In terms of character, spirit and willpower, Ocelot's the closest to Big Boss. If you think about it, he was the original template for the Les Infantes Terribles project - a child born to a professional soldier (Boss), and raised since childhood to become a SF operative.

MGS1: Liquid wanted to become the new Big Boss, but wanted revenge against his brother for inheriting his father's recessive genes (which we now know is not true) MGS2: Raiden started as Snake, and ended as the new "Solid Snake" so to speak MGS3: Naked Snake killed The Boss, thus transforming himself into Big Boss, her equal. MGS4: Solidus' body was mistaken for Big Boss's body allowing Big Boss to cheat death. Solid Snake and Big Boss reunite and Big Boss warns Snake not to end up like him, to live his life while he still has it. MGSV: The medic was MSF's best soldier. But to allow Big Boss to escape the hospital alive, they needed a decoy, so to speak. Then came the idea to create a phantom for Big Boss, equal to him by meme, not gene, and have him spread the legend of Big Boss until Zanzibar Land is built. Little did they know, Punished "Venom" Snake would form a legend of his own...

When Ocelot says "Don't worry he can handle it." because (in a slight 4th wall break) he knows YOU the player can handle it. The whole point of Venom was that, (assuming you created yourself with the character creator) YOU are Venom, and YOU are Big Boss's best man because YOU have been there with him his entire life because YOU played all the games. Before MGSV, you were by all accounts, ACTUALLY Big Boss because you played his life. The speech from Big Boss over from the cassette more than just wrapping up the plot points it is Hideo Kojima telling the fans of the series "I'm Big Boss and you are too, he's the two of us together. Where we are today we built it" and "Thank you my friend" for sticking with his series for this long, knowing he was on his way out of Konami. Kojima is telling the fans we are all as cool, idealistic and badass as Big Boss because we are his Phantom. Such a great twist

This ending can almost be interpreted as the fans being divided as Venom and Kaz. You can either say "Fuck you Kojima, why aren't we playing as Big Boss?" - similar to Miller's reaction to Big Boss abandoning him. Or you can say "I'll accept this. I'm Big Boss." - similar to Venom Snake getting that cassette tape.
there's always multiple interpretations but to me this was just a lazy way to add a twist on things for making a some what uninteresting story but that may be due to konami since he was in bad terms with them. I'm sure if he had more time he would make a much more compelling story with events that really fit and mattered more and use the actual big boss. I was hoping to see him slowly break and go some what evilness even if that definition is some what blurred in our own concept of there being no good or evil but besides that i know kojima wanted to remake mgs and change the adaption of it's story so big boss in MG2 would be completely different.
Fatal Existence I think he planned this from the beginning. The "what about him" is in the trailer as far back as 2013. Of course, we would have had a more satisfying ending, maybe this twist would have its presence explained, but alas.
For the confused lots out there regarding the whole plot of the game... 1) "Venom Snake" was a product of a plan between the Patriots that went their separate ways (Big Boss brought Ocelot and EVA with him while Zero withdrew into seclusion with Sigint and Paramedic handling stuff like the AI and genetic engineering for him) - all of them putting aside their differences and conflicts so they could protect the real Big Boss from the eyes of the world when he awakens from his coma. 2) Venom Snake served both as a "shield" for the real Big Boss (Protecting him from the eyes of the world as he builds Outer Heaven and until he is ready to reemerge into the world as Big Boss) and as a means to rebuild his "legend" as Big Boss himself discretely built the military nation of Outer Heaven. This would effectively sustain Big Boss' influence over the military world while Big Boss could secretly build his ideal "nation" of Outer Heaven. 3) "Venom Snake" was given hypnotherapy and strong verbal suggestions to convince him that he was Big Boss. His combat abilities were primarily explained by the fact that he was one of MSF's best soldiers. 4) "Venom Snake" becoming "Big Boss" is reminiscent of the events of MGS2 where the entire events of the Big Shell Incident was forged and orchestrated by the Patriots to duplicate the events of Shadow Moses in an attempt to test out the possibilities of creating a soldier like Solid Snake - essentially, the Patriots tried to turn Raiden into a "Snake". Unlike Raiden, however, Venom Snake was completely molded into "Big Boss" while Raiden broke free from being "controlled and manipulated" and both characters were essentially "avatars" of the player. 5) The origins of the Patriots AI were explained in the game. Essentially, they were distorted forms of The Boss' will - in the form of the AI Pod that sunk in Peace Walker. The AI Pod in question was retrieved and Strangelove in turn was pretty much the person that had created the various AIs governing the world with The Boss' "will" serving as the template. 6) Zero foreshadowed the creation of FOXDIE in his conversation with Skull Face as the former rejected the continued use of the vocal cord parasites as he claimed that genetic research has come to the stage of which he could target specific individuals and he has no interest whatsoever in using the parasites - as well as wanting to blur the borders between countries by uniting them under the same frame of thinking. All of this is reflected in Solid Snake's time as information control became a dominant theme in MGS2 and 4. 7) Zero's physical defunct and the reason he completely vanished from the eyes of the world was due to the assassination attempt by Skull Face - who made parasites that slowly eats away the poor geezer's brain. In the later years of the MGS universe, the world was led more by the AI than anything else and if anything, TPP has shown that Zero did not have any form of serious contempt towards Big Boss and sees him as an old friend - loyal to him in his own way and believing that Big Boss was needed to create the world he interpreted from The Boss' will. 8) "Volgin" was in a vegetative state from the events of Snake Eater but Psycho Mantis detected his deep sense of anger and contempt. Psycho Mantis was effectively a being with no will of his own and like a parasite, he feeds off the strong negative emotions of others and in turn acts accordingly to their will. However, Mantis seems to be more of his "own person" by MGS (Explained by his symbiotic relationship with Liquid's will as compared to his previous "hosts" like Skull Face and Volgin) but has retained his ability to recognise the brainwaves and thus, thoughts and emotions of others. 9) In the later years, Big Boss' Phantom retains the role of "Big Boss" and was assigned to governing the Outer Heaven that was established by Big Boss behind the scenes and the real Big Boss went on ahead and resumed his role as commander to FOXHOUND - possibly controlling and warning his "phantom" of any possible threats via his role as the FOXHOUND commander. (Thus, being in close proximity to any possible information regarding the Patriots' plan for retaliatory strikes against Outer Heaven) The Outer Heaven Uprising occurred as an act to counter the Patriot's grasp over the world and as a retaliation, the Patriots initiated Operation Intrude. Big Boss, being FOXHOUND's commander (and eluded the Patriot's wide info network) - sent the greenhorn that was known as Solid Snake into the mission, expecting him to fail. As Outer Heaven was destroyed along with Venom Snake, Big Boss left FOXHOUND discreetly and started rebuilding his new base of operations in Zanzibar Land but was ultimately "killed" by his genetic clone. His body was then preserved and rebuilt using his dead clones' body parts. 10) Quiet was pretty much covered with parasite after her parasite therapy under the direction of Skull Face who then infected her with the English strain parasites. The parasites on her body makes up for her destroyed internal organs (Such as her stomach and lungs) and allows her to breathe through her skin and photosynthesize like The End - it was also responsible for all of her superhuman abilities. However, since she doesn't actually require her lungs, it's unknown how the English strain parasites would affect her and it's obvious that all traces of the parasite bio-weapons were destroyed for good by the time Solid's time kicked in. 11) When Big Boss refers to the phantom as his "friend" and that he was confident of his abilities - he was clearly referring to the player and it's pretty much another fourth wall breaking moment by Trolljima. There are many similarities between Raiden and Venom Snake as both were simulated to be "copies" of another person. 12) Ocelot was pretty much mentioned to have experience in hypnotizing himself and this pretty much just reinforces the whole retcon regarding "Liquid wasn't living through his arm" 13) Miller continued working for Venom Snake and aiding Solid Snake as a mentor - all to exact his hatred towards Big Boss' schemes and the betrayal he received from the man himself. Miller was absent in the first Metal Gear but true to his word, he helped Snake in Metal Gear 2 in an effort to throw Big Boss to "hell" after the destruction of Venom Snake. 14) This game also features how tragic of a life Otacon had led. His father was a dick and he probably can't really remember his mom. His mother in turn treated Hal like a child that she had with The Boss and probably didn't really love Huey - at the very least, most of her heart was given to The Boss but also her son. It more or less bridges Big Boss' saga to Solid's own timeline seamlessly - save for a few missing elements such as - Big Boss' own side of the story and Gray Fox / Sniper Wolf were very likely on the real Big Boss' side of the story. Not to mention the infamous amount of content that was cut from the game - probably owing to the deteriorating relationship between Kojima and Konami.
Man this, this is exactly what so many people needs to see. It’s so crazy how much people misunderstand about this game all because they lack details in the story. This game may not be perfect and Kojima wasn’t able to fulfill his full vision, but man this game is such a flawed masterpiece in gameplay and storytelling. While I have a love hate relationship with this game I’ll always cherish it as this game and the Metal Gear saga has soooo much depth with its world and characters. Kojima and his team that created the metal gear saga are honestly artistic geniuses despite their flaws. We really are Big Boss and even years later the memes and messages and the legend of these games still lives on. I absolutely love the fact that both MGS 4 and 5 end where the story all began, what a way to end a series.
People don´t get the twist. The Medic is not important!: - We choose his face - We type in our birthday and name - he lived trough all of Big Boss´s expieriences (like us, in MGS 3 and Peace Walker etc.) - The Medic succeeded in his missions because of our skills that we earned from past games. = We have finally become a Big Boss. "V"is "We". Thank you Mr.Kojima...many People will hate him because they won´t understand the meaning behind the twist. This is "our" very own outer heaven!

