- After a 9 month break from the trail, I head back to finish off the final 700 miles of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. In this episode, something unimaginable happens...let's call it a WHAMMY!
I designed the bike that I'm riding, the Priority 600x with Pinion and Gates drivetrain www.prioritybi...

Nomad...sun, wind, water, sky, earth...splender...joy.
I am 73and hope to venture again...rememberance too is a joy.
Peace and joy.
Lesson learned. Pack that extra belt. Glad you made it as far as you did.
You Ryan are the king of positivity. 2 seconds after your belt snaps you are smiling and thinking positive thoughts. Thanks for busting out and hugging that old tree. I would have done the same thing. Old trees like that deserve respect. Especially that one that survives in solitude. Even if it didn't go as expected. You still provide a lesson on how to handle a disappointing situation.
Ryan.....I have told you this before......I live by the Ocean. The desert and the plains creep me out! Having said that, once again, your film footage is extraordinary! It's one of the few reasons I can continue to watch you brave the elements in misery! The fact that you find and interview such kind people is just an added bonus! You have endured more character tests in one week than most people will in a lifetime!! Congratulations on finishing!! DD
No extra belt. That’s not like you. Oops. Heres to the colorado trail trip! Stoked. 👍🏻❤️
Educational!! Good example of what happens when you're not prepared!!
We lived in the great state of New Mexico. The people you highlighted are types that we ran into as well. While there are “Good Samaritans” everywhere, New Mexico seems to have an abundance or them. Awesome scenery. Thank you for sharing the adventure.
Another Great Duzer Adventure in the history books...I love all the extreme weather you got on this trip, just another week in paradise on our beautiful planet Earth...Most people really are wonderful aren't they?
"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood": one for a lifetime of solitary adventures, one for raising a family with a dog ... two bad at times we can´t put parallel paths in our lives .... Thanks for all the quality videos you produce. (Funny coincidence that you quoted a different part of the same poem here - I had already made my note.)
I almost feel like you packed a month's worth of adventures into that one week with all of challenges you faced. In the end, you ran into some good samaritans, smiling with your head held high. Thank you for always keeping positive, and always inspiring us to get out there!
That's what you call a FULL WHAMMY! That trip threw everything at you and you crushed it. Positive attitude for positive results (all the good people out there helping). Keep the videos coming.
Now I just can't wait for you to go to Sweden...Already thinking about watching this trip
Hey! I met Pam and Walter on Idaho Hot Springs Mountain Bike Loop in 2015!
Call it (belt breaking) a BLAMMY. Wow! What an incredible adventure and I've watched almost every bike ride you have ever posted. Ryan, you are not a super hero; get a cape.
What an awesome adventure! Trudging your bike through the snow looked absolutely brutal! I watch your videos and see how you connect with so many folks along the way. It makes me realize that there are far more good people in this world than bad people. Sometimes I think we all forget that, but your adventures are a nice reminder!
I so enjoy your positive deposition, thank you for sharing. As for good people on the road there are many willing to lend a helping hand. I had just ridden a local trail heading home about 3 blocks from home when a sudden rainstorm hit, a rarity in Southern California. Three people stopped to offer me rides and coats. It took me longer to thank them than ride home. Good people are out there, thanks for highlighting what is right in the world.

Thank you for inspiration ☺️
It's taken me a long time to reply to this video. This is probably my favorite video you've done ever and I've watched a lot of them. The reason is that, you're like super hero to me. You go on incredible runs, travel to amazing places and ride your bike in amazing places incredible distances. I can barely walk a hundred steps. You're an incredible inspiration to me. Seeing that things don't always go your way, that you can be frustrated and say a bad word, they make you more human and I feel closer to you. When I try to ride my bicycle and fall off twice like I did last weekend, seeing how you cope with your whammy, helps me to cope with mine. I don't think less of you for this video, I think more. Keep being awesome.
Thank you!! I appreciate this response
There is just nothing like these videos. I am an avid cyclist, I often ride up to 100 miles at a time. Its so refreshing to see someone appreciating the little things that you sometimes experience on the road but cant really explain the beauty of to the naked eye. Best UA-cam channel ever!
I like your videos very much. This is the first time when I watch videos on normal speed. And you know what? it's not boring! 😀
I love hearing this, thanks!
So sorry about your broken Belt. You will be back to finish. Great adventure and thanks for having us along.
We need more people like you in this world!
There is a lot of things we can all learn from you Ryan, but if there is ONE THING that i have to choose that would be the approach you have towards problems. Your attitude towards any issue is admirable. Good luck out there.
