I don’t understand why it’s seen as embarrassing for someone to pull out their “dumb phone” honestly. If they’re around my age or younger, I look at that and think “Wow. Going against the system. Pretty cool.”
Personally, I have never found a reason to buy a smartphone. Why? I have the internet on my computer and why should I pay for having it on a mobile phone with an unpractical, small display? Why is it for? Leaving aside that I would have to charge it every day like an idiot. (Only because of this reason, buying a smartphone would be like a journey to prehistoric times for me.) People buy it mainly to show off in front of others and because they have no deeper interests to fill their lives with. I just bought Nokia 2660 and it seems to be the best purchase of my life. It has everything I need (even the internet, which I can use in emergency situations, for example when I need to know the departure times of trains and buses) and the battery lasts about 20 days. It has a low-quality camera but I don't need it anyway because I have a Sony camera with 20x zoom.
@@cartouche7441 I loved reading that you're so right. I'm going to replace my S21 with my first-ever brick phone that I got when I was 10. I'm about to turn 21. It has a torch, no camera, and I'll be paying less than a quarter of what I'm paying a month now for my phone plan. I look forward to enjoying the small things in life.
well, it's an "american thing" to feel embarrassed if you pull out a flip phone or your text messages are green. haven'tg noticed tghat in my country or other EU countries. noone uses imessage, they use more whatsapp or viber and that's it. noone gives a shit what phone you are pulling from your pocket.
I just got my dumbphone two days ago! I'm super excited. It was a small change because I'd already gotten rid of all social media and I only needed a phone that had the features I needed (GPS, calendar, etc). I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but I'm very excited to be "used to" the dumbphone. Nokia 2760 btw. $20 and has everything you need, highly recommend
I quit the smartphone two months ago with a dumb phone and I say that it has been the best decision I have made. No more stress and I feel more productive and get more quality sleep and the best part is that I get to spend valuable time with my family. People look at me like if I was from another planet when I pull my dumb phone but who cares..
I've been using an old Nokia 2720-a as my daily driver for about a year and it has honestly improved my attention span and productivity wildly. You can still undo boredom with a quick snake round (my highscore is 528 beat if you can) and it has 10 mb of memory which means i can fit a song in there and it has built-in radio it's great! Only issue i've had is that "society" expects you to have a smartphone by now and in school for example they wanted us to install an app to do an activity and I had to explain to the teacher that I was using a 2009 nugget
@@rob2662 I mean it's serviceable, definetly not ideal but you can use it and it has plenty of shortcuts that'll make it better as you get experience with it
@@rob2662 Kai OS is not worth it for the price. At this point, Android Go which is a slower and stripped down Android designed to run on lower hardwares is just a better alternative
I'm 55 years old and remember times before the internet and phones. I managed to travel, study and work without any hassle. I have a smartphone and laptop for my job, but use a Nokia dumb phone the rest of the time. My only priority was call quality. A Nokia 8000 has 4g calling and is excellent 👍
I have to be honest I don’t know some of the technical specifics you mentioned but that’s interesting about flip phones. People love them because they are cool to use. WhatsApp is so good compared to normal text and phone calls your right but I was able to get by using it
@@DarbyWilcockusing a laptop with a feature phone is no different from using a smartphone alone. If people are so distracted by their smartphones, simply use it at night and turn the blue light filter which helps it's user fall asleep much easier, I tried this to reduce the use of my smartphone and......it actually works
Nice good for you dude and yeah it gives me hope to especially with how many people I have heard who have been trying this and feeling so much better for it like you and I 👍🏻
Hahaha thats amazing 😂. It sounds like I was directly speaking to you lol. Thank you for watching, I hope you enjoy my other videos and whats coming soon 👍🏻
I accidently broke my iPad around 4 months ago and I haven't got it repaired yet. I didn't realise until I broke it how much I was using it and how much time I was wasting! I've been so much more productive and happy since not using it. I have a really cheap phone so had pretty much everything on my iPad anyway. Great video Darby 😁
Thank you for watching Amy. You and I were put in the same position, if it wasn't for my phone breaking I would never have realised that I didn't 'need' my smart phone. The only problem is it's a shame it takes being forced into the situation to realise how life without it isn't bad.
As someone who didn't have a smartphone until 3G shutdown forced my hand in the end of 2021 (and who switched to a smart phone with a flip phone factor a few days later), hearing a person talk about how phones are vital to banking and what do if you're bored without a smartphone is just so *wild* to me. I suppose it's hard to miss what you don't have. As for the embarrassment of having a flip phone in public - I had my old flip phone so long that it sort of went from an outdated relic to a novelty. And, of course, my current flip phone is definitely a novelty. Seeing people's eyes go wide when I show them that I have Instagram and Spotify on a flip phone is still fun. So is watching people watching me tweet via a T9 keypad.
