      Thanks city rat! No secret, I just try to use good habits: weight rather than muscle (sometimes a fair bit of muscle too - like for this excerpt); adapting bow speed and placement for different sounds; imagining the sound I'm after and experimenting with the previous elements until I find it. Also, I have pretty nice instruments and bows. :)

      First, imagine the sound you are going for in your ear. It will take awhile but experiment until you discover the technical elements that create the sound you are imagining.

      Thanks, Kostas! All bass players are drawn to the sound, for sure. That's what keeps us battling the obstacles such a large instrument presents! Try to use weight, rather than muscle, as much as possible to release a big, fat tone. :)

    When playing with the E string extension, are you able to “fret” notes that are on the extension itself? Like if you set it to D are you able to play a Eb?

    • @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist
      @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist  Рік тому

      Yes, you can do that. The gates, or capos, are great for pre-setting isolated or lowest notes of a passage. Fingers can be used according to each player's personal habit. Some extensions don't have capos at all. That was very common when non-machine C extensions were first introduced.

    • @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist
      @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist  Рік тому

      This bass has what is called a "C extension". That's the thing you see along the low string side of the scroll. It allows for extra notes below E down to the C a full octave below a cello's lowest note. Orchestral bass players need these low notes all the time. The other option is a five-string bass with a low B - similar to a five-string bass guitar. Basses have always come in many shapes and sizes. Even though this very old instrument has been altered for modern playing, it's not a particularly unusual model.

    what kind of bass is this? i see the extended finger board and it’s like intriguing me

    • @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist
      @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist  Рік тому +1

      It's four-string bass so the bottom string would normally be an E. Many orchestral bass parts were written with five-string basses in mind. That extra 5th string is a low B - like with five-string bass guitars. Many of the great old basses have four strings so the best solution, in that case, is to add a custom-made extension. Well spotted! Most commonly, extensions are fitted with "capos/gates" that can be set in advance to stop any extra low notes. Others are built with "machines" that use key-activated levers to stop the lower notes. Least common are extensions without either capos or machine - just the extended fingerboard.

    what a dramatic and lyrical melody, and for the bass! .. isnt the lowest open string an E ? i hear a low Db ??

    • @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist
      @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist  2 роки тому +1

      Four-string basses' lowest string is an E but, to play the many notes in the orchestral rep that go lower, most professional players have an extension added beyond the nut that runs up the length of the scroll. The chromatic degrees are then stopped by either a combination of fingers and capos or by a levered machine.The other solution is a five-string bass with a low B.

    • @Johnwilkinsonofficial
      @Johnwilkinsonofficial 2 роки тому

      @@JeremyMcCoydoublebassist fascinating and cool. on this particular bass what is the mechanism, do you have the low C# and then it picks up again by stopping at F, or is there a way to get D Db and E ? cheers

    • @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist
      @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist  2 роки тому +1

      @@Johnwilkinsonofficial The E string has an extended length down to C. Capos (or gates) are preset, as needed, for a passage involving notes below E. If the passage involves more than one low note, the player can choose to preset the lowest tone and finger the others. The gate at the nut remains closed when no tones below E are called for.

    Why does your bass's fingerboard have a piece missing

    • @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist
      @JeremyMcCoydoublebassist  2 роки тому +4

      It used to be that bass fingerboards were somewhat shorter. With a modern set-up, most players now like to have fingerboards that go a few tones longer so that higher notes can be stopped against the board. The downside to this is that the extra length can have a dampening effect on the sound of the instrument. A good compromise is to leave the extra length under the highest string and cut it away under the lower strings. This makes it look like there's a part missing but it's really the result of a piece being added. :)

      Thanks and sorry I missed this question. Thanks to MrBlueMoose for explaining! Lots of orchestral music includes notes below the open E string so you need either a five-string bass with a low B or an extension of the E string going down to C (or sometimes a B).