I’m really sorry Ryan that you couldn’t finish your journey. Especially after such a hard work. But I like your short stop for no reason. Just to enjoy quiet moment. We are surrounded by noise all the time.. I live in a small town. Luckily not to far away from woods. I bought a hammock and I take a bike or make a short hike to those wooden hills. Hang the hammock between trees with protective straps not damage trunk. I have coffee in thermos and good book. But most of the time I’m just laying in my hammock and looking to the top of the trees and really enjoying the quiet time. Love your videos Ryan. J. 🙂
Beautiful recap at the end of this video, gave me chills. The tree in the middle of this video, the way you described it? I think it represents you. You are both weathered by the wind & sun and are rooted and grounded in your spirit. Your soul makes the universe very happy and I think the tree was hugging you back in that moment. You and that tree are very special indeed. Ride on Ryan, Ride on.
Wow, thank you! I always appreciate your thoughtful comments
Bummer, sorry to see the whammy. Chin up , you done good. Thank you for the armchair adventure.
No spare belt Ryan? *shakes head* ;) We have all been there I'm sure! I'm a chain man myself and always carry a spare as well as a link, you just never know the minute! 101 mile ride today so I wouldn't want to be caught 50 miles from home! Loved this series, so many great people including yourself of course!
Just watched the entire series thank you for keeping me motivated to ride and take care of myself
Thanks for taking the time to watch this! Happy trails my friend
WOW.. Not only did you have a great adventure.. you always are positive.. Meet great people.. it sadden's me that 12 people disliked your video.. Crazy... Thanks for glimpse of another great adventure.. Your a Great Story Teller...
We've loved the whole series! Sorry about the Big Whammy! But it made the adventure, and your story, that much more interesting. Love how your personality, humor, positivity, and optimism shine through all the hardships. We love you! Pamela and John from Durango
It was a doozey for sure ;)
What a great positive human being you are! Please keep showing us how to be positive!
I like that you hugged that tree. I'm sure the tree appreciated that hug, bro. And man, I really like how you recovered after that catastrophic belt drive failure. You really looked on the bright side, reflected positively on it; that's way cool.
Your answering the question? What's the meaning of life? To Live, Experience,Learn And Survive Till our last Breath Brother 😎✌️🙏❤️
What an emotional end, to what I don't think is truly the end. I know the third time will be the charm.
Its really important to try and think positive in difficult times. It's easy to get into a negative head space.
It's wonderful you had more trail magic and you were able to get into Silver City, safely.
I look forward to what your adventures you have in store.
Yo! A hardware store that supplies tractor equipment/farming stuff should have an extra belt for you in the future! A little moped trick 😉
I love log!
What a sweet tree (12:30)! 🌳 Who knows what the story is, but I’d like to believe it’s someone’s very special “Thinking Tree” - New Mexico edition. ⛅️
Some people might have hung themselves with the broken belt.
But there even could have been something positive from that and that is that it broke again.
Great trip Ryan and" Great Tree".
Again, I thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos of this trip.
Thank you for this and your other videos.
Too bad about the belt drive but I think you handled it great.
Luckily it was just a whammy, not a crashy.
Ah! New Mexico's vortex got you! Whatever that means. I loved all your New Mexico videos.
In 2002, my wife and I, wanted to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary in the mountains of Colorado. We had never been anywhere, so we had no idea what to expect. We entered, New Mexico, through, Pecos Texas, and we loved it. It was scary for us because once we passed Roswell, the landscape was awe inspiring, and lonely in a way. One of the things we noticed was that the landscape was so lonely, that the deer had to hang out with cattle, and the highway shoulder lane had tall weeds growing on it.
The most beautiful part of that trip, for us, was the road from Vaughan, NM to Las Vegas NM, via Pastura and Tecolotito, and Raton Pass.
Beautiful landscape. Now we want to see, NM, the way Ryan does.
We celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary in the San Isabel national forest, above Rye, Colorado, not far from Bishop Castle. We've gone back almost every year since then, now we hope to do it on a bike.
Thanks Ryan, we love your videos.
Being a biker I thought I would be coming to this channel to watch you ride bikes mainly. But after watching your videos I know I come to this channel to see how positive and amazing human interactions you have.
Aww, love that! Thanks for your comment. I’ve met a lot of incredible people out there. Cheers
Hey I hear swedish! And you speak it very good! If you ever find yourself in the more southern parts of Sweden, there ´s alway food and shelter at my house. Keep the adventures coming my man!