Wow, good for you man, I've heard a few peoples stories about using these basic phones for so long. Flip phones definitely have a cool novelty factor to them. It's impressive that you still manage to do things you can do on smartphones on a flip phone.
This is why you *MUST* get a "dumb" phone that supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE). With many carriers turning off CDMA and GSM in favor of going all LTE, many older "dumb" phones may not work anymore on the cellphone network you use.
@@DarbyWilcock I like flip phones in the "Departed". Anyway, as a child I had different nokia, sony ericsson and siemens mobile phones, which are still cool and so divert in comparison to modern shovel-like smartphones. I have a small collection of them in mint condition, couple of them I use next to my smartphone (last year I bought iphone SE) since 2014.
There's no such thing as the embarrassment of using a classic phone in public. Using it doesn't matter! What matters is how confident you are about it! If you carry a classic phone with confidence and you don't care about how the rest are looking at you, some might grow an admiration for this and get curious about your lifestyle.
Yes that could happen but the fact is we do get embarrassed about a lot of things, especially depending on your culture. The reason why people are switching to classic phones is not because they look cool and want to be seen with them. Most people don’t want to stand out and get funny looks from people because they are not confident people.
Something important to remember is that it doesn't have to be one way or the other, as you can use a smartphone and not also 'be used by it'; you can have a thought and not have it affect you, or think a thought and not feel the need to act on it, or have the ability to do something but not feel that you must do it; this is called mindfulness. We can have this amazing and useful technology, and at the same time have it not be to our detriment that we use it. Using a dumbphone is probably the best way to get to the point where using a smartphone will no longer be to your detriment.
You are completely right but mindfulness is a difficult practice that takes a lot of determination and patience what unfortunately is hard to come by and a lot of what we do on our phones conditions us to make us less mindful. Mindfulness is something I’m trying to incorporate more to my life. 👍🏻
That doesn't work. The will power we have, is very limited. Besides, this smartphone thing is becoming more addictive day by day. You need to throw them. We don't NEED it as he said in the video. Nice video by the way.
I am very surprised to find more people doing this. I've been using my old Sony Ericsson Walkman W995 for several months now and I'm quite satisfied with the results: I feel like I waste less time on useless things and concentrate more. I chose the Sony Walkman because I love listening to music in my daily life. Excellent video! Congratulations!
@@DarbyWilcockthere's something worth mentioning, if a feature phone has Bluetooth a2dp, a shenanigan found on the totally of new smartphones these days, then carrying a smartphone is not necessary. Get a Nokia 106 4g, a pair of earbuds and a micro SD card loaded with mp3 tracks, that's all
I find carrying a ridiculously out of date smartphone (Windows Phone, android 2.3 etc) actually works kinda well. No working store or online services, yet you still have a camera and a nice to use interface for the times you do need to make a call or send a text. Makes a somewhat nice balance if you don't want to go full basic!
How else other than tv? 😢We really need tech guys to get together and go against the big companies for us. Make us the new low tech but useful radio band width phones.
While I applaud those who are able to live in the modern app-centric world without a smartphone, I think a smarter and more realistic solution would be to remove social media, streaming, games and other non-essential apps and turn off notifications for all remaining apps except phone and your default messaging app. This is what I've done and it's been amazing. I only get notified for phone calls and messages. Not even email. My iPhone is now a tool and no longer an entertainment device. If I need directions, I've got a maps app. If I need to access my money, I've got a banking app. If I want to watch a video, play a game or check my socials, I'll need my iPad. My iPhone doesn't do that anymore.
Hmm--I wonder has Apple or Google considered adding a setting in iOS and Android so the phone works more or less like a feature phone except for one app for messaging. That way, you get the benefits of a feature phone but with an optional settings change, you still have access to other apps installed on your phone.
I think that the main problem with a smartphone is the screen. 10-15 years ago when smartphone displays were 3'-4' the screen on time was way less than it's today. Because for more "important" tasks everybody used a laptop or a TV (sending important e-mails with a 3inch screen isn't a smart choice; or watching a movie etc). So, if a company could make a "dumb" phone with a small screen, physical keyboard, but with android and all the apps that make life easier (like parking app or banking, whatsapp etc) then I would have no problem using it as my main phone. Right now, even if I would want to I couldn't, because these apps are integrated in our personal or work life.
