It is so subjective that people will need to decide themselves if they wish to do so. I could say nice words about it, but being the designer and the seller of the DAC, not sure how you would take it.
Depends on what you want and the options, can find the prices in kaamostech.com/shop/ But briefly, the W-DAC XLR is around £95, DAR18 S/PDIF receiver is around £45, and OFA PSU £105.
I may be focusing more on the multi-channel modules in the future as stereo market is so saturated. Of course, these are quite small so can easily hook up multiple boards. I am just planning an 8-channel DAC for myself using these - not USB though.
@@kaamostech Thank you - that's interesting, what would you use as a source? I would be interested in something that could pull 8-channel PCM out of an HDMI or DisplayPort connection - especially if it could also pass through audio-less video to a monitor. I had assumed that USB would be the easiest source for computer audio post crossover or decoding, but just an assumption.
@ Hi, yes I got it. Sorry I haven't replied yet. It sounds interesting, I just wanted to read a bit more about it first but haven't got time. Will come back to you in the coming days.
@ I will just use multiple S/PDIFs or so from a DSP. Proper HDMI is tricky (and complicated) to implement for a hobbyist, being under all sorts of licenses etc - afaik. USB probably is the easiest indeed, if a computer is part of your system.
Nah, see you are forgetting that you need to put it on a massive board with 40 different inputs and outputs no one needs, about 20 buttons that do nothing, and make a noisy power supply that will ultimately ruin the performance of the dac. See if you did those things you could charge 40K for this thing and some poor schmuck would buy it. -in all seriousness, I have made circuits similar to this one in the past. I am very happy to see the LT3042. You have no idea how many times I have seen people use an lm317 and then claim they are getting 24 bit performance.
Can still add all the buttons and extras around this :) Audio is such a weird thing. Often the focus is on something totally irrelevant while omitting the vital stuff. All technical arguments and even measurements can be undermined by a subjective opinion. Of course, when it is a hobby, each to their own. LM317 is still a solid choice for many things but yeah, not necessarily the last word in a converter design.
I really like this new update - I just pulled the trigger on a purchase of the new PCBs, can't wait to get them!
Thank you a lot. They will be shipped tomorrow.
please update us with your thoughts when you get a chance, thank you
Good analysis and measurement example.
Thank you
But what does it sound like and how does it compare to commercial offerings with similar sonic performance.

so what does this whole setup cost?

I suppose it might be niche, but it would be really interesting to see best practice for a USB -> 8 channel DAC.

@@kaamostech Hello! Yesterday I've messaged you thru the website contact form about the USB interface. I hope you got the message :)

Mm ok. Websites are far from my expertise but I can try to have a look into it at some point.
Thank you!
