this is a masterclass on how you should not just sing with your voice, but your whole body/soul
This whole film is the only version of JC Superstar I've seen (and I've seen a LOT of versions!) where I feel like the cast is actually acting the songs instead of just singing them. This is a perfect example, this "Heaven...". I get that it's so hard, because the music is SO GOOD, who needs to do anything else with it but sing it great, right? but the story doesn't make sense if the songs don't organically come from the characters and have subtext and intention, and it is SO here, in this performance. #thankyouforcomingtomyTEDtalk :)
Absolutely. I saw this for the first time when I was around 12 years old, and it struck such a cord with me because this guy really seemed to be singing with his whole being. He was basically shouting at the heavens for Jesus to listen to him. I keep coming back to this part every once in a while just because of how powerful it is.
No autotune makes a world of difference, doesn't it.
Indeed
His voice, his performance...just perfect.
The ending of the song is probably the most haunting thing that’s ever been filmed. A dude screaming “listen to me” off into the distance to a person who can’t hear him.
hahaha
No. Jesus heard.
But he ignored him.
Who "won't" hear him*
I agree. I also love Jesus' song when he's alone in the mountains. When he gives himself to his fate, the music coupled with the montage of painting showing the suffering Christ is about to suffer brings me to tears.
Well said sill. Love that you noticed that! Take care friend.
The man literally upstaged JESUS. This has got to be one of greatest scenes in movie history and Carl Anderson should have been nominated for the Supporting Actor Academy Award for this.
This is lesd actor material
Ted Neeley in Gethsemane was goosebump inducing tho too
TEAM JUDAS!!! JESUS WAS THE CRAZY ONE. God is sadistic and cruel...if he ever exists. I'd like punch him in the face.
Best song, Best singer, Best actor (not supporting actor).
To be fair, Judas pretty much IS the lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar. He's the point-of-view character, we're being shown the events leading up to the crucifixion from Judas' perspective.
It doesn’t matter if your Theist, atheist or agnostic, this movie has some incredible songs.
Agreed, this entire musical is a banger
I'm an atheist and I've always loved the music from JCSS. The message it has is also pretty dope.
Yes As A Christian I honestly still appreciate that this Musical and Story Can still be enjoyed by a secular Audience.
But seriously Read the book Boi
@@rimfire8217 I've read the book, boi. That's why I'm an atheist lol
Rimfire 82 The movie is better imo
Anderson doesn’t sound like he’s singing in a Rock Opera. He’s sounds like a desperate, anxiety ridden, lost soul at the end of his tether.
That’s why his performance eclipses every other that came after.
You got it....they really pit everything into their parts
that's fair.
I like this. This actor or another wondered if was right for him as a black man should take such a part but it was I believe originally written for a black voice. I love this song and the end song " If you came today you would have reach the whole nation/ Isreal in four B.C. had no mass communication. Great lyrics in this whole production.
For sure.....he totally nails it.
@@johncook7281 Hi, don't know if it was originally written for anyone in mind. Murray Head did the original. I had the album at a young age. When the movie came out I was never the same! I think when Ted and Carl auditioned for the movie Ted was auditioning for Judas. Or at least that's what the Director was thinking. They both were in the Broadway version in New York. I guess when they got there (Jerusalem I think) the parts picked them. Sorry if I'm wrong on any of this. Take care.
It's not the most famous song of "Jesuchrist Superstar", but for me, it's the best of all.
its also my favorite song from this. judas has all the best songs and this version is the best of all the JC SS I've seen (I've seen 4 of them)
Every things all right.
Carl covers himself in GLORY!! This version is Immortal! One Love
It’s defenetly the most challenging of the songs too.

