Nice to see a hiking video Matti 👍 and some good safety advice about responsibilities whilst on the trail. Also your weather on the last part of the trip reminds me of hiking back home in the UK 😊 Thanks for posting 👏
My third time in Sarek this year and by Loki, so much wind and rain this year. I got blown out of Guohpervagge. Always bring something like a Garmin inReach to keep friends and family updated. Buy or rent one. Newer iPhones also have access to the Iridium network but Sweden is not supported yet. But I think its only a matter of time until everyone with a smartphone has access.
I bought my ACR ResQLink Personal Locator at the same time I bought my Garmin 62ST GPS - for that just in case emergency. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.
2 weeks ago, my wife and i were hiking in the mountains near Narvik. We got a late start and the trail was re routed, adding another 3 hours to our destination. At about 21:30 it was getting dark and THICK fog was rolling in. We had to stay the night under our tarp. There were another 4 river crossings and a steep descent before we finally reached Gautelishytta cabin.
Hej, när du var bredvid skierffe med din grupp, jag var i Ruotesvägge … så mycket regn ! Tack för din videos, jag missar ingen. Hoppas vi träffas. Stefan från Korsika och Järvsö.😅
Minute 16:50 is a sequence that was included on special request of your mother, to prove that your are a good boy brushing his teeth before going to bed? However, next time you should also document that you don't just clean them hush-hush, but show the full three minutes your dentist recommends! And in the next episode: Missing local guide after 5-day backpacking trip in foggy weather in Sarek National Park - clients have no explanation for his sudden disappearance. But seriously: Nice video, giving a good impression of the trip and nature, and the usual sprinkle of humor in between, plus serious advice based on extensive experience. Thank you. While writing this I hear the constant rain outside, and actually I will change my plans and not go hiking for the next days - much more rain to come here in the Tyrolean Alps...
Great video like always! Maybe we see you on the trail. I want to go there but not alone and I see that you have few interesting options on your web site.
Good vid Matti. Glad the hikers were ok. When I come and travel I like them will be prepared for a few days extra. You are very right over here in USA news is total bullshit. If you hear the story in the morning then evening the news is twisted more than a petzel. Hardly recognize it. Sad all the resources were wasted and exposed to bad weather. Beautiful place even in the rain. Not many bugs. All good from east Kentucky USA
I am glad you could keep your spirits up despite the weather. A stroll in the rain can be beautiful, but on a more extended trip, it starts to suck after some time. Hauntingly beautiful music! Is that traditional music in your country?
I was also in Sarek from 16-30 aug. We got stuck a few days in Rapadalen valley due to rain and high waters! Went through 1,80m deep waters to eventually get out…
I stood on the top of Skierfe last week. The weather conditions happened to be exceptionally good as well. From early morning until sunset, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. For years, I had dreamed of seeing the Rapadelta and the Rapavalley with my own eyes. It had been on my bucket list for years. Despite reaching the top of Skierfe, I couldn't really enjoy it. I was completely exhausted by the time I reached the top. I had hardly been able to eat anything along the way because I was so thirsty. It was a hot day, well above 20 degrees Celsius, which was quite unusual. I hydrated so quickly that I ran out of my 2 liters of water. There were hardly any streams along the route to refill water. Water, water, water - how do I get water? I couldn't think of anything else. Additionally, the route mainly consists of rocks, and you have to look down to avoid tripping or hurting yourself. It was quite a struggle for me to reach the top. After 5 hours of struggling, I finally made it to the top, but there was a strong wind blowing. I only stayed for a short while, took a video and a photo, then all I could think about was the way back to my tent in Aktse. Luckily, I had left my tent there with all the things I didn't need. Knowing that the weather in Sarek National Park can change quickly, I had packed a lot of gear suitable for those conditions. So, even though I wasn't carrying a heavy backpack, it was still incredibly tough for me to reach the top of Skierfe and make my way back. Once back in my tent at the bottom, I was completely exhausted and could hardly take another step. But that wasn't all. The next day, I had to walk back to my car in Sitoalvsbron from Aktse, which is another 16 km. The journey to Aktse with a full heavy backpack the day before was already difficult for me. Many people on the internet hardly mention it. The last 6 km through the forest from the boat pier to Aktse were extremely tough. As a result of the heavy backpack, as well as rocks and slippery roots, it was a real struggle for me to walk a total of 48 km, 32 km of which with a backpack, mostly on rocks. I am somewhat glad that I got to see part of Sarek with its beauty with my own eyes and presence, but I must also admit that the true wilderness is not for me. I have experienced it now and know what it means. The positive aspect is that in precarious situations, I made good decisions and improvised well when necessary. I have never before tested how much I could physically and mentally endure. In that sense, Sarek (the wilderness) has taught me something. Along the way, I came up with a saying, "Sarek gives you everything, but then you must also be willing to give everything." I felt like I had given everything, and ultimately, I made it safely and healthily back to my car. It could have gone completely wrong because I had not trained enough with a full backpack. I also needed to learn how to sleep in a tent (I could hardly sleep for 2 nights due to pain and choosing the wrong ground and spot).
That’s an adventure you have experienced! I think it’s better to make it as a 5 day trip. That’s how I make it with my customers. I have tried with less days and it’s possible but as you describe… very hard if you aren’t used with hiking in this condition. You should give it another try in the future. Shorter distances, lighter backpack and stop several times during the day for eating and drinking! Welcome back. The learning is a part of the journey. /Matti

Hi Matti, thanks a lot for your informative videos. It took me three times over the years to have good weather at Skierfe to enjoy the beautiful view of Rapadalen Valley. The last time in May this year we started the hike also like you at that parking lot. And the start was exceptional because a lonely bear cup was welcoming us 😂😂😂. Scary moment. Mama Bear was somewhere hiding in the woods and luckily didn’t show up. There is a short video on my channel. 🙋🏼♂️
I have COPD (kol) and tried together with my daughter to go to the top of Skierfe, walk the bicycle path and took the boat over to Aktse we rested and had lunch after that we started to go up to the treeline I had to pause every 2-3 meter the first km. I told my daughter many times that she should go ahead because it was getting cloudy she refused many times but finally went ahead I came to the foot of the part that goes up to Skierfe where I met her she had not reached the top because she said it was becoming too cloudy. Last autumn my aorta started leaking and I got a stroke plus pneumonia and organ failure spent one month in the ICU and another month in regular care, so this year I had to recover but next year I will try it again.
