    This Yank has several great memories of The Grapes in the early '80s. One was using the gents and taking a leak in something akin to an aluminum horse trough that was several feet long. But if it was good enough for John, Paul, George and Ringo, it was good enough for me!

    The original Caven Club was quite an experience, the all night sessions were ausum, it's true the walls driped with sweat, we were given a pass mid way through the session to give us chance to cool down , no alcohol was on sale, it just wasn't needed ,the atmosphere was electric! So many bands , you could go there any day or night time session and there was always top bands and up and coming bands to watch! It was a truly magical time,

    Great video , thanks for uploading...I recall when, as a teenager in the 70s, Mathew Street had only the Arthur Dooley tribute to The Beatles, but somehow the street had a magic then which it lacks now...There was just O'Halligan's tea rooms, Probe records and, of course, Eric's club, but when walking up the narrow cobbled street there was comfort and excitement in the knowledge that The Beatles had walked upon those very cobbles. It's sad to see the Arthur Dooley statue becoming pushed out of sight until it is almost invisible, strangled by awful, superficial Beatle themed bars and 'Tributes'...Tributes which have more to do with making money than any real love for The Beatles. I much preferred the understated, modest charm of the previous Mathew Street...but I'm so pleased that Arthur's statue remains in place as a reminder of the unblemished Mathew street of the 70s.

      Thanks for sharing your memories. I too remember Mathew Street and how it used to be - how it has changed, and not necessarily for the better either. I have always loved Arthur's sculpture too - great local artist.

    I am fascinated by the new Cavern's Fire Exit. Have you ever seen the Fire Exit door open ?
    Does it look anything like the original entrance with those famous steps ? I do know the new Cavern is deeper than the original and sits at a 45 degree angle from the old Club. Also I believe the original had 18 steps with a few of those steps going to the left as you entered the Club.

    • @BrightmoonLiverpool
      @BrightmoonLiverpool  Рік тому

      I've not seen it open, just from the other side. Nothing like the original. Yes, the new Cavern has the same 3 tunnels and thousands of the original bricks, so it is deeper down and at 45 degrees. Still well worth a visit.

      @@BrightmoonLiverpool Thanks David for the reply. I've been in the Cavern a few times but the last time I was there was at least 10 years ago.
      I am coming over to Liverpool to see The Pete Best Band play at the Casbah in 2023. I'm really excited at the prospect of that gig ..

    That long queue outside the Cavern was for non members, if you where a member and could show your current membership card you could walk straight in and down the stairs. Though after the cavern became over popular sometimes members had to que on the opposite side of the door to that long que. Oh! The memories!!!!

      @@BrightmoonLiverpool Bob Wooler and one special mid week night , Freddie Starr and his group the Midnighters where on stage and that young cloak room girl Pricilla White came up on stage (yes I know it was Cilla Black later on) they did the number "Love Potion Number 9" it was just magic with the next group on The Hollys. I do have one photograph of myself standing in front of the Cavern snack Bar proof if proof were needed I was there and the Beatles where on stage and you could hear them no screaming girls so before they where famous. There was one Liverpool club that was well attended those days but never gets a mention The Lowlands club West Derby a lot of the Liverpool groups played there in the early days including Gerry and the pacemakers though he wanted to call them Gerry Marsden and the Mars Bars, Searchers, The Chants. Mojos, and at the time my favourite group the BIG 3, plus many others whose names have slipped out of my rather aging memory now..

      Lowlands was a great venue, with the Pillar Club and 21 Club, where George played with the Les Stewart Quartet before the Casbah.
      The Big Three! I wish I could have seen them as well as all of those other great groups, not just the Beatles. I became friends with Johnny Hutch and he had some superb stories.
