Callaway 2014 BIG BERTHA Irons
The new Big Bertha Irons can make you up to 2 clubs longer - true story. It's the BALL SPEED all across the face that makes this distance a reality because for the first time ever, we're putting the same 360 Face Cup Technology we use in our fairway woods into our irons.

Rick delivers straight talking, easy to follow, honest, professional, calculated advice to all of his viewers from beginner to tour pro. This tried and tested method of coaching has helped many golfers achieve their personal goals and beyond.
If you see this Rob, great job. And Rick there is a mega gap in this kind of testing/thoughts on youtube. It's refreshing to get that from someone like Rob every now and then.
Yes I completely agree. He will be used again
Cheers buddy. Just trying to give an honest Lancastrian opinion
Having a player with a 90 mph driver swing actually conduct the review is brilliant. It provides a wide range of golfers to relate to the data produced by each review. The presentation is spot on. and the banter between Rob & yourself is both entertaining and informative at the same time. This type of "review" could easily transfer for reviews for all swing speeds. Many thanks.
Thanks for the opportunity again Rick. Loved every minute of that.
Swing felt amazing that day, thanks to your vlog on "Strike your Irons Awesome Everytime".
#topcoach
Every time I watch Rob play, I wait for that (tiny) signature double-bounce just before he plays his shot. Good shots, Rob!
Nice job again Rob, keep up the mid-handicap swing'n
I bought these, & thick body doesn't bother me @ all.
Some of the straightest & best hits I've hit.
Flattered here peeps. Thanks.
I'm a golf geek, plain and simple.
Just wish the body could do what the mind knows. I'd be much better then.
Glad you find the input useful, and my barmy humour just about acceptable.
He is crushing those irons! Great job man! Rick, please invite him back for more reviews.
Rick this is a great idea testing with a mid handicapper, which most of are. Please have him try other clubs as well
Great work
Bob
Yes Rob will 100 feature again very soon
Absolutely love the idea of a mid handicap test absolutely fantastic rick
Come on Rick, both Rob and yourself need to review the new big Bertha irons 2019.
Although we are only seeing a 7 yards gain, the Big Bertha was compared with Rob's game iron. So distance vs consistency is a factor in this comparison as well. I tried these irons, and they are massive in terms of distance.
Thanks for the test chaps, refreshing to see the "normal" golfer trying the kit out
Good content. I would like to see a similar videos putting different handicaps in potentially suitable models, and see if numbers could influence players out of their current sets.
That double club spin at 1:23
Best videos on club testing on the web. Great job guys,
Suiting players to golf clubs, sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.good review and honest feedback, cheers.
Hey Rick it seems that you've forgotten another type of golfer for these irons. It's the senior who has lost club head speed but still wants to be in the game and look like a player. These suit me just fine. My handicap is higher than robs. But I hit the ball like I did ten years ago. You can't do better than that. Thanks
Gerry Bennett yes sir. I went from firm X-16s to these in A flex and very happy. Couldn’t find a SW worth the cost, so I went with CBX wedges.
In regards to the whole "not two clubs more stuff" they say it could be. So for me only having an average of 73-75mph swing, it's never gonna be a massive effect that you will all see. But my grouping distances with irons 5-9 are actually quite close. So for me personally there is a difference.
Now for the likes of a few of the "bombers" that work in that particular American Golf shot, when I spoke to them afterwards, they saw a massive difference in both height and distance. They go "warp factor snot" at all their shots.
So for me, personally, despite them looking as chunky as my ex, they went out there for me.
The only downside is the lack of feel on impact.
Great comment
Was it more like hitting a hybrid than an iron? I noticed in the video you said you didn't feel it after you hit the shot. I like to be able to feel my mishits in order to get better as a player, so the lack of feel is kind of discerning. Also, does it really look that big in person? In the video it looks HUGE and I wonder if the weight of the club felt different from your current gamer because of it.
The result was like a hybrid! It's actually like looking at a skinny hybrid with that 7 iron. You feel you can't miss it.
In terms of a miss hit, I did know when I had hit it wrong, don't get me wrong but unless you fat the shot, I couldn't feel the club twist at all. That was a positive.
I would put them in my bag, I truely would. But are they worth £899? No! That's gonna put folk off. Especially how quick companies release clubs these days. Was only start of the year they said the X2 Hot was the longest irons they had made.
Great video as always Rick Full of great information and honesty. Keep it up mate. Also great to have a handicap golfer there for his views as well.
This is the way to go when reviewing game improver irons. The views of someone who does not hit the middle most times are great and more realistic for the vast majority of people who would buy these types of irons. Having said that those were some nice shots as they were all down the throat of the green. More Rob please!