“You’ve begun to matter more than the things you say.”
What a brilliant line!
All of this man's lyrics in the movie are full of powerful lines. Both his voice and his lyrics are an ecstatic experience
"it was beautiful but now it's sour ... yes it's all gone sour ..." 45 years later and I still get goosebumps. Every time.
Time slows for me at the moment of this line.
Same here
I agree
Affects me too

4:05 The best part about the "listen" is how he sounds desperate and in agony. So raw, visceral, and emotional
All the other “listen to me”s were powerful in their own right but something about that specific one. He’s not just wailing in agony he’s pushing to get that out. You can feel how strained he was shouting that. It’s So fucking good.
" And they'll hurt YOU when they find THEY'RE wrong.." 🙏
..my dad was obsessed with this " 8 track" and I listened to it a million times in late 70s..lol..by 6 I could sing the entire movie..and STILL LOVE IT..no one sings from their soul like Sir Carl did ..
And- Tim looked EXACTLY like I think most of us picture Jesus♡. no fancy lights ,effects, computers,,this is all Raw talent
I think this version has the best "JEEESUUUUUUUUUS"
You hear the anger, frustration, disappointment and desperation behind the voice.
And the care
Excellent, he reprise his role with Neely, tour lasted five years, made $100 mil. He married Mohamed Ali's ex!
This guy's voice is breakin' my heart. It's that good. I literally clapped when the video ended, that voice and that performance was so damn good.
It really is genius.
@@Hannah11235 It really is, the songs are genuinely beautiful.
@@babyblue_22 the movie is pretty entertaining to watch. One of those 70s cult classics everyone has to see
I was 16 when it first came out. Carl Andersen blew me away.
I watched this a week ago in castro theater. 70 mm. It was an AMAZING experience. Oh and Ted Neely and Yvonne Elliman were there as well :)
The singing talent, the passion, the intensity. This is why Carl was and has been the best Judas. Truly a legend.
Agreed
After 2:37, when he sings "Have you forgotten how put down we are?" and his tone changes, it is amazing. He is a brilliant singer and performer.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the utterly killer riffage here? This is so much fun to play on guitar!
IT IS KILLER!!!! The music is amazing!! No other version of this ever sounded this cool!!!
I would agree. That riff on the D-minor runs over the entire beginning verses, even though the chord changes don't seem to support it. Such a dissonant riff with that chromatic step. They use half step chromatic changes a lot in, like, suspense scenes in horror movies.
And that 7/8 breakdown in the middle is SO difficult to fit in with the effortlessness the orchestra pulls off, and they clap the last 3 counts, which I always loved.
I thought I had an appreciation for this soundtrack until I figured out how to play it.
Exquisite.
Die by my hand. :D
Stereo MC’s sampled it too!
@grandhotelabyss, when was Talagh first released? The album Jesus Christ Superstar was released in October 1970.
You can really hear the desperation in his voice as he's begging Jesus just to listen to him. Incredible performance.
I wonder if the world would be the same if he had.
Best portrayal of Judas, EVER! The powerful voice, his facial expressions, his emotions, Perfection! RIP Carl Anderson!
The best JUDAS performance
No one has touched Carl since.
It’s so weird to think that Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the best rock song in musical theater history, but here we are.
Raulbikcube
As far as I am concerned, it’s the only good thing he’s ever done.
He didn’t write this
Lew Archer 1949 I love cats, and Joseph, seen both many times. But oh my. Jesus Christ has to be his best.
Don’t forget lyricist Time Rice!
@@Daniel-xu6kd Umm, he did though
This musical is a damn masterpiece. Not only is the music heart-wrenchingly honest, true and raw, but the psychological interpretation of the characters and the situation is unique, realistic and fascinating. And the not-too polished voices from the 70s capture every drop of tears, sweat and blood in the story. Why oh WHY doesn't this get the same acclaims as Hamilton?!
I mean, it kinda did get the same acclaim as Hamilton back in the '70s (at least as an album) despite being extremely controversial
Your critique of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ had such potential of coming across as brilliantly spot-on, however you did make one epic flaw, when it comes to writing a review on a Christian religion based song and play…I might advise you that it may not be the best idea in your opening sentence to use the term “goddamn“.
I am generally a person that is very hard to offend, unlike most people these days, but clearly the people that are going to listen to this soundtrack and know and watch this masterpiece of a script and score Will most likely not appreciate taking the Lords name in vain. You should probably know your audience of readers.
@@BrokenChips Well, I'm sorry if I've offended you. I, however am not Christian nor am I well-acquainted with their customs. This is the first time I have ever in my life encountered a genuine "do not say the Lord's name in vain" complaint. I thought that was more of an urban myth than anything. But, since it apparently is a real thing, I shall amend the offending phrase.
@@undertasty Thank you. I do then apologize as well for my own assumptions. I now understand your stance on the matter. I suppose I simply never expected someone to watch/listen to this performance outside of said religion...let alone enjoy it with such conviction. I am almost embarrassed to had come off closed minded...that may not have been very “Christian” of myself if I’m looking to set an example. Well, thank you, my apologies, and have a wonderful day/evening.
@@BrokenChips Thank you, too. It never occurred to me I said something that could offend someone, so thank you for telling me. And, you know, you don't need to be a Christian to appreciate the art, or recognize the psychological truth, historical significance or emotional gravitas of this piece, or any piece of art based on any religion. It can still move and edify you, even if it is based on something outside your belief system. At least, that is what I think :) Have a lovely day and night as well.
i’m not religious. like, at all. but this will always be one of my favourite musicals because of the music and the sheer emotion showed by the characters and i love seeing things through judas’ lens
Me either, and yet when I saw this movie (in the theaters) in '73, as a child, it was more powerful than any of the church my parents used to drag me to. It was truly a religious experience, and it has stuck with me since.

