- Poema in versi di Ottavio Rinuccini:
Zefiro torna e di soavi accenti
l'aer fa grato e'il pié discioglie a l'onde
e, mormoranda tra le verdi fronde,
fa danzar al bel suon su'l prato i fiori.
Inghirlandato il crin Fillide e Clori
note temprando lor care e gioconde;
come vuol mia ventura, hor piango hor canto.
I could listen to Monteverdi all day.
I often do! ❤

Al the trouble in de real world tends to depress me. This truly wonderful performace makes all trials and tribulations fade into insignificant nonsense.
Thanks Philippe Jaroussky and Núria Rail, thanks Christina Pluhar and the Arpeggiata ensemble, for this beauty!
i had a beloved bolognese dog named Rocco and we loved this song. i picked it as his song because my dog loved nothing more than sitting in the grass on a warm spring day and squinting at the sun and feeling the breeze in his ears. we spent so many days together in my garden enjoying the fresh air and getting our ankles wet in the morning dew while waiting for sun to rise. he was a beautiful white dog and i called him my cloud.
three days ago my precious dog was struck and killed by a distracted driver in a horrific accident. when it was all over i came home from the vet and stopped to pick up some of the things i had left outside in my rush to get him to the pet hospital, and the sky opened up and it started pouring heavy sheets of rain. but the day after was a beautiful temperate summer day and i know my cloud sent me a gorgeous day to live in to make the first day without him a little bit easier. so i laid down and listened to this song and thought about all the impossibly soft, simple, but luxurious days we spent together in his almost 12 years of life. he would have been 12 on june 22. i will always think of my sweet cloud when i hear this joyful song.
Do not forget: he is with you lifelong...............
I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this performance. This is paradise on Earth. I love L'arpeggiata, Ms Nurial Rial, and Mr Philippe Jaroussky. I only wish I lived in France to hear them in person. Many blessings!!!
+Gregory Potter They are performing in London this December at The Wigmore. I cannot get there to see such a magical performance :(
+marko peelo, I now live in Idaho Falls, ID USA. I just moved here from Portland, OR where I was the Cantor and Bass Soloist for Trinity Cathedral for 34 years. There is no outlet for my talent here in Idaho. I make do by listening to others perform early music which my training was in. Thank goodness for UA-cam. Unfortunately, even London is beyond my reach at this time. Thank you for responding to my comment. I shall listen to some of your favorites. It is a goal of mine to travel to Europe and hear some of my favorite artists perform! ^_^
Hello again, have you any recordings of yours? I have just checked my playlists and realised they was all private. Not really been using youtube to save anything until recently. Now I know why I couldn't see things when on the ipad. I went into a small independent music shop in the UK and Christina Pluhar was playing. Bought the album there and then. It was amazing. since bought others and thoroughly watch the videos here. Brilliant music.
Yes, I agree. This is paradise:)
Ditto😊💙
That smile of the woman playing the lute in the end is how Monteverdi must have smiled had he heard this wonderful rendition.
Wonderful every single one! Thank you Christina for your ensemble, European music and culture at its very best
They answers one of the musical instruments questions . What is the man next to the Violinist playing? This is just heavenly. I love Monteverdi, specially the Vespers.
Christina Pluhar is the woman playing the lute and she is the leader of L'arpeggiata (instrumental group). Wonderful indeed!
@@racheldemain1940 some good ol' wikipedia wisdom here: that man is playing an Cornett (a curved cornett to be precise)
@@racheldemain1940 . david doron sherwin playing a 'cornetto'. Bruce dickey's best cornetto player. Enjoy your baroque music. regards.
I can't stop listening to this, over and over and over. This song and this performance in particular is just like a warm spring breeze, and all that comes with it. It is so full of warmth and life and happiness. This performance may be my favorite musical discovery of the year.
Indeed! That's the purpose of this piece. They are singing about spring:)
Me to
Same dawg. This shit is incredibly. Fuck modernity and all this bs.
Me too! Awesome.
Sublime.. Just discovered this.
It's addictive.
I had a former student who wrote an entire doctoral theory dissertation on the *rhythm* of this madrigal. I thought that was totally insane until I saw the score and realized that driving bass line is not notated as you hear it. What we hear as the offbeat--the third beat in a three-beat meter--is written as the downbeat. So there's a complex interaction between the perceived pulse and the written one. So her dissertation was not as crazy as I thought, though still pretty nuts. And BTW, I listen to this performance all the time. I've loved this madrigal for years, and this one is something quite special.
this sounds so cool, is the dissertation available to read anywhere?
@@babbychat You can check at the Yale Department of Music, if they have a list of dissertations. Note that the Department is different than the School of Music.