I do the following to be on my phone less: In all situations where I'm usually bored without my phone, I pull out a cheap 7 inch tablet that I bought which has no internet connection and no useful apps except a PDF reader and loads of technical books. No fiction or such, just "Learn C++ in 6 weeks" or "Linux Kernel Programming", etc and I read one of those. Always makes me feel good afterwards because I feel like I was productive (and didn't trigger my social anxiety by just looking around on the train or bus and thinking to myself that everybody else surely thinks I'm weird because I don't look at a screen.).^^
Great that you found what we have known as our lives. I am 62 years of age and grew up without computers, without portable telephones. I have known black-and-white television, yeah, TV was around. Radio was mid-wavelength and USW. We had musicassettes and 8-mm. film wind-up movie cameras. When I jobbed for some money as a cashier at a little supermarket I had every price in my head. I knew the phone numbers of dozens of people by heart. To call someone I dropped coins into a booth phone where there were also printed directories. My first cellphone I bought in 2008, a Nokia 1208. I should love to still be able to use it but as much as I know these models can’t be upgraded to 4G or 5G. I’m a mechanic and repair mechanical things. That’s satisfying. I pity the fools who fear that the end is nigh should their smartphone quit functioning. What a poor world is this? I find it wonderful that you got to this point.
Due to my work specifics, I mostly need to have a smartphone, but I have never abandoned dumbphones and have a SIM specifically just for talking. Moreover, I have another SIM in a card-shaped mini phone in my wallet serving purely as a backup, it has a hardware killswitch so I don't worry about the battery self-discharging and getting damaged over time when not in use. Regarding the "internet" SIM, I think my dumbest decision was to migrate to eSIM. It heavily limited the amount of devices I can use that number on, and of course ruled out all dumbphones currently in existence. So, this weekend I'm migrating that number too back to a physical SIM. Time to regain the freedom of choice.
I just got a Nokia 2720 V Flip yesterday and let me say this: way less bloatware than I thought. I have heard of lots of bloatware from KaiOS but this basic phone is nearly perfect! See you on the journey!
This is somewhat the decision or change that I want to do at some point of my life. This one is like those things you KNOW will be good for you (like eating healthy, i.e.), altough not easy, but you are too afraid or lazy to actually do it lol.
It's sad how smartphones have affected people, the addiction to instant validation and responses is seriously damaging. There have been reports of kids harming themselves because they didn't get "likes" and attention. Whenever i see videos like this it confirms my decision to never get a smartphone, some people are amazed and confused about how i live without one. I have a "dumb" phone, that's enough for me, i really only use it to play music anyway. Don't be scared of boredom, it stimulates creativity and imagination.
Just ordered a Nokia 225 4G to replace my iPhone 14 Pro. Going for 1mo using only the Nokia at first (and maybe an old school iPod for music). We'll see where things go from there! Great video! Cheers!
I quit social media at the end of 2020 and I do not miss them a bit. No, it wasn't difficult! One day I said to myself "That's it!" and that's what it was. I still own my smartphone for its camera, messages and UA-cam! No, I don't take pictures to show them to other people, I take pictures for myself, to remember the places I have visited. I am a lot less angry than I used to be and I feel better now that noone knows what I do in my life! That social media trend was stupid in the first place and I'm happy to be past them!!
Great video. I appreciate the positive spin you took on this idea. I feel like a lot of content about dumb phones & stuff have fear mongering & whatnot
Video made me laugh… missus is always moaning at me that I either don’t have the phone with me or that it’s on silent so I don’t see any notifications. Phone is essentially just that a phone and yes I do take it with me if I go on a hike (slips and trips can happen to anyone), but as you say it’s just a tool and like any tool you should only use it when you need it. For fun I watched a few old clips on UA-cam from the 1980’s. Try seeing who is using a phone on them.. pretty much no one as they didn’t exist, but somehow life still went on!
This is a great video and it really did make me think! I quit social media a few years back and it made me feel "free", but I started using it again for business reasons and now I'm using it way too often! I keep telling myself I need to have my phone to be able to check email/social media etc for my business or I watch UA-cam/Netflix etc in the background on the phone when I'm doing other things like cleaning and all of those things are not necessary and add extra noise to my life... but I also read ebooks on the Kindle app or listen to audiobooks through Audible and podcasts/music through Spotify when driving/working out - so my question is, what do you do when you're driving/working out? Do you still listen to podcasts/music somehow? I'm considering "dumbing down my smartphone" instead, by removing all social media/UA-cam/Netflix but keeping the educational apps like Kindle, Spotify, and Audible - but then I will always have the distraction/option of downloading everything again at the touch of a button Now that I'm typing this out, I definitely realise that I have an addiction to my phone haha
Haha 😂. It's funny when we type things out we realise things about ourselves. It's definitely worth asking yourself "do I need social media on my phone for business or can I just use it on the laptop etc." Smartphones are hugely convenient so we always have a ton of excuses ready if we do ever think about quitting. I've gone back to using the radio and cds in the car, don't get me wrong I would love to listen to audiobooks or podcasts and I occasionally ask my wife to borrow her phone for drives and runs but most of the time I have nothing. You can just download everything again but I still do think dumbing down our smartphones is the best and first step all of us can take to get the benefits I talk about in this video. Thanks for watching Kirsty.