Great music = great music, no matter the inspiration. Greatings by a fellow atheist!
It's my case too. I'm an atheist but this musical is amazing. And this song is my favorite of the musical but they're all great.
Am I allowed to say that I am NOT an atheist? I still think that this musical is magnificently overwhelming to everyone because it depicts human nature in it's most inhumane moments...
I was SOOO lucky to see Carl perform this role before he passed. He is the best

The wife and I saw JCS in Pasadena in 1993. Anderson and Neeley did not disappoint.
Interestingly we were outside after the show and were hoping to catch a glimpse of Anderson or Neeley. We are not the kind that squeeze and elbow to the front of the crowd; but Carl Anderson saw us about 25 ft away, came out and took my wife by the arm and brought her aside and she was able to have a few words with him. Strange kind of wonderful.
we are lucky to have this period
He sang this with such passion, as if he'd lived the lyrics himself. It's one of the most memorable vocal performances I've ever heard.

Stress hormones cause confusion and doubt, stress, anxiety, fear, paranoia, detachment form self, confusion in mind and body, a cutting off to self, a lack of self esteem and confidence, a lack of connection thereby no trust, security faith nor peace. The main human right we need to stand up for is mothers and babies/children to be together. The stresses start with separation too young. Mothers and their babies and children need the adoring love of each other. Gold - the least tarnishable and the most positively charged element. This is how we need to be with a positive mindset of faith with grace. @@Se7Tripz Honestly so sympathetic with Judas. Jesus was a total jerk to him.
Yeah, Judas loved Jesus so much, that he regularly stole from their purse, and then sold him for 30 pieces of silver. Makes perfect sense! (for those who obviously never read the Gospels)! For those who really sympathize with the Judas of the Gospels (and not just the acting presented in this movie), you're ignorant of the story of the Gospels and miss the sarcasm presented by the film makers trying to show what Judas could say to justify himself. This movie is either a show of the fake front and justifications that Judas would give to explain his betrayals, or the film's makers were ignorant of the story of the Gospels. Either that, or the film makers really do know the Gospels but hate the message, and are trying to subvert people's knowledge, if any, of the Gospels, by justifying Judas for his betrayals, or trying to fool people who never read them by justifying the corrupt viewpoint of Judas (as presented here, no where else) as the main message of this movie.
@@bouncyballblue well... iono about a TOTAL jerk. I think (in this case) Jesus, being human, let the whole thing evolve while Judas held true to what he felt was the original concept. Like, judas clung to the black and white while Jesus was discovered all the colors of the spectrum between them. Judas wanted Jesus to be a certain way and it was simply against his nature.
@@Yasharrrrr It's not sarcasm. It's a different interpretation. Did you not notice how Judas descends to the stage from above, dressed in white, after he killed himself? The implication was that Judas goes to heaven, not hell.

