Jesus Christ Superstar redub - Damned For All Time / Blood Money

  • This is the fourth of several extracts from my redubbed version of this classic film. As if afraid that we'd be unable to hear the words, the producers pushed the backing music so far down in the mix that it is at times almost inaudible. I have replaced the worst-affected parts of the soundtrack with the mostly superior mixes from the LP. The vocals are still crystal clear, albeit with a hint of studio echo which I admit takes away some of the location ambience, but the louder instrumentation makes the overall effect of the movie far more powerful.

Carl Anderson was by far the best Judas in all of history no matter what anyone says. He had the voice and he had the pain that Judas was going through

@@Maca64N Haha superb answer. I'm pretty certain the Bible doesn't say he was dealt "shitty cards"... More like, it was a rotten business but he was the man to do it, as he was perfectly willing anyway. In that regard, he was brilliantly portrayed in this movie.

Carl Anderson showed us Judas just like a man. Not like a devil, but just like an ordinary man with his doubts and his weaknesses
For me he was the real prominent character of the story.

Right on. I’m not religious but I’m a believer in the bible as an historical note. But also as a metaphor book as a fable. But Judas as you said was flawed. Someone I will listen to because of this. A true god in every sense of the word as we are all gods. But also human and flawed but also miraculous

I think there's more or less a general consensus that the opera was written with a focus on Judas. Also, on all the controversial figures in Jesus' story, like Pontius Pilate and Mary Magdalene. I studied literature and hearing the text, I'm pretty sure Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber wanted to tell us exactly what you describe :-)

that "well done judas, good old judas" is the best part of the song. the angels singing in mercy and kindess towards this historically damned figure. it really emphasises the tragedy of his story and the empathy that the audience feel for him. it shows despite his tragic ending of suicide, the angels still sing for his comfort. he was a neccissary piece in the puzzle. the idea the angels are watching over him is such a beautiful thought

Powerful, pivotal scene for the character of Judas, so perfectly portrayed and sung by Carl. His torn emotions are all over his face. I love how this scene begins with the tanks, symbolizing the power of The Roman occupation ( or maybe the grip of evil ). Remember how Judas in the opening scene expressed his fears of Rome and their occupation ? His betrayal of Jesus is brought about by his fears and lack of faith in who Jesus was. He was afraid the gospel message was “ getting much too loud “. The fear of having to defend the ministry of Jesus and knowing of the Zealots who thought the Messiah was going to lead a movement against Rome was plaguing him. I don’t think he understood that Jesus was born to be the sacrificial lamb. At the end of the scene, You see the “ flyover”, the power , as the jets fly ahead and split to each side, leaving Judas on the ground as if a force released him from its grip. The mix of old and new and the symbolism in this movie are masterful.

The way I see it, this movie doesn’t stand on the religious part of jesus’ story and it actually shows how it may have really happened, he started believing what some people said, that he was sent by god, even the son of god. Also the point of view of Judas, his political reasons for not believing in the way Jesus message was portraying himself, makes for a plausible and pragmatic perspective. And I appreciate that there are no just evil guys here, even Herod point of view makes sense. It makes me almost have sympathy for Jesus himself :p

Sadly, much of my hard work has gone, as all my other JCS re-dub videos got removed. I wish Universal would do an official re-dubbed reissue to justify their censorship. Apologies for the small picture, but I published the video in 4:3 just as UA-cam switched to widescreen.

+flashbackcaruso son of a bitch. you know you can dispute the copyright claim because YOU made the remix and by that it becomes fair use? Please upload it to a dailymotion dot com or another place - and inform me by replying here - so that we can enjoy. As someone who really hates Jesus and loves this musical, I'd like to see the other songs. I love the entire soundtrack.

    • @flashbackcaruso

I might re-do them in the correct ratio, as they look a bit small in 4:3 letterbox. Is Dailymotion as targeted by copyright claims as UA-cam?

I love how the show throws Judas' logic right back at him. Earlier he criticized Mary for using her money to do something nice for Jesus when she could have given it to the poor. While here Judas is being asked to help destroy Jesus in exchange for money he could use to help the poor with. Pretty heavy when you think about it
