I’ve been listening to a lot of violin performances by Augustin Hadelich. I have to say that I’ve been spoiled. When I played upright bass in high school and college most of my peers were better than me. Meaning that they could play pieces on the instrument that sounded musical. No upper position intonation problems etc. My teacher was a cellist who also taught bass viol. I think that this was disadvantageous. She was however a great cellist and a ethnomusicologist as well. So while I didn’t do exceedingly well with the instrument,I still could hold my own in the bass section of our orchestra, and she opened my big awkward looking ears up to music I otherwise would never had heard. She told me about Gary ,Bertram, and Francois. Bassists who somehow surpassed the physical challenges of the instrument. I never thought that I could be excellent on the big bass. I never played it after college and took up electric bass. I played in cover bands and travelled through a lot of the U.S. eventually landing in Nashville where I played with singer songwriters live and in the studio. I met and played with a few A list players along the way. Good times! To all who love music, absolutely go for it. Music saved my life. I had a really tough time as a kid. My mother was abusive and mentally ill. I was sexually abused as well because I had no one to protect me. So I’m a survivor and music is a gift from God. Look out for each other, and encourage your peers. ❤