@@DarbyWilcock yeah you're right about using the computer for social media/business I think I'll delete all the social media apps and games that aren't necessary and keep the books/podcast/bank apps and see how I go with that! Your videos deserve a lot more attention by the way! They would be helpful for a lot of people 😊
@Kirsty Rebecca Fine Art regarding music, podcasts, audiobooks, UA-cam, etc, I think the big thing is how you use them. You could just turn on a radio or play a CD, but if that isn't in any practical way different to how you listen to your phone, it doesn't matter. If you are constantly skipping tracks, searching for next video, or otherwise constantly actively interacting with your phone, you might look for more restrictive device for the job. There is a reason analog music is also getting a resurgence. Talked to someone who was passionate about music and spend hours listening to it, but skipped 80% of the songs after second chorus.
Ive just bought a Nokia 8210 (from 2000!) that still works in the uk until around 2033 when they turn 2G off here. And I've got a mighty 3 that i can sync with smart phone for music. My intention isnt to get rid of my smartphone. I need banking apps, 2fa and other stuff. But thats rare. Day to day I'll be using a basic phone and my music device. Notes into a notepad in my pocket. And my fuji camera when i want it. Ive realised that life when i was 15 was much simpler and arguably more enjoyable. SmartPhones aren't the issue - its our dependance on them really. I have GPS in my car, and i have music. Its all i need.
I use my smartphone as a tool. It's my music player and offline navigation system. I have Whatsapp, but no mobile internet. So messages have to wait to be read until I'm at home. I think it's antisocial to read and answer messages while checking out at the supermarket or riding a bike. The messages can wait. If it would be urgent, people would call you.
Actually, the so-called "dumb phone" is becoming the new smart phone. Smart, right? What's dumb is being controlled by a device in your pocket. And we don't need a parking app, just use your recorder app to say where you parked.
My only problem with going back to a dumb phone is I use Amazon and on line purchases. That doesn’t mean I have to use social media which is the real stressor.
Hello, I have a smartphone and I also have a phone, what you call Dumbphone. I always use the Dumbphone on the street. I don't like using phones. At home I use a desktop computer and it is for work. And I've always done it. I grew up in the era when there were no telephones. For me, on the other hand, it is difficult for me to use smartphones, because they absorb your time and damage your eyesight considerably. For all those things I don't like them. It's so nice to go outside and just look at the dumbphone to see the time or use it to listen to music. When I have to wait for someone, I bring a music player and I start listening to music. And my player is very small, it uses a mini memory card. I'm glad that you no longer use your smartphone because you will get more out of your life in real time and outside.
Haha yes, I cut it all off a couple of weeks ago, it was getting a bit impractical so I just went for it. Maybe just tell yourself you will try it out for 1 day and see how you get on. Best thing to do is once you switch, move your smart phone to somehwhere hard to reach.
Walking and calling with a dumb phone also catch their attention, cause you barely see it. I miss these days, and I'm thinking. I might get 1 for work, it will also keep me away from social media. For work i only need, call, text and flashlight.
Dude, thank you so much for making this video! I really appreciate the insights that you shared--like really. Could you shoot me a link to the phone you bought?
There are a few important action people have to do. One. Remove their social media accounts. Two. Delete the apps on your phone. (Because social media is a killer. Also on webbrowser or other devices. So…unsubscribe first!) Overall a smartphone with just tool apps like navigation and banking is a incredibly handy device. It are the extra apps that make it addictive. Go outside. Into the sunlight. Breathe. Talk to people. Connect. Enjoy.
It is not the smartphone that is the problem but what apps you install on it. I remember the days when we only had landlines or GSM's for calling and texting. In general I was better off: but an app for parking, the banking app, etcetera. Sometimes I need to install something on my phone to connect to the broker's website where I buy and sell shares and options. I hate my phone spying on me.
Nice, even though UA-cam is (kind of) a social media I think its very different and is more beneficial then harmful, but it does completely depend on how you use it.
