Your last point is really important. I see it across social media, on the names of photographers at trade shows, promoted by lighting companies. They're all selling an imaginary career. I used to do a fair bit of work for a few photography magazines and quite often you'd be with a reader as they shadow a 'pro' photographer (and I'd be there to capture the BTS images). And to be quite frank a lot of the men really wanted an excuse to look at half naked women. I always think it's a tell tale sign that you're not really a photographer when you claim to photography 'people' and love the human form and your portfolio is ONLY half naked women.
For a while I was watching a lot of gear reviews and had gear envy. I'll admit in the beginning I was one of those who either went out bought something because of a certain photographer had the item or I'd get frustrated because lack of funds. Finally came to my senses and realized it's not always about the gear. We have to put in the work. Great word brother!

You comment about taking photos of pretty girls, I follow a guy who does absolutley amazing work, but I dont ever seem to find him working for big clients, just doing photos for the girls who want them. But it all makes sense now, no one is really paying to get photos of half nake girls unless, its for an adult page which I suspect would not pay that well anyway. The kit question is so frustrating. I do spend my time sometimes looking at camera websites, but not to look at cameras or lenses, I pine over how expensive c stands are and other kit that imo is really needed because it saves you sooooooo much time and frustration in building your creative scene.....I don't think photographers talk enough about the various ways they use little knick knacks such as superclamps, c stands, etc. Im sure there are things that I haven't even heard about that would save you time in many ways... I would love a video breaking down that type of kit.
So what do you do when the niche you have is currently sidelined by the pandemic? I just started in December of last year and purchased equipment to do sports portraits for high school and younger kids. I'm lucky enough to have a job and I was doing this as a side business as I have been doing mainly high school sports photography for over 10 years. I have been looking at your food photography channel for a couple months as I have taken pictures of my own food before and it's something that I can learn in the safety of my home. I also enjoy the way you present your information honestly and direct to the point.
Booking cheap clients because you are afraid to lose them... i did that all the time at the start and found out that cheap clients bring more cheap clients. Ofc to years later i managed to make my own studio but with a lot of hard work and sleepless nights. And now COVID :P
I can't remember how to write it, but this is it : (scrolldown a bit) www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/tilt-shift-lenses2.htm In a nutshell it is the principle that let you determine and control the depth of field with a tilt shift lens. It takes a while to get ones head around the principle. After a while you get it. With mirrorless cameras and focus peaking, it is much easier to visualize the effect.

Was there ever a point in your career where you genuinely though about giving up, and just keeping it as a hobby, even though you knew you were better than a hobby camera club photographer? Or really thought about giving up your commercial photography dream, to settle for local photography just to make a few quid? What helped change your mind?
@@TinHouseStudioUK I know that feeling, but I also know that where I live clients havs laughed in my face for tryimg to I charge what I should be charging. I've had to lower my rates to get work here, as for licence fees, they don't understand them either and think im trying to con them, (brands) and run off to get wedding photographers to try do the job instead. Stuck in that middle ground I think.
i bet there is a chin under that beard,. my advice is to learn photography, dont learn gear. stay away from the my lens is bigger then yours discussion.
mmmmm...usually I agree with everything you say. BUT...the last point....I see PLENTY of photographers making money ALL OVER THE WORLD doing portrait / "modeling" photography, turning it into massive sponsorships and a thriving business. Doing books for beginning models or whatever else in that genre. Also you are speaking from the aesthetic pov of someone in the UK. IN the USA we have this same issue. People taking issue with photographing models or whatever. You need to come to Brazil or go to Italy....where these semi puritanical points are a non issue and in fact CAN make you money. IF you are good at it. How do you get good at it? By working with hundreds of people and shooting until your fingers can't press the button anymore. But...oh yeah thats "heartbreaking to see" ...OK.

Sadly I think the only thing that you can do in such a situation is to sit and wait.