Gives me chills everytime. I love the depiction of Judas not as this great betrayer but almost as a the level headed straight man to Jesus's narrative. While this movie has it's camp, this musical is incredibly timeless
В начале 20в был такой писатель - Леонид Андреев. И в его повести "Иуда Искариот" интересный взгляд на трагедию Иуды. Если попадется- почитайте
the gospel of Judas is a super interesting apocryphal read as well, depicting Judas as a loyal disciple who Jesus trusted to "betray" him to the Romans in order to save mankind.
Judas becomes a tragic character, torn about the betrayal he must do for his friend Jesus.
super interesting take.
@@HadalStreetlights Even if none of this stuff happened (as written, due to... a couple thousand years passing lol), I do love different takes that show sides like that. It doesn't disprove anything about the religion at all, while showing a more human side to Judas.

If you strip away the myth from the man,
You will see where we all soon will be.
Jesus!
You've started to believe
The things they say of you.
You really do believe
This talk of God is true.
All all the good you've done
Will soon get swept away.
You've begun to matter more than the things you say.
Listen Jesus I don't like what I see.
All I ask is that you listen to me.
And remember, I've been your right hand man all along.
You have set them all on fire.
They think they've found the new Messiah,
And they'll hurt you when they find they're wrong.
I remember when this whole thing began.
No talk of God then, we called you a man.
And believe me, my admiration for you hasn't died.
But every word you say today
Get's twisted 'round some other way.
And they'll hurt you if they think you've lied.

Like his father carving wood
He'd have made good.

He'd have caused nobody harm, no-one alarm.
Listen Jesus, do you care for your race?
Don't you see we must keep in our place?
We are occupied; have you forgotten how put down we are?
I am frightened by the crowd.
For we are getting much too loud.
And they'll crush us if we go too far.
Listen Jesus, to the warning I give.
Please remember that I want us to live.
But it's sad to see our chances weakening with every hour.
All your followers are blind.
Too much heaven on their minds.
It was beautiful but now it's sour.
Yes it's all gone sour......
Damn, it’s both impressive and sad how this song alone has more depth, complexity, character development, and more interesting discussions and ideas about religion than most religious films today
"you've began to matter more than the things you say" is literally Christianity today
"Every word you say say today gets twisted round some other way "
Identifying with Judas miiiight be missing the point.
Not at all, and I never spoke bad about Jesus or the Lord, I agree with pretty much everything Jesus has said.. it's the Christians today that ignore the teachings of Jesus and make Jesus himself matter more than his teaching. Almost like worshipping a singer and not even listening to their music
Modern christians are basically the pharisees. They've entirely missed the point, and twisted the religion around to meet their ends.
It takes a pretty broad brush to paint two billion people with a single stroke. You're overgeneralizing.
It's so rare when a performer is able to not only accomplish the highest goals of a songwriter but add elements that they didn't even realize they wanted. This is the epitome of that in the last century. Anderson takes the already great lyrics and music and elevates every part of it with his body language, vocal power and passion. When I want to see how people should sing, I always come back and watch this.
The best Judas and best rendition of this song. Period.
Murray Head vocals outperform this. Still love both versions
I think Murray Head laid the blueprint, but his performance did not convey the urgency, danger, and desperation that Anderson was able to impart in his version. Not only does Anderson demonstrate more range, but, more importantly in terms of setting up the rest of the musical he is able to make the audience immediately understand the passions and torment that are tearing Judas apart inside, helping us to believe the actions that Judas takes in the rest of the musical.
ORET LØD KÆRLIGHED OG ORET VAR GUD JUDAS KLAGESANG.
No idea how he didn’t win an Oscar for this, he was superb, I can’t ever like another Judas he is so difficult to live up to! It’s almost a shame how early on in the musical this song/scene is bc it is by far the best.
I'm basically obsessed with this whole rock opera. Carl Anderson is amazing, the emotion and the passion and the meaning behind every word is just UGH YES

