you probably dont care but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all of the latest movies on instaflixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend during the lockdown :)
Coming to think of it a lot of this stuff is instinctual and this happens in seconds it all comes from playing matches watching football and working hard
@Yvan Sainathan I actually kind of disagree. When you're facing people who are really good, there's a point in which you have to realize that stopping them is going to take more than normal solid play. In other word's cheating to stop passes in and forcing harder balls over the top to create a foot race, or if they get the ball constantly shuffling my feet, because even though it's tiring it stops them from being able to get you fully turned around. Neither of these things are natural or instinctual, but are just adaptions you need to think about when playing someone more skillful than you.
I was thinking about doing that on my channel here. For me I can relate to you a lot with this, I sometimes struggle with confidence but here is what I find really helpful. First before a game think about all the hard work you have put in during the week to become successful for the next 90 minutes. Confidence is connected to how well you feel you are ready to handle the task at hand and if you're putting in work remind yourself of that. Second start with the small things look to connect small passes then grow from there. Everyone goes through times where they feel less confident but its how you respond to them that matters! Let me know if you think this is something I should talk about in my next video. Hope this helps mate.
From my experience you get confidence in games from practicing on your own because If you practice long passing for a week then when you get the ball and you are about to play a long ball you will have confidence because you know you have been working on it for a week and in a week it may not be perfect you will be okay with messing up on it because you know you have been working on it
Great insight Matt! I deffo think this is not spoken about enough in coaching and training. I like analyse strikers in the pro game, they are always anticipating keepers dropping the ball, when centre backs may do a weak back pass and where the ball might land in the box. Keep up these kind of topics 👏🏾
I anticipate the play, but the annoying part is when you just miss the ball by inches even when you know where the ball is going. That is soo irritating makes me feel so not fit 😅
Either your timing your runs badly or more likely the players around you are hitting the ball too hard, if they don't posses a good weighted pass ability it's hard to put a ball on a moving player
@@anupj8725 not much you can really do about it, however do not stop going for the balls, always attempt to create the opportunity and focus on your own ability, make sure your able to do what they can't, ie a weighted pass
I remember when I was a young defender, I would always just think of getting to the ball first and not letting the attacker make the first move. But as you get to 15,16,17 years old you start to realise that some of these wingers you come up against are actually getting smarter with their movement and it made me start to realise that you have to use a little bit of your instinct and just anticipate through body shape
Another example is with the 'under the wall' free-kick technique. Ronaldinho, and many others since, anticipated that the players in the wall would jump to anticipate his shot going over them and block it, and decided to shoot under the wall instead. He anticipated the other players' anticipation, and found a solution to score.
PLEASE DO MORE LIKE THESE, these kind of small notations u made about anticipation was huge and brought great awareness of it. More field details pleaseee
Hi Matt, thank you for posting all these beneficial and helpful contents for us, young players. I have been playing left center back since youth and good at defending for my team. However, I always wanted to play as a striker or winger in offense. But struggled to stay calm or know how to position myself for runs or attacking with the teammates in offensive line. Could you please do a video on that Matt? It would be highly appreciated!! Sending support from Minnesota!
I wish youth coaches would explain this to kids. It’s so much of a thinking game. Everyone cares about moves and winning but not about playing intelligently. Thinking ahead is so much a part of the game
Thanks, this will probably help me for my trials with the finest football academy in our country which is on 10th april. I am gk btw and still it is really helpful.
man i love this setup, especially this background. i am glad after knowing that i can anticipate that is going to happen in these two scenarios as mentioned by you
When you always drop a like before even starting the video because you know not only it’s going to be a banger, but there’s also going to be tons of useful and pertinent information shared!! 👍 Great video once again Matt!
with the fullback, so to make it clear, the fullback is stepping towards the winger acting as if he is going to tackle him, he anticipates that the winger is going to go down the line, therefore he is going to take an explosive step and run down the line before the winger sets off. Is this correct?
this is true. There's this 1 time I sort of fell into this habit, by being inspired by messi's hunger to engage and help out in a match, and I was on FIIIRE. You are a real one bro. Like your honesty. You don't act like you know everything, at the same time you try to educate us.
