done. 👍🏻
I can't understand why this guy has so many dislikes. He's incredibly intelligent, handsome and personable. Plus articulate. Ah, I get it... ignorance & stupidly with a natural inclination for "hating", make people gravitate towards the dislike button.

I love your work, and watched pretty much all of your videos, from wall mounted pc’s to high power portable LED flashlights. I’ve recently got into raspberry pi’s and arduinos. Wow. This is definitely the most elaborate smart mirror I've seen so far. I do think using the Chromecast is brilliant. Most people use a Raspberry Pi. And that paint job! I thought he was holding a metal or plastic frame at first. Now I just have to convince the wife to let me get rid of the medicine cabinet...
@@rayproductionsbackupchanne3862 Right, you could have the medicine cabinet be behind the screen, which makes it a piece of cake, although this mirror isn't slim to begin with, and adding a medicine cabinet would make it even thicker. Defenitely do-able though.
(Sorry about my English, I’m from Brazil..) i actually made it and it looks awesome.. I don’t have any tools to work with wood tho, so I payed someone to tho the work for me and I just paint with oil painting.. instead of an old laptop monitor I just remove the body of an old 17’ monitor with dvi and take of the metal of the display (the metal that stays around the glass and the backlight) and it makes the screen I bit lighter.. I wasn’t planning to get it expensive so I actually don’t have anything to plug everything.. but it’s easy and I really think it easier with the monitor.. it’s a good project guys! The window isn’t expensive either...
I would love to see a tool recommendation video. Some may say that only a bad workman blames his tools, but I can tell you that using a handheld jigsaw or metal saw to cut out a bunch of long holes is annyoing as hell. The amount of choices and brands really can make upgrading difficult. I recently bought a rotary tool and ended up not buying a Dremel, since their quality has apparently dropped considerably in the last few years.
For widening the holes in the frame: Just measure the depth of the treated inserts, measure this on your drill and put a piece of tape on the drill. You will never go too deep. As always, this was another very nice project.
More speakers does not provide louder or fuller sound. It merely provides sound coverage. These speakers wouldn't do much for quality or coverage considering they are not pointed at the user's ears and that they are mounted 180 degrees from eachother.
I wouldn't do a version of this that needs to recycle hot water every time it's used during a shower or after a shower. I think there are other ways that don't involve recycling water or high powered heating elements.
Just one note/recommendation: Maybe use something other than mdf (solid wood, aluminum) for a bathroom mirror. Mdf that gets even slightly damp will over time bend, fall apart, and any paint on top will peel off. I know this from experience of having mdf cupboards in my bathroom 🤷♂️
Some brilliant ideas in this video, he makes it look so easy! I wouldn't bother with the water heating, just leave the window open.. Many thanks for the inspiration!
"... and all you need is power... please see my other video on how to build a nuclear reactor in the basement". Seriously, I love this guy, his projects are the bomb
I have seen all your videos multiple times I love them, I would love if you did a how to series, and in.this 8 part series for example you teach proper use of all tools, blueprints, terminology, electrical awareness and basic fundamentals of Motherboards , led etc I would love that !!!!!
having to attach a plug to your tap and fill the mirror with hot water every time you use it seems like quite a bit more effort than just periodically applying an anti-fog coating like they sell for car windshields. I also feel like you could make it a great deal thinner by not facing those speakers sideways and instead have them either bounce sound off the wall or transmit it through the glass
This guy is crazy... why can''t factory think of what you think... All things you made is always been my dream of. I wish you could made things available in Amazon

I think the laptop screen needs 12 volts.
Do you mean taking 5v directly from the power bank? If so, I have that same power bank and you can't output 12v and 5v from it at the same time. I've tried.
shreyas thats true (well my board does have it, 5 volt 2 amps and it works great.