Woo! It’s been years since I’ve seen it. I just remembered this song while doing chores and I was humming it and was like - O_O “Omg I need to listen to that song RIGHT now” so I’m here :p Listened to it four times in a row and am realizing my appreciated for this song has deepened even more over the years
The Anderson version sounds like a friend venting to themself and despairing because their friend won’t listen to what he’s saying, realising the friend isn’t going to listen, and being worried about the consequences , the minchin version sounds like Judas is trying to get people to listen to him because he’s actually scared of what could happen, and getting more panicked the more he’s ignored. They’re both good versions, and you can’t really compare them bc they’re so different and the scenes have different intentions.
I can't get over how overwhelming good this perfomance is. It doesn't matter how often I listen, I still feel like this everytime.

Mankind in God's Spirit, not a sinner being sin rich and desperate Gollum Manmean. What a brilliant image of sinning man or woman Gollum represents and the origin of the word is from Israel.
When darkness comes the light fades. When we are sick, the colours fade, as the spirit fades the sickness and darkness comes within each and everyone of us.
The challenge is to turn away from sin and unrighteousness.
Can we say no to temptation like Joseph did? Joseph shows us integrity to God's Love is possible. So can you understand the coat of many colours is the positive Light energy of God's Love, the obedience, integrity and virtuosity with obedience to God's laws for Love and Light to prevail? The energy and vitality of our endorphin blood, The Whole Spirit of Love dwelling in us, Love Anointed, Jesus Christ, Yeshua Hamashiach, The Holy Spirit dwelling with us. The Golden aura from The Golden Rule to Love all neighbours as ourselves. The Golden aura of the saints is from attaining to Light through moral Love and kindness and good simple living in accord with The Golden Rule.
If God's Word is not about conquering sin for healing for Love to prevail, then I do not know what The Word is for. Do you?
So please pray as our Lord Jesus Christ instructs us to pray in The Lord's Prayer and if you do the sign of the cross on your body then please run upwards direction from heart to head. This follows the healthy flow of the central meridian which affects brain and thinking ability. Running the cross down from head switches off this positive flow and inhibits clear thinking. Yes, get out of false religion if you do not want to be party to her gross sin and hypocracy. Truth. Only truth will set us free.
We must say no to so called ' guilty pleasures ' what an oxymoron those words are.
Heaven is coming down to Earth when we can conquer fear and sins which cause all anxiety, guilt, sickness and disease.
Heaven will come to Earth when we can be obedient to God's Love and Light for Healing All Nations and Heaven on Earth as promised by God who is Love through Jesus Christ who teaches us to Love our enemies as well. Amen. Ameen. Shalom.Namaste...Twofold Peace within and without from a quiet conscience with self and God.
NEVER is Jesus' sacrifice meant as a scapegoat to allow sin, NEVER. What disregard for His sacrifice. Men, man sinned then by not upholding God's justice didnt they!
Man still sins by giving in to disgusting lusts, especially on screen.
Relationships are struggling everywhere. Women are becoming men, providing as well as caring, losing out on motherhood. Where are the men? Men becoming women too because we all want and need the true adoring mother love. We all need a mother and Father for the fullness of God's Love. A lacking leaves wanting and hormone confusion. God's #Loveisnotacortisol. Modern life robs babies from mothers and robs babies from mothers, their physical needs met, but not their emotional needs met. I would say Emotional Intelligence is intelligence and sensitivity for the fullness of the senses too. Modern life robs children of their parents and robs husbands from their wives doesn't it. Homes left empty to pay the overpriced housing prices and children's on screens. This is not Life as God intends is it? NEVER.
The End is the beginning of The Word endorphin, His Love made whole and One in us for Healing for All Nations and Heaven on Earth as promised by God who is Love through the whole spirit of Love Anointed, namely Jesus Christ, Yeshua Hamashiach. Amen. Ameen. Shalom. Namaste... Twofold Peace for All Nations and Heaven on Earth as promised. Please pray our Lord and Saviour Prayer as He asks us to do.
Our Father who art in Heaven
Hallowed be thy name Thu Kingdom come Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us as we forgive others who trespass against us and lead us not into temptations but deliver us from evil for thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever Amen.
It is so empowering and strengthening to turn away from sin. Every time we turn away from sin and evil temptations we get an endorphin shot of God's Love, the best antidepressant there is. Every time we sin in thought word and deed we get guilt, shame, anxiety and stress. God's #Loveisnotacortisol stress hormone but a naturally occuring endorphin blood made whole and One in us from living by God's righteous Love and justice for Peace of mind from the Holy Spirit of righteous Love for the peace that excell all thought, The Peace of and for Heaven on Earth. Jesus Christ is coming quickly...
Now how can we end abonmimations such as this?