Cheers Nicholas. It's nice to know my input is useful.
I just try to do simplistic, to the point opinions. ☺
Great video rick, love the addition of Rob
He's a good one
Cheers Paul
So Big bertha (BB) is about 7 yards longer (carry distance) which is probably only ½ a club. The spin on BB is down about 1000rpm which is important for mid to high handicappers. They have trouble stopping the ball on the green. BB balls roll 3-4 yards further. I suspect if rob hit his 6 iron it would fly further than the BB 7 iron, would have similar spin and would stop in a similar distance to the BB 7 iron. Maybe you could say Calloway have made a short 6 iron rather than a long 7 iron.
That’s what I liked about the SLDR irons. They went a long way, but they maintained a decent amount of spin.
This is a great review. You did a great a job Rob!!! Rick should use Rob more often for reviews to get what a normal amateur's feedback is when hitting the new clubs that are coming out. I love Rick's review, but most of us don't hit it like Rick. I know I don't. So, seeing a real amateur's feed back is very beneficial for everyone. I think.
Thanks Mike. Means a lot does that.
Just trying to give honest feed back.
I agree with you Rick, they looking to big from the back but good distance. Callaway needs to redo this irons again they look ugly
Love to see Rob trying Big bertha vs TM RSi1.
Thanks for your great work.
Something like the old cobra baffler 22* hybrid iron, that's blending my cobra driver and woods into my irons. Same concept but doesn't pretend anything, I like it.
Great video Rick and the inclusion of a mid- handicapper, albeit one that has a better dispersion than a tour player 😳, is an even better bonus to give us mere mortals a better insight
I regularly play with a 5 handicapper (currently using fitted Original taylormade TP MC's) that carries a 7 iron max.140 yards who feels he is restricting his possibilities of getting reeeeally low by his shortness with his clubs so you only feel that this type of iron will surely improve his game if they are as consistent as his current set
Keep up the good work mate 👍
Looking to buy new irons, Nike & Taylor Made current faves but this has just been added to my list.. Great video.
Great review, love the mid handicapper reviews, get Rob to do more, thanks...
he hits the ball straighter then you rick ;) good stuff lads
Yes I'd agree Andy
Love the videos Rick, but wouldn't it make sense to compare to clubs that have more similar loft? They are both 7 irons but the lofts are much different, why not give Rob the 6 iron RAZR X iron which is 29 degrees of loft and compare it to the 7 iron Big Bertha. With a 1 degree difference in loft you could then look at other aspects of the clubs like the workability differences of the two.
Well done Rob some impressive hitting there
Hi Rick, love your vids... don't know if this has been asked before, but watching Rob's swing, it really doesn't look all that bad at all (Looks pretty darn good actually). Yet, his distance is a far cry from yours. What would you change in his swing that would allow him to create more club head speed/distance?
Good hits Rob. Love this perspective.
Rob did get better distance.but I also agree on looks
Great to see new face here.
Great video as usual.
They don't do a 3 iron in this Rick, however the 4 iron is 20.5 loft.
Enjoyed that video Rick well done something different with one of your pupils trying clubs. Nice repetitive swing for a 13hcp by the way. 👍
Thanks Dave. He's got a good Swing
Awesome idea! I'm more inclined to listen to everyday players like Rob on clubs like this than pro's. Pro's can kind of hit everything.
Hey Rick and Rob, thank you so much for your videos, they are really amazing. Including the opinion of a mid-handicapper is the best invention since Coca-Cola ;-).
You guys gave the Callaway XR a 9 in your review. What grade would you give the big bertha?
Rob, which iron would you prefer in therms of forgivingness and distance, excluding the chunky look of the big bertha head? (I have a similar club head speed as you). Would you say that the Callaway XR are the best irons that you tested in all you reviews so far?
Beste Grüße aus Deutschland :-)
Ben
I call bs on Rob being off 13. I'm off 14 and my swing is a bajillion times worse. his swing is awesome. where does he go wrong?
It's the distance he lacks but he is still a good, consistently straight golfer. We don't know about his short game, so he may be lacking in that area.
Probably putting or reading the lie/wind factors like most players.
Rick, how do you compare these with the same tech in the Callaway XR? I bought the Berthas and suddenly am thinking I want the XR's. Feels like I have more control with them. Thank you!
Get rob to test g30s, ap1s and rsi1s! I currently use the same clubs as him so I'd love him to be my guinea pig :) although I don't play off 13...
