    Really hope DC starts releasing Bronze Age Batman and Detective Comics Omnibuses soon. Or just a Batman by Denny O'Neil Omnibus would be perfect actually. That's one book I've been waiting years for.

    These team up books were always my favorite when i was a kid. Two heroes in one book and usually in self contained stories. It was hard to get every issue before the comic book stores flourished or even just because of limited kid resources. Dc comics presents and marvel team up and marvel two in one.

    Omar you have done it again. Sold me on an omnibus that is. I share your love of Jim Aparo. He deserves more recognition as one of the all time greats in my opinion. And I am also a total mark for anything by the ever awesome but still underrated Bob Haney. He was a writer/editor who never let "continuity" stand in the way of telling a really good story. Keep up the excellent work Omar.

    Batman/Manbat Prescription for tragedy. I used to own that comic back in the 80s. It was a translated to Spanish issue from a Mexican publisher (Novaro). My godmother used to buy me a few (DC superheroes as well as Popeye, Bugs Bunny and others). But I distinctly remember Batman/Manbat and Manbat crying “Mi hija se muere y tú eres el culpable Batman!” I might get this omni just for that.

    This is the era where Brave and the Bold becomes interesting from a storytelling perspective. As with most of DC comics. Prior to then, stories were just abysmal. And you can’t g9 wrong with Aparo artwork.

      so which eras are good stories and which are the ones to avoid, asking as a beginner..

    • @terrencecoccoli524
      @terrencecoccoli524 2 роки тому +4

      @@kevinarriaza1951 Wow, that's a hard question to answer because we all have our perspective. For me, and I think this will apply to others, some things that I appreciate back in the day, I'm not sure if I'd necessarily want to revisit.
      For example, when I was first getting into comics, I absolutely loved old school Stan Lee / Steve Ditko Spiderman. I used to have the pocketbook version of the early books. And i still love them mainly for nostalgia, although I do think the writing for Spiderman -- seeing everything through the eyes of a moody teenager was brilliant and remains so!
      But storytelling has matured in the decades since. I tried reading through the Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol 1 recently, because again, they were one of my first loves. But I just wound up skipping through the artwork. The storys are just meh.
      I'm reading the Starman Compendium now and ABSOLUTELY LOVE the storytelling there. Had the same experience reading through Constantine from similar era, and Lucifer. The writing in these is sophisticated, funny, challenging even. Something that at this point in my life, I look for.
      So it all depends on what you're looking for personally. I get more enjoyment from mature reads. and you can find a lot that fit that bit starting in 70's through current, IMO. But I still love the classics too!

  • @d.truett9980

    Hey Omar! First, great overview! (you confused issue 197 with 182, both are Earth-2 related, and both were written by the brilliant Alan Brennert, just a heads up) Second: YOU GOTTA get BATMAN: THE BRAVE & THE BOLD: THE BRONZE AGE VOL.2, if you haven't already (think I saw an over-view of volume 1 by you). THAT volume is even MORE packed with beautiful -- from the mid 1970s to early 80s -- Artwork by Jim Aparo! Yeah, the majority of the stories are by Zaney Bob Haney (a handful by other writers), but, likewise, the majority -- about 90 percent -- of the art is pure Jim Aparo. (Also: yeah, the first intro-preview story of Batman & the Outsiders IS, indeed -- as I was recently remined -- collected in BATMAN & THE OUTSIDERS, vol.1 -- Aparo's art is in about 1/3 of volume 2 of those hardback collections; vol. 3 is mostly Alan Davis, and a couple of others). Finally: since you seem to be as big a fan of Jim Aparo as I am, check out "The Outsiders" vol.1, issues 1-28. Twenty-two of those issues are ALL Jim Aparo, finishing up a second, brilliant, phase of fantastic Artwork (the first was during his B&B days -- and Spectre/Aquaman days --, from 1974-1983; the second only started with "Batman & the Outsiders"). Mike W. Barr does all of the writing, I believe. For reasons defying logic, DC Comics STILL hasn't done a book collection (paperback or hardcover), so you'll have to seek them out through the comic book stores (I did it all the way from Australia, where I now live). Also: DON'T forget to get a copy of SPECTRE: THE WRATH OF THE SPECTRE omnibus, because THAT book is 1/3 Jim Aparo art -- including the dustjacket, jacket flaps, and the actual book cover itself. (This has been an unpaid, unsolicited, message, from your not-so-neighborhood, but always friendly, Jim Aparo Artwork fan. :)

    Thank you for posting the video. I'm strongly considering getting all 3 volumes. The only thing that bothers me is the neon-bright cartoon coloring. It might be exactly the same colors they used originally, but it sure shows up different on the glossier paper. I bought a Jim Aparo book a while back and compared it to an old comic book he had drawn, and the difference was literally night and day. At first the bright colors are very eye-catching, but after a while I realized the darker more somber coloring in the original is a much better fit for gritty 70's Batman. I must ponder this for a while. Lol first world problems, huh?

    Omar: since you're an Aparo fan, and -- one hopes -- have been tracking down and purchasing the volume 2 omnibus (not to mention the Spectre omnibus and all of the Aquaman and Batman & the Outsider hardcovers), thought I might mention that you should hold onto your JOKER BRONZE AGE omnibus, because...the first printing (at least) comes with a Jim Aparo illustration (a panel from B&B 129) of the Joker, embossed on the back of the actual book cover, on back. :)

    I'll have e to see whether the Spectre BATB stories are also in The Spectre: Wrath of The Spectre Omnibus. Even though I have no plans on getting anything Batman centric, this does look tempting. And a huge Jim Aparo fan as well, but more his Bronze Age work on The Spectre and The Phantom Stranger. As an older teen, loved his and Don Newton's art on Batman, but unfortunately lost interest in the character later on.

    • @d.truett9980
      @d.truett9980 3 роки тому +1

      The B&B Spectre team-ups are in last year's Spectre Omnibus, as is ALL of Aparo's Spectre artwork, making the book 50 percent Aparo, including DJ, dustflaps and the actual cover of the book (the only they didn't include was Aparo's "Who's Who" artwork, which did make it into _that_ omnibus). Also: Volume TWO of BATMAN: THE BRAVE & THE BOLD BRONZE AGE has even MORE Jim Aparo artwork in it! Nearly 90 percent of the art is by Aparo in that volume. So if you're a fan, they're both great books (even vol. 1 has his artwork from issue 100 - 109, only a fourth of the book, but great stuff). And there's also the DEADMAN Omnibus, and vol. 1& 2 of the "Batman & the Outsiders" hardcover books. Not to mention: the huge PHANTOM STRANGER omnibus coming out next year (in May, or a bit later if pub. schedules have to shift).

    I should receive this soon as I preordered this months ago. My only complaint about the B&B omnis is that DC did not collect DC Special Series #8, a double-sized B&B story with Batman, Sgt. Rock, and Deadman, in the second or third volumes. Still, that's a minor quibble, I guess. (DC Special Series was a title from the '70s that switched between new and reprint material and for a time gave titles an extra-length story like an annual would have.)

I also mentioned, in my note, the recent Spectre omnibus: EXCELLENT book, and roughly 1/3rd drawn by Aparo, with his art decorating DJ, dustjacket flaps, and the hardcover book itself).
