Monteverdi's incomparable setting of Ottavio Rinuccini's "Zefiro Torna," the Western Wind. Enjoy the delightful word-painting as it flows by, such as the echoing highs and lows of "monti" (mountains) and "valli" (valleys); the ripples of "mormorondo" (murmuring) and the ever-dancing ciaccona. Featuring Thomas Cooley & Christopher LeCluyse, tenors; Elisabeth Reed, baroque cello, Katherine Heater, chamber organ; Hanneke van Proosdij, harpsichord; David Tayler, baroque guitar. Live video from the San Francisco Early Music Ensemble Voices of Music "Zefiro Torna" Concert, 2009.
Zefiro torna e di soavi accenti
l'aer fa grato e'il pié discioglie a l'onde
e, mormoranda tra le verdi fronde,
fa danzar al bel suon su'l prato i fiori.
Inghirlandato il crin Fillide e Clori
note temprando lor care e gioconde
come vuol mia ventura, hor piango hor canto.
The Western Wind returns, and with gentle touch
Renews the air and sweeps his foot across the waves
And makes the green branches sing softly
Makes the flowers of the field dance the sweet sound;
Crowns with garlands Phyllis and Chloris
Tempers their love with just note and accent,
From mountains high and valleys deep
And from caverns that echo with harmony
Dawn soars into the heavens, and the sun
Radiates beams of gold, and purest silver
Adorns the azure cloak of Thetis.
But I, abandoned and alone,
Sing and weep for the two beautiful eyes
That are my torment and fate.
--David Tayler
The first time I heard Zefiro Torno (about 10 years ago) it stirred something in me that made me cry ; I thought at the time that it was just overwrought emotions. But I've just heard it again and find myself with tears in my eyes - it's simply magical music. No other explanation. :o)
thank you so much for sharing this kind of music.. it makes me feel alive
one of the most magnificent pieces of music. I first heard this sung about 40 or mor years ago on an LP by russell oberlin and charles bressler with the NY Pro Musica Antiqua conducted by Noah Greenberg. The performance and the music seared my mind and soul. This is also a great performance
I discovered this piece about 40 or 50 years ago performed by the great Noah Greenberg madrigal group with Russell Oberlin the most musical countertenor during post WW2 era in NYC. It has become my most personal music by the magnificent Monteverdi. This performance captures the ecstatic quality of the music-- bravo --I am 83 and come back to this piece to allay the despair in the present world.
Herman Joseph Russell Oberlin and Charles Bressler--great recording! One of our directors studied with Oberlin at Hunter College.
The Greenberg recording (the one with the New York Pro Music Antiqua) was my first exposure to Monteverdi, and the selections on that album are still among my favorite Monteverdi pieces. Greenberg's tempi seem to be different from many more recent recordings. For example, he takes this one much slower than any other recording I've heard on UA-cam, and definitely much slow than this performance. I still like Greenberg's tempo best -- but maybe I'm wrong. I wonder how much is authoritatively known about that? And his tempo for the madrigal Si ch'io vorrei morire is much faster than many recent recordings ... and is *definitely* the better tempo!
I grew up with that recording, but for me it's a bit on the slow side, even with the beautiful singing. But the nice thing about this music is that it works at different tempos and affects. After you play the ciaccona a zillion times you want it to really dance.
They have the best performance of zefiro torna that I have ever seen
Thank you--oldie but goodie!
In that case search out Nadia Boulanger with young Hughes Cuenod. That is for the gods.
I first performed this wonderful work 57 years ago at Cass Tech HS in Detroit, MI. Then and as performed in this video, it was sung by tenors. Its beauty remains. Thanks for posting.
Tenors!
I take an Acellus High School Music Appreciation class, and they showcased this gem. I can't get it out of my head. It's so catchy, it's embarrassing.
Wonderful to hear this on tenor voices.
Indeed!
I love this!!!! Amazing!!!
thank you voices of music
I had the Greenberg recording but over the years misplaced it. Has it been reissued on CD--somebody should reissue all of the great Pro Musica recordings with Greenberg conducting and singers such as Oberlin--They really have not in my mind been replaced Greenberg had commissioned modern replicas of the old instruments They gave marvelous concerts at the 92nd street Y with the greatest baroque singers of the day. At Yale there was also a great singer who snag Baroque and modern--Helen Boatwright--Then there was Adele Addison and Florence Kopleff--A golden age
Herman Joseph zefiro torna - russell oberlin and charles bressler
I had that LP as a child and listened to it over and over. It also featured the madrigal Io mi son giovinetta.
