  • Sadly there's no simple way or even single way, to really deep clean your armour. You simply have to get on with it.
In this short video I take a look at what I would suggest is the simplest way to give your armour a really good deep clean, without running the risk of ruining it.
Be warned though, this method will wreck mirrored finishes, instead it will give a matt or satin finish to the armour. This is not a technique for spot rust removal.
If you don't have a bench grinder some 150 grit sand paper will do the trick just as well, you will just have to go at it a little longer than you do with a bench grinder.
The product I use on the linen mop is called scovax: www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/in...
Although there are plenty of other pastes out there that work just as well.

Your channel is invaluable in my quest to make my first suit of armor. You are a great instructor.

Did you succeed? I don't think I can make my own but I want to try. Currently, i'm just sticking to splint mail and brigandines.

I have a tip for large-scale rust removal. I had an horrible accident where a lot of armor got temporally stored in a corner of an attic, and then Filomena storm came and the armor had to remain in an humid place for a month. Found myself needing to remove a couple square meters worth of rust in a hurry, before it turned into pitting. In a place with no electricity for steel wiring it out. Found a great help with phosphoric acid, sold as rust remover at the 1 euro bazaar. Was a lifesaver. Ate most of the red (active) rust and turned the rest into an actual protective coating that just needed light sanding to remove. Decided to leave that coating as it was on the inside to cut my sanding time in half, too.
Other acids like HCl will remove the rust faster, but then will cause further oxidation if not neutralised inmediately. Phosphoric acid doesn't have that problem.
Certainly *NOT* my go-to rust removal method, but good for when disaster strikes and your almor already is far past worries about "keeping the finishing"...

Just want to let you know. I subscribe to hundreds of channels, like many do. You are however the only channel I have all of my alerts on for. Keep up the amazing work! I became an amateur armourer for some local SCA and ACL guy thanks to your vids.

I just ordered a King Arthur Armor from BBC Merlin for a cosplay, but it came all oily and has some black smudgy areas that leave residue. Is there an easy/ simple way to wash off the access so it's not rubbing off on everything and staining it? Or is it the grime you mentioned in the beginning? I've never had metal before so I'm new to cleaning it

Helpful video! I was wondering if you have a preferred method for removing rivets. I've be using a angle grinder with mixed results.

I've found this useful: hit the rivet in the middle with a center punch. Then you have a steady hole to place your drill on. Then just carefully drill in the middle and you can easily remove the rivet with pliers. It's fast method and won't damage the rest of the armor. You can drill all the way through but usually it's enough that you "destroy" the rivet head and use pliers.

My go to product is my powerfile and a centre punch to push it through once the rivet is flush with the metal surface.