May God help us turn Hell on Earth to Heaven on Earth by our willing obedience of and for His glorious Love to prevail. And God's glorious Love gives us fulfilment beyond anything manmade for the fullness of of joy and pleasure in our mind, body and spirit. Come Lord Jesus Come...

2021 and still... every time I hear this version of the song, the hair stands up on the back of my neck and I fight back tears. That fight is never successful. Carl was an absolute master at the peak of his abilities. His virtuoso performance in this film will continue to inspire and terrify us for generations to come.
Let's face it, Judah is the main character in this thing
Jesus Christ Superstar is performed from Judas's point of view so you are correct
The country?
I'm not religious at all, but this is one of my absolute favorite musicals. The music is just way too good.
I low-key liked this when I was a kid but watching it now just wow these performances and the visuals are really the definition of sublime.
even as a fifth-grader in a Catholic school, it was really interesting and cool to conceptualize a version where Judas was kind of the protagonist, the one who moved the narrative forward, and also to realize that this was all pre-ordained so it was so unfair to damn him for it because he never even had a choice about it
And he wasn't damned. He descended on to the stage dressed in white, implying that he went to heaven.
It's like Tim minchin said.
If God doesn't exist, then judas was right, and jesus was a lunatic who was going to get a lot of people killed. If he does, then judas was his pawn and there was nothing he could do. Either way, judas did what he could, and you can really feel in this song that he's just a guy trying to do the right thing.
Jon Skindzier God knowing he would do it doesn’t mean he was ordained to. Quite the contrary, we all have a choice until the last second....
@Gamdes He didnt "love" jesus. He loved money more than God.
Judas was wrong in every aspect . And he realised this in the end . But it was too late.
He couldn't go to Heaven since he comitted suicide, and that is a capital sin.
My mind is clearer now
At last all too well
I can see where we all soon will be
If you strip away
The myth from the man
You will see where we all soon will be
Jesus!
You started to believe the things they say of you
You really do believe this talk of God is true
And all the good you've done will soon get swept away
You've begun to matter more than the things you say
Listen Jesus I don't like what I see
All I ask is that you listen to me
And remember, I've been your right hand man all along
You have set them all on fire
They think they've found the new Messiah
And they'll hurt you when they find they're wrong
I remember when this whole thing began
No talk of God then we called you a man
And believe me, my admiration for you hasn't died
But every word you say today
Gets twisted round some other way
And they'll hurt you if they think you lied
Nazareth your famous son
Should have stayed a great unknown
Like his father, carving wood
He'd have made good
Tables, chairs and oaken chests
Would have suited Jesus best
He'd have caused nobody harm
No one alarm
Listen Jesus, do you care for your race?
Don't you see, we must keep in our place?
We are occupied
Have you forgotten how put down we are?
I am frightened by the crowd
For we are getting much too loud
And they'll crush us if we go too far
If we go too far
Listen Jesus to the warning I give
Please remember that I want us to live
But it's sad to see our chances weakening with every hour
All your followers are blind
Too much heaven on their mind
It was beautiful but now it's sour
Yes it all Gone Sour
Listen Jesus to the warning I give!
Please Remember that i want us to live!
So, Come on Come on
He won`t Listen to me
Come on Listen
Come on and Listen to Me
Listen Listen to me
Come on and Listen to me
Listen to me ME!