Ramiro Duran this is actually completely false. Metal gear solid three is a prime example of advancement. For starters, it advanced the lore of the game to amazing heights, as well as brining a compelling story with amazing mechanics. And with even the phantom pain brought open-world exploration which is a blast!
This ending gives a raw feeling. Quiet leaving, Huey being cast out, Paz "dying," and then we find out we were Big Boss's greatest weapon and best secret; a medic turned doppelganger. I feel the pain now. The pride of Big Boss's trust in my abilities and the pain of his mistrust in me. THAT'S Venom's REAL Phantom Pain. The memories of another. The face, the life. But just as Boss said, he's his own man now. They both hold just as much claim to the title of Big Boss. One for Outer Heaven, one for Zanzibar. Kaz is right to feel betrayed, but the rest of us aren't. He might have been, but we weren't betrayed. We were entrusted with someone else's life. In more ways than one. Say it with me if you agree. Kojima is an absolute genius for this ending. Nobody saw it coming. As a fan who grew up with the series, I was straight up shook the entire ending. Incredible.

Pretty sure he was paid by the syllable which is why he hardly says a word the whole game. Such a shite game when you get down to it really. Unfinished and boring. MGS is at it's best as a more linear experience with a flowing storyline. Not an open world game with copy/paste repeat missions with a disjointed story due to the hours of game time between any story progression.