Its always funny how things work out, no matter how prepared you are its never enough. My first bike packing trip I ever did, was a 3 day ride on the GAP, did it with no spare tires or spare parts of any kind and never had a problem. The following year my friends and I tried to do the Erie canal, brought spares tires, spare spokes, just in case. For some reason managed to get 4 flats in the first day and had to abandon the trip on the 2nd day because of continued mechanical issues.
I love watching your video's keep up the great work
You make me so happy. Lovely to see you like this. The areas in the multiple videos. Magnificent. You are at your best when you are outside. Keep it up buddy. It makes me eager to go on the next trip again.
Thanks! And I agree, I’m at my best outside
Wow! What a bummer Ryan. Devo’d for you mate. Bet you won’t leave home without a spare belt from now on. Looking forward to the next adventure mate.
Rolling with the punches. Very inspiring ❤️
Thank you for all your videos. You inspired me to take my first 100 km ride yesterday. It was awefully awesome. Your videos motivate me to get on the bike and ride.
Congrats
Thanks for taking us on your journey!
Somewhere around the 21:00 mark I hear the foreshadowing... ssshhh... Don't tell me what happens, still watching...
Wow what a great trip !!! Love your positive additude even in the face of diversity ❤
Wow. Very motivated and positive person to follow. What a inspiration and keep fighting!
DUZER! you inspired me to ride 25mi yesterday! lol first time ever.. and I think im hooked!
Thank you. I enjoy biking. I have some new words to use. Whammies, flatties, and crashies.
I am thankful for your expressions of gratitude. I’ve been on the lookout for people who inspire me to be more thankful. There is power in thanks-giving.
I love your positive spirit!
Oh man, that sucks. Your belt went on similar terrain to the belt that went on mine. After dealing with Gates and getting some answers, my belt was getting worn after 5000km and the tension was quite high. The teeth ended up shearing on a 4" section on a small climb of singletrack. Luckily I did keep a spare belt and got to learn how to split the frame on the 600 on the fly. New lesson... always bring a spare. :)
When you broke your belt I was certain you had a spare if not two extra belts. I was shocked you didn't bring an extra. I bet that taught you a lesson. Lol. Love your videos
It sure did, ha!
Amazing content man, I have been watching your channel for about 2 months now and Thanks to you I bought my First mountain bike after at least 10 years of riding , now I am back at it. Thanks a gain, motivational 100%
Nice with the swedish Ryan!! You've got many talents! You are a perfect inspiration when I'm Zwiftning
No whammies
No Fatties
No Crashies
No drive belt Breakies
Carry more water, don’t rely totally on your invincibleness. The empty container is not a real burden in areas of plenty.
It's good to see you again...Ryan. Greetings from Indonesia
Hey Ryan, an app that a lot of Thru- hikers use is called Gut hooks. they can mark water sources, great camping, sites etc. might be a good thing to keep handy in those really desert isolated areas. there is also a bikepacking version called, bikepacking guides. I have it downloaded but i have yet to use it. might be worth looking into.
Thanks Ryan for reminding me; there are some (actually a lot of) good people out there… Keep up your great work spreading hope and enthusiasm for adventure and loving life!1 🤘
Thank you for sharing all the ups and downs of this trip. This was one of the most difficult trips you have every had and you champion through it all with a smile. I would have given up at the mud, but you washed it off and continued on. It is amazing how the trail will always provide and the kind heartiness of people. Keep on biking and hope to see you at Ragbrai.
Plus side of a spare belt; weighs less, not greasy, doesn't wear on the bags, (Easier to install? Don't know, don't have any experience with'em).
Spare chain parts (or whole); can get them damned near anywhere, replace the whole thing or a piece of it, cheap.
I have no choice in the matter, not rich enough for belt drive internal gears etc. If I did have the choice .... I would have to think long and hard about it after seeing this.
Thank You Ryan, Your vid's inspire my aging self.
12:44 Tree hug; there was something very primal I felt with that tree hug. Life is so beautiful, even just watching and vicariously living it through others. I can't wait to get my own adventure bike. I'm working hard! It's coming soon... Thank you Ryan✌🏾
Oh man love your positivity and laughter in these situations!
Good one buddy. Tough trip but no denying it was a true adventure.
"It's been a Duzer!" ... So, any plans to go back and finish up the ride? Like to see you and the Priority at the border!
I won’t go back just to finish off the final 100, only if I do the whole thing again!
