  • A quick and simple way to add some 'medieval' to your buckles.
The truth is there are so many different types of buckles that have been found all through the medieval period that it is difficult to say exactly what is 'medieval' in a buckle. However a few simple things can make a modern buckle look slightly more medieval.
As mentioned in the video though, pick your fights and choose a appropriate buckle for the piece you are making.

Absolutely, with a nice bronze escutcheon plate as well, it can add a touch of class.

Probably never will get the chance to *really* be an armourer, but it's a hobby I truly enjoy. I try to spend as much time on it as I can (which sadly hasn't been a lot for the past year or so), but I hope to be spending a whole lot more time in the workshop in about half a year.
Just wanted to thank you for your videos! Your channel is fairly niche, but it's by far the best learning material for armouring I've ever seen.

Thanks mate, means a lot. However much you manage to do, enjoy the process and best of luck :)

Love it. And perhaps doing the sanding and polishing with 10 or 15+ buckles then the time can go down to 2 min per buckle.

Graham, this is an interesting video and I learned a lot from it. Also, you mentioned "armour reports" on the Wisby(?) finds. Can you correct my spelling ("Wisby"?) and point me/us to a copy of the report(s), either digital or in print?
Are you by chance referring to Bengt Thordeman's "Armour from the Battle of Wisby 1361," Volumes I & II, dated 1939? If this is it, I found PDFs of both volumes on Scribd. I need to look through them carefully and I suspect that I'll learn a lot from them! I prefer printed books over PDFs, but I can't afford the "new" printed version (from online sellers) that combines both versions (~$180US). :(

when we went for cheap as possible we always made buckles from 16 penny nails. Hammer the nail square-ish... bend to shape... oil quench for a little rust prevention... Replace frequently when they rust up.

@@GreenleafWorkshop I started fighting when the number of armorers were less than the fingers on one hand. So you made your own stuff or you didn't fight.