I think for people who hate the fact we are Medic all time seem forget that this Medic guy isn't just no one, he was mentioned as Big Boss best apprentice and soldier, similiar to Big Boss case when he was The Boss best apprentice, so in this case he was Big Boss best men at that time, and Big Boss inherited his will and his name as well like The Boss gave it to Big Boss, to help build her dream (although *spoiler* they failed) but i think Kojima put it so clever that we can modify and customize how he look so indirectly he told us we are also Big Boss and part of the legacy, for me it's brilliant and it can be better if not because Konami rushing out the production...
So in the first Metal Gear we kill Big Boss' Phantom but in Metal Gear 2 we kill the real Big Boss who then was put in comatose by the Patriots. Oh my God...IT MAKES SENSE!!!
We should've seen it coming too. Kojima gave us so many hints. First is the fact that the real Big Boss in MGS 4 didn't have the shrapnel in his head or the Bionic Arm like the Phantom one does. Second is the hospital opening. The whole opening is in a first person perspective so we never see our face. The doctor says they need to reconstruct your face to hide your real identity, but when you finally see your face, it's Big Boss's. The thing is, we'd never think it since they disguised it as a character customization segment for Metal Gear Online. Lastly, and the biggest one: the name of the game. The Phantom Pain. We were Big Boss's phantom this whole time.
"Thank you, my friend. From here on out..." "You're Big Boss." Even if he was a major antagonist of the series, I couldn't help but smile at this part. Then I cried because Big Boss will never call you his friend in a cassette tape recording you play after realizing your true identity.
I fully understand those who didn't like this ending. But it will always remain among the most meaningful endings ever made in the whole gaming history !
The reason I think most people hate the ending is that they wanted to play as Naked Snake, not some medic that barely had a line in Ground Zeroes. Personally, I think it's awesome that you play as the nobody because you turn him into a somebody, that somebody being Big Boss. Big Boss isn't a person, it's a title, almost an ideology, something to aspire to be. The fact that you were able to put yourself into the game and become one of the world's greatest soldiers and saving the world and having your own army is simply amazing. Think about it, would you rather be a legendary hero yourself? Or pretend to be an already established character that happens to be a legendary hero? If you try looking at it the way I laid out, maybe you won't hate the ending as much, just try having an open mind.
I love this game to death and I think the reason that upset so many people was because of what happened to Kojima and how it cut the game short. It's clear that there was going to be another Metal Gear Game, either a re-imagining of Metal Gear 1 or zanzibarland. But we never got another game, hopefully, the remake changes that.
He's too busy living a normal childhood while the Chad liqued escapes from his rich family and lives in Africa while leading a legion of child soldiers
For people who don't get the ending YOU the player was once part of MSF and was a medic on a mission with Big Boss YOU the player crashed in the helicopter with Big Boss and took shrapnel to the head in Ground Zeroes YOU the player takes the title Big Boss while the real Big Boss takes your title YOU the player create your own Outer Heaven while the other Big Boss creates his own YOU the player a few years later walks up to a mirror while Solid Snake is infiltrating your base Outer Heaven YOU the player find out That you and Big Boss are basically one and the same YOU THE PLAYER start OPERATION INTRUDE N13 which is Metal Gear 1 YOU BIG BOSS goes off to face Solid Snake in a final battle
And since this whole story began with a rookie Solid Snake... It ends with an experienced Big Boss... This makes sense now, you encounter face to face the first character you play as in the whole franchise, your past self
I thought it was pretty obvious that Ishmael was the real Big Boss all along: 1) It's easily missable, but notice at the very beginning that Ishmael's corner of the room is decorated with the same white flowers from the field where he fought The Boss. 2) "Who am I? You're talking to yourself" 3) The fact that he sounds exactly like Kiefer Sutherland. 4) The fact that he can take on several armed mooks kinda tells you that he's no ordinary guy.
I can actually get behind this. No, really. When you think about it, the Big Boss we were playing as was one of MSF's elite. As in the guys in Peace Walker, who you could play as to the same capability as Big Boss. There's honestly nobody else who could become him. As for the double idea, think about it another way: this game is meant to be the bridge. Including the bridge between Big Boss being our antihero and the main antagonist onward for two games. There had to be representation of him both as the player character, and as the one pulling the strings behind the scenes. This does both and explains how in the hell he "survived" the end of Metal Gear: he didn't.
At first it doesn't make sense but then it does. The first Metal Gear has a giant hole: how could Big Boss run Outer Heaven and yet be the leader of Foxhound? It makes perfect sense and still makes sure that Boss did break bad, will be the villain of the first games, and still had his revenge against Zero and Skullface. Even though it's retconning it all makes sense!
Now some people see this as Big Boss sending the torch to the medic/you to carry on his title, and on the surface that's what it is. But I think the real meaning of this scene is to show how Big Boss brainwashes the medic, and by proxy the player, into believing that you are Big Boss and that all his accomplishments are yours too. All the while we forget that he's erasing any sense of self or identity the medic had and scapegoated him for all of Big Boss' crimes, warmongering, and destruction. He's a distraction while the real Big Boss is out there building his real plan for a military nation. A phantom whose accomplishments, triumphs and sacrifices will never be his own because he's acting under the name and face of Big Boss, and his story just like The Boss will never be shown in the pages of history. It's like the reverse of the message in MGS2 where Snake tells Raiden that he needs to forge his own identity and build his own future, and not ride on someone elses legend. That's why in the end he throws the dog tags with the players name on it, he announces his separation from the monikers of "player's avatar" and "Snake's copy" and will now choose his own path.
You guys complaining about this ending are ridiculous, if you were a true fan of the series, and understood the ARC in its entirety, this twist honestly makes perfect sense. Big Boss set Venom Snake in place to continue building the legend that is "Big Boss", he says it himself, he's not big boss anymore, THEY are. While Venom is continuing the legend, the real Big Boss is building Outer Heaven. It also explains how Big Boss was able to be "Killed" by Solid Snake in the MG1 back on the MSX2 and yet Big Boss was the main villian in MG2? That never made sense, but now it does, why? Because Venom Snake was the one posing as Big Boss in MG1. This ending is perfect, and does truly rap the entire series up. The entire arc of Metal Gear is completely fufilled. Maybe not to specifics, but everything is explained, there is no more questions.

New MGS V players be like "OMG, dis game sux, kojima deserfz tht he got fired." While actually they have no idea how much Kojima is mind blowing to the veteran MGS players since they know what's going on there. The Big Boss we were playing was The Medic, guys. It was a decoy The real Big Boss was watching over Venom all those years. Later, Venom gets killed by Solid Snake. And come to think. Solid Snake just ended all this crap which this is why he is my favorite character. Truly a legend. Also, Kojima want to make we, MGS players feel Big Boss's betrayal for us.

He's the guy that, for one reason or another, finally put a stop to all the shit that got started by some old men decades ago. And what did he get to show for it? Accelerated aging, no personal life, and a cursed gene death sentence that he couldn't escape. Still...even after getting fucked over left and right Solid Snake managed to set the world right.
9:40 sounds so horrifying and goes so goddamn hard, the long wait for 3 words 'Big Boss Dies'. The sounds before it hits put Goosebumps on my arms and tingles on my spine, it's done perfectly.
I was really disappointed with the ending at first but now that I've done some research and put all the pieces together I actually think it was a really cool plot twist.
The ending takes a while to get your head around. But it's a masterpiece. We played as the Phantom. And know we must endure the Pain. We are Big Boss. The final dialogue from Kiefer seemed like a goodbye from Kojima too. In any case. Thank you Hideo Kojima!
Am sorry that I can't help anyone here understanding the story as the fan of the game is playing on pc, it will take him a week to beat, once he does then he will come and answer everybody, as for me am not that much of a fan and I dunno what's going on.

Everyone is starting to see Big Boss for what he really is. A lot of people say it's a shame how we don't get to see just exactly how the real Big Boss turns evil but I think this ending did just that.

+Shadow Pain In 1995, Venom Snake received another cassette tape from Big Boss, this time explaining his final mission as part of Operation Intrude N313, much to his chagrin. Venom Snake followed his orders and began an uprising within Outer Heaven to bring chaos to the Patriots, who had been growing without control in spite of their leader Zero falling into a vegetative state. Venom Snake managed to capture the first FOXHOUND operative sent by Big Boss, codenamed Gray Fox. Big Boss then sent his least experienced agent, a rookie codenamed Solid Snake, who happened to be Big Boss's cloned son, with the objective of rescuing Fox and destroying TX-55 Metal Gear. Solid Snake rescued Fox and destroyed the weapon. Afterwards, Venom Snake intervened and revealed himself, identifying himself as Big Boss. The two fought with Solid Snake being the victor, killing Venom Snake. This led to the real Big Boss leaving FOXHOUND and faking his death before going on to establish Zanzibar Land with the remnants of Outer Heaven, which would eventually lead up to the Zanzibar Land Disturbance four years later.