@@yumapoint thanks for the explanation; for me the vocal harmonics are exquisite
If I could give a grade to every performance of every piece I've ever heard in my life, this would be the highest. It is perfect. I wish I could personally thank the performers.
I only wish I'd discovered this when it was published - I'd be 10 years happier!
You would also be nearly 400 years older ! It was first published in 1632 in Scherzi musicali !
Baroque it is and very beautiful vocal harmonies
Magnifique !
Wow. Both singers are fabulous, but what an impeccable countertenor. Perfect blend.
Grazie Maestro Monteverdi!
Oh my, this brings back memories. I taught this to a children's choir I directed a very long time ago. We didn't have instrumental accompaniment expect a lone cello playing the continuo bass line, and we went a little slower. But OMG the kids ages 8-12 learned all that. It was thrilling to perform it.
This music is so beautifully uplifting and joyful.
When the bass drops at 2:09 😂
In all seriousness, what a jovial and fun piece; so evocative of the auspicious arrival of the Zephyr.
Rinuccini's words are as pure as the composition of Monteverdi. This always brings me to tears
It is so joyful. The glorious coming of spring. It brings tears to my eyes. A wonderful performance
Sono totalemnte innamorata di questo duo! Jaroussky é proprio straordinario!
bravissimi!
Sublime!!! Maravilloso duo ❤
Incredible piece of music. Like many others I can't stop listening to this. This is my favorite version. Interestingly it has a very "modern" feel to it. Just wow.....
C'esr merveilleux de savoir que notre patrimoine culturel n'est pas perdu et que la releve exite.❤❤❤❤ in english: our culture is still alive via this talented youth
These two together. Perfection. And all the members of L'arpeggiata--chef's kiss.
Wow!! What an incredible performance. I've heard many, and the joy, passion, drive and precision in this performance is just beautiful! Thank you!
must have been rock'n'roll at its times. Glorious voices.
Great voices , great music, it's like you lived this era
this is monstrously good
Una meraviglia!! Grazie di cuore!!
I am moved to tears. This is the most amazing piece of music on Earth . I am saying that as a fan of many styles and genres and as an uploader of a different version of this song, that has just found out that it is not sung by two women, which shocked him profoundly :)
Shimmering chords they are so pitch perfect
Me too❤❤❤❤
Overwhelming. Catalan soprano Nuria Rial shows always happy. She seems to sing more for herself than for others. Perhaps that's why she doesn't need the vibratos that other interpreters abuse of.
Baltadar Caubet - yes she certainly seems to enjoy performing and that adds to the pleasure we get when listening/watching. I am not familiar with much early Baroque vocal music but I would imagine that it doesn't want too much (if any) vibrato: a clean sound is what we get here and it suits the music perfectly.
Vibrato was considered an ornament at this time, not a default state.
@@taylordiclemente5163
Of course.
Notice that I do not criticize vibrato, but the abuse of it.
Although I must admit that I very seldom find it necessary.
I have watched this piece over and over again, and again and over and over and again and again. STUNNING
Consummate music making . Superb.
I am no expert - just a music lover - this is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever heard - both vocalists are sublime - the accompanists equally so - it is so uplifting and exquisite - the performers are so joyful and integrated in the piece.
This piece is full of pure joy!
This piece makes me so happy! Fabulous!
My friends laugh at me for listening to this type of music but I love it!
Your friends are stupid peasants mine are too haha
Get better friends.
The only thing that can be said of your friends is that they actually subsidise this and other genres of music by purchasing the over 'manufactured, monotonous drivel whose aim seems to be to be as offensive as possible. So thank them and have a chuckle whenever they laugh.
Sheer brilliance, as always, from both singers and ensemble - love Jaroussky, Rial and L'Arpeggiata, talk about a dream team!! I've always loved this duet but this is the best performance of it I have heard; it is so *alive* it makes me want to dance from the very first note! And the prelude from the orchestra is genius!!
Inés de Erausquin Your description is quite accurate. Jaroussky and Rial are a marvelous duo and complement each other so well.
The harmonic daring of Monteverdi, on the lines: "Sol io, per selve abbandonate e sole,
come vuol mia ventura, hor piango hor canto." Just amazing!
One of the 'Great' moments in all music.
Bravissimo
Je suis d'accord!!! Bravooo!!
What human mankind can produce the best on earth. Gives hope.
I had the pleasance to listen them live.. it´s really marvelous...you can´t believe they are even better than in this video
I can actually. That must be amazing to hear them live . Lucky you. 🙂
Sublime interpretación, el Paraíso en la tierra.
