Although you can use it to relate to many things in life, its about Cocaine Addiction. "Chop your breakfast on a mirror." Hetfield is a master at lyrical storytelling, and Metallica's Music all has deep meaning. Megadeth is right there with them. I grew up listening to these and heard this album the day it was released. Late 70s, 80s and early 90s Metal is the Apex of its genre.
Hi, just thinking of a recommendation a bit different to the other channels & I really recommend Sisters of Mercy. Especially 'Temple of Love' (1992 version) or 'More'. Great male & female vocals, bit gothy but massively popular amongst rock fans & floor fillers at rock clubs.

The song is meant to be about drug abuse, and I don't see how you can interpret it any other way. Why else would James Hetfield sing a line in one of the verses that goes "chop your breakfast on a mirror"?

don`t remember where i read it but i remember james ones said that the song was about addictions not so much drugs.
still the drug line in this song are all over the place.
James ALWAYS says "It's about whatever you think it's about." He says that about every song they have.
