  • I've supercharged a 6 gen Camaro SS and now own a new ZL1. Supercharged SS is FASTER!! This is due to the LT1's higher compression.

      Bruce Lee is correct. Very important differences. You WILL fight heat issues supercharging an SS. My opinion is to go N/A if you are shooting for 600hp on an SS. N/A runs cooler and is easier on those non forged pistons and especially easier on the connecting rods.

      Zl1 can handle more power , zl1 10 speed works better than a ss , if you add a supercharger on a ss it's probably gonna add alot more problems

      @BRUCE LEE yup, gonna need fuel upgrades past that. Im at 580 to the wheels with my pro charger. If I wanna go any higher I’d need the lt4 fuel kit and that ain’t cheap. Not even counting the forged internals

      @Boosted V8 Its not so much the blower that is the problem, its the fuel system. Stock blower can produce alot of power, but it gets hot as hell and you just straight up run out of fuel after a pulley and headers. If you want to put in a quality/reliable fuel system your looking at about 8-10k. Direct injection is EXPENSIVE to fuel.

    • @Sierra117_callsign
      @Sierra117_callsign 3 роки тому +6

      @Boosted V8 Partly why I never opted to go that route on my SS. I put in a 416 stroker with forged internals and procharger. Fuel is the only thing holding me back now.

    • @ms3ben
      @ms3ben 3 роки тому

      True but the blower is small and there are expensive fuel system limitations if you want to make big power reliably

    I have a 2017 2SS Fifty edition just like the one you had, and although trading it in for a ZL1 sounded tempting few months ago.. I love this car so much that I decided to keep it and get most of the ZL1 goodies instead. So I went with full ZL1 suspension and front brakes, LT4 complete fuel system, a new LT4 supercharger (custom powdercoated in Daytona orange to match the car) + the blower kit with upgraded cooling and full bolt-ons. And now this is the absolut perfect camaro for me 🙌🏼.
    Ps: I was so heart broken when your Fifty got ruined.. but I’m excited for this new build!!

    You have a good point to some of the items. However, the ZL1/LT4 platform is a full forged bottom end. This allows a lot more room without failure. So the price to pull the motor and rework all the internals to compare 🍎 to 🍎 is a big deal. The ZL1/1LE has more differences to be made to really be more different than the base model ZL1 to compare to the SS....a lot more. Keep up the good vids bro.

    comes 650hp w blower already, full forged bottom end, magnetic ride suspension, nicer interior, etc etc etc and its book value is way up vs a customized SS will book out for half what you gotta try and resell it for. Bolt on only can add 125 so 775. I have one, love it

    ZL1 is sooo much of a better platform than the SS. If you going auto the SS 10spd is NOT the as the 10spd in the ZL1. ZL1 has stronger engine internals and a stronger auto trans. Cant just slap a SC kit on an SS and call it a ZL1. Need fuel pumps, exhaust, etc... Limited to 600-650whp without building engine. ZL1 can make 900whp on the stovk block AND the trans can handle it.

    • @ZtZoomin
      @ZtZoomin  3 роки тому +4

      While I agree with most of what you said, everything you just listed can be had in an SS for cheaper minus the 10L90. But a built a8 can often match performance and still be cheaper. With a little effort and less $$ an SS can easily match a ZL1 at any performance level. That doesn’t mean it takes anything away from what the Z is lol
      And I definitely never called an SS a ZL1 LOL

    I’m with ya 100% bro, and it made sense to me too. Whippled my 18’ SS1LE. Touched up the tune and it dyno’d at 570 rwhp. All was cool for about 6,000 miles….one day pop. Front crank seal. Switched to a vented catch can. A month later cruising to get my Alky Control set up & tune. Pulled into gas station…smelled oil, and guess what? Front seal AGAIN! Now you are wondering, land ring, or piston issue? It’s all over the net. So yanked engine, did forged assembly, heads done, ARP head and main bolts, LT4 hi-side & injectors, completed rebuild & balanced. 500 miles later the new LS7 lifters had a failure. ( lots of notations on them too) Okay, so did Johnson lifters (should have done it the first time) 🥴 a BTR Stage 2 cam, pushrods, springs. ( done with the GM stuff) SPEC 2 clutch & flywheel…91 tune @ 634.9 rwhp. If I had bought a ZL1 from the get…I would have had a forged motor, and just had to pulley up and retune for a power level that would certainly break the LT1. Maybe I had some funky luck, but after the issues started making themselves known, others I found out got the same issues. So BE ADVISED GUYS. Stock ring gaps are real tight on LT1, paper thin front crank seal (use the LS3) and piston & ring issues are gonna show up more sooner than later. I love my ride now, and it is better than the stock ZL1, and definitely more durable, and prepped and clearanced for high boost should I choose. I’m at 9.5psi on 91 tune with decent power. I can nail it now without …uh oh, what now?? I would say go with a procharger, as the roots and twin screw PD blowers yield a high low end torque hit to the drive train, and it runs very close to what stock LT1 was designed to support….again, rods, pistons, detonation, clutch reliability issues are lurking. You may get away with it, but the LT4 is a much better platform for street roddin’. If you plunked down or are willing to put up over 7g for a blower set up…put some back up aside, cause you will need it! 🤓🤙🏽

