God, I love watching people listening to this and not knowing what's coming. This song, especially live, is, without a doubt, the best three guitar attack ever recorded. Incidentally, the song was written about the death of, and a tribute to, Duanne Allman.
Allman Brothers Band guitarist Duane Allman died in 1971, two years before "Free Bird" was released. Skynyrd sometimes dedicated it to Allman at concerts, but it was written long before his death. The double guitar solo at the end is the same style as many early Allman Brothers songs on which Duane played.

I always associated the slow guitar playing versus the insane guitar playing as being before he flew away and wasn’t free and after he flew away and was free. Great song though, timeless classic.
He's telling the girl he's got to get on down the road. "Too many places I got to see...". Letting her down easy, 'cause it's been some good loving. But he's got to has his freedom from being tied down. He breaks it off and the music tells us he's flying free now; faster and faster.... Like an eagle.

Dancing to it is the equivalent of good sex. Starts off slow and easy, gets faster and leaves you exhausted.
Awesome reaction! Such a joy to watch others listen for the first time! I have head this song probably thousands of times and it still gets to me.
Did you know Lynrd Skynyrd was the name of their high school gym coach? They were also very close with the members of 38 Special, and Molly Hatchet. They would sit in for each other when playing gigs around Jacksonville. Ronnie VanZant has a park named after him off of Russell Rd in Middleburg/Green Cove Springs. His grave is unmarked because many years ago some people desecrated it/tried to dig it up.
Skynyrd sometimes dedicated it to Allman at concerts, but it was writtenlong before his death. The double guitar solo at the end is the same style as many early Allman Brothers songson which Duane played. After the 1977 plane crash that killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, his brother, Johnny, took his place.

I’ve always been amazed that Allen Collins fret board wasn’t smoking at the end of this song because he was so on fire.
Drunk chick who's been dancing by herself since 3PM: "Play Freebird, man!"
Rude Reviews: "Here we go."
Me: "A'ight."