Yes! In Tucson Arizona Desert 🏜️. Water, Hydration and Nutrients mixed into your water bottle are important! °120 Hot 🥵 is My Limit for a Ride! 🤔
Such an amazing adventure! I'm so glad I was able to adventure along with you. Á'héé'héé (thank you) for sharing. I hope your next adventure will take you right into the middle of the Navajo Nation 😊
If you so happen to be riding by Red Valley / Cove, AZ area.. you have a place to stay with my family in Cove🙌
Take care and continue to be awesome!
Late May is already the hot season. June is the hottest month in NM. In July the Monsoon comes (hopefully) and that cools everything down.
Ryan…as always, fantastic job on documenting your journey! However, since crashies, and whammies fall into the same category (in my opinion)…I thought I would make a suggestion that you change it (which I know would be hard to do!) to “No Crashies, No Mechanicals, No Flatties.” :) Cheers!
I’ve done the walk of shame with a broken belt as well. However, I’ve broken one belt over 15 years of belt drives but have broken a few chains so there’s that.
I'm embarrassed to say it, but when you hugged that tree, I broke into tears. For some reason, that was really meaningful to me. Thanks for sharing that with us!
A long way with beautiful natures
Your struggles help alot of other people through their struggles.
I enjoy your adventure I get inspired to travel and meet new people and pleases
That shot of you biking away from the tree, beautiful, priceless.
Uh, Ryan... you need to do a tour of Sweden and perhaps bring back one of those sled dogs for Mira to play with? ;) And to accompany you on your adventures, of course!
When I bought my Apollo I also bought an extra belt, and immediately hung it up on the peg board.
It's now going into my cargo pack... Immediately!!!! Thanks for the life's lesson, Duzer 🙂👍
You handled that like a champ, love your positivity even in messed up situations 👏🏻
You had your share of adversity in this one. Enough to write a book
It's a good reminder that while the belt drives are amazing tech, and probably 1000x more reliable than a chain, they're not indestructible and it's important to have a backup. Thanks for sharing another great adventure Ryan.
11 minutes in I could feel your passion for life, nature, and your adventures.
Thank you for sharing them with us.
you are a huge inspiration!!!! i'm in the process of selling all my shit whilst living in a tent, and then once that stuff is gone..... adventure of a lifetime!!!! love your energy dude.
Last I spoke to you I was getting ready for my cross country bike ride.....well it got stolen so I finally have another trek 830 antelope got it new derailleurs tires built a carrier and am off in March from Maine to Cali then back. Thanks for all this motivation. Your drone skills are amazing by the way
Have a great time out there!!
I'm in Texas. If ever you get stranded in Texas, I'd drop everything to help you.
Love your stuff Ryan, glad you're safe!
What a nightmare! Glad you survived.
Oh, Ryan. Oh goodness. This adventure is full of twists and turns. I was shocked when the belt snapped. I was NOT expecting that kind of a whammy.
Wow, a cuss word! Who *are* you!? Sorry for the whammies but I guess it just means you get to tackle the Land of Enchantment again. Thanks, as usual, for sharing the joy and pain.
“ at least, it’s beautiful.“ Love your positivity!
Always!
I'm not sold on your drive train at all. My chain broke a few weeks ago and I fixed it right there on the side of the road with a chain tool and a master link. Plus, bike shops carry new chains..... But, your belt is light. It would have been easy to carry a spare. It's got that going for it. However, a master link is still much lighter and not bulky at all.
This was a inner spirit testing trip….👏👏👏 well done , I’m. It sure I could have got though that . But I love your journeys ,always inspiring and I honestly can’t say I have been anywhere and meT people like you do, maybe it’s your personality 🤷 maybe I’m just a weird grumpy old man that people avoid 😂🤷
Bravo Ryan! This series has been on par with your "Baja Divide" series and in some ways even better! I was thoroughly entertained every episode. Thank you for doing what you do!
Man, that was good! Thanks for taking me along. You're so good at this. O.K. you're a bit goofy. I don't care. You're still the best one out there in UA-cam land, riding, adventuring, and putting together wonderful videos. I can't tour right now, so watching your videos is the next best thing to being out there doing it myself.
Glad to see another "mature" woman on the trail. It does help to have someone to share it with. My husband and I are riding the GDMBR south from Whitefish this week to Silverthorne. We did part of it in 2019 and can't wait for this ride.
I recognize that sound: the sound of your tires rolling over the gravel trail surface, the wind, and nothing else but the thoughts in your head. I’m really looking forward to my next bike trip.
Thank you Ryan
Excellent video, bro hug your way! I start in Roosville this week.
