  • I apply one layer of 4 ounce fiberglass cloth on the outside of the deck and hull. The cloth is wet out with epoxy resin.
This is from a series of videos showing the steps of building a wooden kayak using the "strip-planked" or "strip-built" method. This particular boat is a high performance sea kayak design called the Petrel by Guillemot Kayaks. More information about the boat is available at www.guillemot-kayaks.com . Further information about the building techniques shown in these videos is available in the book "Building Strip-Planked Boats": building-strip-planked-boats.com/ For more videos in this series please visit: www.guillemot-kayaks.com/guill...

@toolguy46 I'm using rubber squeegee that is available from some fiberglassing sources. I also use the plastic squeegees that you can get for autobody work.
6 ounce cloth is suitable for larger boats, tandem kayaks, and kayaks that will used very hard. 4 ounce ends up being very strong, but I double up on the bottom. Use 6 where you just want more strength

Love the idea of using spot gluing and accelerant...way easier than using epoxy and waiting...and waiting...good time saver

When I built my S&G Night Heron (high deck) I used internal forms...not sure which way is easier...external vs. internal. In the end, I got a beautiful kayak that garners plenty of attention when I am on a beach or trying to find water. It's a beautiful design that creates a kayak that is easy handling and fun to play on the water with. I have the forms to build a strip version of this kayak...gotta get on that.

The bubbles should rise to the surface and pop, leaving the resin transparent. When using the grunge cup to collect excess resin, don't use any of the highly aerated resin from the cup on the boat.

I like the ...cutting the cup trick.

@deepbluewaterful I am wearing an organic vapor filter on my respirator. While epoxy does not produce much vapor, it probably is not a good idea to breath the vapor it does produce. The filter does a good job.

Did you stain these before glassing them? If so, does commercial stain that both colors and seals the wood interfere with glassing? I'm considering building my own boat and want a bright colored boat that still shows the wood grain so I'm looking at staining it.

This boat was stained before I applied the fiberglass and epoxy. I would avoid oil based stains and the all-in-one stains. Oil based will interfere with the epoxy, the stains that include varnish will weaken the epoxy bond to the wood.
I used an alcohol base stain that does not interfere with the epoxy. The brand I use is Behlen Solar-Lux. I've used it for years with out problems, they have a decent range of colors.

Very good video showing proper technique! I'm curious-is the squegee a commercially made one, or something home made-looks like it has some thickness to it, but tapers at the edge. Also, when would one use the 6oz. cloth that is also available for this application?