Id love to see a tool recommendation vid or just more vids in general! You are one of my favorite youtube channels so keep it going😊
Yass! Cheap, essential tools ftw
The tools you need will depend on what you wish to do.
Lowes sales a basic home kit, pliers, hammer, tape, screwdrivers, and bit set. I bought both my kids one a few years ago and they love them.
Even the boy that all over his face said wtf am I going to do with this, called a month later and thanked me, he uses it all the time.
Or if you're going to do more work that involves moulding of wood like using a router I recommend a router on amazon called the Katsu palm router.
It's literally a rebrand of the makita palm router, meaning all the internals of it and build quality is the exact same that you can expect from makita and it only costs £35.99
I would recommend using rubber glue/vulcaniser since the super glue will not want to compress, and if it does it will (potentially) break the seal.
Yes, also superglue isn't waterproof (at least not ordinary superglue) and will deteriorate. Should really use specific glues and sealants for the materials being bonded.
That's why the seal was at the top. The water won't reach the seal because of the position of the fill and overflow pipe.
@@evilutionltd aha! Had not considered that.
@@evilutionltd The filling nozzles were also superglued in place. That might be ok if you only fill the chamber once, but if using tap water you're going to need to empty and refill at some point unless you want a colony of moulds and micro-organisms in there.
@@ataru4 no water pressure though so there'd be no creep and meniscus pressure would stop water escaping.
It would be better to fill to below the fill points, add a bit of bleach to the water to prevent growth and have a small ceramic heater strip in the water.
"I got this screen from an old laptop." Proceeds to take off brand-new protective film from the screen.
he didnt say the old laptop was used one. I too have few unused pieces of technology stored that are couple of years old due to them being already obsolete.
Maybe he stockpiles old screens and covers them with film to protect them until use or maybe he bought an old screen off ebay and that's how it came
There's another video of his where he talks about how to disassemble a laptop yourself. Otherwise you can buy these old screens on ebay, which is probably what he did here
Yea cause a newer model laptops replacement parts would be more expensive

This is stunning. I'd argue, even more so than some of the other awesome things you've built.
Just a question though, is it okay to leave an exposed PCB and/or components like a chromecast in a room full of steam?
I think the boards aren't a high enough voltage to have electricity flow through any condensation on them
@@no-lifenoah7861 What about rusting the PCB?
@@MaxIronsThird I don't think that the rust would effect the conductivity of the PCB, also gold doesn't corrode

Why not both a medicine cabinet and this. With some clever modifications to this setup you could easily integrate a door
@@rayproductionsbackupchanne3862 Right, you could have the medicine cabinet be behind the screen, which makes it a piece of cake, although this mirror isn't slim to begin with, and adding a medicine cabinet would make it even thicker. Defenitely do-able though.

The mirror is thick because of all the components behind. Just place them under the cabinet OR inside of the cabinet.

As always, this was another very nice project.

use shaving cream to clean/defog your mirror instead of the water system.
More speakers does not provide louder or fuller sound. It merely provides sound coverage. These speakers wouldn't do much for quality or coverage considering they are not pointed at the user's ears and that they are mounted 180 degrees from eachother.

2:30 a weird edit that looks like he drills in himself lol
I wouldn't do a version of this that needs to recycle hot water every time it's used during a shower or after a shower. I think there are other ways that don't involve recycling water or high powered heating elements.
Just one note/recommendation: Maybe use something other than mdf (solid wood, aluminum) for a bathroom mirror. Mdf that gets even slightly damp will over time bend, fall apart, and any paint on top will peel off. I know this from experience of having mdf cupboards in my bathroom 🤷♂️
MDF in bathrooms is not recommended, even if painted.

Nice content, this mirror's been my dream since I saw "A Day Made of Glass", maybe I'll do it some day.
having to attach a plug to your tap and fill the mirror with hot water every time you use it seems like quite a bit more effort than just periodically applying an anti-fog coating like they sell for car windshields.
I also feel like you could make it a great deal thinner by not facing those speakers sideways and instead have them either bounce sound off the wall or transmit it through the glass
This guy is crazy... why can''t factory think of what you think... All things you made is always been my dream of. I wish you could made things available in Amazon
"The mirror is always filled up with water" Yeah, that's fine and dandy until you get algae growth and the whole thing begins to reek
You won't be getting algae, since this thing will leak in like a week.
@@lazar2175 If you think a week is not enough time for algae to develop it is because you don't have an aquarium ;). Algae will grow, and it even doesn't need it to be full of water, just a very humid environment (exactly what we have here).
@@almarma Oh boy i have a aquarium, but algae have 0% chance of developing here.
First off, the tap water is mostly sterile due to dubious amounts of chlorine in it. This means very little to no starting ground for algae.
Second off, the algae needs light, and this doesn't provide any light to the water.
Also third, my comment was supposed to be a joke and not taken seriously.
@@lazar2175 Tap water is not chlorinated in Europe
@@lazar2175 Maybe with a lot of chlorine you could get less or no algae at all, but not everybody has that amount of it in tap water.