Maravilhosa interpretação...
Stupenda musica, stupenda interpretazione, stupenda esecuzione, stupendi cantanti 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
Am I strolling through the Italian Renaissance Garden in a Villa of a Cardinal in the early 17th Century?! This performance is beyond sublime! Cannot thank you enough or sharing.
This is a Grade A certified bop.
Claudio hits it out of the ballpark again. (With a little help from his very good friends.) A reminder that people 400 years ago knew how to have a good time, too. A thousand thanks.
L'Arpeggiata and Zéfiro, the perfect junction. Transparent, airy, the most integrated sound I've ever heard. Great tribute to the composer Monteverdi, the Zéfiro himself, and the listeners.
Congratulatios from Brasil.
Una musica che stimola emozioni, ciao🌹👋
I love so much this performance! Great singers, great musicians!
Sublim, beautiful.a journey to the medieval era
Não me canso de admirá_lo!!
Oh what divine music
Quels talents!
Observe @ 3:49 how both Rial and Jaroussky's head both rises in the same way with the rising 5-note note line....thats how you know musicians are connected on an artistic and spiritual level. Bravissimo.
Beautiful and Fantastic!!! :-)
Thank You :-)
SPLENDIDI!!!!BRAVISSIMI TUTTI!!!!
Beautiful voices. Amazing musicians. It’s just heavenly
¡Maravilloso!
My heart is full! Beautiful! :)
The text painting is so wonderful you should read the translation.
ENGLISH VERSION:
Return O Zephyr, and with gentle motion
Make pleasant the air and scatter the grasses in waves
And murmuring among the green branches
Make the flowers in the field dance to your sweet sound;
Crown with a garland the heads of Phylla and Chloris
With notes tempered by love and joy,
From mountains and valleys high and deep
And sonorous caves that echo in harmony.
The dawn rises eagerly into the heavens and the sun
Scatters rays of gold, and of the purest silver,
Like embroidery on the cerulean mantle of Thetis.
But I, in abandoned forests, am alone.
The ardour of two beautiful eyes is my torment;
As my Fate wills it, now I weep, now I sing.
jegraham440, where did you find this translation/who did it? Many thanks!
thank you for this translation
this is not the best translation. more valuable is one from dutch wiki, even tranlated via tranlator
thank you for this!
Yeah perhaps not the best, but my Italian isn't good enough to translate the whole thing. I used to teach this piece to my undergraduate music class, and I found that you can follow the text painting pretty well if you understand a key words in each phrase.
Have loved this work for years and years and this performance is among the very best. Many congratulations.
i LOVE this piece...makes my heart wide as the sky...I always listen to it this time of year, when autumn is near
Simply sublime...
One of the most beautiful performances I came through of this :) :) :)

if you can find the version with Nigel Rogers------------it is faster and more compellingly danceable
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!!!!!
What a wonderful lightness, sun, charm, colors Ahhhhhhh :)
Wow! Makes me want to get up and dance using some of the movements of middle eastern & of midieval dance
What an amazing glance into middle centuries this music gives! How amazing this group and their high spirited interpretation is!
Nurial Rial is lovely.
Amazing! Bringing music to life with the discipline needed to be able to do it well with a deliciously free spiritedness shown here is what it's about. How did we ever allow something so organic to become so sanitized and generic?
Best version yet! And Nuria is a total babe!
Bellissima interpretazione: bravissimi i cantanti e gli strumentisti
Plainly speaking.......simply splendid, thank you for making my day
Che bravi! Ogni volta mi emozionano. Complimenti 🎶❤️🎵
Affascinante!
Merci d'avoir écrit le texte . Sublime interprétation !
Thank you for sharing this exquisite post.
Really Bravo! Philippe Jaroussky and Nurial Rial are wonderful!!
This is a master piece. A very good tasty. I am astonished!!!!!!
Amazing, Delightful and Outstanding!!! :-)
Thank You :-)
This is wonderful - gorgeous joyous hypnotic music.
Simplesmente maravilhoso.
Lovely. One of my favorites. Hadn't heard it in a long time. Wonderful performance.
Truly beautiful music and performance.
Qué hermoso, magnifico! Monteverdi fue una joyita.
Manybthanks for this great performance❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wonderful performance by the accompanying band of musicians, too -- on period instruments too . . . Lovely!
Great Jaroussky singing in "Falsetto". Great also Nuria Rial and all the ensemble.
Jaroussky may be the greatest proof that falsetto is a misnomer. Nothing false about this. Makes me wonder why we don't simply call it head voice the way we do with women
incredibile! Molto amo la musica di Monteverdi! E' un compositore grande! Una bella redazione!
