Finally a good video! A well-known issue in US is that coaches are so oriented to physical training that frustrates kids at very young age, not allowing them to develop natural talent. I've seen 6yo kids lifting weights, doings all kind of BS rather than enjoying the sport. Kids of 12-15 quitting football because they are not fast enough.
Great Video! I am biased as Busquets is probably my favorite player of all time alongside Laudrup and Bergkamp. I think the game IQ and anticipation is key. What I'm happy to see is something i don't see people talk about a lot, and as a 6'5 guy myself, i use constantly is tip number 5, running in front of the opponent. I wish people would teach this more openly (and i have talked to many coaches as a former adidas scout). If you can`t anticipate, and can`t make yourself faster, make the opponent slower. There is even an example at 11:35 probably unintended, but Lewandowski's Run goes diagonally across the defenders run. Zidane was also a master at trapping the ball and having that first touch towards the direction the defender was approaching him at speed, because he'd have to stop and turn 180. Its about the speed of mind and a good touch. great vid!

Off the ball vision is probably the most important thing as a slower player, im 190cm (6ft2), and slim like a greyhound, i used to play CDM, and my greatest strength was anticipation off and on the ball, if you can read the game really well, you don't need to be faster if you know where to be, football tends to be quite predictable, if you see your winger run up the line with no support, and he's doubled up, you know he's most likely going to stop, try cut inside, and the chances that one of the defenders will get a toe on it are pretty high, that'll lead to a ball slipping out at the edge of the box for you to either collect or to challenge for, or he may try look back for a pass, so make yourself available, give yourself space and anticipate everything you possibly can. There's a blessing in being able to slow down the play, but then play a pass that'll dictate tempo.

This is a great video. It's the easiest to focus on bigger and more athletic players but the most pleasant to watch in soccer is inteligent play with technical skills.
It helps being able to dribble with both feet, that way you can quickly shield the ball with either left or right leg while controlling the ball with other foot, and to make a quick turn kick the ball behind the heel of the shielding leg.
I noticed that with age, I make it up with my good technique in controlling the ball, dribbling, passing and scoring goals. Now though, it seems like I touch the ball less and less, and without you having the ball, no matter how technically amazing you are, you can't do anything without the ball in a high speed game. Football in the 90's to early 2000's, was beautiful because there is enough time for genius players to show us how beautiful their ideas are and what they can do and opening new possibilities in this beautiful sport. Nowadays it seems like you need to be on a super natural level like Messi, Neymar, Iniesta and very few others to be able to see some good dribblings, passings and scoring. Players who are slow today need to be super naturally gifted players who can do more with the ball that can compensate their lack of phycality. I always find Pirlo's saying to be a good condolences when I hear this subject; he said: "Football is played with the head, your feet are just the tools".
I don't think players like iniesta, xavi, odeegard, de bruyne, fabregas, busquests etc are super natural. It's just they've got those 5 steps down to an instinctual level via repetition it just looks so effortless when they do it
@@frozone1973 I agree with what you said, I meant something different though. I was saying that the beauty of genius players do not manifest as often with today's modern football as much as it used to in the 90's and 2000's.
@@Altair.1187 I agree with you as well. The modern game has ball playing full backs/ attacking wing backs, ball playing defenders, goal keepers needing to be good with their feet and more emphasis on tactical superiority instead of just trusting the players to do what they can in the moment. In the 90s early 2000s coaches allowed a lot of freedom which is why we see a lot of flair back then. But today's game is so mechanical and a lot more predictable (not always tho) and boring really. Last entertaining game of football I've watched was chealseas champions league semi final/ final against Barcelona and bayern Munich. Haven't felt such emotional highs since then 😭😭
4:50 bale’s touch was perfect and it was intentional he 100% knew there was a slower defender in front of him and that he would beat him with pace. The second one was bad though
It was 100% intentional and 100% a good touch… that’s not what I’m saying haha. I’m saying that if any other player tried to do that same touch it would be a bad touch because they don’t have the same pace that Bale has.
Being comfortable under pressure and being really good technically and having good positioning can also really help also passing and vision can really help
I’m a fast player watching this and a winger/striker however I hate running even tho I’m the fastest on my team so what I try to do everytime is to improve my technique abilities and not just rely on my pace so thank you for this video
Let the ball do the work. When I was 16/17 I was very lean and very explosive, but also very technical, I was one of the bests of my team at that time, but unfortunately when i turned 18 i almost ruptured a ligament on my ankle, because of that I lost that explosiveness that I had. At the end of 2019 I stopped playing football to focus on my academic career because I was getting older and couldn’t find a place in any team. Because of the COVID pandemic I stopped playing football, I went from 70kg in the begining of 2020 to 100kg to the end of 2021. I went to the gym and I lost 15kg, so in 2022 I went Back to play football but not in an amateur Level, just pick-up games. Because of my Weight and some injuries that I had in the past, I lost all of my explosiveness, but even tho I wasn’t the same as before, I still managed to change my playing style. I always played like iniesta, very good at Dribbling in tight Spaces and I was able to pass the ball very very well, but now I see myself more like Bruno Guimarães who’s also slower, but has incredible Passing ability and vision. It’s not impposible to change how you play, you just need to understand your limits and what u do best.
Matt, really good stuff. Do you have any tips on drills for practicing on some of the techniques these players use? Especially from a Winger/Attacking Player perspective.
MAN, i'd love for you to stop by and run an OTA with my JV high school team...the direction, training, advice and skill you'd provide for them to reference would be unbelievably valuable...you ever in the DC area? :)
I wouldn't say "slow pace." I'd say, "slower pace" only because these players are still faster than your regular pickup player any day of the week. Although, I do love the idea that pickup players could be as good as Busquets if they applied themselves in this manner. Brilliant video by the way! Subscribed.
When you have the ball you have the power to decide at what speed you gonna play. Thats an advantage . Usually fast players want to challenge you in a 1 vs 1 and if you and your teamates know that it also an advantage because you already know what they gonna do, always let them run the side but never the center.
Great video. I have a 12 yo he plays ECNL. He’s starting cm but the slowest on the team. I tell him this same stuff word for word almost. Going to show him this to hear you say it.
so many people neglect the importance of scanning and reading the game. Do not decide what to do when u have the ball, plan on what u want to do before making a forward movement and pass by scanning the opponents movement and before the ball gets to you, scan for opponents rushing to give pressure towards u to beat their pressure. This is significantly more important towards unathletic player when they cant abuse their strength and pace to beat the press
Some of my favorite players to watch were Iniesta, Busquets, Pirlo, Totti, Xavi, T. Muller, Zidane, Bergkamp, Modric, and Cannavaro. I learned the game through watching them.
another tip when i used to play i was a winger i was fast and very fragile use that to your advantage to make defenders foul you to create set pieces another tip as you grow in age you become slow so change positions play more in the middle it will help you adapt
The point about using misdirection and change of directions to beat players 1v1 is also the way you want to be exploiting space and trying to lose markers. I think I would say that you want to disguise how you'll use space if possible. And honestly flopping can help you win back some of those 50/50's you'll lose with faster players.
Positioning, intelligence, play 1 or 2 touches. Work on technique all the time. Scanning always to think ahead. This are the traits to play professional as a "slower" or unathletic
I get your point and agree but to call Bernardo Silva, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, Tomas Muller, Toni Kroos, Sergio Buesquets, etc., as "unathletic" because they're not going to win the 100m gold is a very clickbaity title. These players are certainly more technical than they are top sprinters, but they aren't mutually exclusive. They literally need to augment each other. Nobody was able to take the ball away from Iniesta because of his agility to change direction at pace, which requires athleticism and technique. Which brings me to my next point: athleticism simply isn't defined as pace. We know what athleticism is when we see it but sprinting itself aint it. For that reason, Adama Traore will never be considered a top footballer.
This guy is American. They measure their footballers in terms of height and weight. In reality, it’s actually harder to succeed with just pure athleticism than it is to succeed with pure skill
1. Find your “thing” ( things like anticipation, dribbling, leadership etc.) 2:39
2. Use your first touch 3:34
3. Off the ball movement 6:12
4. Change of pace and/or direction or action 7:19
5. Body between the ball and man 9:15
6. Understand and Set up faster guys 10:41

