Those shelves turned out so good, with objectively simple, but genius engineering. The highlighting system is also super useful, although I doubt anyone else would really have this problem. Maybe you should do a Collab with mkbhd too, they have a metric ton of review phones too. Great Collab, amazing to see.
I think that'd be awesome as well! One thing tho that I think will important to factor in os that Marques lives in the US, not the UK or near. Anyway, it will be incredible if they can pull that off!
To be fair, it would be simple to locate phones even without the lighting system. It's the database that really matters, as the shelf number and number across could be displayed onscreen & physically labelled.

i just wanted to see one extra thing: something related to fire hazard, there is a lot of Li-Li batteries stocked together and not even a single smoke detector, plus it is all made of wood
@@barrieshepherd7694 Oh, yeah. True. I completely forgot about that part, since I have a 10 year old Sony phone that still works like a charm and never even thought about the need to replace the battery as it's still holding it's charge really well.

Never thought of watching these two most talented people that I love watching will gonna collaborate one day , very unexpected but extremely pleased for 💛
This is really AWERSOME. One more thing could be a little sensor to detect if there is a phone placed in every clip. This would help the database store better real time info and cound offer a nice interface over the shelfs status. Besides this little consideration, it is an absolute beast of a project
the sensor wouldn't be able to spot the phone name/type so in the end they would still need to log the data in the database at which point you might as well log the clip location manually.
@@jamalabdisalam8578 you could just just do it with something like those magnet cables. You "only" would have to route one of those to every slot, and have the respective adapter thing in every phone. Attatch all of that to a (a little bit more powerful) server and you can look up which phone is connected to which usb port = slot
Hmm.. I wonder if he could come up with something like points of Ionisation to promote airflow away from the shelf or to somehow stop dust settling in that area.. Something similar to how Indoor Ionisers can help with Dust Might be an interesting project in itself!
Great design! my only concern with this is the property of PLA to "creep" under pressure over time. When used as a spring, PLA will tend to relax into the forced shape and stop providing any tension at all. I'm not sure what plastic you used, but if its PLA this is a possibility
@@Ratsnake All for nothing may be a bit extreme. As long as he didn't glue them in, all he'd need to do is give Arun a box of spares to use as needed. Or if it became too problematic, he could always choose a different filament to print replacements on.
@@jordyv.703 Probably doesn't even need to do that - the plastic will creep, but only to the point there is very little spring tension so as long as the same phone goes back in its own slot every time it doesn't matter it will grip well enough to hold that phone (or a thicker one - as its not holding the weight of the phone at all, just providing a slot the correct width for the phone). A few replacement springs over the years as they fail to do the job on the new phones cycling in isn't a hardship, plus a bit of hot water and you can reshape the pla spring to again provide more spring if as needed. p.s I do agree though PLA is not the best choice for this use case, especially if you expect the shelf contents to be very dynamically changing.
@@foldionepapyrus3441 the springs are pushing the phones upright. If they get weak, the phones will start standing slanted. It's still gonna work, but it's gonna look bad. But yeah, I didn't think about just reshaping it with some heat.
@@tonieprawda In front of what, the phone shelf? If so, I would imagine a one-sided mirror glass as a display panel for the shelf so that it makes the mirror from behind have a infinity room effect on the phones while still being see-through on the other side of the display.

might even be able to pull some of the genre info from existing databases.
9:47 LOVE that video glitch!!!
This is the collab we needed! Great British UA-camrs who don't rely on being a 'whacky character' who's videos I can watch for hours.
The LED phone selection is exactly the same idea I wanted to implement for highlighting the hardware in my shop! Amazing work as always, thanks for sharing!
Found you when I wanted to create diy sound panels for my studio, but this video just earned you a sub! I'm a fan! 💡🙌
@@rafaelbordignon271 I know... If Matt ever decides to go on vacation in the US though... 👀🤞
To be fair, it would be simple to locate phones even without the lighting system. It's the database that really matters, as the shelf number and number across could be displayed onscreen & physically labelled.
As always, never a moment of disappointment in craftsmanship and creativity. Wonderful work, like something seen in a movie or a piece of art.
it is a piece of art.
This is ingenious to say the least!! Pulled out all of the ideas in your grey matter mate.
Thie indexing system is bloody clever as well. Love it 🖖🤤
With amazing projects like this you've given me over the years I've been watching you the inspiration and motivation to start DIYing my environment. Now I'm making a DIY desk, planning on making a scratch-built PC case, speaker stands and plan to get a 3D printer.
Thank you for the inspiration and motivation! Looking forward to see more amazing projects and learn more from you.
That's really amazing to hear :D keep on improving and who knows, maybe you'll have your own channel with DIYs too one day haha
Also you got some taste with your channel subscriptions 👌🏻
can we just appreciate that matt got an upgraded printer after all these years
Man, this was just AMAZING !
Found your channel while searching for What to do with my old laptop; and when I saw you collabed with Arun, I was like : Damn, I gotta watch this thing right now !!!
And this project was really one of a kind and extremely impressive. Kudos to the team, Keep going :)
DAMN! I was halfway through and thought these shelves were super neat, and then you mentioned the phone identification system with the lights.....mind blown. And I still have half the video left to watch 😂
Never in my life would I have guessed to see two of my favorite youtubers collab with each other. Awesome video Matt!
Hey Matt, I've actually designed a similar setup with LEDs Matrices for an inventory management system of electronic components. Great project mate!
Why do people like leds on everything 😭 nothing drives me nuts like led lights.
Worse when they pulsate I feel like dying.
@@penofinspiration Not everyone likes LEDs, I like pleasant warmer colors or static single color
@@csmckzhvn
Every streamer or blogger video that i come across, there is always fairy lights on the wall or pc monitors.
Christmas time is the worst time for me to be alive😭
@@penofinspiration well in this particular case they used LEDs practically. Also they didn't have any other choice than LEDs, cuz the shelf should show the phone's place.
Also, epilepsy?
@@user-bc1qq7ux4s thanks mate for pointing that out. Btw, if you guys don't like RGB LEDs (pulse or not), why watch DiY Perks?
this is the dream! having such cool and unique projects as an engineer is, at least for me, the best case scenario. congrats on such an amazing project and the incredible results! and particularly well polished final design!
I love that you all too turns at peeling the film, also love the genuine excitement at what you made
That is actually crazy. I'd feel like a kid on Christmas having something as useful and awesome as that
Oh my god…
The two Brits with the best voices on UA-cam have colab’d!
This is like Keith David and James Earl Jones doing an interview with Sam Elliot and Morgan Freeman. Just… audible overload.
Jokes aside, these channels have the best audio quality, best hosts, best production value for a small scale operation and they’re finally working together! Awesome!
These guys should narrate audiobooks..... soothing voice :)
Pretty sure the phone man is Indian
@@JohnSmith-me4ik He’s from Britain. His ancestral genealogy doesn’t mean anything in this context, when discussing his localized accent.
Lots of people descended from other places, but identity as where they live and are a citizen.