The incomparable Carl Anderson. The good do die young. His work should live forever.
Blindfolded or not, this performance was and forever will be a masterpiece. The range of emotions in his voice and inflections is so palpable. In the video he is practically crawling from afar struggling to be heard. Thank you, dad, for showing me this movie 22 years ago. This scene is electrifying and is literally one of the greatest things I’ve ever witnessed in this life and it only gets better with age.
He just kills it in this song. No one’s come close. ❤️
This is the song that keeps getting better, even after decades.
Saw it when I was 13 and couldn't believe I was seeing anything as cool. I came from a Roman Catholic background with nuns and priest educators that I didn't embrace nor believed. I got beat alot lol. It changed my life and my conciousness forever. I have great love for this movie and always will.💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

Best performance of the entire work. His anguish sounds so real and heartfelt.
I play this soundtrack every Easter. Peace.
I play it about 300 days out of the year.
I watch 2 movies at Easter, this one and The Life of Brian.
it was our tradition to watch this every easter when we dye easter eggs!
It's my family's tradition to play it every Easter too! Cheers!

No one can beat Carl Anderson as Judas. What a great voice and performance R I P
I'm not really a fan of musicals, but this is definitely the best that I've ever seen. I was just a boy when I saw this. I was blown away and I remember thinking, "Now, this is how you tell the story of Christ."
WHO'S LISTENING TO THIS DURING QUARANTINE 2020.
Because of Jesus, souls are saves, no one else can cause such a great gift.
Hands down this is the best performance of one of the most powerful songs ever. ❤️
No computers, no scenery, must have been a zillion degrees..this is Timeless ,regardless of What God,if any you talk to....Carl, Ted..Yvonne..THEIR VOICES were made for this.
Computer will be useless if human have no art sense... And i see it right now... Skibidi toilets only proof my words
In 1973 voor het eerst gezien en is daarna nooit meer uit mijn geheugen geweest, dit was zo kneitergoed❤
Best song from Jesus Christ Superstar. allmost 50 years ago I saw this movie and still love it very much. Anderson died a long time ago but he's still alive iin this song
Carl's voice makes me get chills every time I listen to this song, he's wonderful! My favourite track from Jesus Christ Superstar!
This guy is just amazing. He is truly living the character and I believe every second of it.
This whole musical goes to show how ahead of the curve Jesus was. He didn’t care about the “big picture” (that his preaching was gonna get Jerusalem trampled by Rome) because he saw the much bigger picture. Jesus came to act as an example of how to live and love others; as well as be the ultimate sacrifice and forgive mankind of sin. He didn’t care to be a war general because that wasn’t his goal. He didn’t care about staying quiet because it didn’t matter to him; he was above fear of Rome and all else.
He is just a pawn. Everything was fixed by God. It’s all an act but I ain’t buying it. This god is manipulative and sadistic if you ask me so I would punch him in the face if I could.
When my kids were young, we belonged to the local student church. The priest, Father Jim, had a gorgeous voice. Every Palm Sunday, they would act out the Passion in songs, many of them from Jesus Christ Superstar. We were desolate when he was transferred.
2:48 so good, I have yet to find anyone who gives me chills like this version can. Carl Anderson was in a league of his own may he rest in peace
Without a doubt the best vocal talent in the cast. Ted nealy hits the high notes and give that rock feel that you think of in hair bands. This is one of my favorite movies of all times and as a believer in Christ i feel I'm right back in time.
If I'm not mistaken , Neeley's parts were sung by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple.
David Ransome Here: I was a friend and co musician of Carl Anderson in the 60s. We perform at the Byrd land club in Washington DC in with TNT TRIBBLE . Carl was an amazing person, good personality, extremely good voice and everyone like him. Carl passed away years ago right after marriage to Muhammad Ali formal wife Veronica. If Carl was here today he would have said that the people doing that time we're all black. So why he shouldn't play the part as Judith? Carl never bit his tounge he allway spoke his mind, and he was a great person. RIP Carl. Bass player Dave.
How tall was he?
In the movie, he looks to be towering over some of the actors.
@@mindya1799 * Iam 5feet 9" tall Carl was a little taller . He was about 6 feet tall and one hell of singer.
he would say hebrews were black? lol
@@mindya1799 When have Jews ever been known to be black? Furthermore, when has that part of the World been exclusively black as you claim?