I really wish Big Boss just went straight up bad this time around. He was already getting morally ambiguous in Peace Walker and here we got a pretty justified reason for why he could become a villain. But no, heroes must remain heroes and only villains can ever change their alignment because fantards can't stand to see their favorite become something interesting. It be like if ah, it's not the best comparison but it'll have to do, if Revenge of the Sith wasn't made at all and nothing filled the gap and yet we're supposed to accept that Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. You can still sort of see that after the 2nd movie what with the killing the sand people bit, but it still seems like a bridge too far. As for the rest of your comment, yes. And that's the thing that pisses me off the most. I don't understand why Kojima didn't actually try to play it safe and straight for once and just make Big Boss the villain if not tragic hero. That was what he was meant to be wasn't he, but I don't get that impression whatsoever. I don't see how this character (yet anyway) is the same villain in MG2, and yet the defenders ignore this. You know guys, sometimes simple and sweet does work. Not unnecessarily convoluted plots.
I Loved the ending. It synched all the stories of all metal gears for me into 1 big mind cracking denouement. The fact you're playing a Phantom is part of Big Boss' final plan needed to realise outer heaven. This story and the stories of all metal gears start getting better the more you even think about it!
I like to think that MGSV isn’t canon, but rather another legend of Big Boss passed around. Mgs games have often dealt with reality vs the myth. As if the only way to explain how big boss could have been this influential and wide reaching would be if he had clones or phantoms

So, I'm just as shocked & numbed by this twist ending by any other average fan, but with this series being my favorite game series, I feel compelled to give it a positive light. I'm quite honored to be such a pivotal role in creating the legend that is Big Boss. Sure, using the medic as a body double for Big Boss is quite an excuse plot, but it's not what we're supposed to be focused on. This is a video game after all, and we who are controlling the characters in a video game are responsible for unfolding it's stories and legends. It's not meant to be taken so literally as a novel. Hideo Kojima is subtly telling us, through the voice of Big Boss, the legend he created, that we are responsible for unfolding a huge piece of the legend of Big Boss. The medic is more of a catalyst really. Besides, although it might retcon a few pieces of the story (which we were warned it would. On top of that warning and Kojima's tendency to unveil major plot twists, this ending shouldn't be much a
surprise all things considered), it explains quite nicely how Big Boss could be in control of FOXHOUND while building up Outer Heaven. It also makes more sense as to just how Big Boss "survives" the Outer Heaven Uprising. And remember, Big Boss was always well aware that not everything about legends are ever true. A true soldier to the end, and a master of stealth and deception, he can AND WILL use whatever tools he can to his advantage. And it does make sense in terms of him becoming a demon, betraying the soldiers of Diamond Dogs, including Kaz, all loyal to "the legendary Big Boss" in order to further his own agenda. PS, for anyone who still doesn't agree with this ending, if you haven't listened to the "Truth" tapes, I highly recommend doing so. They contain nice bits of character development that may soften you up, or at least negate your negative feelings towards the "Big Boss phantom" aspect of the story.
This is a Metal Gear Solid, where, I have the BIGGEST love/hate relationship with. The gameplay is amazing. The stealth being improved from 4 and Peace Walker. The emotional parts bring out the feels badly. But....the story, the plot...the VERY weak point, along with the rehashed missions. I knew from the beginning it felt weird, and then have it all unfold did blow my mind a bit. It does make more sense I suppose, this isn't 5 per se, even though it is the 5th main game in the series, but no, this is Metal Gear Solid V ( Venom ) Telling a story of our own, filling in the missing gaps of the lore, becoming the man we've longed for to know his past, and taking his life into ours. Becoming a name, a legend. Being his Phantom, his shadow. We always thought Big Boss turned into this monster, this mad man with a fucking pure thirst for blood, war....but....in fact...it was Venom...it was us, we made Big Boss seem that way, and it was all put back on our Big Boss, our Venom, our character that we made, we've been there as his top-ranking troop, and he respected us to be him, as his shadow in the mirror, and becoming the demon to fault it all. The original ending is better, but I can't help but love this one the most. I should be pissed off, but there's something about this that makes me feel satisfied. I don't know, I must be insane.
JourneyML1 Late reply: Yeah, but i don't blame him really. He was being rushed to finish the game in time for a release date, and he wanted more time to polish the rest of it as much as he could. But nope, Konami had it though. It was confirmed that Kojima was going over-budget, and requested more funds, but Konami denied it and started the argument that would get Kojima fired. Glad they did, now we have Death Stranding and other projects to look forward to with Sony backing him and his team 100%.

I like this ending, but what I do not understand is why Miller didn't suspect that the guy who saved him in Afghanistan is not the real BigBoss? Because as you can see from the scene where the doctors in Colombia hospital are saving BigBoss, Miller asks about the condition of the medic: "What about him?" and doctor says: "He took some shrapnel... to the head." Miller must heard that and when "BigBoss" finally rescues him in Afghanistan 9 years later he has shrapnel in the head. Isn't that strange?

David Hayter should have been the real Big Boss at the end! Fan fare service and helps tie the connections with the twist better. Also would eliminate the fact that both the medic and Big Boss share the same Keifer voice..
I just noticed that the motorcycle Big boss uses is the same one that Eva uses in mgs4 we can see that in the license plates and the motorcycle model,they do geniually love eachother

All the new MGS "fans" say this game sucks because Kojima pulled off the GREATEST plot twist in MGS history. They don't realize how awesome this revelation was to the REAL and HARDCORE fans. Only veteran fans would understand why this ending made so much sense. I'm glad Kojima explained it all in this game. He explained why Kaz departed from Big Boss, why Ocelot chose to side with Liquid in MGS1 and why Miller chose to train Solid Snake,the fact that the "Phantom" of Big Boss died in MG1 and the REAL Big Boss returned in MG2, making it seem like he survived when in reality, there is no way anyone could survive an explosion like that. Everything has been explained and everything has been tied together. No more "loose ends". Kojima has told his story and I am proud to say that I was a Metal Gear fan to the end. Thank You Kojima.

kakamana1000 this is explained in MGS4 - they don't want an army of normal human big bosses, as that could get out of hand in terms of reproductions and genetics - however, the terrible sons all were neutered and had a short life expectancy, which is why solid is so old in MGS4 when hes in actual reality just 42 - they were made to be weapons and had expiration dates - hypnopherapy on humans wouldnt have suited zero's plans

Just a quick suggestion for anyone who likes the concept of this ending (which resonates with a lot of stuff from Sons of Liberty) go watch episode 7 of Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It's a stand-alone episode, and it deals with basically the same themes as this ending, minus the gigantic 4th wall break.