I love this performance. Everything about it is wonderful. I use it in the classroom and the students are captured by the joy and bravura you all. Thank you!
Hi friends, I stumbled on this as part of a playlist with Ave Maris Stella, both the Monteverdi and chant, to show my chorus of elders how it might flow. What a delight! I would imagine you are part of many wonderful playlists in addition to your own. I wish you all well and thanks for bringing this joyful piece into my evening...
Grandi Maestri. Bravissimi.
Brilliant interplay between two masters of there art
@Lydia637 Only one take from the concert--the lighting is difficult in the church, the color balance and brightness are quite different from left to right. Some of our later videos we use a white card to set the WB, but it is still different--also the cams are 50-75 feet away. Still, it is a nice place to perform--not dark and good sound!
Very nicely done! I discovered this beautiful piece from watching the movie Liberal Arts.
@galestorm3 The continuo was improvised...there is no score for it....
this song sends chills up my spine every time i hear it... monteverdi was a genius, and these people did him justice!!!! bravo!
The continuo really reminds of a ciaconna by kapsberger
Does anyone else hear this piece completely incorrectly in terms of meter? I cannot for the life of me hear “Zef-“ as anything but a downbeat.
It's a rolling ciaccona, not a squarish one. The phrases have arcs by choice, so that the first arc is to "torna." Metrically, the first syllable of Zefiro has the accent. The affect of the time, according to Monteverdi, was the enhance the text.
Another way to look at it: a ground like Pachelbel's canon is constructed in a very different way, whereas this work is more similar to Bertali's ciaccona.
Bravi!! Molto energetico :)

Aunque un poco lento. Ma...
Bellísimo
One of my 3 favorite songs .
Absolutely beautiful!
Extraordinaire !
@Elliot Gribble, the present continuo is based on a chaconne, a popular music form derived from a lively dance; it eventually turned into a moderate tempo of 3/4, which consisted of a few variations on a given bass line. There are many compositions which present a chaconne continuo, so the similarity between the ciaccona you mentioned and this particular bass line is easily explained.
Por fin , 100 versiones y finalmente una que me piace
Wonderful performance. The who ensemble works so well tegether. especially during those difficult tempo changes. I've always loved this piece. Bravo ! E.Harrison Gordon,Nubian Conservatory, Brooklyn,N.Y.
I keep coming back to this performance. It has the right feeling of ecstasy and is not rushed the singers are very expressive and the tempo changes are natural - the small instrumental ensemble is perfect, Where can
I get this DVD ?
maar ik mis jullie
Wonderful!! What a beautiful blend, and you sing it with a grace that I think Monteverdi himself would have loved. Bravissimi.
best
magnificent treatment of this very difficult and extraordinarily beautiful piece by Monteverdi!
Maravilloso, bello duo❤
Thank you!
Muchas gracias, es una delicia. DIOS les bendiga.
How delightul to watch these blessed singers to be amusing when they sing this piece!
Very Beautiful, thanks!
Que estilo. Bravo. Saludos
@Walvis2007 It's so clearly an ostinato! Perehaps a chaconne...
gorgeous basso ostinato!! *.*
A thoroughly enjoyable jolly, but for the spirit of this wonderful piece, truthful to music and poetry, I go back to Boulanger, Cuenod and Derenne. They illuminate Monteverdi's supreme art in a way never equalled.
+arcadia corydon Thank you, VM, for your reply. I take your point about the tempo of a chaconne, and Mademoiselle's speed was on the stately side. Of course they were breaking new ground in those remarkable performances. Huguie recorded the piece several times, keeping the tempo much the same. A joy of your performance is that you establish that first beat clearly, and maintain the important emphasis throughout, something which I don't find in the Boulanger until I look at the score! I love your work on UA-cam. O si sic omnes.
JUST~~" WOW"..!! Thank you for this posting.!!
i love steffani , carissimi,cavali , and monteverdi
Voices of Music, the best of the best! Happy Sunday : ) and thank you for the music!
Our pleasure!
what a wonderful performance!!!!!!!!!!!!
wonderful!
simply beautiful you guys. Just pure magic. Where did you take the music from or is it all improvised over the given ground base?
We played from Monteverdi's original print, but there are many versions on IMSLP. The performers added their own improvisations but a lot of the coloratura is by Monteverdi. imslp.org/wiki/Zefiro_torna_e_di_soavi_accenti,_SV_251_(Monteverdi,_Claudio)