Notice the difference in backspin his tour irons spin more! What's the point in hitting it higher and longer if you can't hold the green.
Nice 1, look forward to it
Thanks Marc
I know this is an old video, but that Callaway looks like a close look-a-like to the old Nike Slingshot.
Great job Rob
Say Rob: How about doing a video on the New Wilson FG V 6 irons and telling us all what shafts you are using in them>>>>Thanks...Ali
Well played Rob !! Step aside Finchy...
Haha. Better Swing than Finch?
RickShielsPGAGolf There is no such thing !
How come the Razors were carrying less, yet rolling out less if the Big Bertha is flying higher with less loft?
I have a combo set with my irons rsi tp form pw-5iron 4-3 in the areobruner
Can you do a video of Rob hitting the Nike Vapor pro Driver?
It seems just like the Ft-ibrid that was released 4 or so years ago. Just a new name.
What do you guys think of these versus the apex 19 for high handicappers?
Test it up against the old big berth's, i reckon the difference is minimal
Excellent!
Thanks
Oh and I'm a 13hcp for those asking.
Not for long
Great job, Rob. I'm an 8hcp and I doubt I could hit balls that well with the camera rolling.
Lol it ain't too much of a fuss. I'm used to doing presentations and did some tv work the other year. So I just treat it all as a standard conversation
Rob, what would you grade these? Bought the Big Berthas, but now I think I want the XR's. They have a better feel, personally. Similar handicap and would appreciate the input. Thank you!
Thomas Hodge hey buddy. I hit the Big Bertha about 18 months back with Rick. The video is on his channel. They do go long, no question but the XR's I feel are in a different class. If your wanting to "upgrade" so to speak the sure, go to the XR's, as the are newer on the design front. All depends on what your looking for really. I have the XR Pro set, and Damn I love them, Especially for distance. But having cranked lofts, that'd always be the case.
Great idea
Please get your hands on the Nike vapor irons!
I'm trying I'm trying I'm trying ha
Hi Rick,
Can you review the new big bertha hybrids please
Regards
Marc
Marc Taplin Yes they are next on my wish list
Rick, you're the first I've seen with the sense to have a game improvement club reviewed with the participation of a game improver. Any other such reviews, the higher handicapper might as well not have been there. Much as I enjoy your reviews, you know what you're talking about, but you aren't going to get much of anything out of Big Bertha irons. We game improvers don't hit 5 irons 200 yards, even downhill with a gale at our backs. Well done, may common sense prevail.
sledge1960 I hit my 5 iron 200 if I flush it and I'm around a 11.
stackleft I hit my 5i 190 +/-, but I'm 28 hcp. wtffff
I'm off 24 and hit a 5 iron 190 all day long🤔
Hi I'm looking to get fitted can u help where to go in Derbyshire not sure which club is for me I play of 9 handicap thanks
Rob seems like a lovely guy, he should feature in your videos a little more.
Create a playlist mid handicap
Rick looks almost unrecognisable without his beard 😲
If he is a13 handicap what does that equate to in raw score for 18 holes?
mid 80's on a good day in theory
Rather have more control than distance
Another great review and very good to see a performance review by someone with similar clubhead speeds as my own... Also would not have thought higher ball flight with stronger lofts... that's a pretty good improvement, higher ball flight, a little more distance and a little increase clubhead speed... thanks again... (OBTW: I think this guy is a sandbagger, very good ball striker)… :-)
go to north wilts golf club and play the full 18
I’m looking for this set anywhere I can’t find it anywhere
Callaway preowned website. That way you know they're real.
How. to. buy?
Loving this #originalcontent
Haha. Are we allowed to say that on this channel? Ha
I don’t think there is any difference due to tech, only from de-lofting
30 deg is a 6 iron...
So, does Rick hit the ball 40 yards further than Rob? Geesh
Awesome review bro...i like how you actually used an amateur to test out that two clubs longer theory...horrible looking club though and especially for the price that they go for smh dont know too many people who are going to pay 800$ for irons this ugly lol keep up the good work rick
Knowing you knowing me Ha ha.
Difference of 2mph Max is not too impressive
make a 1 iron
Bringing up an old video...no way this dude is a 13 handicap...single digits for sure.
I-bird?! Copyright
what is he off???
He says 13 right at the start.
Rick, sorry mate but its obvious that a longer club with less loft will travel further , this test is pointless.
If you wanted a fair comparison why not alter the loft of the clubs so they are the same.
I still play these clubs!!! How sad is that!
man, nice swing for a 13.
Brid
Jesus just hit the ball
Rob Potter talks WAY too much.