Well if this is the case then I totally understand now why solid had to use the aresol can and lighter to defeat venom snake, the bionic hand was a challenge in the fight and solid had to use a last resort plan. Also explains why I never saw the bionic hand on bb in mgs4. The guy wouldn't in his right mind give that up. But that aside, this ending wasn't the worst thing I have seen. My mind was blown and everything began to make sense after that. He ending made some sense and hopefully there might be a remake of mgs1. If that happens, venom and solid are gonna have one good fight. I only say that because I really want all the attachments to be a thing in the cqc lol
I have a question, Iv'e never really played the games but why was Venom Snake and Big Boss and all that considered villains, wasn't it The Patriots who were the bad guys? I did however notice the change between Diamond Dogs and Outer Heaven, me think the scene just before he punches the mirror is just before he fight Solid Snake.
I wouldn't say he's a villain either, his goal in creating outer heaven is to make a place where soldiers are no longer the puppets of powerful elites. The acquisition of nuclear weapons was to be a deterant to the influence of other nations and the philosphers. He is seen as a villain because he challenged the traditional power structure. Solid is a tool of that power structure (unknowingly ) and serves the Patriots.
+edward18517 i know what this ending means and signifies. It's not simply saying "You play as the medic" because that's a shallow way to look at it. At the beginning, we create our perfect avatar, a representation of ourself, we even put our own name and DOB in it. WE, the players, are the medic - WE are venom snake. Now, what is big boss? It isnt a person - it's a title. A legacy. Ok, so we don't play as Jack, the original big boss - but we DO play as big boss - Jack hands us the PLAYER that title - this is Kojima's final MGS game, and, as a farewell present, he is giving US the title of Big Boss. That's why Jack says thank you. It's subtle, but it's from Kojima. Jack says that the medic was his his most trusted lieutenant - why was he? What's so special about him? It's because we've known Jack since his very first mission. That's why Venom Snake has Jacks memories - it's because we were there WITH Jack. It's not a fuck you to fans - it's a thank you. It also fits with the canon too - it explains how Big Boss survived MG1s Outer Heaven ending - he didn't. Solid Snake killed Big Bosses phantom - he killed Venom. Don't be shallow. Sadly, this will be lost on most fans.
Yeah, I get that he's just some guy, and I appreciate that it's JUST SOME GUY that is able to do all this shit instead of just a Snake, but my issue is that is ALL that it leads up to. It doesn't really lead into any of the original stuff other than explaining how Big Boss survives 1. All it does is just cram more unnecessary high-tech-mech, Otacon's dad, and shit that just doesn't belong in the prequels when it's supposed to be building up to the TX-55 and stuff. My problem was that THIS was all that 5 really led up to. Just some explanation as to how Big Boss survived 1 instead of doing a proper transition into Metal Gear 1.
I don't understand why people flipped shit about this ending, it's hype as fuck and the twist is great. It retcons MG1 but those games are old and needed to be updated, now everything fits much better. Every single MGS game pounds it into your head that the legend surrounding people is much more impressive than the person. So no we're not actually Big Boss proper but we actually are, because Big Boss is more than just one person. Venom is badass and earned his snakes stripes anyway. The only thing I really wish we could have seen was a small scene of Solid fighting Venom but the game implies later on he's going to fight him and some times that's better than seeing it because we already know what happens.
The Big Boss Snake kills is not the real one, it's Venom. Then in MG2 when Snake sees him again he doesn't understand how he apparently survived, which we know that one was the real Boss and that's how he shows up in MGS4. It retcons both of those and honestly it needed to happen. Only hardcore fans ever played them and now it makes sense in a MGS way lol

MGS3: Naked Snake killed The Boss, thus transforming himself into Big Boss, her equal.
MGS4: Solidus' body was mistaken for Big Boss's body allowing Big Boss to cheat death. Solid Snake and Big Boss reunite and Big Boss warns Snake not to end up like him, to live his life while he still has it.
MGSV: The medic was MSF's best soldier. But to allow Big Boss to escape the hospital alive, they needed a decoy, so to speak. Then came the idea to create a phantom for Big Boss, equal to him by meme, not gene, and have him spread the legend of Big Boss until Zanzibar Land is built. Little did they know, Punished "Venom" Snake would form a legend of his own...

When Ocelot says "Don't worry he can handle it." because (in a slight 4th wall break) he knows YOU the player can handle it. The whole point of Venom was that, (assuming you created yourself with the character creator) YOU are Venom, and YOU are Big Boss's best man because YOU have been there with him his entire life because YOU played all the games. Before MGSV, you were by all accounts, ACTUALLY Big Boss because you played his life. The speech from Big Boss over from the cassette more than just wrapping up the plot points it is Hideo Kojima telling the fans of the series "I'm Big Boss and you are too, he's the two of us together. Where we are today we built it" and "Thank you my friend" for sticking with his series for this long, knowing he was on his way out of Konami. Kojima is telling the fans we are all as cool, idealistic and badass as Big Boss because we are his Phantom. Such a great twist

This ending can almost be interpreted as the fans being divided as Venom and Kaz.
You can either say "Fuck you Kojima, why aren't we playing as Big Boss?" - similar to Miller's reaction to Big Boss abandoning him.
Or you can say "I'll accept this. I'm Big Boss." - similar to Venom Snake getting that cassette tape.

