it was a great idea to have young & old choirs backing the band, because the song applied to everybody, no matter what age!! whoever wrote this song had an inspired moment!!
A beautiful song. Live and love the living years. My wife coded twice in the ER in June of this year. 80 days later she is coming home to me this week. Live the living years.
Mike co-wrote the song and lyrics. He was playing guitar and pictured with his actual son in the video. This song has affected and inspired millions. What a great piece of music. (the break Genesis took in the late '70s coincidently gave us some AMAZING music.....think Phil Collins solo work and all the other wonderful tunes Mike + Mechanics recorded!)
Sarah, everybody feels this song in one way or another. "I wasn't there that morning when my father passed away." Yeah, I missed my dad by a few hours. That was several years before this song came out. These guys put it perfectly in the message. We all need to connect before we die. Great reaction as always.
Brilliant song and lyrics by Mike Rutherford a founder member of Genesis. He wrote the lyrics as a tribute to his father and their difficult relationship. Paul Carracks unique voice adds depth to the message and turns the track into a timeless classic!
Mike Rutherford co-wrote this with BA Robertson after they realised their fathers had died at a very similar time then when they were working with Paul Carrack (proud to say he's from my home city of Sheffield 😁) he told them his own dad died when he was only 11.
My dad will have passed 2yrs ago this coming Dec. It's songs like this that I grew up with, that helped me make sure I never left anything unsaid. Dad wasn't always a perfect, or even a good dad, but he loved us & did his best. I know he had many many regrets at the end, but he was surrounded by his 3 daughters & I hope he understood that we didn't blame him, and that we loved him. Still hurts like hell though
Mike Rutherford of Genesis created the band as a side project during Genesis down time. The singer, Paul Carrack has been in many bands, Ace being one of them. He is, also, a solo artist with a great catalogue....
Hello Sara. I have to say i love your reaction..why...because it is so emotional and genuine. The emotion and joy that you show is so natural. This song is a fine example of making you feel this and more. It is a Universal message for all manking. Don't wait for tomorrow to tell or show somone how you feel . The moment is now. Love and kindness is the way for all even though we fail at times. When it matters and when the time comes it is the truth, a way for us all to find the reason why we are all here. To the light we must all walk to. Well done Sara. Your a lovely person with an equally lovely soul
@sarahdengler, I've seen so many reaction videos but you're my new favourite. You seem to really feel the music deeply and honestly and you have a very warm presence. Thanks for your great content!
You know of the group Genesis with Phill Collins well this is Mike Rutherford of the same group who both went and did their own side gigs Mike is the guitarist in both cases
Your reaction is pretty much what most of us felt when we heard this the first time and still feel now, some 40 years later. It's a perfectly written and performed song by excellent musicians. Their next song on your list should be Silent Running.
This was an excellent one for you to take on. I remember when this first hit radio - it was instantly huge. I was selling compact discs at the time and it was extremely popular. I have been fighting an incurable, but treatable, cancer for 6 years. Many good things have happened in that time, especially how the relationships with each of my family members has grown. Right now, today, each of us has one less day to go than we did yesterday. Make the most of the day ahead.
I loved how you were so quickly swept away by the magic quality of this song. I have always loved everything about it and it does apply to everyone. Sarah, have you reacted to "Monsters" by James Blunt. In a way, it is the opposite of this song. Let me know if you agree with my opinion. Also, I never saw your long hair before. You looked especially lovely today. Thank you for remining me of this Classic !!😊
Mike is the guitar player from Genesis / Phil Collins. This is the first Solo Album. Background The song was inspired by Mike Rutherford and B.A. Robertson realizing their fathers had died around the same time, and they later learned singer Paul Carrack's father had died when he was young, as well.[6] Rutherford said:[6] Being of similar age, we both came from an era where our parents had lived through two world wars, when young men wanted to be like their fathers - wear the same clothes, do the same things. But then there was a huge change and our generation wanted to be anything but their fathers. It wasn't our parents' fault, there was just a big social change. Pop music had come along, The Beatles, denim trousers... for the first time, teens had their own culture. That's how our generation couldn't really talk to our parents in the same way. So we had the idea of writing a song about how you never really talk to your father, and you miss out on these things.
The song was co-written by B.A. Robertson and Mike Rutherford, who had both lost fathers that had server in WW2. They later found out that Paul Carrack had lost his father when he was young.
The song always gets me I wasn't there the day my father died he was 61 year 1991 i was in California and I had to fly back to Maine and the movie on board that day was the premiere of Ghost and I couldn't understand why everybody on the plane wasn't as sad as I was thinking that they must have known I lost my dad today which obviously is funny and not the case I love your reactions you're always so real I know that you're a beautiful soul and keep on spreading that music around God bless❤ I would love to see you do with Kansas song what's on my mind for the wall thanks for your reaction😊
Not really sure if you have heard of the supergroup Genesis that Phil Collins was part of for many years. If you have heard of Genesis then you may be aware of their bass guitarist, a tall, thin bearded guy who goes by the name of Mike Rutherford. Mike and the Mechanics is his own band - his own personal project away from Genesis. He calls them The Mechanics but to be honest, they have had many different members come and go over the years. One such person is Paul Carrack who is a kind of musical journeyman, who has sung with different artists including Squeeze and has also done some solo tracks such as the song How Long. It's Paul Carrack who is singing on the Living Years video here. There's a Scottish guy called BA Robertson who I know was involved with the song. As I have mentioned, many members of The Mechanics have come and gone in the past but in more recent years (like the last decade) they seem to have a better consistency thanks to two of the current members sticking around for a while. First is Andrew Roachford, who previously tried going solo but in more recent years has found a new home with Mike and the Mechanics. One solo track of his that I would definitely recommend is Cuddly Toy by Roachford. The other new regular member is the current lead singer, a short Canadian guy who is also an actor and a comedian in Canada - his name is Tim. You may want to check out a more up-to-date song by Mike and the Mechanics that includes Tim & Andrew - the song is called The best is yet to come.
New to your channel but loved seeing your reaction to The Living Years. If you want something else to give you goosepimples try these from kd lang:- Crying from the 1990 Roy Orbison Tribute Concert Or Hallelujah from the 2010 Winter Olympics You're welcome 😁
My brother and I have always had so, so many issues. Many times I have tried to talk to him, but he holds onto so many stupid things, and won't move past them. How can you move forward if you won't do that? He is 16 years older than I am, and that has always been a huge gap anyway. I tried not long ago, again, and it just went nowhere. Sometimes all you can do is walk away. Sadly.
Have you started out by telling him how much you love him,and you don't like being so far out of his life. Let him know you still need your big brother. If you really want this, you will find away
I get so emotional when I listen to this song so many family members and friends have died in my life.
I can relate.
As your friends and family fall away, you realise how much you need to love those who are still with you ❤️ 😮😊
Yeah...this one is impossible to listen to without getting goosebumps. Beautiful tune with one heck of a powerful message.
it was a great idea to have young & old choirs backing the band, because the song applied to everybody, no matter what age!!