The ZL1 1LE is just in a league of its own compared to the rest of the camaro due to the suspension and aerodynamics extremes. Literally never breaks loose and holds every turn I’ve ever taken. yea supercharging a high compression car sounds like a great idea to me. Good long term strategy. So your max effort build will be a drivers race against a stock zl1. Just pulley and e85 the zl1 and you'll get smoke. Or keep the zl1 stock under full warranty versus your voided warranty max build. If you've been in the game long enough you know when you build it's not if it breaks it's when.

    I owned a 2019 Camaro SS for a year. Did a ton of research on it, debated on supercharging it, until I found out that a stock LT1 is only capable about 650 horsepower before things start to go sideways. Whereas in a ZL1 you can push it to 1000 plus On the stock motor. So yeah you can make an SS faster by throwing a supercharger on it, but all you have to do to a ZL1 is throw a pulley and an intake on it with a tune and you'll be faster than that SS that you just spent $7,000 to $10,000 supercharging.

Problem is, once you mod a car, value drops and you won't get your money back. A ZL1 gives you more performance and you don't have to do anything to it, of course you can mod a zl1 but for those wanting more but also not wanting to modify the car, the zl1 makes more sense...assuming you really "need" more than an SS...which most don't.

    This is bad advice: Stock Suspension on a ZL1 is not the same suspension as the SS 1LE or SS with MRC option. The stock SS without the 1LE package or MRC option is the same suspension that goes on the corvettes without MRC. If you want that MRC option on the ZL1 you need to get the ZLE aka ZL1 1LE. Note: I do not recall if the MRC option is available on the stock ZL1 and if it was it is a $7000 option.
    Also, because what they don't tell you about the SS + Supercharging is at about 600+ rwhp you will shatter your rear end on a dragstrip with a tire. The ZL1 rear end can handle up to 1000rwhp.
    What they also don't tell you is to upgrade your SS rear end will run you about $5000 to get a ZL1 Rear end. Add another $8000 for the super charger, and oh if you don't have the 1LE package, add another $2000+ for wheels and tires, and also add about another $1000-$2000 or more for labor and tuning. And if you want to unlock the transmission add about another $2000. Oh, and you'll need forged internals when you add that supercharger so depending on where you get a drop-in rod and piston kit add another $1800-$3000 not including labor. You also need an upgraded fuel system and potentially an aux low side/high side fuel pump
    Now that $50,000 SS just cost you the same as that ZL1 AND you void your warranty on top of it.
    Take this advice with a grain of salt.
    That being said, what you CAN do with an SS and super charger, only works if you only run street tires and an upgraded fuel system. Then you won't get enough traction to damage the rear end as a result because you won't be able to launch nearly as hard as you would at a dragstrip with a tire. Food for thought for people considering this route.

    • @ZtZoomin

      You also commented on this video 7 months ago talking about building your SS.
      Did you blow the rear end or motor in your SS? Maybe get on here and talk about your experience. Maybe say where you went wrong so people don’t make the same mistake.
      Now I haven’t watched this video in over a year but I know I don’t talk about slapping a sc on and hitting the strip for hard launches. That’s hard on a stock vehicle’s drive train.
      Much of the stuff you mention would be great for a 800+ hp build SS. It’s still cheaper to get a reliable 580hp in an SS 1LE and be faster than a ZL1. This is also recommended for someone who already owns an SS, not going out and buying a brand new one at 50k just to supercharge lol.
      You’ve got several fallacies in your argument but I’ll just address your first one. ZL1 comes standard with MRC. ZL1 & SS 1LE have same suspension/rear end. Vert ZL1 & SS w/MRC have same suspension/rear end(no e-LSD). ZL1/SS 1LE & Vert ZL1/SS w/MRC have different rear ends. I know some SS’s rear ends have a cooler & some don’t. You would need an SS with the cooler in the rear end to be the same as Vert ZL1.
      *I think* ZL1 1LE have same suspension/rear end as ZL1/SS 1LE but it has higher gears in the rear end.
      *If* you did blow your SS, im sure people as well as myself would love to hear your story and what went wrong. Good cautionary tale for anyone considering modifying their vehicle. Modifying is *always* a risk
