Fascinating - thank you! On a trip to the U.K. in ' 02, we just couldn't fit Liverpool in, but vowed to return - hopefully one day. We did go to London though, which included a pilgrimage to Abbey Road Studios, original Apple Corps building & some other Beatle related sites - hallowed ground my friend!

I remember as a kid around 73 seeing the Cavern club as a car park … it was all still down there except it was infilled with rubble. It was demolished to make way for an air shaft for the Merseyrail Loop line expansion. So when they started rebuilding it late 70s we were all expecting it to be the same as it was before but it wasn’t built in the same place and the entrance was further down. They built a small shopping centre on top but it was nothing like the old rat infested back Mathew Street like so many of the old Liverpool backstreets … it’s all, touristy now but at least it’s developed it’s own new cultures as at least 2 more generations have grown up going there so I guess the cavern in this format has more music history than the original Cavern ever did.

That was a historical moment in time you recall but so very sad. I have visited the new Cavern several times but as a diehard Beatles fan I really feel disappointed it's not the authentic sweaty Cellar where The Beatles and many other Mersey Bands cut their teeth.
I guess there is probably nothing of the original Club underneath that Shopping Center, Cavern Walks I think it's called. I imagine it was flattened.
I wish Liverpool City Council would have had the foresight to keep the Cavern as a listed building.

It’s amazing seeing this guys love for a gig across the other side of the pond. It’s so nice that people, like yourself sir have helped keep the profile of this place going showing that The Cavern belongs to all people of the world that love great music.

Thanks for the kind words on the cavern and my city I’m very lucky to have been born here as I’m a massive Beatles fan (obviously) btw the cavern today isn’t built on the original it’s only a few steps away there’s a wall marking it and there’s a broken brick on the wall that signifies the old entrance

Yes! The entrance is down a ways but the club itself underground is mostly on the old site

And I have to say, living here in Philadelphia I almost felt as though Liverpool was the spiritual sister to my city. We both are on a large river basin and both have a very deep working class history. I could totally see myself moving there someday.

Good job. 'The Cavern Club the most famous club in the world' is the book to get .... hundreds of nuggets of memories telling the story of the Beatles and all the supporting bands many who could have been Famous...
The Big Three were they the best? They say Brian and George and John wanted Hutch first, Ringo was the second Choice... Who was Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes? What a great sound with a Horn Section and did Eric call himself Derek and The Dominoes in tribute? you got to love the Remo 4! Check them out on youtube... What a time! So much music.. Great Read makes you wish you could be there but the book takes you there!

When we were over in Liverpool we happened to go the night that Neil Innes (of Monty Python Rutles fame) was playing Rutles songs and we saw him for a little bit. It seems like a really fun place to have serendipitous things happen