Yes
Lol
Just a joke.
It has been years since I even opened stack overflow 😂
Two of the smoothest satisfying voices on UA-cam
Hands down god mighty video! Two of my favorite youtubers within their respective field, wow. The ultimate collab duo!!! That is some next level work and really good amount of hours... I hope Arun paid you well!
That's beyond diy.... This is complete profesonalism to its highest standards.... The ingenuity and crasftmensship is on another level
Well done....
That lump in the wall at 6:15 could be an electrical power outlet box that was possibly covered by drywall wallboard. I didn’t notice any other receptacles on that wall. Just a thought. Nice build!
or just a lot of drywall mud where the two drywall plates meet
Amazing work! Thanks for sharing. The next issue to takle will be how to dust this whole thing... when not in use, I would cover it with a curtain or some other solution to keep the dust away, but it is a really mild issue to deal either way compared to how this project turned out.
Great work!
Hey Matt, can you share the 3D printed clip file? I kindda have a similar problem and I would like to do something like this :)
Install fusion 360 and make it yourself.
Let me know if you need help with programming the LED selector, when you make it.
@@Mouamle I have a similar project coming up with LED's, is there a possibility you could help me?
@@Rackhage sure, email me and i'll help you.
@@Mouamle what's your mail? I'll hit you up!
What an amazing project! I cannot imagine nobody ever thought of this before. Finally there is a way to organise my three smart phones...
i just wanted to see one extra thing: something related to fire hazard, there is a lot of Li-Li batteries stocked together and not even a single smoke detector, plus it is all made of wood
What if the phones have their batteries removed? >:P
@@LordDragox412 Very few phones let you remove the batteries these days - been like it for 4 or 5 years.
@@barrieshepherd7694 Oh, yeah. True. I completely forgot about that part, since I have a 10 year old Sony phone that still works like a charm and never even thought about the need to replace the battery as it's still holding it's charge really well.
This is So cool man Watch both ur channels for years now. luv the work keep doing it. BlessUp
The best part about this build is that it can be adapted to any sort of collection that involves items of a relatively set size such as vintage game cartridges or other electronics.
We never expected this collab to happen, but we welcome it anyway
Can you make an extra shelf for sale ? 😂

This is what I would call a perfect design and engineering project; simple yet elegant with a touch of flare and functionality. 10/10
Such a big built and it is already half full. Those facts are proof of DIY perks and Mr.Whostheboss trayectory.
The work with lights and the database is awesome.
This is very very impressive. Both on the design and the fabrication sides. Very neat ideas.
Amazing! my only "criticism" is that there should have been a glass door to cover, thats is gonna get dusty fast
I had the same though. Those slots will collect every dirt they can get. Should be not such a big problem to add some this glas to the front.
Hmm.. I wonder if he could come up with something like points of Ionisation to promote airflow away from the shelf or to somehow stop dust settling in that area.. Something similar to how Indoor Ionisers can help with Dust
Might be an interesting project in itself!
He will just cover it with a cotton sheet when until its not in use...
That sorting system is sooo cool! 🤯 Also imagine the cost of all those phones combined 🤯
Great design! my only concern with this is the property of PLA to "creep" under pressure over time. When used as a spring, PLA will tend to relax into the forced shape and stop providing any tension at all. I'm not sure what plastic you used, but if its PLA this is a possibility
That is exactly what my first thought was. I have had that happen to me. It's a bummer that all this work will probably be for nothing.
@@Ratsnake All for nothing may be a bit extreme. As long as he didn't glue them in, all he'd need to do is give Arun a box of spares to use as needed. Or if it became too problematic, he could always choose a different filament to print replacements on.
@@Ratsnake All for nothing? he just needs to print new ones in a better material if they actually are PLA.
Thank you so much Matt. This build was *SPECTACULAR!*
"Stay tuned for Part 2 where we'll be creating a motorised duster."
Ah yes, DIY-ing a roomba.
I was thinking there will be some glass in front
@@tonieprawda In front of what, the phone shelf? If so, I would imagine a one-sided mirror glass as a display panel for the shelf so that it makes the mirror from behind have a infinity room effect on the phones while still being see-through on the other side of the display.
That was absolutely amazing! Seriously the number of trials and tests before you put that altogether must of been monstrous! RESPECT!!
Honestly, considering there exists similar kinds of things for video cards, it's strange how a ready-made modular solution doesn't already exist on the market 👀
Very cool
I would guess there are solutions in China, since phone farms are a thing in Asia. But probably not intended to take them off but rather power them.