I just love that the young 'uns are falling in love with dumbphones. I spent half my life without any kind of cell phone and when I finally did get one, it was a barebones Nokia 5120 that couldn't even send texts. Could receive them, just not send and I used to pay for a carrier add-on that would text me the weather report every morning 😅I remember those mall kiosks that sold a bunch of different snap covers for Nokias, some even sold LED mods so you could change out your pea-green backlight to pink or blue. When I upgraded to a Nokia 3390, I had a flashing keypad mod that would trigger whenever I got a text or call. After that I had a Nokia 5125 with pink backlighting and a blue flashing Hello Kitty antenna. Those were the days lol. Smartphones weren't even a thing until I was in my mid-20s, I think going so long only having a PHONE phone kind of set my usage habits in stone so I don't really struggle with smartphone addiction. I have an iPhone 14 pro but I still prefer my computer for videos and I don't use any social media. I admit I'm extremely addicted to podcasts but that, the notes app, and always having a good camera on me are really the only things that keep me on a smartphone. But omg I'd sooooo ditch my iPhone in a nanosecond for a pink RAZR though. That was THE coolest phone ever, I'd be totally happy to lug around a notebook, camera, iPod, etc again if I could have a working pink RAZR.
Haha that’s funny. I would love to see everyone carry a backpack full of stuff that we now all have on our phones as convenient apps (music, notes, camera etc) that would be funny. I agree it’s nice to see people are interested in these things and it’s really surprised me 😊
I was born in the 80s , and I have to say life was so much better before smartphones . I remember getting my first phone back in 1999, and have watched it all evolve and had numerous phones , I too would love a pink Motorola RAZR phone again, also the smaller thinner Motorola krzr was also a great phone. I wish more than anything that today's limited amount of dumbphones were built to the same quality as they were many years ago
the only issue i had with using my old blackberry (basically a dumbphone now) is the lack of uber :( since I'm a student and don't have a car, having the app is basically a necessity for my transport. So the best way for me was literally delete every app on my iPhone except Uber and Google Maps and banking.
I’ve already deleted most of the apps off my smartphone. I only have essentials apps that are required.. I use a Nokia 6300 4g as my daily phone. I have all my distractions apps on my tablet. Whenever I do bring my smartphone with me it’s only for business and meetings. I haven’t been on social media for months now and I’m adapting to it. I spend more time exercising and enjoying the outdoors 😀😀😀😎😎😎
I’ve found that the IPhone SE 3 is a good choice for those needing to stay connected but not be a smart phone prisoner. You get a decent camera, access to the Apple ecosystem system including FaceTime and can install any app that’s needed. It’s small and light so easy to carry. It’s got 5G so I can create a hotspot if I need to. What I don’t get is a beautiful big screen that makes it easy to spend hours on my phone. I make it a point just not to install social media apps on my phone and that works for me. Generally my phone spends most of the day in my pocket or on my desk.
I used home phones for like 3 Year and I’m waiting for my new dumb phone to arrive this summer. I loved having a home phone but it made traveling really hard and they do take up a large amount of space.
I'm not addicted to my Moto G Power (2121 version), though I can't say the same about my PC and tablet. I did want a feature phone to use while using my e-bike as the Moto is a bit too long for most of my pant pockets. I can't find one that will run Google Maps fully. My 2 favorite weather apps probably would be ok. I am leaning towards the Unihertz Jelly Star. It is very pocket friendly, though has way more features than I really need and a bit more spendy then I was hoping to find. I just need to be able to run those 3 apps and have WiFi to check store ads in case I forgotten an item or two.
I just read a good tip: Take out the sim card but - Sim in the dumb phone. Done. (If you want to - you can still use your smartphone so etimes for photos, videos and music. Also, you can transform UA-cam songs into mp3 for your smartphone to make a playlist).
Modern feature phones are freaking expensive! I'll need to find some way of getting my ol LG Extravert 2 back up and on the air if I want to get into the dumbphone scene.
There's also the issue of older feature phones are getting useless because carriers are turning off CDMA and GSM digital cellular support in favor of Voice over LTE (VoLTE). VoLTE compliant feature phones are not as cheap as people think.
You can get cheap Nokia 4G phones for around £25 now. They run S30+ rather than the kaios - which is simple but works fine. I have actually been able to use my old Nokia and bought an old Motorola Razer V3 from the early 2000s - here in the UK they aren't turning off the 2G networks until after 2030
I am here from year 2024. I cannot go to a dumb phone is because they do not have banking apps, e-wallets and parking apps. The parking app is essential if we drive in my country. That is the only way to pay for street-side parking. Everything else, I am ok. I put my cellphone into my drawer during working hours. Then I also use power save mode and i only see the absolute essential apps available on the front screen. I have no issues with boredom factor stated in the video. I have my kindle or my journal that is with me at all times.
