@@JeremyMcCoydoublebassist yes! It's not puirt a beul, but more like solfege, where the vowels represent relative tones and the consonants are articulations/embellishments, but it also indicates precise technique ... It was originally an oral tradition, but it eventually got written down in various ways... My roommate found a page of it written-out in my handwriting once and thought I was worshipping Satan or something! (I guess it sounds really creepy if you read it in monotone without knowing the idiom) "Hiendro darado hodin, Che o cheve edre, Hihiodrodin..." etc The only thing similar I've found is in Hindustani/Carnatic musical tradition,: with "sa,re,ga,ma,pa,dha,ni" and the rhythmic "konnakol" system, although Scottish bagpipe music does have a lot of "leftover" baroque attributes (highly ornamented, very rigidly structured, exaggeratedly emotional, but extremely specific in "mood/effekt/emotion".)

It's a sort of biographical retrospective that contains themes from all his previous tone poems. Heldenleben has several very difficult passages and this one, the dreaded #9, is on pretty much every symphonic double bass audition list. Out of all the Strauss tone poems, my personal favorite is an earlier one, Death and Transfiguration.
