Eleven years later and this information still holds, I’m new to photography and got a bit discouraged by this model camera and my low level capabilities. But this video helps me learn, function and navigate a little better! Thank you!
Hi Chayla, same with me. How is it going now? Have you made photo's? alsoI felt so intimidated and confused by the camera and all the settings. But luckily I found Tom's video :) Thanks to you Tom I feel enthusiastic again. Thank you so much. I will watch part 2 too. Tom, may I please ask a little thing? The screen very quickly goes to black. Is there a possibility to change that? Thank you. I wish you both a beautiful week ahead, with lots of creativity and beautiful photos. Kind regards from Amsterdam :)
@@ingejustavanderhelm5208did you ever find a solution to this? I just inherited this camera from my parents who’s had it forever and never learned how to use it so they had no clue either
Just trying to learn something this quarantine with my camera I haven’t used for a long time. I’m only halfway of your video but I’ve already learned so much.
Hey there Joyce! I’m the same! I’ve had my camera for quite some time. It’s about time I used it properly! Thank you Tom for such an informative session. Hubby and I plan to do a photo shoot in the near future. 🤗🤗🤗
Just got this camera from my parents who were not using it. Excellent tutorial! Huge thanks for making this simple and covering all the basic operational features. You rock!
Finally someone who makes sense ! Thank you so so much. I've watched so many tutorials for beginners but no one explained it like you did. This is exactly what I needed ! Thank you !
A good friend recommended this camera for me and after seeing your video I completely understand why he did! I love that the camera clearly states what pictures you may take in the easy mode. It allows you time to become comfortable with actually using it and to work your way up to an advance level. Thank you so much for this detailed video!
Just purchased it online. This is the most helpful video among any other d3100 tutorial videos. You just tell us straight basic thing on how to take a good photo.
Excellent tutorials, bought a used D3100 to dip my toe in digital SLR having last used an SLR in the days of film. 13 years after you made this content and can't find better.
My mom has had this camera for 6 years when this video was posted and I want to get into photography because I'll also be doing art soon so this helps a lot thanks ☺️💞
Thank you so so much. I have had this camera for 3 years and never new what the buttons were for until I watched your tutorial and have learnt a lot today ❤️
Just want to thank you for the time you spent, and great detail you put into these D3100 videos, i just got my first dslr , after using a point and shoot for many years,i was really nervous about learning all that it has to offer, and not being able to pick it up and get my moneys worth, but your videos are really helping me understand not just this camera, but more importantly how to use it and get a really nice photo.
Recently i got this Camera, And by this video, i could learn almost the camera settings. I'm up with it now, and thanks for this very, very basic basic operations.
I've had my D3100 for a few months and the longer I have the camera and practice with it, I learn a little more. I've watched this video before and today have watched it twice and everything makes so much sense now! Tom does an excellent job of teaching and I will refer to this tutorial when I need it. Good job Tom!
New to a "real" camera. I want to take a photography lesson, but your video really helped my learn how to start to use this camera. Great lesson thanks..onto your next one
I always wanted to get into photography but always made the excuse not to. My friend passed away and she left me with a red version of one of these cameras to start what I wanted to do years ago but I had no idea what I was doing with it haha. I know it's an old video but still helping people! Thank you sir.
I'm sorry for your loss. Hopefully you can make great use out of it, such a lovely and thoughtful gift from your friend. If you have any questions, just let me know.

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I just decided my next camera will be the Nikon 3100 and it will be my first DSLR. So thanks again for explaining some of the basic functions.
I've just watched your tutorials on The Nikon D3100 DSLR, I've found them so easy and informative, I watched, Nikon D3100 DSLR basic beginner tutorials parts 1-4, thank you.
Thank you so much. I was used to a film camera, but this has been so helpful in understanding all those functions I did not. I found that I could not seem to get what I wanted when I wanted it. I am very grateful now I can start all over.
Thank you for making this video! I am borrowing a D3200 and trying to learn as much as I can about it before my trip. Ultimately, I would want to take a proper beginner photography class, but for now your video is the best I've seen so far! Thank you!
Yes there is. Go to the spanner icon and select reset setup options. You can also go to the shooting menu which is the camera icon and select reset shooting options for a soft reset.
love that u just get right to it and it’s super clear and easy to understand! Thanks! Gonna send my mom the video too. we’re both trying to learn. this will hopefully bring us closer so thank you!
Thank you so much Tom, your video was SO helpful to me. I just received one about a month ago and I have been taking pix but wasn't sure about all the dials and settings. So just watching this has helped me a lot!! :-)

thanx, this video was so helpful, and since this camera has a guide mode, i decided to buy it again against my other option which was the canon eos 1100d
You use it when you want to control motion, or you have the need or desire for a specific shutter speed. I shoot 90% in aperture priority as its usually depth of field I want to control. Just use whatever mode suits what you are trying to achieve.
Thank you so much... And a Video so well done! - A wonderful step by step demonstration for someone who is unfamiliar with the complexities of the NIKON D3100.
Thank you for this excellent video! I wish i would have watched this when i first purchased my D3100. I've read through the manual several times, but your video was much more helpful. You should be having Nikon pay you for your helpful video! Thanks!

Its true a DSLR seems like a step backwards after using a p&s, but keep at it and your pictures will improve drastically. In what way did you feel the lens wasnt acting right? Its perfectly capable for most situations, but has its limitations, as do all lenses. If you were trying to autofocus, then chances are the lens would struggle in dim light.