Matt! This is by the far the best video I have learned from you with so much great information and detail. 100% agree the higher level you get the mental side with awareness and anticipate is so key!
Great explanation of a key part of being a pro player! Question for another video: Often I’ll get messages from friends/colleagues in the pro game who complain about their agency not doing enough, the politics of a particular team, or teammates who aren’t welcoming/kind. I’d be really interested in your take on personal responsibility and “extreme ownership” (Jocko Willink book), and how it can help with becoming and staying in the professional game. Thank you brother!
So as amateurs can we start thinking like the more experienced players /the pros, or is it gonna be too fast for our level/competition and get confusing? Incredible Video!
This is a good question, I was gonna do a topic kinda similar to this this question. I think its important to always be thinking like a pro because it will help you stand out in lower levels plus you don't want to degrade your own level. Being able to think quicker then other players is something that coaches will see.
I really think this will help amateur players more than all their usual trainings. Maybe most people think they haven't the physicall level of a pro. But in reality it's mostly the mental ability they lack. The physical and mental aspect are connected. Every physical task starts with the mental order to do it. Being mentally quick is beining quick!
@matt, as an attacking midfielder, modern football is requiring more defensive efforts from the CAM, can you make a video on how to step, when to step and what to do if you get beat. Stepping up to the player to shut them down and such, especially those wingers who use their space and speed.
The defensive feint is incredibly powerful, as often the advantage goes to the attacker due to uncertainty of where they will go that forces the defender to anticipate. However, the defensive feint shifts the power to a more balanced level between attacker and defender because now the attacker faces the uncertainty of when the defender will actually make a tackle, so that power shift can make a real difference over the entire 90 min as the attacker becomes more weary and maybe less aggressive offensively than they would have otherwise.
Great topic! I'm very average so my opinion doesn't count for much but having played and trained with people that made it pro I would place anticipation and speed of decision making only second to touch in its importance to making it pro (skill wise).
This is one of the brilliant soccer learning video ever I have watched. Always wondered why youth players crowded more attack the ball more while pro players seem to be more patient and occupy space waiting for the moment. This video opened up my eyes!
The last thing you said I've been doing that since I was in high school. I never thought of it to be a particularly high level play, but it was very effective especially against my friends who played d2. It's also a good way to save yourself from having to do a long sprint because you can just intercept the attackers long touch with a short burst and shield it or force them out of bounds if you're feeling lazy and don't want to have to turn out with the ball. I liked to put in as much effort as was needed. No more no less lol. I used it mostly on the wing near the 18 and then force them out for a gk. I feel like it's one of the few positions you can get away with not being totally goal side of the attacker. Like I guess technically they could shoot, but if you stay tight you can just stick out a leg and stop it.
I honestly really appreciate your content Matt, it has become apart of my routine to watch you each week always helping me learn something with every video.
It all comes down to knowing patterns and soccer isn't different to other sports like snooker. An amateur snooker player might be able to think a few plays ahead but a pro like Ronnie O’Sullivan will look at a table for 10 seconds and knows how he can clear the entire table without really thinking. Because he has seen so many tables during his career. It's the same for soccer players. An experienced soccer player will see the positional pattern on the field and what the possible options are and will act accordingly without much thinking.
having solid technique is not everything, and i have seen a lot of amateur level players rely on that while not improving their IQ in game. These players fall short of progressing beyond the amateur level. At the semi-pro level it's assumed players will be able to control the ball, and so the difference there is how they collaborate with their teammates to create a functioning attack or a cohesive defense. I cannot speak about the pro level.. i cannot imagine how difficult the competition is at that level.
Thanks so much for this video Matt it's come up just in time.. we're about to head out to play a top division team in our country and I'm very grateful! ❤ Plus I'm a winger so it's going to be really handy