Rather than be thinking about boredom think about creativity as a motivator. I sometimes forget I have a phone and have forgotten to take it with me, it is amazing how little it rings and not a problem with texting. I now only rely on my laptop. We need to get people off of "smart" phones as they are not making people smart. How many hours are wasted when people are supposed to be working and clients are paying for a service when most of the time, I see people distracted by a large screen. My kids don't have a smart phone only a basic one to call when to collect from school and they are much happier and doing well socially and in school without them. I am flying alot and this gives me time to read and I use it as time for a break from my desk and computer but how many others around me are stuck to screens when travelling.
I now going to deep through my drawers to see if I still have my old Sony Ericsson W595. One nice thing is that it can play MP3 and video files, but I am not sure whether Google Maps is still working.
I turn off all notifications and I can still listen to music or taking pictures. No social networking installed also only messages to keep in touch with my family
I don’t use Spotify or any other music streaming service; I hear all my music with the mp3 files that I downloaded in my old computer many years ago, and I synchronized them with my iPhone. And if I want new music, I download it from a Telegram bot.
i recently bought a dumbphone to use as a weekend/offtime device so i can still remain reachable incase work or family need me in an emergency and honeslty i pull it out at times just to hold it lol, definitely not embarassing since people are more intrigued by it (it's a peach coloured nokia 215 so that ads to the interest) and i enjoy having it even if i'm not using it more than my zfold
I have an iPhone 5 which today is almost a dumb phone since it can't run the latest apps. It can still do iMessage and take pictures, oh an music. Many people have tablets now. Do I really need a tablet AND an iPhone? A tablet is just going to sit there until you log into a wi-fi hotspot so I can catch up on spam when I'm at a hotel or metro station. If manufacturers start making feature phones that look modern, stylish and with a modest set of tools like a camera and maybe a basic browser for QR code scanning, I think people would buy it. Smartphone users would buy it for a backup or for their kids first phone.
I ordered a dumb phone and see how it goes. It's discouraging though to see vids that claim how much better thrir lives are with dumbphones but still return to smart pnes after a week or a few months. It's like you don't mean what you say.We got pcs anyway so it's not like you miss that much using a dumb phone
i use a samsung keypad phone for the past 5 years.... i dont care about social media.... i am not a movie star i dont need thousands of followers... if i need to access internet i have my computer for that purpose
Seems a good option if you a kid or teenager and don't work. My work routine requires a smartphone, I also make bank transactions on the go with my phone in a daily basis. If your contry uses SMS instead of Telegram/Whatsapp/LINE this can be a solution. If you need it for communication basically to work you have to chose your job or the phone. This change is not to everyone.
Your right, Felipe. In fact what a lot of us seem to be doing (including me) we just restrict our smartphones and our selves to be healthier. And then carefully monitor the situation so we don’t slip into any bad habits 👍🏻
ok but what do you do at a restuarant that only has a QR code scan for a menu ? or in general want to put a flight ticket/qr code on the phone ? and google maps ?
I only allow myself to have my smartphone inside of the house, whenever I go outside I take my dumbphone, but I only really use my smartphone in the house while on the toilet, to listen music while sleeping and to sometimes stream movies or series to our TV.
You can still have a smart phone, cull down apps minimise time on them, and your good to go. No need for a dumb phone to be smart not to use a phone, if you want dumb phone, uninstall preexisting apps and don't download the social apps, just use what's necessary and resist the temptation to install. 😊
Great video! Im intending to switch as well. However, many services now requite an app to get access. I.e. discount train tickets or caffe nero reward cards. How do you deal with this issue?
I got the updated version of a Nokia 105, but have had nothing but problems with it:-( Due to the mechanism of the sim card, as you've only to knock it or worse still drop & it knocks it out of sync & its really awkward to put the sim card back in!
I bought one of these because I just wanted a basic phone and SMS capability. It appeared to be the simplest phone available. But the phone still has a heap of unwanted crap that just complicates simple operations. Games, radio, torch etc. I didn't want any of that! There are still too many buttons and you don't get a comprehensive user manual. So it's hit and miss, teach yourself! We are just supposed to know how to use everything electronic it seems!
There should be a smartphone with a tiny screen and a physical keyboard. You'll still have most of the features of a smartphone like online payment or listening to podcasts but it would be highly inconvenient to watch reels or waste time.