Do you comprehend English?
I asked how tall the man was.
I love this song
It has layers
For me he's speaking with hypocritical Christians
Pleading with jesus for clarity among the masses
Gold and what we need right now
Just a musical. Don’t take it seriously.
This can be a song for atheists lol
Something i ABSOLUTELY LOVE about this movie and something that people don't often talk about when commenting about it is the audio mix. You know this is a movie, right? They obviously couldn't sing these songs live (although some presumptious directors feel it should be that way, just see the "Les Miserables" and some parts of the "Cats" movie to see where I'm coming from), but they didn't make a sloppy job on post production either. It SOUNDS as if they were singing live, not just because of this amazing mix, but because all of the actors made an AMAZING job knowing exactly how, when and where to sing their specific lines. Put the 2000 version in contrast, where it sounds as if we were watching a movie without sound being synchronized with a music album (one of the reasons I don't like the 2000 movie version). Also, kudos to Norman Jewison, the 1973 movie's director.
I grew up watching this in the 90s and I loved it. Still love it. I can just see how the world viewed god, jesus, religion and race. The only Black man in the movie is the traitor, but Jesus is a spitting image of that Jesus that be hanging on walls in living rooms.
A masterclass. A vocal range todays artists could only dream of.
Damn, I get choked up every time I hear this. Such a powerful performance.
It's like Tim minchin said.

There's a really interest novel by CK Stead called "My Name Was Judas" which is a retelling of the story from Judas' point of view. It's worth looking into, it does posit that Jesus was a lunatic though so it's not for everyone.
Iuri Grangeiro God does exist, we are far too intricate to be brought to fruition as a result of a random event. In addition to our intricacies, we are coded to exist and something animates us or we wouldn’t.
@@stephanieromaynehebert3660 that debate is not the point of the comment. Go proselytize elsewhere.
@@iurigrang even if God didn't existed Judas wasn't right, backstabbing someone is never right in any book, even if your friend thinks he's a prophet, more people died from communism/socialism and other ideologies than religion, you're the one proselytizing your thoughts and beliefs first so you have to accept other people's beliefs and opinions without shutting them down just because of their beliefs, that's what Judas did, so we go back to your point in the post... So on that sense, if God didn't existed, what Judas did was very wrong(betraying a friend to the authorities for something silly as a belief which you can't discriminate in the law), if God exists then what Judas did was necessary and forgiven by Christ, no harm was done, and he served a righteous purpose.
@@BogusLion my original post says "if god exists, then X, if he doesn't, then Y". If you wanna debate if these hypotheticals are correct, then sure, but I'm not proselytizing if I'm not championing either choice. The "does God exist?" debate is not the debate I want to have here.
I'm Jesus christ superstar, judas didn't betray Jesus because they believed in different things like you seem to be proposing. He did to avoid getting everyone killed, which he did avoid. Maybe that's not how it goes in the Bible, so you might be right after all, but at the very least in the musical, if God doesn't exist judas did save many lives by betraying Jesus.
The director of this film, Norman Jewison, kept Carl and Ted Neely( Jesus) separated for entire film and only let them interact on camera in order to create natural tension between the men. Brilliant idea and it absolutely worked..
No one… and I repeat no one has ever sang this song as good since this man! Smh… Wow!
Best Judas ever! No one else even comes close.
one does, Murray Head who played Judas on the original recording
Murray Head doesn't have this kind of performance. Carl Anderson is way too far.
Dylan Rengifo I like both to be honest. They both played the part very well and you hear the emotion and pain in both. When I was younger I honestly thought it was the same person. Carl Anderson stayed true to Murray Head
I grew up listening to the original concept album. This performance is stunning, but for me Carl Anderson sings Judas, Murray Head IS Judas.