there's always multiple interpretations but to me this was just a lazy way to add a twist on things for making a some what uninteresting story but that may be due to konami since he was in bad terms with them. I'm sure if he had more time he would make a much more compelling story with events that really fit and mattered more and use the actual big boss. I was hoping to see him slowly break and go some what evilness even if that definition is some what blurred in our own concept of there being no good or evil but besides that i know kojima wanted to remake mgs and change the adaption of it's story so big boss in MG2 would be completely different.
Fatal Existence I think he planned this from the beginning. The "what about him" is in the trailer as far back as 2013. Of course, we would have had a more satisfying ending, maybe this twist would have its presence explained, but alas.
For the confused lots out there regarding the whole plot of the game...
1) "Venom Snake" was a product of a plan between the Patriots that went their separate ways (Big Boss brought Ocelot and EVA with him while Zero withdrew into seclusion with Sigint and Paramedic handling stuff like the AI and genetic engineering for him) - all of them putting aside their differences and conflicts so they could protect the real Big Boss from the eyes of the world when he awakens from his coma.
2) Venom Snake served both as a "shield" for the real Big Boss (Protecting him from the eyes of the world as he builds Outer Heaven and until he is ready to reemerge into the world as Big Boss) and as a means to rebuild his "legend" as Big Boss himself discretely built the military nation of Outer Heaven.
This would effectively sustain Big Boss' influence over the military world while Big Boss could secretly build his ideal "nation" of Outer Heaven.
3) "Venom Snake" was given hypnotherapy and strong verbal suggestions to convince him that he was Big Boss.
His combat abilities were primarily explained by the fact that he was one of MSF's best soldiers.
4) "Venom Snake" becoming "Big Boss" is reminiscent of the events of MGS2 where the entire events of the Big Shell Incident was forged and orchestrated by the Patriots to duplicate the events of Shadow Moses in an attempt to test out the possibilities of creating a soldier like Solid Snake - essentially, the Patriots tried to turn Raiden into a "Snake".
Unlike Raiden, however, Venom Snake was completely molded into "Big Boss" while Raiden broke free from being "controlled and manipulated" and both characters were essentially "avatars" of the player.
5) The origins of the Patriots AI were explained in the game.
Essentially, they were distorted forms of The Boss' will - in the form of the AI Pod that sunk in Peace Walker.
The AI Pod in question was retrieved and Strangelove in turn was pretty much the person that had created the various AIs governing the world with The Boss' "will" serving as the template.
6) Zero foreshadowed the creation of FOXDIE in his conversation with Skull Face as the former rejected the continued use of the vocal cord parasites as he claimed that genetic research has come to the stage of which he could target specific individuals and he has no interest whatsoever in using the parasites - as well as wanting to blur the borders between countries by uniting them under the same frame of thinking.
All of this is reflected in Solid Snake's time as information control became a dominant theme in MGS2 and 4.
7) Zero's physical defunct and the reason he completely vanished from the eyes of the world was due to the assassination attempt by Skull Face - who made parasites that slowly eats away the poor geezer's brain.
In the later years of the MGS universe, the world was led more by the AI than anything else and if anything, TPP has shown that Zero did not have any form of serious contempt towards Big Boss and sees him as an old friend - loyal to him in his own way and believing that Big Boss was needed to create the world he interpreted from The Boss' will.
8) "Volgin" was in a vegetative state from the events of Snake Eater but Psycho Mantis detected his deep sense of anger and contempt.
Psycho Mantis was effectively a being with no will of his own and like a parasite, he feeds off the strong negative emotions of others and in turn acts accordingly to their will.
However, Mantis seems to be more of his "own person" by MGS (Explained by his symbiotic relationship with Liquid's will as compared to his previous "hosts" like Skull Face and Volgin) but has retained his ability to recognise the brainwaves and thus, thoughts and emotions of others.
9) In the later years, Big Boss' Phantom retains the role of "Big Boss" and was assigned to governing the Outer Heaven that was established by Big Boss behind the scenes and the real Big Boss went on ahead and resumed his role as commander to FOXHOUND - possibly controlling and warning his "phantom" of any possible threats via his role as the FOXHOUND commander. (Thus, being in close proximity to any possible information regarding the Patriots' plan for retaliatory strikes against Outer Heaven)
The Outer Heaven Uprising occurred as an act to counter the Patriot's grasp over the world and as a retaliation, the Patriots initiated Operation Intrude.
Big Boss, being FOXHOUND's commander (and eluded the Patriot's wide info network) - sent the greenhorn that was known as Solid Snake into the mission, expecting him to fail.
As Outer Heaven was destroyed along with Venom Snake, Big Boss left FOXHOUND discreetly and started rebuilding his new base of operations in Zanzibar Land but was ultimately "killed" by his genetic clone.
His body was then preserved and rebuilt using his dead clones' body parts.
10) Quiet was pretty much covered with parasite after her parasite therapy under the direction of Skull Face who then infected her with the English strain parasites.
The parasites on her body makes up for her destroyed internal organs (Such as her stomach and lungs) and allows her to breathe through her skin and photosynthesize like The End - it was also responsible for all of her superhuman abilities.
However, since she doesn't actually require her lungs, it's unknown how the English strain parasites would affect her and it's obvious that all traces of the parasite bio-weapons were destroyed for good by the time Solid's time kicked in.
11) When Big Boss refers to the phantom as his "friend" and that he was confident of his abilities - he was clearly referring to the player and it's pretty much another fourth wall breaking moment by Trolljima.
There are many similarities between Raiden and Venom Snake as both were simulated to be "copies" of another person.
12) Ocelot was pretty much mentioned to have experience in hypnotizing himself and this pretty much just reinforces the whole retcon regarding "Liquid wasn't living through his arm"
13) Miller continued working for Venom Snake and aiding Solid Snake as a mentor - all to exact his hatred towards Big Boss' schemes and the betrayal he received from the man himself.
Miller was absent in the first Metal Gear but true to his word, he helped Snake in Metal Gear 2 in an effort to throw Big Boss to "hell" after the destruction of Venom Snake.
14) This game also features how tragic of a life Otacon had led.
His father was a dick and he probably can't really remember his mom.
His mother in turn treated Hal like a child that she had with The Boss and probably didn't really love Huey - at the very least, most of her heart was given to The Boss but also her son.
It more or less bridges Big Boss' saga to Solid's own timeline seamlessly - save for a few missing elements such as - Big Boss' own side of the story and Gray Fox / Sniper Wolf were very likely on the real Big Boss' side of the story.
Not to mention the infamous amount of content that was cut from the game - probably owing to the deteriorating relationship between Kojima and Konami.

Man this, this is exactly what so many people needs to see. It’s so crazy how much people misunderstand about this game all because they lack details in the story. This game may not be perfect and Kojima wasn’t able to fulfill his full vision, but man this game is such a flawed masterpiece in gameplay and storytelling. While I have a love hate relationship with this game I’ll always cherish it as this game and the Metal Gear saga has soooo much depth with its world and characters. Kojima and his team that created the metal gear saga are honestly artistic geniuses despite their flaws. We really are Big Boss and even years later the memes and messages and the legend of these games still lives on. I absolutely love the fact that both MGS 4 and 5 end where the story all began, what a way to end a series.

Ramiro Duran this is actually completely false. Metal gear solid three is a prime example of advancement. For starters, it advanced the lore of the game to amazing heights, as well as brining a compelling story with amazing mechanics. And with even the phantom pain brought open-world exploration which is a blast!
This ending gives a raw feeling. Quiet leaving, Huey being cast out, Paz "dying," and then we find out we were Big Boss's greatest weapon and best secret; a medic turned doppelganger. I feel the pain now. The pride of Big Boss's trust in my abilities and the pain of his mistrust in me.
THAT'S Venom's REAL Phantom Pain. The memories of another. The face, the life. But just as Boss said, he's his own man now. They both hold just as much claim to the title of Big Boss. One for Outer Heaven, one for Zanzibar. Kaz is right to feel betrayed, but the rest of us aren't. He might have been, but we weren't betrayed. We were entrusted with someone else's life. MGS is at it's best as a more linear experience with a flowing storyline. Not an open world game with copy/paste repeat missions with a disjointed story due to the hours of game time between any story progression.

When Big Boss was smoking that cigar and said "Guess I'm really the man who sold the world" I cried
I think for people who hate the fact we are Medic all time seem forget that this Medic guy isn't just no one, he was mentioned as Big Boss best apprentice and soldier, similiar to Big Boss case when he was The Boss best apprentice, so in this case he was Big Boss best men at that time, and Big Boss inherited his will and his name as well like The Boss gave it to Big Boss, to help build her dream (although *spoiler* they failed) but i think Kojima put it so clever that we can modify and customize how he look so indirectly he told us we are also Big Boss and part of the legacy, for me it's brilliant and it can be better if not because Konami rushing out the production...

So in the first Metal Gear we kill Big Boss' Phantom but in Metal Gear 2 we kill the real Big Boss who then was put in comatose by the Patriots. Oh my God...IT MAKES SENSE!!!
We should've seen it coming too. Kojima gave us so many hints.
First is the fact that the real Big Boss in MGS 4 didn't have the shrapnel in his head or the Bionic Arm like the Phantom one does.
Second is the hospital opening. The whole opening is in a first person perspective so we never see our face. The doctor says they need to reconstruct your face to hide your real identity, but when you finally see your face, it's Big Boss's. The thing is, we'd never think it since they disguised it as a character customization segment for Metal Gear Online.
Lastly, and the biggest one: the name of the game. The Phantom Pain. We were Big Boss's phantom this whole time.