This is an absolute pop classic in which the lyrics and music become one. Of course the lyrics are incredible and resonate with everyone.
A very powerful emotional song. Always leaves me in tears. One of the greatest hits of all time. Affects us all.
Mike co-wrote the song and lyrics. He was playing guitar and pictured with his actual son in the video. This song has affected and inspired millions. What a great piece of music.

Some of the best lyrics ever written.....right there with 'Brothers In Arms' for me.
My Dad and I never had the best relationship, but I was absolutely crushed when he died 2 years ago. This song always sets me off like a waterfall.
This music was released in 1988, won several prices like Grammys, its a Masterpiece
I think you mean prizes, so I gave you a tick.😊
A beautiful, emotive song so brilliantly sung by Paul Carrack. Nothing wrong with crying, I do almost every time I hear it.
One of those rare times when the reacftion lives up to the greatness of the song. Well done

Paul Carrack sang "Tempted" when he was in Squeeze, and yes "How Long" with Ace.
@@surlechapeau Love that song and never knew it was Paul singing. Thanks!
Thanks for the info on the singer. He's great, and I never made the connection putting him in Ace. "How Long" is one of my all time favorites.
@@rk41gator you're welcome!
I tear up every time I hear this song 😢❤

At least you tried and that's the whole point of the song. So even if you do walk away you said what you needed to say and did not keep it in.
good one....
I wasn't there the moment my wife passed away.24 years ago.She was 28.
Hi Ms. Sarah, Thie is a Great Song with a Great Message.. ♠Mr.G..
This song and Harry Chapin's "Cats in the Cradle" are the two saddest songs of fatherhood ever written.
Sarah you look so sweet here
I miss those times. But how did it happen that Europe took a wrong turn? The question of questions.
I don't blame the generation before I blame the generation after but still the same result. Brilliant song so poignant and a good reaction.
Try Luther Vandross song ( Dance with my Father )
Nice channel 👍

Your audio is very low when you're speaking. I had to strain to hear what you were saying. Otherwise, loved your reaction.
Sorry about that