Amazing tips. Thanks a lot
Really thanks man I am really slow and this will help me alot
Matt, really good stuff. Do you have any tips on drills for practicing on some of the techniques these players use? Especially from a Winger/Attacking Player perspective.
MAN, i'd love for you to stop by and run an OTA with my JV high school team...the direction, training, advice and skill you'd provide for them to reference would be unbelievably valuable...you ever in the DC area? :)
Thanks, this was helpful!
Thank You Mate, I have suppordet you, when you have around 200 k subs. This is very good content for fotballers who have a dream to became pro.
Great video. I have a 12 yo he plays ECNL. He’s starting cm but the slowest on the team. I tell him this same stuff word for word almost. Going to show him this to hear you say it.
Great tips. Thank you.
Great insight matt
I highly recommend watching Pablo Henrique Ganso, yes that Ganso who played with Neymar at Santos
so many people neglect the importance of scanning and reading the game.
Long story short bruv you a genius,,,👊🏾✨💡💯🎯❤️✌🏾
Great video, interesting to know where I can find the player stats like the one showed in this contents
Great vid✊🏾
Nice vid, would love to see your analysis of Andrea Pirlo's game.
Great Stuff thank you 👨🏻🔧🧠🪄⚽️
Positioning, intelligence, play 1 or 2 touches. Work on technique all the time. Scanning always to think ahead. This are the traits to play professional as a "slower" or unathletic
U could get scouted by athleticism and work on techniques at the mean time. Technique and anticipation are the keys.
i have been watching you from i don't even remember years man you really post good content. i hope i will make it but i am athletic.
In reality, it’s actually harder to succeed with just pure athleticism than it is to succeed with pure skill
totti in his older days is probably the best example of a slow player that was still very good on the pitch.