The reason I think most people hate the ending is that they wanted to play as Naked Snake, not some medic that barely had a line in Ground Zeroes. Personally, I think it's awesome that you play as the nobody because you turn him into a somebody, that somebody being Big Boss. Big Boss isn't a person, it's a title, almost an ideology, something to aspire to be. The fact that you were able to put yourself into the game and become one of the world's greatest soldiers and saving the world and having your own army is simply amazing. Think about it, would you rather be a legendary hero yourself? Or pretend to be an already established character that happens to be a legendary hero? If you try looking at it the way I laid out, maybe you won't hate the ending as much, just try having an open mind.
I love this game to death and I think the reason that upset so many people was because of what happened to Kojima and how it cut the game short. It's clear that there was going to be another Metal Gear Game, either a re-imagining of Metal Gear 1 or zanzibarland. But we never got another game, hopefully, the remake changes that.

And since this whole story began with a rookie Solid Snake... It ends with an experienced Big Boss... This makes sense now, you encounter face to face the first character you play as in the whole franchise, your past self

I thought it was pretty obvious that Ishmael was the real Big Boss all along:
1) It's easily missable, but notice at the very beginning that Ishmael's corner of the room is decorated with the same white flowers from the field where he fought The Boss.

3) The fact that he sounds exactly like Kiefer Sutherland.
4) The fact that he can take on several armed mooks kinda tells you that he's no ordinary guy.

I can actually get behind this. No, really.
When you think about it, the Big Boss we were playing as was one of MSF's elite. As in the guys in Peace Walker, who you could play as to the same capability as Big Boss. There's honestly nobody else who could become him.
As for the double idea, think about it another way: this game is meant to be the bridge. Including the bridge between Big Boss being our antihero and the main antagonist onward for two games. There had to be representation of him both as the player character, and as the one pulling the strings behind the scenes. This does both and explains how in the hell he "survived" the end of Metal Gear: he didn't.
At first it doesn't make sense but then it does. The first Metal Gear has a giant hole: how could Big Boss run Outer Heaven and yet be the leader of Foxhound? It makes perfect sense and still makes sure that Boss did break bad, will be the villain of the first games, and still had his revenge against Zero and Skullface. Even though it's retconning it all makes sense!
Now some people see this as Big Boss sending the torch to the medic/you to carry on his title, and on the surface that's what it is. But I think the real meaning of this scene is to show how Big Boss brainwashes the medic, and by proxy the player, into believing that you are Big Boss and that all his accomplishments are yours too. All the while we forget that he's erasing any sense of self or identity the medic had and scapegoated him for all of Big Boss' crimes, warmongering, and destruction. He's a distraction while the real Big Boss is out there building his real plan for a military nation. A phantom whose accomplishments, triumphs and sacrifices will never be his own because he's acting under the name and face of Big Boss, and his story just like The Boss will never be shown in the pages of history. It's like the reverse of the message in MGS2 where Snake tells Raiden that he needs to forge his own identity and build his own future, and not ride on someone elses legend. That's why in the end he throws the dog tags with the players name on it, he announces his separation from the monikers of "player's avatar" and "Snake's copy" and will now choose his own path.
You guys complaining about this ending are ridiculous, if you were a true fan of the series, and understood the ARC in its entirety, this twist honestly makes perfect sense. Big Boss set Venom Snake in place to continue building the legend that is "Big Boss", he says it himself, he's not big boss anymore, THEY are. While Venom is continuing the legend, the real Big Boss is building Outer Heaven. It also explains how Big Boss was able to be "Killed" by Solid Snake in the MG1 back on the MSX2 and yet Big Boss was the main villian in MG2? That never made sense, but now it does, why? Because Venom Snake was the one posing as Big Boss in MG1. This ending is perfect, and does truly rap the entire series up. The entire arc of Metal Gear is completely fufilled. Maybe not to specifics, but everything is explained, there is no more questions.

9:40 sounds so horrifying and goes so goddamn hard, the long wait for 3 words 'Big Boss Dies'. The sounds before it hits put Goosebumps on my arms and tingles on my spine, it's done perfectly.
I was really disappointed with the ending at first but now that I've done some research and put all the pieces together I actually think it was a really cool plot twist.
The ending takes a while to get your head around. But it's a masterpiece. We played as the Phantom. And know we must endure the Pain. We are Big Boss. The final dialogue from Kiefer seemed like a goodbye from Kojima too. In any case. Thank you Hideo Kojima!

+Shadow Pain In 1995, Venom Snake received another cassette tape from Big Boss, this time explaining his final mission as part of Operation Intrude N313, much to his chagrin. Venom Snake followed his orders and began an uprising within Outer Heaven to bring chaos to the Patriots, who had been growing without control in spite of their leader Zero falling into a vegetative state. Venom Snake managed to capture the first FOXHOUND operative sent by Big Boss, codenamed Gray Fox.
Big Boss then sent his least experienced agent, a rookie codenamed Solid Snake, who happened to be Big Boss's cloned son, with the objective of rescuing Fox and destroying TX-55 Metal Gear. Solid Snake rescued Fox and destroyed the weapon. Afterwards, Venom Snake intervened and revealed himself, identifying himself as Big Boss. I wish Big Boss was voiced by David Hayter or Richard Doyle in the ending when he has a dialogue with Ocelot before he gets on his bike.

MGS5 was a great game but to find out that we were not Big Boss but a doppelganger felt like a kick in the nutts

I really wish Big Boss just went straight up bad this time around. He was already getting morally ambiguous in Peace Walker and here we got a pretty justified reason for why he could become a villain. It be like if ah, it's not the best comparison but it'll have to do, if Revenge of the Sith wasn't made at all and nothing filled the gap and yet we're supposed to accept that Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. You can still sort of see that after the 2nd movie what with the killing the sand people bit, but it still seems like a bridge too far. As for the rest of your comment, yes. And that's the thing that pisses me off the most. I don't understand why Kojima didn't actually try to play it safe and straight for once and just make Big Boss the villain if not tragic hero. I Loved the ending. It synched all the stories of all metal gears for me into 1 big mind cracking denouement. The fact you're playing a Phantom is part of Big Boss' final plan needed to realise outer heaven. This story and the stories of all metal gears start getting better the more you even think about it!