Jose that is an awesome attitude fair play dude. Even though others may judge you, I think your doing something awesome and reaping the rewards 👍🏻😊

So what song is the magical song that is allowed to be on your phone that's the real question

People are shocked that we can get by with basic phones in todays age
Excellent! I have the same. Only a different Nokia 😄
I use a dumb phone (more like 3) and I use social media and other stuff on my computer
Nice, thats a good arrangement because it means you are only using social media at certain times rather than all the time. 👍🏻
I have to be honest I don’t know some of the technical specifics you mentioned but that’s interesting about flip phones. People love them because they are cool to use. WhatsApp is so good compared to normal text and phone calls your right but I was able to get by using it
Same here I use laptop sold my smartphone only feature phone
@@DarbyWilcockusing a laptop with a feature phone is no different from using a smartphone alone. Why do you feel the need to have 3 ?
I did this a couple years ago and I’m so happy that more and more people are doing it. Gives me hope for the future.

I can’t stand Facebook or social media anyway. I just watch UA-cam and learn.
I like your video. I agree it's boredom that we try to change and the change becomes a great distraction. Thank you.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video 👍🏻
I am very surprised to find more people doing this. I've been using my old Sony Ericsson Walkman W995 for several months now and I'm quite satisfied with the results: I feel like I waste less time on useless things and concentrate more.
I chose the Sony Walkman because I love listening to music in my daily life.
Excellent video! Congratulations!
Hi Ignacio, I’m like you, i was super surprised by how many people are interested in this. The ericssons were classic phones 😊👍🏻
Before I googled Sony Ericsson Walkman I thought you were using an actual walkman! Like a portable cassette player, LOL

I find carrying a ridiculously out of date smartphone (Windows Phone, android 2.3 etc) actually works kinda well.
That’s exactly how I’m using my smartphone now. I’ve got a video on it 👍🏻
Thank you for watching btw
Hmm--I wonder has Apple or Google considered adding a setting in iOS and Android so the phone works more or less like a feature phone except for one app for messaging. That way, you get the benefits of a feature phone but with an optional settings change, you still have access to other apps installed on your phone.
@@Sacto1654 no, because their businessmodel is to get filthy rich from advertising. If you have no apps there is nothing much to advertise.
Exactly
Absolutely same point of view
Absolutely love the editing you do in your videos. You mix education with comedy. ;P
Haha you're probably right. Just think of it as a fun little experiment.
Do you use Facebook or anything like that on your pc/laptop?
If they made a dumb phone with a good camera and maps I'd be sold lol
There's one, i guess.
Just ordered a Nokia 225 4G to replace my iPhone 14 Pro. Going for 1mo using only the Nokia at first (and maybe an old school iPod for music). We'll see where things go from there!

I keep telling myself I need to have my phone to be able to check email/social media etc for my business
or I watch UA-cam/Netflix etc in the background on the phone when I'm doing other things like cleaning
and all of those things are not necessary and add extra noise to my life... but I also read ebooks on the Kindle app or listen to audiobooks through Audible and podcasts/music through Spotify when driving/working out - so my question is, what do you do when you're driving/working out? Do you still listen to podcasts/music somehow?
I'm considering "dumbing down my smartphone" instead, by removing all social media/UA-cam/Netflix but keeping the educational apps like Kindle, Spotify, and Audible - but then I will always have the distraction/option of downloading everything again at the touch of a button
Now that I'm typing this out, I definitely realise that I have an addiction to my phone haha
@@DarbyWilcock yeah you're right about using the computer for social media/business

Your videos deserve a lot more attention by the way! They would be helpful for a lot of people 😊
Thank you and good luck 👍🏻
As for me I don't feel ashamed of using dumb phones but if you do there is an option of putting the phone silence when powering it on.
The irony is watching this video contributes to my stress level, but it helps you out for sure!
The man thing for me is Smart Phones are just Too Big, Chunky and Heavy (200 grams now in average, thats ridiculous)
Hair cut? Nice! I bought a used dumb phone last week. Still need to take the plunge tho-
Haha yes, I cut it all off a couple of weeks ago, it was getting a bit impractical so I just went for it.
Great GREAT video! Underrated.

So…unsubscribe first!)
Overall a smartphone with just tool apps like navigation and banking is a incredibly handy device. It are the extra apps that make it addictive.
Go outside. Into the sunlight. Breathe. Talk to people. Connect. Enjoy.
I just need a messenger on my phone, the gaming is on my tablet and work is on my laptop, that's how I get around things.
