The music was written by the guitar player, Tony iommi (promounced "eye-owe-me"), who is generally credited with inventing metal; the lyrics were written by the bassist, Geezer Butler. Bill Ward was the drummer and Ozzy Osbourne did the vocals. The band was essentially Iommi's band. Eventually Iommi ended up firing Ozzy Osbourne due to his being too perpetually stoned to function. They later reunited years later. An excellent next chopice from them would be "Into the Void".
Ozzy is 21 here. He is credited as a contributor but the reality is that the bassist, Geezer Butler, wrote and composed this classic

Yep. Butler originally wrote this song about Satanic cults and their main holiday called Wirpurgers day. The song really didn't have anything to with war commentary, but satanism and how stupid it is. The record company made him change the title or they wouldn't allow it on the album, Wirpurger being a "bad word" in England. Most Americans wouldn't have paid any attention to the word because they didn't know what it was. Geezer was in fact the band's chief lyricist, not Ozzy.

Bill Ward (The Drummer) is CRMINALLY underrated. Especially when top 5 or 10 lists of best metal drummers are created. He typically doesn't even make the list, and MAYBE gets an "honorable mention" or something ridiculous like that.
This song was made for, and came out during the Vietnam War. Tensions were very high here at home in the States but, also every where else. Tensions that we (America) caused.
We had riots all over the States, protesters killed in Berkley Univ. We had already lost over 1/4 of a million Black and White Men Fighting for a war we had no business being involved in.
Ozzy wanted to express his view of the war. The War Pigs Ozzy is talking about is our very own U.S. Government.
Bill Ward, great drummer. Like John Bonham from Led Zeppelin they were heavily influenced by Blues, and Jazz drummers. Most Heavy Metal drummers of the last 30 were influenced by John Bonham, and Bill Ward

Hard to believe that this song came out in 1971. The song has very good anti-war lyrics in it. Ozzy sounds very good in this song as well. Also, Bill Ward's drumming is very powerful in this song too.
Because you mentioned it, I think that you may have heard (part of) the song, right in the end of the epic movie "300" (2006), with Gerard Butler, Lena Headey and other quality actors cast.

War Pigs is *the* Black Sabbath song for me (#1), as quite as it is the band itself! I so deeply adore them since my childhood at '70s that I've heard them for my very first time, I equally super love them to this day.. and eventually, till the very day that I'll be gone from here!
And especially, that specific part of the song.. I mean this divine Tony Iommi's riff at the 9:01 part of your video and afterwards (along with his last guitar solo), is a bouquet of perfect musical notes that are sent right from Heaven.. It is a riff one could easily "give away" his soul for it.. A truly powerful _audio_ orgasm (eargasm).. surely, an intense one!!! 😌🙏
Definitely check out the very first Thrash Metal song ever made: "Children of the Grave". It is on the Master of Reality album from Black Sabbath, that also has Ozzy singing on it as well. Which also came out in 1971. The same year that War Pigs came out. It is hard to believe a song that heavy and that dark like Children of the Grave was made back in 1971. You will definitely hear the Thrash Metal sound in Children of the Grave song. This is where all Thrash Metal came from.
Ozzy was still with the band. This song came out in 1971, and it was Black Sabbath's 2nd album. Bassist Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics. Ozzy wouldn't break away from the band until 1979. Also, I would like to request you do a review of their song "Changes".

Tony iommi, the lead guitar player, is generally credited with inventing metal, and is a once in a hundred year creative genius. Geezer (Terry) Butler, the bass player, wrote the lyrics to all of their stuff while Ozzy (John) Osbourne was still singing for them. Iommi wrote all the music. He eventually had to fire Ozzy after Ozzy was so perpetually wasted that he couldn't function. It's nice to see someone reacting thoughtfully and paying attention to both music and lyrics! Nice job! Is there a way to request reactions specifically with donations?
I think microphone sound back then in the early 70's was different back then than it is now. That is why Bill Ward's drumming might sound louder and more dynamic.
The other "granddaddy" of Metal is Deep Purple. "Child in Time", "Burn", "Highway Star" - all popular tunes to begin their experience.
Great reaction. I think this is an unconventional way to approach the drums. I remember hearing this many years ago and thinking the drums are not what I expected and yet it totally works and better than if they were approached conventionally. I would love a reaction to Black Sabbath-Black Sabbath. That’s my fave Black Sabbath song. This is my second.

The Drums sound Raw and Full! Not in the background like a lot of music today
I don't know what is used today as far as drums are concerned but back then they used real drums played by one of the band members. 1971-72 were great years for rock music. Perhaps you could try the Black Sabbath song titled "Black Sabbath" from their first album. A bit creepy but I think you'll understand why.