So, I'm just as shocked & numbed by this twist ending by any other average fan, but with this series being my favorite game series, I feel compelled to give it a positive light.
I'm quite honored to be such a pivotal role in creating the legend that is Big Boss. Sure, using the medic as a body double for Big Boss is quite an excuse plot, but it's not what we're supposed to be focused on. This is a video game after all, and we who are controlling the characters in a video game are responsible for unfolding it's stories and legends. It's not meant to be taken so literally as a novel. Hideo Kojima is subtly telling us, through the voice of Big Boss, the legend he created, that we are responsible for unfolding a huge piece of the legend of Big Boss. The medic is more of a catalyst really. Besides, although it might retcon a few pieces of the story (which we were warned it would. On top of that warning and Kojima's tendency to unveil major plot twists, this ending shouldn't be much a
surprise all things considered), it explains quite nicely how Big Boss could be in control of FOXHOUND while building up Outer Heaven. It also makes more sense as to just how Big Boss "survives" the Outer Heaven Uprising. And remember, Big Boss was always well aware that not everything about legends are ever true. A true soldier to the end, and a master of stealth and deception, he can AND WILL use whatever tools he can to his advantage. And it does make sense in terms of him becoming a demon, betraying the soldiers of Diamond Dogs, including Kaz, all loyal to "the legendary Big Boss" in order to further his own agenda.
PS, for anyone who still doesn't agree with this ending, if you haven't listened to the "Truth" tapes, I highly recommend doing so. They contain nice bits of character development that may soften you up, or at least negate your negative feelings towards the "Big Boss phantom" aspect of the story.
This is a Metal Gear Solid, where, I have the BIGGEST love/hate relationship with. The gameplay is amazing. The stealth being improved from 4 and Peace Walker. The emotional parts bring out the feels badly. But....the story, the plot...the VERY weak point, along with the rehashed missions. I knew from the beginning it felt weird, and then have it all unfold did blow my mind a bit. It does make more sense I suppose, this isn't 5 per se, even though it is the 5th main game in the series, but no, this is Metal Gear Solid V ( Venom ) Telling a story of our own, filling in the missing gaps of the lore, becoming the man we've longed for to know his past, and taking his life into ours. Becoming a name, a legend. Being his Phantom, his shadow. We always thought Big Boss turned into this monster, this mad man with a fucking pure thirst for blood, war....but....in fact...it was Venom...it was us, we made Big Boss seem that way, and it was all put back on our Big Boss, our Venom, our character that we made, we've been there as his top-ranking troop, and he respected us to be him, as his shadow in the mirror, and becoming the demon to fault it all. The original ending is better, but I can't help but love this one the most. I should be pissed off, but there's something about this that makes me feel satisfied. I don't know, I must be insane.

He was being rushed to finish the game in time for a release date, and he wanted more time to polish the rest of it as much as he could.
But nope, Konami had it though. It was confirmed that Kojima was going over-budget, and requested more funds, but Konami denied it and started the argument that would get Kojima fired.
Glad they did, now we have Death Stranding and other projects to look forward to with Sony backing him and his team 100%.

I like this ending, but what I do not understand is why Miller didn't suspect that the guy who saved him in Afghanistan is not the real BigBoss? Because as you can see from the scene where the doctors in Colombia hospital are saving BigBoss, Miller asks about the condition of the medic: "What about him?" and doctor says: "He took some shrapnel... to the head." Miller must heard that and when "BigBoss" finally rescues him in Afghanistan 9 years later he has shrapnel in the head. Isn't that strange?

I just noticed that the motorcycle Big boss uses is the same one that Eva uses in mgs4 we can see that in the license plates and the motorcycle model,they do geniually love eachother

All the new MGS "fans" say this game sucks because Kojima pulled off the GREATEST plot twist in MGS history. They don't realize how awesome this revelation was to the REAL and HARDCORE fans. Only veteran fans would understand why this ending made so much sense. I'm glad Kojima explained it all in this game. He explained why Kaz departed from Big Boss, why Ocelot chose to side with Liquid in MGS1 and why Miller chose to train Solid Snake,the fact that the "Phantom" of Big Boss died in MG1 and the REAL Big Boss returned in MG2, making it seem like he survived when in reality, there is no way anyone could survive an explosion like that. Everything has been explained and everything has been tied together. No more "loose ends". Kojima has told his story and I am proud to say that I was a Metal Gear fan to the end. Thank You Kojima.

kakamana1000 this is explained in MGS4 - they don't want an army of normal human big bosses, as that could get out of hand in terms of reproductions and genetics - however, the terrible sons all were neutered and had a short life expectancy, which is why solid is so old in MGS4 when hes in actual reality just 42 - they were made to be weapons and had expiration dates - hypnopherapy on humans wouldnt have suited zero's plans

Just a quick suggestion for anyone who likes the concept of this ending (which resonates with a lot of stuff from Sons of Liberty) go watch episode 7 of Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. It's a stand-alone episode, and it deals with basically the same themes as this ending, minus the gigantic 4th wall break.

Well if this is the case then I totally understand now why solid had to use the aresol can and lighter to defeat venom snake, the bionic hand was a challenge in the fight and solid had to use a last resort plan. Also explains why I never saw the bionic hand on bb in mgs4. The guy wouldn't in his right mind give that up. But that aside, this ending wasn't the worst thing I have seen. My mind was blown and everything began to make sense after that. He ending made some sense and hopefully there might be a remake of mgs1. If that happens, venom and solid are gonna have one good fight. I only say that because I really want all the attachments to be a thing in the cqc lol

I did however notice the change between Diamond Dogs and Outer Heaven, me think the scene just before he punches the mirror is just before he fight Solid Snake.
I wouldn't say he's a villain either, his goal in creating outer heaven is to make a place where soldiers are no longer the puppets of powerful elites.
The acquisition of nuclear weapons was to be a deterant to the influence of other nations and the philosphers.
He is seen as a villain because he challenged the traditional power structure.
Solid is a tool of that power structure (unknowingly ) and serves the Patriots.

At the beginning, we create our perfect avatar, a representation of ourself, we even put our own name and DOB in it. WE, the players, are the medic - WE are venom snake. Now, what is big boss? It isnt a person - it's a title. A legacy. Ok, so we don't play as Jack, the original big boss - but we DO play as big boss - Jack hands us the PLAYER that title - this is Kojima's final MGS game, and, as a farewell present, he is giving US the title of Big Boss. That's why Jack says thank you. It's subtle, but it's from Kojima. Jack says that the medic was his his most trusted lieutenant - why was he? What's so special about him? It's because we've known Jack since his very first mission. That's why Venom Snake has Jacks memories - it's because we were there WITH Jack. It's not a fuck you to fans - it's a thank you. It also fits with the canon too - it explains how Big Boss survived MG1s Outer Heaven ending - he didn't. Solid Snake killed Big Bosses phantom - he killed Venom. Don't be shallow. Sadly, this will be lost on most fans.
Yeah, I get that he's just some guy, and I appreciate that it's JUST SOME GUY that is able to do all this shit instead of just a Snake, but my issue is that is ALL that it leads up to. It doesn't really lead into any of the original stuff other than explaining how Big Boss survives 1. I don't understand why people flipped shit about this ending, it's hype as fuck and the twist is great. It retcons MG1 but those games are old and needed to be updated, now everything fits much better. Every single MGS game pounds it into your head that the legend surrounding people is much more impressive than the person. So no we're not actually Big Boss proper but we actually are, because Big Boss is more than just one person. Venom is badass and earned his snakes stripes anyway. The only thing I really wish we could have seen was a small scene of Solid fighting Venom but the game implies later on he's going to fight him and some times that's better than seeing it because we already know what happens.

The Big Boss Snake kills is not the real one, it's Venom. Then in MG2 when Snake sees him again he doesn't understand how he apparently survived, which we know that one was the real Boss and that's how he shows up in MGS4.
It retcons both of those and honestly it needed to happen. Only hardcore fans ever played them and now it makes sense in a MGS way lol