You are right sir people are over using smartphone
Nice vid and topic. I don’t call it a dumb phone but rather a wise phone. 👍
Haha I love that. No one will know what you are talking about 😂
It is not the smartphone that is the problem but what apps you install on it. I remember the days when we only had landlines or GSM's for calling and texting. In general I was better off: but an app for parking, the banking app, etcetera. Sometimes I need to install something on my phone to connect to the broker's website where I buy and sell shares and options. I hate my phone spying on me.

@@DarbyWilcock yea i tried all of those once like tiktok n stuff but i just barely used them and went on youtube instead
Great! video. Thank you!!
the only issue i had with using my old blackberry (basically a dumbphone now) is the lack of uber :( since I'm a student and don't have a car, having the app is basically a necessity for my transport.
Load some podcasts onto a memory card OR use the built in radio when wearing headphones.
Brak nawigacji GPS w prostych telefonach jest nie do przeskoczenia w mojej pracy.
I just read a good tip: Take out the sim card but - Sim in the dumb phone. Done.
(If you want to - you can still use your smartphone so etimes for photos, videos and music.
Also, you can transform UA-cam songs into mp3 for your smartphone to make a playlist).
Not a bad idea, the problem is, you now have 2 devices instead of one.
Modern feature phones are freaking expensive! I'll need to find some way of getting my ol LG Extravert 2 back up and on the air if I want to get into the dumbphone scene.
This phone cost me £20 in dollars that’s about $27
@@DarbyWilcock Nice. I was looking into KaiOS phones and that's where I got shocked by the price of entry.
I haven’t heard of them but like I said you can get some real cheap ones
Photos and music. A phone with a good camera and ability to play music are essential to me
Rather than be thinking about boredom think about creativity as a motivator.
That’s lovely Nicholas, I’m glad your kids are getting on well with them too
I now going to deep through my drawers to see if I still have my old Sony Ericsson W595.
The good old fashioned way 😂
+1 one for local music files, -1 for using Telegram’s closed service
@@gotoastalwhat’s wrong with Telegram? It’s a excellent app with tons of functions. If you know where I can get local music files, please let me know.
Hey can you share how to download songs via telegram
i recently bought a dumbphone to use as a weekend/offtime device so i can still remain reachable incase work or family need me in an emergency and honeslty i pull it out at times just to hold it lol, definitely not embarassing since people are more intrigued by it (it's a peach coloured nokia 215 so that ads to the interest) and i enjoy having it even if i'm not using it more than my zfold
Excellent video 😊
if there was dumbphone with apps it would help so much, weather app, public transport app some of these are useful imo
Great vid. I just got a dumb phone and ama try this switch. Hope i kinda succeed.
To be honest I switched for an only
One day 😊and I'm
So
Happy of my decision
Seems a good option if you a kid or teenager and don't work. My work routine requires a smartphone, I also make bank transactions on the go with my phone in a daily basis. If your contry uses SMS instead of Telegram/Whatsapp/LINE this can be a solution. If you need it for communication basically to work you have to chose your job or the phone. This change is not to everyone.
Your right, Felipe. In fact what a lot of us seem to be doing (including me) we just restrict our smartphones and our selves to be healthier. And then carefully monitor the situation so we don’t slip into any bad habits 👍🏻
The only Social media I use is the fediverse and UA-cam, and I could easily drop both, but I don't really talk to anyone at all outside of that
ok but what do you do at a restuarant that only has a QR code scan for a menu ? or in general want to put a flight ticket/qr code on the phone ? and google maps ?
I only allow myself to have my smartphone inside of the house, whenever I go outside I take my dumbphone, but I only really use my smartphone in the house while on the toilet, to listen music while sleeping and to sometimes stream movies or series to our TV.
Now my main problem is my computer, I'm still on my computer for most of the day.
my smartphone broke by a accidental fall so now i use a feature phone and my pc as a alternative
quality of video is amazing
You can still have a smart phone, cull down apps minimise time on them, and your good to go. No need for a dumb phone to be smart not to use a phone, if you want dumb phone, uninstall preexisting apps and don't download the social apps, just use what's necessary and resist the temptation to install. 😊
Literally just ordered a flip phone today, I'm so done with this algorithmic nightmare
I’m also interested in the idea of quitting smart phone but I couldn’t for one reason: payment.
i've gone cell phone free and only do landline, I'm loving the freedom
Excellent channel. Subbed!
Thank you very much, I’m glad you liked the video 👍🏻
I had a smartwatch but I found it very distracting
Smart 🧠
I want a dumb phone but all my communication is via WhatsApp, any tips? Or phone ideas?