Try the song "Disturbing the Priest" from the album "Born Again"
That's the only Black Sabbath album with Ian Gillan from Deep Purple singing on it.
It is far & away the most unique album Sabbath ever wrote & the wailing screams have never been reproduced.
It's arguably the darkest most haunting album they ever wrote as well.
Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and The Doors are my holy trinity. They were all massive influences on my bass playing and music writing. How about Pink Floyd, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun and The Doors, The End.

The guitarist Tony Iommi's amazing of course -also lost the tips of his fingers in a factory accident and thought he was done.... but made new ones out of melted bottle tops! Down tuned the guitar too and ended up giving it a particular style buttttt.... (Oh and Ozzy sounds great) but it is those drums and the bass. Must be one of the best drummers ever and bassist... one of the best rhythm sections ever. I love the breakdown... and you know the one I mean lol!

The Drums sound different, because they are NOT Computer generated Garbage! They are Driven by the Soul of a True Artist!
Don't forget about some of the Mozart top classical music to some of that stuff has a lot of bars in it and it's just so beautiful all played together a lot of metal come from that style

We can have peace, but we got to be ruthlessly honest about what causes war. We have to be willing to question the fundamental assumptions about our economy and politics. Like you said, a 50 year old song is still relevant, so it’s more complicated than getting a specific party or person into power.
Us poor and working people in America have been robbed of our own vocabulary to describe these things, and people like Bernie Sanders only barely articulate the answers. It goes even deeper than just more welfare. Tulsi Gabbard gets closer to the truth.
But the reality is, capitalism needs constant growth. But our domestic economy is already fully developed. So if a huge company like Exxon or Bank of America wants to make more profits, they gotta go overseas, to a fresh market in a developing country. But not everyone overseas necessarily wants them to set up shop, at least not without a lot of regulations, because foreign companies from rich countries have a habit of wanting to do things their way, and their way only. Imagine being a country with a smaller GDP than the operating budget of a foreign business that wants to control your most vital resources. But regulations defeat the purpose of going overseas, to a small country with a lower standard of living where people are cheaper to employ and you can get away with more. So, they get the government to declare a humanitarian crisis that can only be solved by regime change. It’s disgusting, but that’s the truth. It’s bipartisan pillaging.
Look at Venezuela. They turned their oil into something publicly owned, to fund their anti-poverty programs. And they’ve been really successful until the Saudis flooded the market with oil, crashing the prices, and the US leaped at the opportunity to put sanctions on them. Now Venezuela is in a crisis, it cannot get access to its money held in foreign banks or the profits from its American branch, Citgo.
And now the US is backing an unpopular opposition, declaring who their new president is gonna be, a president who will privatize their oil and let foreign businesses utilize it for cheap. Less than 20% of Venezuelans have heard of this guy. Maduro isn’t popular, but the opposition is much less popular, which is why they are reaching out to Trump instead of their own people.
But we don’t need an economy built on perpetual expansion anymore. The US has the productive capacity to meet all of our needs. We have 8 empty houses for every homeless person. We throw away half of our food, while 25% of our children go hungry. Stores destroy excess clothes they cannot sell, to keep prices up. We are so productive it puts people out of work. Imagine if instead we reduced the work week, increased wages, and expanded benefits of work to include full healthcare, lifelong education and job training, subsidized housing and transit, vacations and parental leave, sick leave, and personal time off. We can absolutely do this, but this isn’t in the interests of the 1% of the population who own 60% of shares in business, and couldn’t care less about us, much less our brothers and sisters in a foreign country who want peace and prosperity as much as we do. That 1% only makes money of constant growth, on a finite planet. They don’t make it from working for a living.
If our economy was publicly owned and administered democratically, we could directly meet people’s needs. We wouldn’t have politicians and business people who need to push around the little guy to make mega profits. We wouldn’t be in iraq or Afghanistan or syria under false pretenses. We wouldn’t have the world’s biggest prison population. We wouldn’t have a student loan, mortgage, or credit card debt crisis. We wouldn’t be relying on police to solve social problems that politicians refuse to raise taxes to solve. We wouldn’t be sending our jobs overseas. We wouldn’t have refugee and immigrant crisis because our government is destroying their local economies with unfair trade deals.
The solution to peace is right here within us, we just need to realize it

which retails the true event of them renting a hotel floor at Montreux Casino-Hotel in Switzerland, at the border of Lake Geneva, to record the album (Machine Head) and during a gig by Frank Zappa in the same place, an overzealous fan used a flare gun and the hotel burned to the ground.
Deep Purple had to find another place to finish recording their songs and the Rolling Stones came to the rescue bringing their mobile recording studio.
Smoke on the water refers to the actual smoke on the water as burning debris of the hotel fell into the lake.
